ATT rep said No Texting on Jetstream...? - HTC Jetstream

Though I haven't yet texted via my Jetstream, I thought it might be beneficial to have it set up in case of an emergency. (I have my voice plan with Sprint for my EVO and only a data plan through ATT for my Jetstream)
So, being at my parents' in West Virginia for the holiday where there is no Sprint coverage whatsoever, I thought it would be a good time to install ATT Messages from the market, the texting app for tablets and be able to text through the ATT mobile number given to my Jetstream.
I had some problems setting up my online ATT account to register my jetstream. I had to call ATT. I went throguh two representatives, the second calling HTC to ask them if the device would receive texts. After 30 minutes on the phoe, the representative said the Jetstream would never be able to receive texts.
So, why is there an ATT Messages app? Lol >_>
I gave up. not a real big concern.

Same hare no problems to send and receive SMS

Does the APN setting have provision for SMS? Wouldn't this mean the jetstream has GSM (voice) capability?

Here is the deal.
1. the ATT meassages app is so you can use your ATT phone account to sync texting etween the jetstream and your phone with a texting plan ATT texting plan that is... not Sprint.
2. You can download a texting app like handcent from the market and text directly from your Jetstream at .20 cents a pop.
Hope this helps!

Have you tried google voice?

Potential Verizon Converter with some ?s

I am thinking really hard of coming to verizon from tmobile for the thunderbolt or the droid bionic. The thing is, they are expensive as hell to me, and i have no desire to spend 110-125 on a phone bill every month.
SO i figured out some ways to get a cheaper bill:
1) get the cheapest minute plan with no text (39.99) plus the data plan (29.99)
2)Use goog voice for text messages
3)Use skype for unlimited voice calls(9.99)
The only thing is i dont know how the quality of skypes voice calls are when going over 3g. As long as i can make decent calls over 3g and receive them with no problems, then it sounds like a decent plan to save money.
What do you all think?

umm you will need to find a hacked .apk of skype to make calls over 3G. honestly its not worth the trouble.

+1 The call quality on 3G leaves a lot to be desired...unless it's 4am and you live 1/2 mile from a tower with an unobstructed view...
Umm... I use GV for some of my voice calls, and I have confirmed that it work via numbers not bing shown on my cell bill. Download GV and GV call back. I don't know how it works, but it does.

Roaming in Canada

So I'm going to be in Montreal this weekend and I'm usually lost without my phone so I would like to be able to use it there.
I was wondering if anyone knew what the associated costs are for voice calls, texys, and possibly data. I am on Sero Premium in case that matters.

i was roaming a few months back on the everything data plan and the rates were quite high for data. i didn't make any phone calls. if you receive any text messages while roaming, they charge, i think 10 cents a message.
after all the extra roaming charges, they'll usually tax everything on a % and also tax the roaming charges.
i'm personally not a big fan of having to pay extra for a service so i used airplane mode and went over wifi when i could .. otherwise as soon as you flip off airplane mode, your device will grab all text messages waiting for it.
for me, transitioning networks to roaming, i received one text message duplicated 100 times. i wasn't too excited about those extra charges.
pulled from a sprint page after searching for montreal canada:
Voice Pricing: $0.59/minute
Special Voice Pricing: $0.20/minute
Data Pricing: $0.002/KB
Text Pricing: Plan
hope that helps!
Wow that's expensive. Air plane mode it is lol. Is there a way to get Google maps offline. That's what I'm most worried about haha

I just got the HTC EVO View 4G off a deal on the internet and I really don't want to activate with Sprint (bad issues about 10 years ago). Is there any way to activate it on any other network carrier or am I stuck with SPRINT or WIFI?

This doesnt belong in development.. I'm not sure though... I heard you can get 4g service with clear since they provvide sprint with 4g service.. Not sure about 3g though
Edit - Misunderstood the question for some reason

He means using 4G on a different carrier.
You can activate it on cricket service, I've done one and it works pretty well. Of course you will only get 3g instead of 4g as Cricket does not have 4g yet. I had everything working except incoming calls would not ring through, still working on it. However, texting, mms, web, apps, and google voice worked great. I could get incoming and outgoing calls through google voice just fine.

How much does cricket service cost a month?
Sent from my PG41200 using xda premium
Cricket has an android plan for their smart phones which gives you unlimited talk/text/data for $55 per month. That is the method I used. Their 3g is pretty decent where I'm at, but like most carriers Cricket will throttle you if you exceed your data usage. I have not been throttled yet, but I do not use an awful lot of data. I believe there is a way to use the $45 per month plan which requires a few more steps flashing the View, but I have not tried it and I am not sure how reliable it would be.
I saw a program called flash to talk android studio that might let you do it. Thing is , its $50 for the program and $5 each time you use it. I think a lot of stores use it to flash android phones between carriers. If its worth it to you, check it out.

I currently use mine on boostmobile for 3g and i use clearwire for 4g. did a few things that im sure i cant speak of here. but yes you can put it on other carrier's. where i am at cricket/metro doesnt work so i could not go that route otherwise i may have. I use boostmobile because 4g can be spotty sometimes and the 3g is a good backup anywhere 4g doesnt kick in. i had it on sprint but for 1gig of data my monthly was coming in at like 50 with insurance and taxes and no 4g...just pathetic. my alternative gives me pay as you go like 11 bucks a month flat no taxes unlimited 3g/text/no phone at least the normal way but till that is figured out i'm happy using groove ip with google since my data is always on no need to spend talk minutes just use data for talk hence why it costs .35cents a day. and as for 4g well i'm on an older clear plan and i share it with my hotspot(switching back through the login page pretty easy) again i'm not explaining how to do it as in many places its not allowed to talk of the method's tut, i'm just sharing that there are ways. If I was able to use it on other carriers that worked in my area i would or if sprint wouldnt try and be a ripoff and give a decent plan a realistic plan i would just stick with them.

sprint airave

does anyone have this thing? Does it cost any money per month? been wanting to get one because my coverage at work sucks.
Yes its great, when my internet provider isn't messed up. U just called and complained about crappy coverage and they gave it to me free and no charge per month. Of course I had to front the $100.00 at first for the device and then they credit right back.

o wow i didnt know that. imma try it right now.
Yes just got shipped one.
When I picked up my 4G LTE, they tried to sell us on the Home phone connect to use instead of our homeline for $20 a month. We get 14day trial on it and when I asked him what if reception sucks, he gave me a 800# to call to get a airave.
We called that Monday and it was here by Wed, hooked it up and it works. Our cell reception at home is fine so we may take it to my parents house as cell recept there sucks.
As far as the home phone connect, it sucks taking it back. sound quality sucked sounded very distant compared to my digital home line. The only thing that sucks is getting the home phone connect took $100 off of my Evo 4G LTE due to a promotion. But a 2yr contract on crappy home line is not worth the $100.
So yes call and get a airave, it cost us nothing to get it in fact we asked to get two one of us and one for my parents since once of our cell lines is for them. They said the 2nd airave would cost money.
The only thing to keep in mind is that the Airave uses your bandwidth and relies upon your network uses to keep call quality up. For example, on my 3Mbit line, if someone starts downloading something during a call, I will suddenly sound like I'm underwater. Of course, there are ways to mitigate that (thank god for DD-WRT QoS settings!).
With my OG Evo and Evo 3D, I was able to stop using my Airave over time. But now with the Evo LTE, I think I need to bring my Airave back out of storage. This thing is almost -30dBm worse than my OG Evo!
Normally you have to pay for the airrave and it's service its like $100-$200 for the unit and $5 a month.. Something like that... But... If you have really crappy service at home, you can complain about your service and ask for the irave yo be free and no monthly fee.... They gave it to me like that.....
The airrave does use your home ISP bandwidth so make sure you have a good up and down rate.... I think minimum 3 megabits down and I forget up.... The airrave Sprint gives out now still has the repeated text message issue... But hopefully you don't have that problem...
Got mine for free but there's a glitch in the system that Sprint is aware of and working on an update for. With my 3D, it would send/receive the same texts multiple times, so I had to stop using it. Haven't had the same problem with the Evo LTE...yet.

Do you happen to remember what the 800 number was? I have horrible signal at my house, and when I called Sprint about it today (hoping to get an airave), they said that any problems with dropped calls or delayed text messages were because I use Google Voice on my phone and that I would need to uninstall the app to fix it, or contact Google. I don't believe that for a minute, since the app should work fine assuming I get at least some amount of signal for data to be transmitted.
I've had an Airave since last December. I got it by calling sprint and complaining about coverage in my house and the fact that I don't use a land-line. If you ask nicely, or whine enough (depending upon your strategy), you can get customer service to send you one for free. You do have to agree to return the unit if you are no longer on a mutli-month contract, or anytime that Sprint requests it back if they detect that it has not been in service for more than 3 months. If you do get one, you'll need to call for them to provision it after you receive it. To do this, you'll have to connect the Airave directly to your broadband modem ahead of any routers. The Airave has a router built in, but it sucks. After its been provisioned, you can move it behind your router BUT you must be capable of opening all VPN traffic through your router. This might mean specifically enabling VPN, PPTP, L2TP, etc.

Like others have said, if you call Sprint and tell them you have bad coverage and that you know people that have recommended the airave and that Sprint covered the charge....then they usually send it out for free. An FYI, you will still have to pay taxes and the admin charge on the airave, even if comped (I think it's a couple of bucks). Also, while the airave can transmit data, it does so at a very, very slow rate (some people get dial up speeds).

We are having the same problem, my Evo 3D, Evo 4G work fine, but the Evo LTE cannot send text messages, but can receive them. I'm on a 1 year old Airave
Thanks,
Jay
Evo lte with airwave here. I have none of the problems you guys have mentioned. I never set the box up in front of my router either. cable modem >> router >> airwave and all works fine. If you want to change any of the settings I believe you have to be connected behind the airwave. I got mine for free due to almost zero service here between a few hills.
I have the Airvana brand Airave I got last year (the 3G version) and I have no issues with my LTE on it sending or receiving text messages. In fact, as soon as I get home my LTE connects to it right away.
Got my Airvana Airave today. It is a very simple install, however once it was fully connected none of my phones would register to to the device.
After a bit of digging online I found that you need to log onto your sprint account and change the settings of the airave by default it is set for restricted access, however there are no numbers in the access list. I changed the setting to unrestricted and now all my devices connect.
Really good 3g speeds on my OG EVOs and my LTE. The only issue I have is that your location as recognized by LBS apps (weather, google ect..) is not accurate. This is a known issue according to the Sprint forums.
I have the original Airwave at work connected to the commercial ISP. By default, it was wide open supporting up to 3 devices at once. The Internet speed is tied to if the phone can reach a real tower and if it can't (even in the Airwave coverage area), then it will use the Airwave at super slow speeds. Also the original Airwave requires the device to be able to get a GPS lock to ensure that it isn't used out the the Sprint area.
But over all it works pretty well. Because I was able to talk my employer into letting me use it at work, because of safety reasons and customer experience since I left it open to everyone.
Like stated, Sprint doesn't charge for it since I originally complained that I got no service at work.

[Q] anyone else have 4g/lte tab??

I just put in a tmobile sim card in my HDx 7. I was under the impression that data would only flow when you registered with tmobile for either a postpaid tablet plan or the prepaid data for tablet that can be the 200 mb free or add more to that.
I have data flowing without signing up for anything. I can connect to aol, amazon, and stream music. Is this uncommon? As long as I have free data I'm not going to sign up for anything. I don't have a tmobile account so I don't think they can charge me?? Any feedback?
It came with an att sim. That also connected to data, but I didn't check if I could access anything. I switched to the tmobile sim.
**************************************************
Alas.....free data has run it's course. Had to sign up today. But since it's free, no problem.

I never thought to test but for you I did!
I have t-mobile lte in the status bar. I ran OOkla speedtest/speedtest.net and here are the results.
ping- 40 ms DL-11.62 mbps UP- 20.90 (wow!) Why the upload speed is twice that of the DL speed is weird. I only ran it once since I only have 200 mb free plan. I'll check how much data that used.
************************************************************************************
After using the speedtest app, t-mobile never deducted any data from my 200mb free. Weird. It's been almost a week. Data should have updated by now.
Wow that's not bad at all. Thanks for the info. I might just consider getting one of these now that they're on sale.

I just want to add I am in North Jersey which has great tmobile service. The only problem is what you expect with the 1700 band which is no signal deep into big buildings, like the back of Shoprite, or costco. Stuff like that. I haven't tested tmo lte since I switched back to att with my family for my cellphone. I don't lose att service in shoprite or costco, so there is a difference. But both use band 4 lte, so they should perform the same.
I have a question for other lte kindle users. Is it possible to enable sms on the kindle hdx 7 via data? Outside of whatsapp or GV over wifi. I know there was a work around for the nexus 7 lte that allowed sms but not mms.
Call over data would be great but I don't think that is going to happen. Talkatone, GV, skype will have to do.
Talkatone has reconfigured their set up that use to use GV as a go between. GV is no longer involved. I got an email giving 30 min. of call out time to re sign up with their new talkatone. You get a telephone number, and 10 free minutes to call out, with an additional 10 to link your cell number and facebook acct. They said this is to make sure you are a real person, but.....I have enough stuff demanding you sign in with your facebook acct. I don't need anymore. I'll stick with 10 free. You can buy 60 min. for $0.99. That's $0.0165 per min. or approx. 1.5 cents per minute. And their customer service is superb. They got back to me in 24 hrs via email, and stayed with me till I got all my various accounts sorted out. They were following up my emails within 30 min to an hour.
And it's free!
Anyway to enable sms on this tab?
I just got a data sim off ebay. $12, t-mo with 1gb lte, then drops to 3g unlimited till the end of the month and unlimited texting. This sim had 6 months prepaid for your $12. Just wondering if I can use the texting on my kindle lte. Assuming I did not get ripped off that is! lol. Seller had 100% positive feedback with lots of transactions.
Can this tablet be hacked to get sms working? I read somewhere someone has incoming working, but not outgoing.
Google searched and nothing comes up. Not anywhere.
