Prefix [View] and [Flyer] - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Oke guys, spread the word if you see it.
But i think its wise to start using prefixes [View] and [Flyer] in general section.
Since we dont have a separated Q&A.
So [Q][View] and [Q][Flyer] in General section will do.
Thanks

Wilco. Thanks!

Thanks for getting this done Whiskey. Hat's off to you for the hard work

why not have our own forum?
Their hardware might be similar but the software, which is what the forum provides, is not compatible with one another, so why not a completely separate forum.
Similar to how the TMobile LG G2x and LG Optimus 2x are extremely similar but still have their own forum. I understand if the View development section was dead, but we are actually pretty lively, especially since HC got released
Who can we address this too? Im sure all my fellow Viewers agree and fell the same way

Well you can send a pm to svetius, but time will tell. In the mean time we have at least a seperate Development section. I will also flag it to svetius. If we have a lot of requests it might be possible

I second, How about Flyer/View for General, Accessories, etc... Development as is as it allows cross development visibility

Against.
I have several reasons for this.
1. They are no more separate devices that and Evo 3D devices or the Xoom models. Themes, accessories, applications are pretyy much universally interchangeable.
2. There is an established inter-connected community who share information.

That is only a part of what the site provides, granted it may be the part you are interested in but some are simply interested in knowing about themes, applications, accessories or just talking to other people with the same device. Why fragment the information?
To give a current personal example, if the view had a completely separate forum I wouldn't have done anything at all when the view HC update arrived because I simply would not have known about it.

So you dont own a view butvare still able to dev for it somehow?

Evidently

Pretty rare case I must say. Most if not all other devs only support devices they own and can test with.
Lucky for us they are merged so you could write up these guides

I second globatron's sentiments. Before I bought a few Views, I had been browsing around the BB Flyer in store and reading up on the forum here as much as I could before making an informed purchase. If it wasn't for the information I learned searching through the sections before they divided, that the View and GSM/Wifi Flyer were evidently triplet brothers, I would not have made my purchases or gained the knowledge through the information given so far between all devices.
Segregating them from the start might have been smart move to reduce newbie errors, but on the other hand it also induces a 'forgotten twin' effect for the power users and developers.
Sort of like the Desire HD and Inspire 4G, they're both nearly same yet different sections are given for both, I feel it's probably tedious for those communities because they have to switch back and forth between both sections to keep up for new development and stay on top of the game.
Too much segregation might cause more harm than good, for reaching new features, (I wouldn't have known about capacitive buttons on HC Flyer) while in the end when it just takes a simple reading comprehension and disclaimer to make sure someone don't flash/follow the wrong material.

Despite what I said, I do think the entire top level Flyer forum should be renamed Flyer/View and the General, Themes&Apps and Accessories forums likewise to reflect this twin/triplet effect.

this would be a simple/good solution, who do we beg or bribe to get the change?

Glad to see View has it owns section now after that fire sell.

Forum update: We got Flyer/View Forum renamed with sub-forums also, thx to Svetius for setting it up for me. We don't need a forum specific to The View, this will do well as development continues to grow then Flyer and View will receive their own sub-forums.
Enjoy!

[Q] Town Hall

Sorry I missed the town hall meeting. I am a noob to Roms and phone moding, I did do a lot with the original xbox back when it was fun to mod. Ok a little off toppic.
One thing that noticed you never looked at is where are your noobs (me) comming in to your site? I have only been looking at roms for about a week. All of the searches that I did about roms and rooting my phone all led me to the "The Bible" and yes where is that located at. Most people will post there they find the information. You might look at moving that post to the general tab as this is going to be one of the first places that a person is going to look to first.
This will also be a place that a noob is going to post so dumb question for the 1,000,000th time. If you expect it, it will not be a bad thing.
And yes I did to a bad flash and spent about 5 hours looking for a way to fix what I did.
Thanks for your time and have a great day/night
Good point. I myself was thinking when I first started to look into flashing ROMs and such and found the bible in the Dev section. The Vibrant Bible has lots of information and should probably be in the General Section as it does draw people to the Dev section instead of General.
Maybe it should be in the Q&A forum as it has lots of both.
One of the biggest problems with this forum seems to be that for a development forum, there is very little actual development going on. Obviously only a select group of people have the knowledge and desire to truly develop custom ROMs, but there's a role others can take too.
I've been involved in other development communities, outside of Android, and I can't recall a community as poisonous as this one. The amount of high level technical discussion is nill. As inexperienced as I am with Android, I can't remember the last post that sent me running to google to read more about something. There seems to be little to no give-and-take between developers, which is typically the most fun of any development group I've been a part of. The goal of working towards any common framework seems non-existant.
The supporters of certain ROMs resemble cults more than critical, helpful users. I can't count the amount of replies I've seen to legitimate questions or criticisms saying nothing more than, "Developer X puts in all this time, so you should just be thankful", or some iteration of that. While possibly true, that's the type of worthless hero worship that provides nothing in a community like this.
Even the individual developer forums are worthless. They're 75% "you're awesome" posts, with the other 25% being bug reports.
Obviously the popularity of XDA has made it a destination for simple support posts in addition to development discussion. I guess that's frustrating, but can be handled through moderation. I know on other forums, if I had nothing to do, I'd sit in the help section and answer posts for a couple hours. I'm sure we've all posted on other forums and received helped we're thankful for. Certainly the level of douchebagery that half the users here show isn't needed.
I don't know. Maybe all Android communities are like this. The fragmentation of the development, even on one divice, definitely doesn't help. But it's not the most enjoyable place to read I've ever found.

I am sorry that is not all that I needed to know. This was a post for an idea that was not brough up in the town hall. yes I did read the full town hall and no it was never said in the full thread. So before you give a link please make sure of the Question.
That is another reason that you get people pissed off. You have people say "this is all that I need to know" but they did not even look at the full question. This was not a question of what happened in the town hall. It was more like please think of this.
The Bilble thread is a great place for people that are new to star reading about what to do and what not to do. but it really does not have a thing to do about develement.
Thanks for all the other posters I enjoyed the coments.

We need a View 4G Section

There a lot of View 4G user like myself. Please Create a View 4G Section.
I agree
I agree with OP. Please at least put a separate section withing the Flyer section. You know like you did with the Nexus 4G? Thank you for all you do XDA...
Please, a subforum for View specific issues.
Please. I own a flyer and would get soooo pissed when a view owner would say they got netflix from the market on their "flyer"

I only agree with the OP if he means a separate subforum within the main "Flyer" forum. There is very little difference between the Flyer and View. A separate subforum for one or the other (Flyer/View) for model-specific issues would be okay. But otherwise, it fractures and dilutes the information way too much. This is how it was for the G2 and Desire Z (separate forums). If somebody found a solution for something on the G2 (that also worked on the Z), the information would take days (or maybe even weeks) to spread on the Z forum. And even then, often people would just lazily say "look in the G2 forum", and you'd have to go searching around for it. It was actually a big improvement IMO when they eventually merged the G2 and Z forums into one.
Another example, was when I was on the Tilt 2/Touch Pro 2. Things went just fine with the Tilt2 being on the same forum as the TP2. People were just good about stating which model they had. Better yet, just put your tablet model in your signature, and you never have to worry about mentioning it in your post. There are way more differences between the GSM TP2 and the CDMA one, then there are between the View and the Flyer. And all they did for the TP2 was add a subforum for CDMA-model specific issues.
For that matter, there are probably as many (if not more) differences between the WiFi-only Flyer, and the one with 3G/4G. Are we going to make a whole new forum for them, too? Don't think that's a good idea.
If people can't even get the tablet model (Flyer/View) right when they are posting, that's their own stupidity, and there is no cure for that.
^^I agree. A subforum would be more appropriate in this case.
I also agree that the View should have its own subforum in the Flyer section.
Sent from my HTC EVO View. 7" of s-off 4g Fury.
Agreed, however
I think a separate subforum would be nice, but I think us Flyer owners would rather not lose our View toting brothers to another area of the forums!
Now that we have S-Off and we can expect development to begin, I think any future confusion when ROM development starts hitting in here can be avoided by having a couple of sub-forums. VIEW General and VIEW Development at least. Just my $0.02
I am disagree because what is the big difference?
And I am sure that no newbie knows this difference and ask only View specific questions in this subforum and only there. We will have still View questions in the general part and non-View questions in the View subforum only because the owner has a view.
What we need is a simple approach to mention always the Flyer type - like this is organized in many other device forums here.
I think just posting something simple as [view] or [flyer] in the title of a rom or something else your posting that is device specific.
I would like a new View forum too, because it will get even more confusing if people don't completely describe their devices, and everybody says it will work, but on what device? I hope XDA will make a new forum.

I know I already posted on this subject, but I totally agree that it would be great to see a View General sub forum in the Flyer General section and a View Development sub forum of the Flyer Development section.
As someone relatively new to concepts like S-off and rooting, it would be nice to have a place to post quedtions and get device specific answers.

Its not rocket science, the dev should just say in the ROM description whether its for the View, Flyer, or both. If the OP doesn't say, then you ask, and either the the dev, or somebody else answers. This is how it works for every other device that I've owned.
From past experience, ROMs tend to work on all versions of a device, more so than not. If ROM Development subforum gets split up for the 2 variants, will the ROM dev be expected to post to both, if it works on both? If they don't, people will be stuck browsing both Development subforums, looking for ROMs which are compatible for their version.
Also remember the non-US 3G enabled tablet is called the flyer. I am currently running a rom for the view on my flyer, and other then the annoyance of the "missing" sim card it works fine.
IMO Simply stating View/3G or WiFi Only in the title of the rom should be more than enough. So far every fix for the flyer also works for the view. Separation is un-needed and potentially disruptive. Standardize the ROM labeling and we are golden.
Add another view owner to the /agree list for a subsection for us.
i think the forum should stay the way it is, users should be posting with the right device though it wouldnt hurt XDA devs to put HTC Flyer aka HTC Express (Sprint Evo 4g View) aka Flyer 3g aka Flyer Wifi
if people making threads cant post the correct device they shouldnt be making threads or trying to mod their devices

Question for the Developers of this forum

For all the Devs in the ASGS2 forum, are you guys finding your rom/kernel threads being clogged up with a bunch of random questions/issues? How would you feel if I made you all each a Q&A thread dedicated to your work in the Q&A forum? Do you feel that would help you/your thread? Please let me know what you think or how you feel, and hit up the poll to cast your vote.
This was done in the Cappy section because they had a minimum post restriction to keep the spoon feeding clutter down in the Dev section. Not sure if that restriction is also in this section. It was only like 10 post minimum though.
I tried to do this manually with Hellraiser, but it hasn't really taken off. To be honest, right now the I777 community isn't the epic cesspool that some other forums are. However over time this could change... But the kinds of users that clutter development threads are the kind who don't bother to go to Q&A threads - so does it really help anything?
we did this over in captivate forums, it worked well.
we did this over in inspire forums, it was met with serious backlash by lazy ass people, and ignorance to change.
tough decision. Entropy has a point, those people wouldnt bother going to a Q&A thread...the Q&A threads should be a place where the users help each other out and raise issues. the dev threads should be there to report ACTUAL issues and request features. what happens is that one person has a problem with flashing the rom and they assume its the devs fault, and the rom is broken, and they report it as a bug....its a vicious cycle that will never end.
Well this forum is for you guys, so if you dont think its needed then I wont worry about it... just trying to help all the great devs out and make things easier if I can.
If you guys have any other suggestions or want to try something out, feel free to say.

im no developer but ive been around the forums and have come from a forum with less of a following. the problem is that the people who are asking the question's in the threads are 60-70% of the time dont read directions and will end up posting in the wrong forum anyways.... its a novel idea but i dont think it will take off, unless you lock the rom forum to devs and testers only

That sort of defeats the purpose I think, and I also believe that most Devs here like to have people post in their threads.
Alright guys. Ill keep it the way it already is. If your threads seem to get clogged, or you want your own dedicated Q&A thread, let me know and Ill make the adjustment at that time. Thanks for all your feedback.
I would appreciate it, so far most of the users in this forum are above average when it comes to figuring things out own their own (searching). Only thing is I wish there was more ROM choices/themes.
I don't feel the need for a Q&A thread right now. I find it a bit tedious to follow two threads for my ROMs instead of one. Also, I don't really mind a few redundant questions here and there as long as it doesn't get out of hand, which it hasn't yet.

Not a dev, but I do post quite often in both the dev and QA sections. I don't think there should be two threads. It seems it is more effective if there is only one thread dedicated to that rom/modem/kernel, with all bugs and support given out. Of course if you have a more complex issue, it should have it's own thread. But small issues with the rom or questions regarding how something works should be contained in the same thread as the development of the rom.

i agree with this, but there tends to be an influx of people posting the same CRAP over and over and over and over in a dev thread. personally i dont give 2 flips about someone saying "THANKS!" or "CANT WAIT TO FLASH THIS!" or "WHEN IS THE NEXT UPDATE?!", i want to see CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms, requests, or logcats. having to filter through all the BS really makes it difficult to discern actual issues from fluff. there tends to be a lot of fluff that happens.
i see the dev threads as being specifically for requests/bug-tracking/break-fixes. the other stuff belongs in a thread where the users can praise, bicker, ask questions repeatedly (how do i flash this?). it should be peers helping out peers, and let the devs work on their stuff. but alas, we will never have utopian bliss....
we are lucky we havent seen much of that at all here in the GS2 forums, but man some of the other forums are riddled with noobery. lets just try to keep it clean and ask our members to mind the rules and understand whats going on.
Yeah... I think as long as things don't become like the Infuse forums where some of the ROM threads became utter nightmares we'll be fine. But let's keep it in our back pocket in case we need it. I may even discontinue my Hellraiser Q&A for the time being.
If there's anything we may need, it may potentially be to split the development forum like the I9100 forums were in order to differentiate ports of other developer's ROMs from actual development. It isn't too bad here yet, but the Infuse forums are chock full of integrated Hellraiser ports and it's difficult to find original development among all of the ports.
I think the definitions for "Original" vs "not original" in the I9100 forums seem to be a bit arbitrary, if we DO ever go that route here I think it needs to be clearer.
"Original" - You yourself have taken a stock ROM (may be stock for another device) and modified it from scratch on the I777. All kernel development can remain here in my opinion. Discussion of actual porting techniques used by the other section can be here.
"Not original" - Another dev creates a ROM for another device, and an I777 user ports it to the I777 via Hellraiser or another technique. e.g. Hellraiser-integrated ROMs and such.
We don't need this yet here but we may - and honestly the Infuse forums need it.

I did this in the forums that PG mentioned. While yes it was a bit of a headache in the inspire forums ( they are getting used to it) and the captivate section went off without an issue I would say to go for it and if needed ill help where I can. I have to admite the 2 forums that I did this for once it was gotten by most needs less cleaning now for sure. Mainly when other users back you on it.
Personally I think it would be really helpful if individual posts could be categorized and/or sorted within a thread. That way all posts relating to a specific rom/development topic could remain in the same thread, but you could then filter out the garbage, sort through the questions, and find posts that are truly relevant to the topic or project or whatever. It would still depend on the users to label posts properly, but I think we're all in agreement that there is no perfect solution to the issue.

I'm not a Dev myself but I do feel two threads isn't an ideal solution... Most ignorant people who can't find an answer in five second's or just don't feel like even trying to search will always head to the source of their ROM issues. Now if the method 10tonhammer described seems like an okay idea as long as any average person takes the task upon themselves to tag their post properly. Either way I'm not exactly the prime example of good manners on XDA (Feel's Guilty)
I am learning at least <3
Lastly Thank you to all Dev's and Mod's who make this the most pleasant interaction between Developer and User possible.

Go home newbs

I come to xda for informed discussion about a device and for device development. I don't know what has happened to these forums, but I do have a few humble suggestions:
1. If you don't have a prime / aren't expecting one / looking to get one / involved in development LEAVE. Go troll elsewhere. It has become too difficult to find useful posts because of all of the BS in this forum. The sheer volume of it is frankly shocking. I don't blame the mod because I know he mods several forums (including my old haunt the mesmerize forum) and you know probably has like a job and ****. Cleaning the amount of crap going on right now is enough to two full time jobs.
2. No offense-actually **** that- every offense intended- if you are debating between this and an iOS device, this is not the forum for you. I'm not saying don't get the prime. I'm sure its just as good for newbies as it is for others, but the very fact that you are considering an iOS device as a prime alternative proves to me that you are in the wrong place. I'm not saying the prime is free of defects or anything-it certainly has its quirks. But half the fun of Linux and open source is the quirks and that you can change anything about your device. Customization and quirks are at the core of Linux.
3. Notice the word developers in the URL of this site. I'm not a Dev, but I am an IT admin and do at least have a clue of what the **** is going on. Unless things have changed, this forum is for people who have a clue. If "#cat brain | grep -i clue" doesn't at least ring a bell than I might suggest finding a different forum to go newb around in. And its okay to be a newbie, just be a good newbie and read a fukton before you come on this site and start cluttering it up with BS.
4. For the love of all that is holy and good in this world, if you are posting about a topic, use the thread that already ****ing exists. Why are there 13,457,598,568 GPS threads. We get it already. It doesn't ****ing work very well. I am not interested in yet another screenshot of you GPS working or not working. Keep that **** in a single thread for those of you all that like that **** for whatever reason and let the rest of us who don't enjoy the GPS screenshot porn go about the rest of our reading. Are you all aware that there is a feature of this website where you can search and find similar topics? Do you not see the little suggestions when you start a new thread that are put there to avoid redundancy in threads? This goes as well for you tf-70005534 next model people and you wifi ppl whatever.
5. Lastly, I have a humble suggestion: the purpose of this lovely forum as I understand it is much like the forum in ancient Greece: for the free flow of useful information and to offer help and support to our fellow citizens prime. SO IF YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING INFORMATIVE OR HELPFUL GTFO.
/ rant off
I just couldn't stand it anymore. I can hardly stand to enter the general discussion forum anymore.

Actually the forum owners realize that the forum itself has branched out far beyond simple development talk. There are reasons that there is a General, Q&A, Dev, and more for each device. People have questions, concerns, interest in accessories, things that are not appropriate for a strictly development forum. Thus the other subforums.
I you want enforced dev talk only, go to the dev forum. It's policed and threads are killed off that are not on topic.
On the flip side, there are a ton of whiners and complainers and those who complain about them.

In general I agree with the op. Could he have used a little less profanity? Of course, but that really isn't the point. The fact that a thread like this even has to exist says that something is hugely wrong with this section. And all you guys wonder why users and devs alike leave this site for less hostile forums. The same thing happened in the thunderbolt forum. The device was hyped beyond belief prior to launch, and when it was finally released it was plagued with problems, the abysmal battery life being the most *****ed about. The entire section filled up with battery threads and things got out of control. People got hostile and overly defensive and the trolls came out of the woodwork. The result was several of the main devs leaving for another site. Things have settled down in the tbolt section since and some of those devs have returned, but none of his happened until the trolls got bored and moved on to another device to ***** about. The same thing will happen with the prime. Eventually there will be new tablets to complain about and this section will be left to those who actually own a prime. Eventually we will be able to use this section as a hotbed of information on how to improve our devices, but until then this section seems to have turned into a dumping zone for GPS threads and people complaining and demanding things. It's quite sad really. I sure how we can come out of this ahead because the way things are going now isn't helping anyone.

You all realize this is a commerce site, right? It's not a public service. The owner has a ton of costs in keeping the site up and offsets those costs (and hopefully makes a profit) through advertising. Therefore, the more users the better. Anyone's welcome to create a new site with different ToU if XDA's no longer meeting their needs. Good luck trying to pay for it and attracting the volume of devs and smart people that contribute to XDA.
XDA has grown over the years and is now the largest and most visited site for mobile technology discussion. It's quoted frequently in the press and, as proven by this very forum, helps hold manufacturers accountable (GPS expose, bootloader unlock). The general section is just that and with XDA coming up at the top of a Google search for newbies looking for answers it's going to become more and more mainstream. And as nice as it would be to discuss an issue once and bury it, each day that new people buy a device they are going to keep resurrecting the issue until it's resolved. Hopefully they'll do a search first.
There's a simple way to have a clean and happy front page. Manufacturers should release products that are finished when they're launched and work the way they're supposed to. That applies to everyone, not just Asus.

+1 for OP message, I agree.
-1 for delivery.
I have to chuckle a little bit. The OP has, what, 78 posts? Kind of a newb himself... This is the place where people come to learn, you are not expected to know everything, hence the questions. Some are lame but they are always answered one way or the other. I love this site, I learn everyday.

Nook Color/Tablet "extended USB" pinout?

Nook Tablet is known to have "extended USB" connector with bunch of extra pins in addition to standard microUSB's 5, and it seems it is the same (at least mechanically) as on Nook Color. Unfortunately, I wasn't able more specific information about the connect than this thread, and Novaports teardown picture which clearly (well, blurily) shows 17 pins, half of them apparently connected to something more interesting than power and ground.
So, is there updated information on this matter? I know folks here made hardware mods while cracking open the Tablet, so I don't believe it could escape their scrutiny. I don't suppose there's UART in there, but well, who knows, maybe charging LED is controlled by full-fledged GPIO for example ;-)

I agree about putting it in the right forum, but this could lead to some interesting development. I would like to know what the pinout is as well. I tried finding out what the pinout was for the evo shift some time back. I had an idea for a dock/case combo that would allow full use of the physical keyboard as well as docking inside a vehicle. I had no luck with finding the pinout, so that idea went into the scrap pile.
I hope a mod simply moves this to the right thread instead of locking or deleting it.

This. It's starting to get annoying with all of these "mods" that aren't actually mods.
I'm sorry if this was wrong place to post this, but this is indeed more of a development question, not a random newbie's one. I did my homework, but didn't find anything regarding Nook Tablet, so figured this is a worthy topic for device enablement, and I collected initial information and links to objective info in the first message.
My second idea was to catch attention of AdamOutler and other experienced developers.
Again, I'm sorry if with all this motivation it was still wrong to post here. And I understand the mods - XDA-Developers is a huge place, so without keeping it organized it would be havoc. But I hope there's difference between "How do I install Angry Birds?"/"How to replace back cover?" and "Let's collect all info on specific device enablement feature in one visible and easily found thread in the forum where interested people will likely look for it".
Just because it can lead to development doesn't mean it is. You can always ask a MOD to move it when it is appropriate.
If you don't like people stating the rules and asking you to follow them, then I would advise you follow them. You don't have to be a mod to ask people to do so.
There is a Q&A section now that is for people's questions.

The development section is not for questions, even if they are Dev related. Please post in the Q&A section. It is not my job to move threads around, you should post in the correct section.
Please dont get into a argument over the legitimacy of a threads location. Just use the report button and a moderator will act accordingly
