roaming charges? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys today i am leaving on vacation right after school and we are doing the 20 hour drive to Florida then getting on a cruise there. The cruise is going to mexico and basically the west Caribbean so if i have my fascinate with me and just have it off will i get charged with roaming charges because i will have an influx of text's saturday because my friends will be texting me for my birthday.

I went on a cruise last October and took my Original Droid. I just put turned off mobile data and was fine, though I only use Google Voice for texting. Perhaps someone can speak to what happens to texts specifically.
For what it's worth, GPS does work with out cell signal ... I used My Tracks in Veracruz to make a map of a tour we did. There wasn't any "map" until we got back to the States and I turned data on, but it did store all the GPS location info.

K thanks but I do need to know about texting

I got charged for texts at the prevailing ship phone rate when the phone was on. Got no explanation from Royal Caribibbean for it. No charges with it powered off

If I turn off data I can't listen to music without the chance of geting charged for texts

If you use anything (data/text/voice) while roaming you will be charged.
I was just in China, data connected twice, in airplane mode the rest of the time. I didn't use it for anything, it was just backround data updating widgets, it cost $3.20 for that.
Keep it in airplane mode and use wifi.

[Q] 3G drop out. on and off all day

my 3G drops out on and off all day on for a min off for a min.. not dropping to 1 x.. its dropping to no connection at all.. i have read somewhere on here that other people were having the problem.. and then they pointed to verizon.. i called verizon and there telling me everything is ok.. they tried to reset my esn or something (could not understand the accent). then i was told to reboot my phone.. so i did.. but the problem remains.. it has crippled my phone.. i was wondering if anyone can elaborate on what is causing the issue.. weather verizon is lieing to me or if i should flash back to stock,, throw my phone in the dogs water dish, or perform a voodoo ritual... thanks in advance..
I had this same problem. What I did was activate an old phone then wait like 5 min then reactivated my fascinate. That seems to have fixed it
Bummer.. I don't have another one

I have seen many people saying you can go to a Verizon store and they have "test" phone that they can swap onto and off of your line for free.
You might investigate that further and see if its true in your area.
Call verizon tech support, try to get a level 2 tech, say you want a DMU or TSN reset or something...
Say you read forums about it fixing 3g issues
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051543
Here is the original thread, read it! This fixed my 3g issues!
I will try this tomorrow when I have another phone to call from.. I'll let you know how I make out

After a long hold with a level 2 tech, he told me I had a corrupt data connection and he said he was surprised I could connect at all and that he never seen it before.. He reset my data and all is fine now

What does this have to do with it?

I did the dmu reset earlier. Called in on my phone and they went over a few things and then when I hung up they said pull the battery and wait five minutes while did the work on their end. Took a twenty minute nap and put battery back in. Haven't noticed my signal drop until just typing right now.
I had the 3G drop out. Was happening for several days, getting worse. It would take an hour to send a pix message. Browser, Facebook would rarely connect. Called Verizon. The first rep makes you do the "stupid person" test making sure your data is on, pull the battery out, etc. Once all that doesn't work, she connected me to a tech. The tech reset the connection/flushed something and had me turn my phone back on after a few minutes. My 3G is good again. She told me if it happens again, do a 'master reset' which I assume is just a factory reset.
What's interesting is that my wife and I have the same phone (Fascinate) running community rom 1.2 and only I have the problem. It might be because I commute by subway to work. She does not. Every day to work, I am constantly losing service on the subway so I switch it to airplane mode so it stops wasting battery searching for service. When I go over the bridge, I turn airplane off, 3G connects, sync some mail, download as much as I can before I go back underground, turn airplane mode back on. Once at work, service is turned back on and I turn wifi on. Going home, repeat steps in reverse. When I'm home, I am using wifi, too.
So I'm doing a lot of switching back and forth every day. Perhaps I could've 'corrupted' the data connection by all the switching/disabling of service. Not sure what everyone's habits are but this is my guess.

Keep using Fascinate after freezing Verizon plan?

Hey everyone, I'm currently in the Air Force and I'm getting stationed in Germany. And due to that I'm going to be freezing my Verizon account till I get back.
Now I really love this phone, and I'd like to keep using it; however, will I be out of luck without an actual service plan? I'm not talking about running it without a data plan. I mean actually no service whatsoever other than the Wifi.
Can it be done?
Can I has Wifi smartphone in Germany?
Thanks much beforehand for any help!

Umm, why couldn't you? Put the phone in airplane mode, turn wifi on/off as you please. Last I checked, the didn't ban Wifi in Europe or Germany (yet, the EU does stupid stuff sometimes)

Is it really that easy? Also, what might that limit as far as functionality of the phone other than just calls and texts?
Also, would I need to worry about accidentally turning off the Airplane mode and getting charged again, or does the phone just stop receiving service period?
Thanks much for the help and I'll feel kinds silly if it really was this easy ha.
If you froze your VZW account, you should stop receiving service entirely, and not have to worry about getting calls, 3G, etc. But I could be wrong about that, so if someone could confirm...
Also, does Germany even have CDMA towers? I thought the rest of the world was on GSM.

other countries use cdma (china and india have major carriers that do) and several others as well (peru, etc) if you go to verizon's international travel coverage you can actually see (or used to anyway) what country had what type of coverage and where on a map
however gsm is the major technology used worldwide...i dont have figures handy, but id guess its like 85/15 or something split wise
with emerging lte adoption though at some point in the future id imagine things becoming more unified...or even further split as many carriers may stick with hdspa+ rather than spend the money on lte infrastructure...who knows
i have an epic 4g that has no sevice at all and my kids use it as an ipod with
wifi work great text also as long as u have wifi.
ps i got the phone from a buddy that could not pay a bill for two phone so he suspended the line.
If you deactivate your service, the phone will attempt to connect, but won't be able to. I doubt many overseas carriers would allow data usage for roaming anyway even if airplane mode did get turned off, I'd think they probably only allow calls/texts.
Airplane mode (to save battery from frivolous radio connection attempts) + wifi. You're good.
No cdma in Germany, so no network to connect to to begin with. Verizon wont even let you use a phone in Europe without a special international roaming thing on your account anyways, so they certainly wont allow it to connect if you're suspended

I was in Germany about 3 weeks ago and I kept my phone in airplane mode and turned WIFI on and off when I wanted internet access. The problem was that I was not able to find any free WIFI - hotel, Starbuck's, etc. all charged a fee. Getting on the internet was not worth the going rate of 5 euros an hour. Your experience may be different; however, except in housing it's unlikely that you will find WIFI on base.
In the past I used an old droid as a portable device around the house. I never enabled airplane mode. I even took it on a trip with me for a media device. I got stranded in TX via buddy pass. I had to take a 27 hour bus trip home. My regular phone died. I couldn't charge the battery on the bus. So I used the droid to call Verizon to turn it on. And then turned it back off when I got home. I never had any issues with getting a data charge on my plan when I was using it as a portable. If it's deactivated in their computers I don't see how it would connect to a phone service.
I assume() that this would be the same with the Fascinate. The Fascinate is nothing more than a small handheld computer that make phone calls. Turn off the phone service and it should continue to do everything else as normal.
I would look into getting a skype account. It may even have some type of free package. You could try to make wifi calls in a pinch. I have no experience with that, but it seems like it would work. I don't know how much it would cost.

Roaming in Canada

So I'm going to be in Montreal this weekend and I'm usually lost without my phone so I would like to be able to use it there.
I was wondering if anyone knew what the associated costs are for voice calls, texys, and possibly data. I am on Sero Premium in case that matters.

i was roaming a few months back on the everything data plan and the rates were quite high for data. i didn't make any phone calls. if you receive any text messages while roaming, they charge, i think 10 cents a message.
after all the extra roaming charges, they'll usually tax everything on a % and also tax the roaming charges.
i'm personally not a big fan of having to pay extra for a service so i used airplane mode and went over wifi when i could .. otherwise as soon as you flip off airplane mode, your device will grab all text messages waiting for it.
for me, transitioning networks to roaming, i received one text message duplicated 100 times. i wasn't too excited about those extra charges.
pulled from a sprint page after searching for montreal canada:
Voice Pricing: $0.59/minute
Special Voice Pricing: $0.20/minute
Data Pricing: $0.002/KB
Text Pricing: Plan
hope that helps!
Wow that's expensive. Air plane mode it is lol. Is there a way to get Google maps offline. That's what I'm most worried about haha

Run Google Maps
Menu->More->Labs
Enable “Pre-cache map area”
Go back to the map and find Montreal
Long press on the map
Tap the bubble (whatever random address pops up)
Tap “Pre-cache map area” and the 10 miles surrounding the address will be downloaded

data not working on wifi when in calls - sprint

I have a sprint HTC - One Max with current OTA - rooted of course - Kit Kat.
When I'm on calls it does not allow me to use my data on my wifi at all. I have always been able to
on my Galaxy 2 phone but not with this new HTC One Max.
I've tried using it with the mobile data turned off or on in settings.
Even though it shows wifi connectivity on status bar it still doesn't allow
for a page to load, speedtest to be done, zello to stay logged in, etc.
no one experiencing my duplex wifi while in call not working issue?
Is no one else having this problem ? I'm about to do a flash back to the stock ROM to see if wifi works simultaneously while in a call but if it's a fault in the programming / chipset then there's no point in me trying. Someone please reply so I don't waste my time doing something that someone else has tried.
Well I am on Verizon but sometimes my data works and sometimes it doesn't during a call. WiFi will stay connected and work fine.

Mine isn't working at all when I'm on the call, even when the wifi connectivity is on the status bar.. as soon as I disconnect calls my push to talk app/browser/etc start back working... Sometimes the wifi doesn't work at all on the phone even if I'm not on a call, but the S2 I have works like a charm with the same cradle point mbr1200/verizon data card that I've had for years. within 5 feet from the router too...
stock. non rooted, on sprint.
i was on the phone with my mom on moms day and was on wifi here at the house.
i was successfully able to use google voice to send and receive texts and also was surfing the web for a phone for my mom, so i have had good results with wifi calling.

I'm having issues with data also. I have the Verizon onemax. I started having this problem about 3 days ago. I have issues staying connected to 4g never used to have this problem. I live in a 4g area, when I turn off my device and wait about 10 secs then turn it back on then I get 4g for a brief period then it goes right back to 3g. Also I can't get any data when I make a phone call, that never ever happened before, I don't know why this is happining. I called Verizon and the rep told me to turn off my device then turn it back on the rep said that resets the "PRL" I TRIED THAT like I said awhile ago it worked....but only for a brief period. The Verizon rep "tech support" told me if that diddnt work that I may need to get a new SIM "which is on the way". This problem has happened on NuSense and on ViperRom, I wiped cach/dalvik/data&system and I'm still having this issue, I'm hopping the new SIM will fix this issue. Maybe we can get some help. I'm hopping because this is very annoying!

Problem diagnosed but not fixed
I have diagnosed my problem on simultaneous calling with data connection non existence even with wifi symbol on status bar...
The data on wifi works on calls if I'm not using a bluetooth device, meaning if I'm using the handset or the speaker phone it works fine, even if the headset stays connected to the phone, wifi still works as long as I'm not using the bluetooth for my call... kinda defeats purpose of having a smartphone if you can't use all features... backward thinking htc.

That sounds like a load of crap on the PRL note, which stands for preferred roaming list, aka while off verizon towers... network / data provisioning should fix the problem... which on sprint's is a quick ##72786# to get network provisioning to reset itself... Been doing that alot lately with the towers here getting the upgrade bugs. Had a nexus 5 phone in a power cycle loop when LTE was turned on in specific areas, had to put it in airplane mode quickly before it powered down, change settings to cdma, leaving it like that til the area was fixed. Only phone that had that problem that I know of. My HTC One Max kept losing tower connection randomly and I still have issues where certain towers won't put the call through to my phone. Which I've heard is an "on going" issue from sprint in certain "markets" LoL... (My guess is any of the newly upgraded towers with spark)
