I've bought a S2 & ma cousin used it a week ...In between , he rooted it & installed Criskelo ROM in it , When i got it back i found that its 'WIFI' frequently Drops off! I tried changing many roms myself , but no change! it keeps on dropping off!
As the phone is under warranty , i would like to give it for repair , But i think i need to UNROOT it first or the warranty would get void...
So someone please suggest me the right method to UNROOT it & the official firmware along with it as i cannot find any backup
So please consider my request & help me !
Thanks

You don't need to unroot it - rooting does not void the warranty. Putting a custom ROM on it, however, does. You need to flash back a stock ROM. Both branded and unbranded versions can be found in the xda bookmarks page in my signature. The threads also have very clear instructions on how to flash them.
The wifi issue may well be solved by flashing a stock ROM, so don't send it back till you've tried that and checked it again.
Good luck
If you want, I can provide you a stock recovery package, which will put the phone on the complete stock
The package is GB 2.3.4 based on XXKH3 and multi-CSC OXAKH3. It includes a .PIT file, CODE.tar, PHONE .tar, MODEM .tar. But if you do return the phone, you'll need to change the CSC which is set to default to KOR. You'll want to change to XEU.

I was sure that the letter sent out by Samsung mentioned rooting as voiding warranty .Speifically instructed techs to look for apps that required root .

I didn't know that (obviously, from my comment), but I don't see how they can justify it since you're not doing anything to the phone other than "installing" something on it. I guess they could argue that rooting allows you to perform commands that you otherwise couldn't perform, and they could damage the phone, but than a factory reset would cure it.
Not sure they could get away with that if pressed, but who knows. It's still worth the "unroot" if that's what they say.
Might they also look at the custom kernel count? In which case you will need a usb jigg.
Thanks everyone...lemme install a stock rom & try giving it at service center

I have some questions about my Galaxy S II I bought a few weeks back, regarding returning the device to a pre-modified state?
After a few hours of browsing, (and, unfortunately, not being able to answer this question on my own), I've found that, should I root my device (and then do anything after, like installing a custom ROM), that my warranty is voided, and this being a $900 phone, that's something that troubles me (especially when I'm also paying another $15p/month to my carrier for additional cover ).
So, my main question is, is there a way that I can restore my phone to it's current state (carrier-installed apps, stock Samsung apps, no modifications whatsoever), so that it would be able to be returned under warranty (assuming that I go ahead and root it)? I've read that there is a counter for every ROM that is flashed (or modification made?), so I'd need to be able to return that back to it's original state as well, I assume.
I live in Australia, and my carrier is Optus.
The only thread that I've found that is of any use to me really, is this one:
[HOWTO] reset custom binary counter in download mode
Though I am slightly confused by the process
I've seen so many amazing mods, like the camera mod from here: [MOD] Hacked Camera.APK for better audio quality, usage with any battery life & MORE!
The audio mod: [GUIDE]DSP Manager + CM Music Player on SGSII = Awesome!
etc. and not to mention the overclocking potential of the GSII, I'm finding it hard to resist rooting this phone.
If someone could help me, I'd be eternally grateful. I've searched through the forums thoroughly, and returned nothing of substantial use, but I apologise if I've posted a previously-answered question
Stock Rom thread in Dev section or Branded rom thread dev section reflash original firmware removes root .
The only thread that I've found that is of any use to me really, is this one:

process is turn phone off>> Plug USB jig in to USB port >> phone boots done .

Oh wow, I feel like such an idiot for missing that...
For clarification, you were referring to this thread, yes?
[ROMS]Official i9100 carrier branded firmware download for Odin Flash
And after reading the requirements to reset the binary counter (which, as far as I can tell, is essential if I want to return the device), I don't think I'll be going ahead with rooting the device. Making the jig is out of the question for me, and I have no idea how to properly use it.
Either way, thanks for your help
You can buy the jig on ebay for something like £4, no need to make one yourself. As for using it, it's as JJ said: phone off, jig in... done. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find video instructions on you tube if you wanted to see it in action

Thanks, Isadora.
So, am I correct in saying:
If I was to root the device, but then need to return it under warranty, all I'd need to do is flash it back to the stock ROM, and then use the jig to reset the binary counter, and it'd be able to be returned under warranty (in theory, at least)?
Sorry for the repetitive questions

Yes mate - exactly that
I've red on another section of the forum that Samsung put a second hidden counter that cannot be reset... this could void the warranty anyway.
Can anyone confirm ?
NO.
Its a rumour until a second counter if it exists is found .

This is some BS, I've been searching for a second counter and cannot find anything to even suggest that one exists.
edit: Just to clarify I mean the rumour is BS.
My phone is F&^%ed.
Its completely missing the efs folder. Its empty. (Yes its been rooted and files unhidden). There is nothing there.
I was to return it to warranty state and send it back to samsung.
How can I do this so the warranty isn't void?
Are there any particular files I need to remove? Won't there be logs and they can see what's been going on with the phone?
I've got copies if the stock rom and supposedly the stock kernal.
When I do *#1234# I get
PDA: 19100TDUFK4
PHONE: unknown
CSC: Unknown
Build info Weds June 29 17:28:38 KST 2011
Info phone info the kernal version is 2.6.35.7 19100ZSKF4-CL280225 [email protected]#22
I'm sure the Kernal used to say DELL.
Anyone know where to go next?
Get firmware for your country/carrier here, if you can't find it/if link is dead/if it isn't listed, do a search on here for Checkfus & you'll be able to download the latest firmware for your phone/carrier/country that you'd normally get via Kies.
Flash firmware in Odin, do a factory reset/make sure there are no apps left on the phone that could tip off whomever fixes it that you've been messing with it, jig it to reset the flash counter (if the jig doesn't work, flash the old bootloader from here in the PDA or Bootloader section of Odin, then the jig should work).
Getting warranty service after you've run non-stock firmware on the phone is never 100% certain after you've voided the warranty by doing same. But if you do the above, you will probably (not definitely) get warranty service.
If you're after 100% chance of warranty service, don't mess with your phone in the first place.
Done.
Return to your telco/Samsung.
Thanks!
The only reason I ever rooted the phone is because they refused to fix it under warranty due to a cracked screen.
After unlocking my phone with the code that 3 gave me, it stopped working. (No imei)
I send it back to be fixed and as there was a minor crack in the screen they wanted that fixed first.
So I did some research and realised what the problem was.
Apparently its common for a phone unlock to damage the efs.
And that's when I discovered rooting Never heard of it before. So it was not me mucking around with the phone that damaged the efs folder.
It took me a few weeks to realise that I'm never getting this fixed by myself so I've contacted the TIO about getting it fixed under warranty. From what I understand even Samsung cant repair a damaged efs. So they would probably just replace the phone.
I think its unfair that they want to charge me $250 for a screen that they have no intention of repairing, that I don't even want repaired, and is completely unrelated to the real problem.
I have a question. I've done a factory reset but 2 apps are still there. Superuser and clockwork, why weren't they deleted?

Hello,
I'm going to send my Galaxy S2 in for repairs but I need to un-root it first.
I'm searching for the official Vodafone Australia kernel DUKJ1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
The kernel is there but because multiupload is down I cannot download it. I have tried Check Fus downloader but it does not have DUKJ1. Is there any other way I can get the kernel?
Also do I even need to un-root it as I have used the usb jig to reset the binary counter?
Um, actually, Checkfus does have KJ1 for Voda AU. This is the most recent firmware available for Voda AU via Kies (I just checked this with my own copy of Checkfus).
Download the entire rom and extract the kernel zImage.
If you leave a rooted kernel on it & whomever repairs the phone notices this, there's a fair chance your warranty will be deemed to have been voided. Frankly, you might as well flash the entire KJ1 rom package from Checkfus (for all whomever repairs it knows, you probably updated OTA via Kies), then do a factory reset then double check to make sure there's no trace of any apps that required root left on the phone.
Then jig it again just to be doubly sure.
Then done. Send it in for warranty service.

What version of Checkfus do you have as I can't find it. I select Android then GT-1900T but KJ1 is nowhere to be seen?
Thanks.
2.1. Android/I9100T/Australia (Vodafone). Tells you original firmware was KF2, then hit check firmware. Tells you KJ1 is latest released on 8/11/2011.
Are you sure you're using the PC version & not the phone app ?

No worries
Unless you have a specific reason for flashing the new bootloader (I.E. something not working without it), leave it. The less you mess around with bootloaders the better.

The reasons I planned on sending the phone in for repair/replacement were that is would turn on and off by itself sometimes, would open voice talk by itself almost constantly and would make the charging 'beep' noise when not plugged in.
Since unrooting none of these problems have happened again, should I still send it in for repair/replacement? Why would unrooting fix these problems?
Hard to say. Was the phone just rooted, or were you running a custom rom ? If the latter it may have been something in the rom causing the issues.
Up to you. Maybe run it for a week or two (or whatever) & see how it goes. You've unrooted it, you can jig it if you haven't already & send it in for warranty service whenever you like.
Obviously jigging it & going back to stock is never a guarantee of warranty service (given you've voided the warranty by rooting it in the first place), but most people who have done this have been fine so far as warranty service is concerned. I have seen a few exceptions over the past few months on here, but it's hard to say whether those people followed all the steps before sending it in or not.
That would be a good idea!

No idea. That's entirely up to them. But unlikely to replace outside the first few weeks unless the phone was unfixable if previous experiences on here are anything to go by.

Any proper guide to be done before send to repair?.. i've just sent my phone to service today. Battery temperature warning problem. Re-flash stock rom with stock kernel. Everything goes back like factory settings
Just the usual steps I.E. flash stock firmware, do a wipe/factory reset, use jig to reset the flash counter, double check that the reset worked & there are no traces of old apps on the phone which required root that could tip off whomever fixes the phone that you'd rooted it. Some say you should first (while the phone is still rooted) go into CWRecovery and format cache, data, system, & sd card. Then flash stock firmware and then use the jig. Depends on how paranoid you are I guess.
As I said to the previous poster, there are no guarantees of warranty service after you root or flash non-stock firmware on your phone (you shouldn't expect same), however if you follow these steps you should get warranty service. But there are always exceptions.

Hello fellow XDA user
I have recently bought a the I9100 internation version and I am really pleased, however I do know the power of a ROM and how much it could improve or brick your phone.
However I came from the Galaxy S i9000, I never managed to recover the phone, so it would be recognized by kies, it did recognize my phone, but it said that 'Kies didn't support any upgrades for it'. Meaning if I would like to return it for garantee reasons, the shop or manufacturer will see I have been messing with my phone, which excludes my warranty.
Therefore I wonderd if there was a possibility to install roms or root your phone and unroot it, so kies would regonize it again.
Thanks alot and feel free to suggest any rom

yes there is a way cfroot to which will give you superuser access and also CWM recovery by then swapping back to stock kernel will unroot also if you using odin to flash this wil increase binary counter look for a app called triangle away this will reset the binary counter but only works on ics.
this is just basics to answer quickly your question please still search within the sgs2 forum sections most of all new users questions have been answered and there is many guides for new users to refer to in development sections prior to installing customs roms etc

1) Prepare Odin --> Go download Mode (Power + volume down + home button)
2) Flash Phone --> Odin --> Install CF Root Kernel
3) Mount Phone ---> USB --> Download Rom ---> Boot ClockWorkRecovery (Power + volume up + home button)
4) Enjoy Rom --> Enjoy Xda Power
5) How to Revert?, will kies regonize it and support it

Can someone please answer my post above, I really want to start modding, but I also want to be able to get back to an unrooted version with Kies support
Check out the links in my signature, especially the one about going back to stock. That should satisfy your request.
Long story short, reset your flash counter and flash stock rom. But make sure you READ
OK. The experience on here over the past 6 mths or so goes something like this. About 50% of people who go back to stock firmware for their region after using custom roms or stock firmware not for their region seem to be able to get OTA updates via Kies OK. For some reason(s), the other 50% or so of these people seem not to be able to get OTA updates to work despite flashing a full stock rom for their region (with correct CSC).
Why doesn't it seem to work for some people ? Who knows ? I don't think I've seen a single answer that could cover even a small majority of those cases.
Regardless, if you find you ever go back to stock with the intention of getting OTA firmware updates & they don't work, do what plenty of people on here do & flash them via Odin. Easy fixed.
The bottom line with warranties is this. The moment you start rooting your phone or flashing non-stock firmware on it, you should forget about/lose all expectations of warranty service/replacement should something go wrong with your phone. At the end of the day, you mess with your phone, why should Samsung/your telco foot the bill ?
Having said that, if you format everything, go back to stock & reset the flash counter, again, the experience on here is many people seem to get warranty service OK.
What you seem to be looking for is a 100% iron-clad guarantee.
There isn't any. If potentially borking your phone & having to pay to have it repaired/replaced yourself frightens you, best advice would be simply don't mess with it. Stay on stock. That's the only way you're getting 100% guarantees. If you've only ever been on stock/OTA updates & never rooted/flashed custom firmware and the phone borks, they pay to fix it.
Pretty simple really.
Hi,
I've had a look around and can't find a thread that answers my question completely. I just want to gain root access to phone, I have no intention of flashing a custom firmware. My phone is a Galaxy S2 I9100 running Vodafone Australia's stock 4.0.3 ICS.
As I am new to rooting, I have browsed through this page but still have questions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I want to be able to easily restore my phone to its stock, unrooted state for warranty purposes. I'm not quite sure how to do this, Is there a way to backup my phones kernel as it is now, and be able to flash back to the stock kernel if something were to go wrong?
Also, My kernel version is 3.0.15-I9100TDULP9-CL422302 ..... The key letters being LP9? So then which one of these 2 would I flash?
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_KPN_LP9-v5.4-CWM5.zip OR
CF-Root-SGS2_DX_SIN_LP9-v5.4-CWM5.zip
Or would either work?
(Yes still going, sorry!) I also saw something called a Binary Flash Counter which counts the amount of times a phone has been modified? Would I be affected by this by just gaining root access? And if so how do I prevent that? (My ultimate aim is to root, but still keep warranty)
Thanks in advance for any help, its really appreciated.

To get back to stock look for your firmware in Intratech's thread. It also provides links for kernel only downloads.

From the thread you were referencing:
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.

Yes you will be affected (if rooting with CF-root method) and no, you can't prevent it. However you can reset things. The easiest way to do this is to use TriangleAway from the Play store.
Best thing to do if you want a backup that's as close to stock as possible is to root your phone & then do a Nandroid backup in CWM before doing anything else to the phone (flashing custom roms, other kernels, etc). That will give you a backup that is essentially stock other than the rooted kernel.
If you want to guarantee warranty service, don't mess with your phone (yes, I'm serious). Once you start messing with it, you should lose any expectation of warranty service should the worst happen (rooting your phone/running non stock firmware voids your warranty). Having said that, many people who have rooted their phones and/or run non-stock firmware have been able to get warranty service by going back to stock & resetting the flash counter either with a jig or Triangle Away before sending it in for service. However, this is never a guaranteed, rolled gold 100% certainty.
FXRB is right, before you root your phone, either download your current firmware from Intratech's thread, or use the PC version of Checkfus to download it. This will save you problems if you need to go back to stock in say, 12 mths, and you forget which firmware was originally on the phone.

In addition to what Jokesy said, you say you have a Sprint Samsung s2 ics 4.0.4 fh13. The Sprint variant is the Epic 4G Touch, and has a different forum located at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1281.
This forum is for the I9100, which is a GSM phone, and doesn't even work on Sprint's CDMA network.
