Skin to protect aluminum backplate? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

My prime will be carried around without a dock most of the time. I was thinking however, that although I will have it in a leather case, that there still might be a chance that the aluminum backplate will suffer from scuffs and scratches. Can anyone who already has received their Prime say how sensitive the aluminum backplate is to scratches?
I am contemplating a clear skin to put over the aluminum backplate (Skinomi or something else??) Do you guys think that it would be necessary if the prime is kept inside a leather case? If so, what are our options to consider?

I made a clear skin for mine just went to a sign shop and bought clear vinyl 10ft 5$
Apply with water and wait to dry. so much cheaper then the other brands. and it does not show finger prints at all.

it gives it some grip to for the back. very cheap very easy. It would work on the front as well but I do not want to put it on there.

Updated photo.. its getting better!

That's pretty cool. Did you go to the sign shop and ask for vinyl or does it have a specific name?

Clear vinyl thats all I asked for.. its more for putting over finished digital work.

i made a pad for the back too. mines made out of foam though.
i made a thread on it in the general section. didnt think to put it here.

Is that adhesive vinyl? If it regular vinyl, how did you get it to adhere? I've haven't been able to find anywhere in my town that carries the adhesive clear kind.

try your local sign or print shop. its the same type of stuff they make store window lettering and other stuff from. i didnt make that one, but im fairly sure that is made from the adhesive type. you could maybe make one with another color. just be careful because the adhesive is rated in years. so unless you want it to be permanent dont get adhesive vinyl rated at like 20 years. because it lasts 20 years...

this is 10 year Adhesive clear. but it is also 2.5mm think instead of 1mm thick

Well. I don't think it's the adhesive vinyl. From what MrGiggles has described, I think it's the Static Cling Vinyl. You apply by spraying the backing with water or water/detergent mix. I ordered "Grafix Static Cling Sign Vinyl" from DICKBLICK.COM. Sorry I can't post the link but you can google it.

Oops. Sorry didn't read this before I posted. Looks like I ordered something different. I thought yours was removable which what I needed. The vinyl I ordered is removable and reusable. It won't arrive until Jan 4. For $3.75, it's worth a try.

This looks great here...so cheap I can't refuse NOT to try it out.

yes just used a piece of paper that i cut to right shape and size and then matched it on the clear vinyl. ill take a pic of it now. it is perfect.
dust is what you see on the back.

LOVE this idea... now to find the vinyl

Mrgiggles, that's looking really sweet. Looks like all the air bubbles are gone as well. The Static Cling Vinyl finally arrived. I applied it yesterday and let it set overnight. You just saved me quite a bit of money. Thanks.

Perfect. I removed the FCC sticker. less of a bump

Carbon Skin

I'm new here and registered to show how good this thing looks (in my opinion) with a carbon skin. I did the same for my iPad before I sold it. I uploaded the pictures to my User account photo album so I assume I just link them now.

Looks good. Can share with others here where you got the skin from? And is it really carbon fiber or just the design?

I got the same thing from Skinomi and I like it. I only added the one back panel.
That does look nice.
HTC Flyer / Tapatalk
Nice! Had a similar one from PhantomSkinz when I had my Captivate. Love the carbon look.
I have the same skin. I'm afraid the corners may start to peel back... Not faulting Skinomi, since it would be a problem with any cut to fit skin.
Just trying to think of ways to prevent it. Maybe a bead of nail-polish or super glue on the edges to smooth and reduce from catching... also prevent particles from getting under the edges.
I used a heat shrink gun for the edges and it pretty much gave it a very clean, secure adhesion to the tablet. I would think a hair blow dryer would do the same.
Did the same with a heat gun while wrapped in packing stretch wrap... But still feel as though it may get caught... Oh well, they sent me two by mistake or it may be there policy.

Yes, you really have to use a heat gun or blow dryer for best results ...I used a blow dryer.
I really want to get this skin combo but I wish they would cut out a section around the htc lettering like they do for the ipad skins.
I might just get it and do the cutting myself but I would prefer not to.
OP, thanks for bringing this to my attention.
Yes. I would have liked to see the HTC logo cut-out also. Overall its a nice cut.
Just installed yesterday. The pics are a bit lousy because the lighting here at work is crap and I can't just leave right now. I thought it would be nice to see the htc logo but after installing it I think it looks good as is.
It has a great textured feel to it and it adds a bit of grip to the view. I didn't install the sides because they just didn't line up right; I had to cut the skin for the top bumper because it would have prevented me from removing the cover if I need to get to my micro sdcard.
The screen protector that came with it is nice and doesn't have that rubbery feel that zagg's have. It doesn't affect the display at all unless you install it and leave many microbubbles and streaks behind.
Overall I give it 3.5 out of 5. The reason I rated it like this is because the original design prevents access to the micro sdcard without having to destroy the skin. Another reason is that the cutouts don't line up that great on the view. The edges that stick to the curves of the view seem to have been cut short and leave a bit of a gap between the skin edge and the edge it is supposed to wrap around.
Other than that, it's still not a bad price (29.95 I think I paid) for a full body-skin and screen protector. A heat gun or blow-dryer is a must use item when installing this skin. It makes the skin soft enough to be able to stretch it just bit if you need it to which is what I did in some areas to get the edges to line up correctly.
Nice skin but I agree it's a pain to cut the skin to be able to remove the sd card cover. And the corners we difficult to stay in place without putting a lot of heat to it. 3 stars for me.

Really nice
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e
I agree about the cutting of the cover portion. A razor did it fairly easily. The back portion of the skin is great. The rest is just meh. I must say though, that this company does stand behind their product. I wrote them after my install about the cover portion that came off when I tried to change out my micro sd card. He shipped me a whole new skin, screen protector and all. It was in my mailbox two days later. This is very rare these days. For that I give it four stars. I had a problem with a full body suit from body guards and still have not received my exchang from them, and that was weeks ago. The screen protector on this setup is one of the clearest I've used but it is a little grippy and feels unresponsive at times. Although, the finger prints are way less than when I had nothing at all.
I just wanted to let everyone know that the Skinomi carbon fiber skin and the Armor Suit carbon skin are the exact same thing. I just received my Armor suit today and was surprised when it was the exact thing. So if you're shopping for one you can get the cheaper of the two. Service wise the shipping was about the same, but Skinomi was on the ball with a replacement that same day. My Armor skin was originally for my Sammy 10.1 and I exchanged it for the flyer which took a month and me calling a few times to get it. I will say that they were very nice people and very understanding.

Here is a cover I made from a black 2mm thick foam sheet from Micheal's craft store. The foam I used is called "Silly Winks Foam Sheets, 12x18, 2mm thick, $0.89." Basically, I just got the foam sheet, cut it down to 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches, and cut a slot out for the speaker and camera. I attached it with some wide double sided tape from 3M, making sure to edge the cover with tape very carefully so no corner comes loose.
I found the foam to be nice in the hand for non-slippiness, and it also takes care of that crunching sound that you can get if you set your tablet down on a hard surface that has some small grains of dirt or other stuff on it. I havent had to take one of these off yet, but the tape shouldnt do anything bad to the front cover, or its finish.
Enjoy.

Heh, that's pretty slick. Hmm think would work great with adhesive that comes on all the bump mail...comes off really easy (has a rubbery feel) but holds pretty dang well.
Looks good though.

yup, its the same stuff basically as the stuff they use on envelopes.
Interesting, going to swing by Michaels or Ben Franklin's tomorrow while I finish up Christmas shopping. I'm assuming 2mm is as thing as it gets?
Good job. Yes, I was thinking I might have to cover the amethyst gray.
Some said that it looked too purple. But, I don't think so. I actually like
the color. In some light almost looks gunmetal.
The only issue I see you having is since it's not exactly flush with the surface, I'm afraid that the foam can get caught on things. For example when you put it down or stuff it into a bag.

They might have some that are a bit thicker, but 2mm just seemed like the best thickness to me. They also have other colors i think, some pretty bright...
yeah, it can get caught in a bag if you dont put it in just right, but doing a good tape job takes care of most of that problem.

Not exactly. The adhesive used isn't remotely the same as, for example, a sticker. If it's the envelope stuff, it leaves absolutely no residue. Besides, he didn't say this is be all end all solution.

yeah, i love aluminum cases on electronics, but they are so smooth that they just dont give me a solid grip all the time. Also this helps to grip the surface of whatever i set it on, like the rounded arms of the couch. Really gives you that perfect couch commando angle.

Bumper gel skin case generic

I wasn't finding many bumper cases besides aluminum versions out there so I decided to try out a generic one I found on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170818419766&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:1123
It was $5.99 including shipping. They have a few other colors available. The description is for "Samsung Galaxy Note i9220, n7000", but it fits the i717 great.

The black rubber buttons over the volume and power buttons make everything easy to press.
I like how the black outlines the front of the Note. The case fits mostly snug although mine is a little loose at the top (giving a slight wave on the black as it runs along the top)
I wasn't sure about white on white, but I think it works.
I had a SGP Neo Hybrid EX on my GSII and loved it. This case is definitely not as good quality, but is good for the money and will do until I find just the right one.
Edit: After several weeks of use, my only complaint is the soft black rubber can come apart from the harder white plastic. A little super glue takes care of it. I use it in a car mount that squeezes on the sides so that probably makes the problem worse.
Looks pretty good, I'm definitely interested. Why is that top corner exposed though? Maybe put a zagg full body or something on it and you'd be pretty secure.
How tight is it? I have a GLAS.t glass screen protector and I wonder if it would still fit.

It is flexible and while snug not tight so I don't think another 0.4mm thickness would cause problems.
My SGP Neo Hybrid EX for the GSII (I bought the non-US version of the case because I didn't want to wait ) had the same open area on the corner. I believe some countries have an option for an external or retractable antenna that pops out there.

I didn't even know such a product existed. I found a few others on ebay. I'm thinking of getting a less bulky case. Right now I'm using the seidio active. I'm afraid of breaking anything because I dropped it the first week and cracked my screen ($200 replacement!) so I bought the glass screen protector for my new one. I think this would be the perfect level of protection and still keep it looking good and slim. I'm not as worried about the battery cover as you can just buy a new one for $13 off eBay.
Thanks for the review and the link. It's nice to see that this is a US seller with excellent feedback score.

I took my case on and off a few times over the weekend playing with uSD cards and another battery. I noticed one corner of the case looked funny (it came up over the screen more than it should). The black soft rubbery material had pulled away from the white harder material on that corner. A little super glue fixed it, but thought I would let others know. Still OK for a total of $5.99. If anyone finds a quality TPU/rubber type bumper case, please post a link.

Homemade backplate using genuine leather

So I also own a Note 3 and dig the leather back but don't dig that it is fake as hell. I picked up the ZU when it went on sale about a month or so ago and though I do like the glass material I felt I was worrying too much about it. I couldn't find a case that I liked that fit in the dock and just kept worrying about scratching the back up. So... I just bought some leather sample and some el cheapo screen protectors and went to work.
I quite like the result though cutting out the camera hole was the worst part. Another good thing is that this is easily removed and reused if so desired.

Thanks dude. Nah, I used some 3m double stick tape. It's the stuff I believe they use to put spoilers on cars. That leather isn't going anywhere. You can see how I laid it down in the second pic. I double stuck it onto an illumishield back screen protector so I can easily peel it off and put it back on at will with no loss of stickiness in case I want to switch back to my incipio case.

Thanks, it looks really great. I have to find out how to do it by myself without rear sample protector.
I would suggest just buying a cheap rear protector because it would serve as the template for the cutout and also allow you to remove it easily otherwise you'd have to stick it on directly on the glass which would be a more semi permanent solution. But if you really want to do it without the back protector then just take a piece of paper and etch around with a pencil and you should have a good template to cut around.
I'm thinking of cutting out an opening for the Sony logo but I'm afraid if it might look like cheap. I may try to hunt down some red leather if I can find it on the cheap. Maybe I can find an old school Michael Jackson jacket at the thrift store and chop it up. Also I plan to buy a Muvit Bimat case and removing the clear portion and fit the leather around the bumper area of the case. I think that might be pretty sweet.

Well here is a better idea... Just get some wide clear tape, I'd use some clear shelf liner like for cabinets and stick it to the back of the phone then draw your pattern. Peel that off the phone and lay it on some wax paper then glue the leather onto the non stick side of it and cut out the pattern. It is really just a square cutout, the hardest part would be the camera hole. Thank God this thing doesn't have a flash because cutting out that hole was a PITA. That way you will have sticky on one side and leather on the other.
The shelf liner is like 5 bucks at any grocery store.
Thanks a million man! I will try to win this battle on weekend.
Great job you should start charging people to have this done your make a killing dude.

And a soft tpu case from Aliexpress (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Orig...ransparent-TPU-Soft-Case-for/32668962511.html)
I also have the OEM hard plastic case that comes boxed with the device but which i don't prefer to use for fear of causing scratches on the phone.
Anyone got this Nillkin soft TPU case ? http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Soft...2676408023.html?spm=2114.13010308.0.49.Fdvwl0
The soft clear case i currently have is far cheaper but not completely satisfied with its quality. It catches dust inside and there are already tiny scratches on it from day one.
Hi i have this Nillkin soft TPU Case and in two version, first is transparent clear and the second is smoke trasparent. My prefered is the smoke version that give a great look to the devices, the quality is very good, is very very thin and have two caps that protect usb and audio jack from the dust.
This tpu cover for me is the most beautiful between all the gel types.
Only drawback so if we can establish is that being so thin is a little soft on the sides , for me this is not a problem but could push through a bit dusty , but this happens to me only to my work because it is not really a clean place.
Since I put this cover I have not taken off and no scratches from many days of use.

If You have the Silver P9+ model i think that the clear cover is the best solution, I prefer the smoke version because my device have the titanium grey colour and look better with that type of cover.
I show to you below like my phone is with smoke cover, if you need also a photo with clear cover I will make it for you but I think that isn't appropriate for your device colour.
I also got the nillkin clear soft TPU case. Mine's in haze gold color. Yeah, the hard case that came with the package gets slipper over time. The Nillkin case is just right. Has a nice grip to it even after prolonged use or being held.
I had a clear carbon fiber sticker installed on the back of the phone. This was to avoid the scratches from the bundled hard case as I read some of the owners got scratch marks so yeah. It's like dbrand but a local version/provider - same 3M quality stickers (Philippines).

I had a clear carbon fiber sticker installed on the back of the phone. This was to avoid the scratches from the bundled hard case as I read some of the owners got scratch marks so yeah. It's like dbrand but a local version/provider - same 3M quality stickers (Philippines).

This is what i have.
Custom pouch from Etsy.com (https://www.etsy.com/shop/mausgraudesign?ref=hp_rv)
And a soft tpu case from Aliexpress (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Orig...ransparent-TPU-Soft-Case-for/32668962511.html)
I also have the OEM hard plastic case that comes boxed with the device but which i don't prefer to use for fear of causing scratches on the phone.

Even a soft TPU case scratched my Plus. Only ONE DAY without case was enough for 3 more scratches on the back. Never used it in my pocket with keys or something like that...only at home.
I got the Smart case and so far i love it

----- got it form DECALBOYZ, SM Megamall branch. Came across their FB page and thought of giving it a try. No problems so far. Gives the phone a nice look and feel if the case is removed.

I've just got the smart case, I can only get time and date to show up in the window, but in pictures I've seen others also have weather info and notifications displayed too. Have you managed to get them working, and do you know how to change the wallpaper in the cover window?
@warea
Good, it does not come to the case, but as you've made to hide the bar? Bone arrow down to hide the toolbar. A greeting
