Has anyone bothered to try and use the Touch Pro with their "1x Unlimited Mobile Browser" plan? I know that Bell tries to sell the user on their "Email and Internet" "data" plans when this phone is purchased, but the phone is capable of 1x so there is no reason why the 1x mobile browser shouldnt work unless they disable it on your account when they set this phone up (which they shouldnt if its part of your current contract). I've never had to pay any extra with my Unlimited Mobile Browser plan and I've used my phone for more than just web browsing. I've used it for streaming media, downloading from my ftp server at home, connecting to various servers using 3rd part apps, email, etc. Hell, I've even tethered once or twice downloading a few MB of data and not been charged.
I'm wanting to get this phone but I really dont want to give up my sweet corporate account just to use the data. Thankfully it has wifi so I'll be able to use the net regardless of my data/mobile browser plan.
They wouldn't let me sign up with the Unlimited Mobile Browser, they said that its not compatible. It seems to be an option online but not in the store or over the phone. I argued with them about this but they woudn't budge.

I'm betting because it works just fine on the unlimited browser plan. The friggin thing has wifi, not EVERYONE will need a data plan for it.
I've actually started a thread at forum.bell.ca asking the same thing... we'll see what their response is...
http://forums.bell.ca/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=321&sid=084842dcba10b12552284596cb8fe64d
Its lame, my friend has the old HTC Touch and has the Fun 15 bundle. He gets voicemail, call display, unlimited text messaging and unlimited mobile browsing for $15.
I have the same Fun 15 bundle but they got me paying an extra $30 for the unlimited data plan. We use the phone for all the same things. Opera browsing, You Tube, Messenger, Email.
Were using the same services and I'm paying 3 times as much because they classify the phone differently. The bell rep I talked to agreed its bullsh*t but thats just the way it is.
I'm almost half tempted to just try using a touch pro with my current plan... just to see if they're bluffing or not. Now I too have the "1x Unlimited Mobile Browser" but for me it's built into my plan and doesn't even come up as a removable option under my features. But here's the kicker: my current phone is, though 3 years old, an EV-DO phone (Samsung SPH-A920) that can manage data either in 1x or EV-DO mode. (Though technically the network is called 1xEV-DO... but that's not the point!) I don't pay anything extra for when I use my internet when it's in a EV-DO region (I'm in Edmonton). Did a little test and downloaded Google maps, took about 20 seconds for 420KB (~21KB/sec) daveloft, I'm curious what speeds you can get with the "unlimited data plan" and if the "special" data servers make a difference
I'm in Toronto and I got about 1MB downloaded using Google Maps in 20 seconds.
Can you change IMEI from a Touch?
When i bought my touch pro from bell the rep told me it would work on mobile browser. i called bell and they said that i had to buy the data plan. 5 minutes of *****ing and they gave me a $20 discount so now i dont mind. i hate how every person you talk to with bell tells you something different. luckily it worked out ok for me this time but i feel your pain.
I Tried
I have my Touch Pro from Sprint activated on MTS-Bells Partner, before this I had the vouge I activated and the guy did not change my plan so I should still have 1x data in the EPST this is confirmed we entered the exact settings in every field that is in the EPST altho there is a couple new fields in the Touch Pro and try and try as I might still no data... only thro wifi. It works fine for a phone and texting but the data will not connect. His explanation was that the touch was built with a different hardware configuration that will allow for a "Fun" package.. Whatever that ment he said the Touch Pro no matter what we do just can not be configured to allow that type of simple connection for data it must have a A Key inserted to function.
I have not yet given up as I think that if I had a stock BELL shipped rom to flash [that would give me a new Bell PRI and PRL firmware update] it may work as I am now using a HTC Touch PRL from my vogue with a PRI from the original Sprint... the sprint PRL works as well but I was constantly in roaming mode... no data in any combination... tried every possible thing I could and I am big on problem solving..... no luck... (
hey guys today i am leaving on vacation right after school and we are doing the 20 hour drive to Florida then getting on a cruise there. The cruise is going to mexico and basically the west Caribbean so if i have my fascinate with me and just have it off will i get charged with roaming charges because i will have an influx of text's saturday because my friends will be texting me for my birthday.
I went on a cruise last October and took my Original Droid. I just put turned off mobile data and was fine, though I only use Google Voice for texting. Perhaps someone can speak to what happens to texts specifically.
For what it's worth, GPS does work with out cell signal ... I used My Tracks in Veracruz to make a map of a tour we did. There wasn't any "map" until we got back to the States and I turned data on, but it did store all the GPS location info.
K thanks but I do need to know about texting
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
I got charged for texts at the prevailing ship phone rate when the phone was on. Got no explanation from Royal Caribibbean for it. No charges with it powered off
If I turn off data I can't listen to music without the chance of geting charged for texts
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
If you use anything (data/text/voice) while roaming you will be charged.
I was just in China, data connected twice, in airplane mode the rest of the time. I didn't use it for anything, it was just backround data updating widgets, it cost $3.20 for that.
Keep it in airplane mode and use wifi.
In my home I get horrible 3g speeds. So bad I have to use wifi. Where I work (outside) I get terrible service and bad 3g speeds. I called Sprint about this issue and was told that area has good (not great) but good coverage. They told me to bring the phone in to have it looked at. I know its not the phone because this was the same with my Hero. I just want to know what my options are. I honestly feel like they should put a discount on my bill or give me unlimited roaming. This is a very bad problem. I drop calls like its going out of style and 3g isnt even an option. As for 4g, nothing at all. This has been going on for a while and Im really getting fed up. Any ideas?
We are all in the same boat.
As soon as we get a radio update.
Pardon my ignorance because I'm not sure how it works or what hardware you need, but the Sprint Airave signal booster is supposed to work great. A friend of mine works at Sprint and was telling me that evidently it plugs into your wireless router??? and goes for around $100 bucks but he swears that he's getting full bars throughout his entire house including the basement. Might at least help while at home...
Technically we all have free roaming. We roam for free on Verizon's network so in theory, you should never drop a call if you have either Sprint or Verizon service where you are. I know it worked that way for me on the Evo 4G and once I turned off all the roaming guard crap on the 3vo, it seems about as good as my old Evo 4G. So have you gone into Settings, Wireless, Mobile Network, and turned off the roaming notification sound and made sure you turn OFF all roaming guards?
Edit: BTW my neighbor has the Airave and it does give him 4 to 5 bars throughout his single-level 2850 sq/ft house. No problem keeping a call over there!

Called Sprint about this and the guy said Sprint charges a $36 activation fee for this type of unit. Also supposedly it does use your minutes on your plan, and you can pay an additional $10 a month to get unlimited minutes while connected to the Airave

I've heard of a bunch of people getting free airaves for having poor signal at home. Is it true that it only works for voice, though, not 3g? I can make and receive calls ok, but the 3g and 4g signals at my house are awful. And they have been for over a year. They were bad on my OG Evo. I just would like to be able to surf the net on my phone. Or, even, tether occasionally, if we loose power to the main network. Thanks.

i have had the airave since it was in existance. i was actually a tester for them before they went public. the one you linked it the old model 1X. the one you want is http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-20014429-85.html
it is 3G capable. all and all a way better unit. if you call up explain your situation. for me what actually got me one many yrs ago was basically the truth. told them i am in a on cal field. i need my cell to ring when i am called no tgo to voicemail. if they could not provide me a way to fix it. i simply was going elsewhere. then i was offered to test a new device. ended up being the first airave. back then device was free and 4.99 a month which i was credited every month so was essentially free to me. now on the new one it is actually free per month 0 dollars. as long as you qualify.
its sprinnnnnt
Its definitely Sprint.. my company works with Sprint, and although they havn't said it was their problem, they are asking for all reports in our buildings of radio errors (network failure, data failure, can't make calls, text's come in with timestamp 4-5 minutes before the time they came in).
I personally thought it was the 3D, b/c I had a OG the day before and everything was fine, then I get to work and can't make calls with full signal. We have the sprint antanae's throughout our building, so something is up. It seems to only effect me at work though -- which is pleasantly located beneath the jet base flight path.

If you get the Airvana which is the second version of the Airave, you will get 3G as well. I've had it ever since I had my first EVO. I'm in a great coverage area but for some reason, I don't get any signal in my apartment or about a 1/2 block in either direction from my apartment.
The Airave works great. Whether or not you can get one free (normally $99 + $5 per month) depends on your situation and if you convince them its the right thing to do. I had to talk to 4 supervisors and a manager before they agreed to give it to me for free.
I got an Airave for free, just dialed 611 and talked to a rep, said I had to stand by a window or go outside to avoid dropping calls. Didn't have a problem getting one, the rep agreed that would solve the issue. Works wonders in the house.

Kinda sad that you need a airave or to go outside just to make a phone call. Did you tell sprint its 2011 ?
1. Yes there's a huge issue in terms of 3G speeds that have been going on since the Evo came out. There are more users on their network but they haven't expanded it. I took the issue so far that I was talking to people "From the Office of Dan Hesse" (Yes, I'm serious. I still have the voicemails and emails). It took them a while to go from "It might be your phone" to "OK, it's probably not your phone" to "The network in your area is crowded" to "Ok the network is overloaded everywhere". They promised me it would be fixed by May (this was going on since this past January). I used to get 1.5 Mbps 3G speeds and 15 (YES 15) Mbps 4G speeds, but now I'm lucky if I hit 500 Kbps on 3G and 4 Mbps on 4G.
And yes, they will send you an Airave. My internet bandwidth wasn't enough to support my Vonage VOIP modem and the Airave, so I put it aside. What they don't tell you is that if you don't use it for 3 months, you have to send it back or you owe them $200 (or $150, I forgot). You can always ask for it again later, but it's kind of grimy they don't tell you that. I got a surprise phone call about it. The good thing about the Airave is that after it's on your account, you can make it so that anyone can use it or you can limit it to certain phone numbers (like you and your family, for example). It does 5 calls at once tops. The BAD thing about it is that it will use your pool of minutes even if your calling a mobile number (free mobile to mobile doesn't apply).
And yes it does 3G. I HATE this about Sprint, but they're the cheapest carrier, which is why I put up with them. Also I just applied for a job with them; just waiting for the paperwork to go through on their end.
The alternative to the Airave is to download an app called Roam Control from the Market. Yeah it's like $4 but you don't need root to use it on the 3D. It lets you force roaming. But beware:
Sprint's roaming rule is this: If more than half the total minutes you use in a billing cycle are roaming minutes, for 3 months in a row, you'll get a warning letter in the mail. Do it again and they'll terminate you. Data I'm not sure, but being more expensive to them than voice, I'm gonna say don't go crazy. Also when you roam, even though it says 3G, you're on 1x.
I have thought about asking for an Airave, just havent gotten around to it. As for roaming, what people need to understand is that it really isnt free. When you roam mobile to mobile (which normally is free), eventually they start using your anytime minutes. When I had my Hero (rooted) I was able to set it to roam all the time, and I was on the phone a good 2 hours a day. Next thing I know, I had a $600 phone bill. I was told that if you use it excessively, they start to use your anytime minutes. I thought this was retarded since just about every call one makes, is to another mobile phone. I really just want them to give me unlimited roaming and Ill be set. Gonna give them a call eithher today or tomorrow and see what can be done. Airave will help me at home, but not on the road.
The Airave does have 3G but really, what's the point? It hooks to your internet router which probably has WiFi anyway so you might as well just connect via WiFi. We checked the 3G speeds on the Airave and got about 600/900. Connected to the same WiFi router, you get 17,000 and 2,000.

Just a tid-bit about roaming. Yes, it's free to roam, but I sometimes get stuck between a rock and a hard place with signal where it picks up the most faint Sprint signal, which is so weak that nothing works, but enough to not roam to VZ's network. Not much you can do about that if that happens to you.
What I just got, but haven't spent much time with yet is RoamControl (paid app in market). It allows you to force roaming and works without root on the Evo 3D. Though, I do want to say word of warning that Sprint can drop you from their service all together if you abuse the roaming. Not sure what the rules are about it, but word of warning.

The Airave broadcasts it's own CDMA signal, and connects to your internet connection to route calls. If you call Sprint and complain about coverage, they'll usually give you an Airave for free with free service. I've got one (Airvana w/3G), and it works excellent.

We get coverage in the house, but it's a low signal with the occasional dropped call. The airave assures that we don't have any dropped calls.

Though I haven't yet texted via my Jetstream, I thought it might be beneficial to have it set up in case of an emergency. (I have my voice plan with Sprint for my EVO and only a data plan through ATT for my Jetstream)
So, being at my parents' in West Virginia for the holiday where there is no Sprint coverage whatsoever, I thought it would be a good time to install ATT Messages from the market, the texting app for tablets and be able to text through the ATT mobile number given to my Jetstream.
I had some problems setting up my online ATT account to register my jetstream. I had to call ATT. I went throguh two representatives, the second calling HTC to ask them if the device would receive texts. After 30 minutes on the phoe, the representative said the Jetstream would never be able to receive texts.
So, why is there an ATT Messages app? Lol >_>
I gave up. not a real big concern.

Does the APN setting have provision for SMS? Wouldn't this mean the jetstream has GSM (voice) capability?

Here is the deal.
1. the ATT meassages app is so you can use your ATT phone account to sync texting etween the jetstream and your phone with a texting plan ATT texting plan that is... not Sprint.
2. You can download a texting app like handcent from the market and text directly from your Jetstream at .20 cents a pop.
Hope this helps!

I just put in a tmobile sim card in my HDx 7. I was under the impression that data would only flow when you registered with tmobile for either a postpaid tablet plan or the prepaid data for tablet that can be the 200 mb free or add more to that.
I have data flowing without signing up for anything. I can connect to aol, amazon, and stream music. Is this uncommon? As long as I have free data I'm not going to sign up for anything. I don't have a tmobile account so I don't think they can charge me?? Any feedback?
It came with an att sim. That also connected to data, but I didn't check if I could access anything. I switched to the tmobile sim.

Alas.....free data has run it's course. Had to sign up today. But since it's free, no problem.

I never thought to test but for you I did!
I have t-mobile lte in the status bar. I ran OOkla speedtest/speedtest.net and here are the results.
ping- 40 ms DL-11.62 mbps UP- 20.90 (wow!) Why the upload speed is twice that of the DL speed is weird. I only ran it once since I only have 200 mb free plan. I'll check how much data that used.
************************************************************************************
After using the speedtest app, t-mobile never deducted any data from my 200mb free. Weird. It's been almost a week. Data should have updated by now.
Wow that's not bad at all. Thanks for the info. I might just consider getting one of these now that they're on sale.

I just want to add I am in North Jersey which has great tmobile service. The only problem is what you expect with the 1700 band which is no signal deep into big buildings, like the back of Shoprite, or costco. Stuff like that. I haven't tested tmo lte since I switched back to att with my family for my cellphone. I don't lose att service in shoprite or costco, so there is a difference. But both use band 4 lte, so they should perform the same.
I have a question for other lte kindle users. Is it possible to enable sms on the kindle hdx 7 via data? Outside of whatsapp or GV over wifi. I know there was a work around for the nexus 7 lte that allowed sms but not mms.
Call over data would be great but I don't think that is going to happen. Talkatone, GV, skype will have to do.
Talkatone has reconfigured their set up that use to use GV as a go between. GV is no longer involved. I got an email giving 30 min. of call out time to re sign up with their new talkatone. You get a telephone number, and 10 free minutes to call out, with an additional 10 to link your cell number and facebook acct. They said this is to make sure you are a real person, but.....I have enough stuff demanding you sign in with your facebook acct. I don't need anymore. I'll stick with 10 free. You can buy 60 min. for $0.99. That's $0.0165 per min. or approx. 1.5 cents per minute. And their customer service is superb. They got back to me in 24 hrs via email, and stayed with me till I got all my various accounts sorted out. They were following up my emails within 30 min to an hour.
And it's free!
Anyway to enable sms on this tab?
I just got a data sim off ebay. $12, t-mo with 1gb lte, then drops to 3g unlimited till the end of the month and unlimited texting. This sim had 6 months prepaid for your $12. Just wondering if I can use the texting on my kindle lte. Assuming I did not get ripped off that is! lol. Seller had 100% positive feedback with lots of transactions.
Can this tablet be hacked to get sms working? I read somewhere someone has incoming working, but not outgoing.
Google searched and nothing comes up. Not anywhere.
