[Q] Need Help! Questions before opening Prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Ok so I was lucky enough yesterday to call a local Gamestop and they had a Transformer Prime. So they held it for me and I went on my lunch break and bought it. Gamestop also said they won't return it if its opened.
My wife may kill me because I have the original transformer and had nothing but problems with it, so I figured I would wrap it up and put it under the tree from Santa!
My question is - Is there any reason I shouldn't open it and take it back?
Is the sound ok now that it only has one speaker?
I think the problem with the Original Transformer is I got it on the first day, so maybe the build wasn't as good as a newer one.

Shadowgun and Riptide both look absolutely incredible for mobile games. Think of great PS2 graphics. Those are the only 2 I've tried so far, and the only ones optimized for Tegra 3. Monster Madness is decent from what I've seen, Sonic CD is a classic. I've played Cordy very little, but I'm pretty sure it's free anyways.

Shadowgun Tegra3 version is better looking than any ps2 game that ever came out. its more like inbetween a great xbox game(xbox was more powerful an ps2) and a Ps3. I believe future games for tegra3 can easily be on ps3 status, graphics wise. developer even said itll be easy to do complete ports of PC games no loss in quality/graphics. some already use the exact same grphics in tegra3 as they use in Pc. some dev. Develope currently for both formats or more. link to info found in Either my superchip showdown thread or another stating what developers are saying/ thinkin about the prime and tegra3.

I'm so nervous about opening the Prime. I also ordered one from Best Buy, but I don't think Best Buy will really ship them. I like Best Buy's return policy better because it's 45 days no questions asked and no restocking fee.
If I open the one from Gamestop if anythings wrong they will only exchange it. I feel like Best Buy would be better to deal with.

I must have been the only one on the planet that lucked out. My Prime works flawlessly. No problems with wifi, tethering, GPS, etc. I have zero problems with the dock also. Battery life is amazing! I must have gotten the "Golden ticket"

Well, welcome! I loved the Prime, and found the vibrator issue to be very minor while I waited a month for Amazon to get me another... Absolutely HATED the original Galaxy S (Vibrant), but the SII looks pretty nice... Not sure I can shy back away from HTC at this point though, lol
Ordered mine on Christmas night from BB.com. Received it on the 27th. Got the dock from the same place about 2 weeks later. love them both.
Galaxy s2 is hands down the best phone i have ever had. It is rooted and is as smooth as silk. I consistantly get quadrant scores over 5000

mine is also amazing. Slight backlight bleed which is only noticeable at boot us the only thing i have to complain about, and thats only coz i was looking out for it.
Battery life is amazing, speed is amazing, screen is amazing, dock is amazing. U was charging my gnex using a usb cable plugged into the dock! Flipping awesome! I discover more and more new stuff to do with this thing every day! Gonna try a ps3 controller in it next.
The only way to actually test the GPS is to completely disable wifi. Google uses all wifi networks in range to find a location. Google has mapped almost every wifi-network on the planet, and even if you just disconnect from your own, it will still use the wifi names around you to find location, even if you arent connected. So to test GPS, disable wifi completely. Then we will see...

Not even you, or people with similar posts 'got a good one'.. you and people like you just have a VERY high threshold for putting up with garbage.. on side by side tests your tablet will be the same as what others call 'broken'...
One man's 'fine' is another man's 'broken'.
Those of us who won't put up with shoddy crap, KNOW how broken the TFP is.. people who say it's fine are just trying to justify their purchase to themselves.. no-one likes to think they have been screwed, but there are some who will go to unreasonable lengths to convince themselves and everyone else that 'their's is fine'.. when it certainly isn't.
How any times have you read a post saying, 'yeah, well that's broken, and that doesn't work very well, and that's not up to scratch'.. then finish the post, I loooove Asus... that's not a reasonable action for a person to take.. that's pure self deception.
Install this, disable Wi-Fi, run the program and post a screenshot when you get a fix.

Really like the positive vibe you bring over here..
For what it's worth the Transformer Prime is usable, it just has a few drawbacks.
and you're only going to find them once you heavily began to use some of it's components that has those defects.
but they can go unnoticed if you're a light end user.
Come to think of it, this across the board on any electronic device. oh well. I still think this keyboard dock sort of stinks at times.
Although it's typing quite normal right now as I make this post. No random type cursor jumps.
I'm already on my third unit and this one again has massive screen bleed, creaking screen and stuck pixels I wish I had a golden ticket aswell.
aren't the screen bleeds common because the device uses the cheaper "Edge LED" LCD, vs the more expensive "Backlit LED" LCD? or am I thinking of ghosting.
I'm not much of a screen guru so I think I'm my own light user case as far as detecting any screen problems. So right now, I feel like I have a golden ticket as far as that category goes.

I don't feel like im putting up with garbage or trying to justify my purchase. I've used it for a week now and I still have another week until BestBuy won't let me return it for full price. So how broken is the TFP? As far as I am concerned, GPS is the only known issue.
In my opinion, tablets are not laptop replacement yet, maybe in the future but not yet. When tablets have 500GB or more of storage, 1GB or more of dedicated video card, 4 GB or more of RAM and a Core I5 or better of CPU then you can talk about heavy use. In the meantime they are for light use.
So I guess I'm lucky too. In my case I don't have any of the mentioned problems. I don't know about the GPS because really I don't use it. I had the Galaxy 10.1 and never used the GPS neither, for that I use my SGSII. I sold the Galaxy 10.1 and bought the TP and after a week of using the TP I'm very happy.

IMO tablets are no different than laptops and desktop computers, there's high and lows on specs in both areas. I think the Transformer Prime with it's pricing and size would fall into the mid-tier range tablet.
the higher end tablets often 12" or larger are much more comparable to laptops. While the Prime is more like a netbook.
Samsung Series 7 Slate
HP TouchSmart Tm2T
ASUS Eee Slate EP121
IBM ThinkPad X220
DELL Latitude XT3
and those tablets aren't doing so well since they cost too much, their Windows OS is not touch optimized like Android/iOS and they offer abysmal battery life, because there hardware is not energy efficient as the mobile CPUs in Android/iOS tablets.
But most of my gripes with the TFP are software related at best, I just think the default browser and the options ICS have on the Prime for the keyboad dock could be better, and the browser interface could be much more optimized had it been designed better. This is not a harp on the hardware, but more a harp on the software.
Now I'm actually hoping ASUS will offer an optional Windows 8 upgrade for it's tablets when Microsoft finally get their act together and produce Tegra 3 based Windows 8.
Coming from an iPad 2, the Transformer Prime has exceeded my expectations for a tablet. Get a gps lock, wifi works fine...great experience. Couldn't be happier.

Getting either a transformer or a transformer prime soon? Not really! :(

So I've been patiently waiting for income tax money to get a new tablet, been reading a lot between the tf101 and the tf201 and I want a tablet that will have good development, I know the prime is too new and it has his fair share of issues including wifi and GPS, I can care less about GPS but I need wifi so as long as I can get a decent wifi signal so I can seat in my couch or my bed and pickup my wifi I'll be good, now the light bleeding from what the videos I've seen on YouTube wouldn't be a big problem but I don't know if I would be able to deal with dead pixels, now to my question , is there anyone that upgraded to the prime from the transformer and do you feel like it was a mayor upgrade or do you think the original is still a mayor contender? Is a $100 difference so is not that much of a difference in price, but from reading how Asus might have released it prematurely makes me wonder if I should go for the older more stable with more development transformer tf101.

The Tegra 2 in the original is ancient. Considering how fast the mobile market moves, it is like buying a Pentium 4 for a new desktop. The Tegra 3 is three times as fast between the CPU/GPU- ready for 2012.
With that said, with a Prime you go in expecting to deal with a dead GPS and weak wifi range. It is the trade-off for a modern amount of power.
My only personal issue was slower wifi in my bedroom (the edge of my network), but I love my Prime so much my solution was just to upgrade my router (Cisco e4200, best 2.4GHz consumer router on the market). Now it works great.

I'd say the OG TF101 has much faster WiFi speed as range from the access point increases, the Prime is thinner and lighter, and can be purchased with higher storage capacity.
If WiFi speed is the most important get a OG. If GPS is the most important get neither IMHO but def' not the Prime.
I would personally say getting a Tegra 2 now, would be like getting a Core 2 Duo instead of an Core i[357]. Now the Wayne and Grey based Tegra chips expected later this year....those will make a Tegra 2 look like a Pentium 4 versus an i7, if wikipedia is to be believed.

I see what your saying, and I don't care about GPS, I just want to make sure I get a somewhat solid tablet, as long as I can get wifi from like 5 feet from my router in my living room I won't complain, and I guess the other issues with light bleed and dead pixels is all luck, and there's rooting and recovery here for it, wish there was some custom honeycomb roms to play with like the revolver or krakd roms for the tf101, hopefully we'll see some development picking up for the prime soon, gonna see about swinging by best buy and testing one out while I wait for my tax money so I can just go buy the one I decide to go for when the money comes.

While some say GPS is no big deal, look at the amount of whining about it. I want it for alot of reasons. It automatically updates weather to the location, etc.
I purchased mine Less than two weeks ago from Best Buy. I have NO GPS at all. mine is a BCOKAS134452 serial number. My wifi isnt that bad actualy but i feel it is lacking when compared to my rooted nook color. I will try to open mine tonight and make one mod to see if it improves, if not, it goes back tomorrow.
Im not going to exchange it. Im going to return it receive my FULL refund. Then Re-purchase another unit so i have ANOTHER 2 weeks, incase there are issues.
While some may not find this right. I have noticed some people have major issues 3 or 4 weeks after purchase. That is what worries me. Just my .02$
Now you know about some of the issues affecting some users. Now check out the link in my signature. The positive transformer thread. That'll put things into perspective. GPS is a widespread issue although some peoples do work. As far as wifi, this a very limited issue. Just check out the link n the vast number of different users posted in there n you will see a flipside. Which is what I'm on..lol wifi works great on mines

IMHO light bleed and dead pixels are a quality control and shipping issue. It's also the most common ground for trouble between both tablets.
One thing that alarmed me... while my TF101 fresh out of Microcenter was great: my Prime off eBay had a batch of wtfixels on the far left side and I was afraid that I may have to RMA. By the time I completed the initial setup stuff with my Google Account it went away and the pixels are fine in use.
I do consider the TF101 a better quality tablet but really, unless you do have hair pulling issues with wifi/gps, Prime is fine. I also think the sites more or less calling the Prime like the top or the most powerful tablet of the year are also correct enough. It just doesn't have a deluded cult preaching it's perfection.

Go for tf-201
So I'm still waiting for my tax money that should be here by the end of this week, by now I'm disappointed to say no prime for me, I've spend lots of time in the background here just reading negative posts and searching online and reading about rumors of discontinuation of the prime, whether is true or not, I think I'm gonna be patient and wait a bit to see what happens in the next couple of months, Acer is said to be the next one to have a tegra3 tablet, who knows who else throws one out next, and hopefully the tf700 doesn't take too long, oh well as much as is killing me to buy a tablet, I don't want to go backwards to the tf101 to feel I got a solid tablet, I want to feel about a tablet like I feel about my HTC hd2 , that is a solid device. I guess well see.

Here's the thing bro....while you're waiting, buy a prime to play with. Most likely you will love it and keep it but guess what if you don't like it you can just return it like so many people have or are at least threatening to. At least you have something to do while you wait. That's my opinion but instead of the buzz kill threads just man up and go buy one see how great it is.

I read an article stating that less than 5% of extended warranties are ever used. Something to think about.
GPS is NOT a feature of the Transformer Prime. Anyone who brings it up anymore are doing so because it was a feature, but they bring it up because it was then removed. You don't buy a tablet for gps, you buy a gps. The GPS module and antenna are crap in the Prime. You would crap get signal and accuracy even if it did work properly.
For example, you don't buy a PS3 anymore for the ability to install Linux or PS2 backwards compatibility. Why? They removed those features.
Thee major problem of the weak wifi is the fact that one of the antennas is not actually connected properly in some of the old and new Primes. This is a reason to not buy the Prime.

That's why I said in OP that I could care less about GPS working, but wifi is a big thing for me.
My money came into my account yesterday, not sure but I might pick one up from best buy, play with it and decide what to do before the 14 day return period ends.

Transformer Prime for a non-gamer?

Heres the deal, i already own a Transformer Prime & love it. My GF is due for a tablet upgrade. I am debating on getting her a Prime & a dock. The versatility is great with the Prime & i think she would enjoy it. However.... She is not gonna play any 3D games to prob take advantage of the Tegra 3. But she does like to play old school NES games on my Prime from time to time, does that rhyme? Lol.
Now do you think its worth the $650 for the Prime and the dock for her? Basically she wants something that is fast on web browsing and a smooth UI "ice cream sandwhich". And like me she enjoy's latest and greatest.
Or should i just get her something like a iPad 3. Now Apple makes great products but just too closed source for me and i get very bored with them. I am not sure which way to go. I mean with the iPad i would save $150. I am a firm believer that if you get the Prime the docks is a must! To take full advantage of how its intended to be used.
Best buy has the galaxy tab 10.1 for $399. But the extra $100 seems like a logical upgrade for the Prime or iPad 3 for her. The upside for me if i got her a iPad 3 i would gain a super awesome direct TV remote and guide that is on the itunes store. Not sure why Android market has not gotten this yet.
Thoughts?
How much does your g/f care?
I know plenty of girls that would blow me for a Kindle Fire. None of them even know what a Prime is.
prime has best value and versatility out of any tablet with the dock combo. nothing else compares. plus the extra battery life added is priceless. it all depends on how much you want to spend. if you want something lower priced, might as well go with an OG transformer n dock. if you want the extra power that can be used at will, go with the prime. if you want something with very limited features, simple to use, and closed ecosystem, then ipad3 is what you want.

Lol tha's hilarious. Basically she cares enough that she lets me buy all my expensive gadgets. So she likes to feel like she has a good device for the most part. Plus she likes me to Root/rom & all that good stuff for her too.

prime has best value and versatility out of any tablet with the dock combo. nothing else compares. plus the extra battery life added is priceless. it all depends on how much you want to spend. if you want something lower priced, might as well go with an OG transformer n dock. if you want the extra power that can be used at will, go with the prime. if you want something with very limited features, simple to use, and closed ecosystem, then ipad3 is what you want.

I think i am gonna go with the Prime for her. I already have a dock for mine so we can obviously share. I don't always have mine docked and i am sure for the most part she will use her's without the dock. So its a win win & save the extra $150.

That would be my recommendation. No leading edge tablet is going to cost less than $500 so you might as well get here a Prime if you want to stay with Android. Since she doesn't have a dock now, I would want on buying her one until she decides she really needs one and like you have said you can always share.
However. If you can wait a few months to get her a new tablet. You could upgrade yourself to the Transformer Pad Infinity (TF700, or whatever they are calling it these days) and give your GF your "old" Prime. You could also give her your dock since I don't think the Infinity is compatible with the Prime's dock.
If you don't want to spend that much money, and can still wait a few months, you could get the Transformer Pad (TP300), which is a slightly (very slightly) scaled back TF Prime intended to replace the TF101 as the budget tablet offering. These will start @$400 for the 16GB model and will have a plastic back so GPS and WiFi should be improved over those built into the Prime.
Ummmm, The DirectTV remote is on the Market. I use it all the time.........
Dude i wanna be your girlfriend

I'd say enough to get her a TP, which to me and others is the best
This ISN'T my Transformer Prime
should be plenty of other things that can be useful with the prime's power other than just games.

I love it, I don't really play games but I love knowing I have the power if I need it....I don't have a dock yet but I don't need it right now....it's one of the best devices I have ever owned

You could get her the TF101 with dock for only $50 than the TF201 (Prime) without dock.
If she's not going to do a lot of gaming and stuff this would most likely be more than enough.. still completely blows away the iPad 2 IMO.
You can check Craigslist too.. there are some people selling the TF101 WITH dock for about $400 in my area.

Most fun thing to do on the prime

So, what is *the* most fun thing to do on the prime?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium HD app
Nothing now, I had to turn my Prime over to the wife as hers is going back to ASUS for a RMA;(.........
It's gotta be plugging my prime into the third party chassis that turns it into a great multitrack recorder with options for dynamic and condensor microphones, multiple instrument inputs and amp and stompbox models.
Oh, wait...no...
It's playing "Order and Chaos"
Oh, wait...no...
It's loading up the textbooks and presentations that I need for my nursing degree and highlighting, annotating and printin....
Oh, wait...no...
It's got to be the panorama mode on the camera - that is actually pretty cool.
and I enjoy Crackle, Onlive Desk for access to Office 2010, Mint for personal financials and square for taking credit card payments.
Hmm. it's true I do like those but they are not my favorite - really good uses though.
Ah! here we go -
Sketchbook Pro except for the wobbly diagonal lines is truly excellent.
Osmosis HD is addictive and beautiful.
Quell Reflect is nearly as addictive and beautiful.
Photoshop Touch is excellent.
Shadowgun THD is pretty sweet.

I agree. In the multiple forums on XDA this is the only one I have been in that has a ton of non and ex owners just hanging around in it that aren't even developers on the device. Seriously, wtf!
Oh, my favorite thing to do with it is kick back on the couch and browse xda

Back on Topic,
Splashtop THD for sure at home and work,
Galaxy on Fire 2....(have always loved that game) now on the big screen
The look after setting up Hubs...
The sheer speed of my device....
The jealousy in my ipad loving co-workers eye's when they see me remove the prime from the keyboard doc.
The complete discussed look my icrap loving coworkers face when they find out how much storage I have on my prime......
Exploring all the features for the first time, just got her today, had to search half the bay area. No one has them in stock, best buy said a month before they can even special order them. Loving it so far.

Starting scummvm and playing day of the tentacle, a game when played for the first time almost brought my pc to it's knees and now I can play it on a freaking tablet...
Reading magazines for less money then it would cost me to buy them as the paper version.
Instead of going through 3 1000+ pages of manuals on the job to find the exact working of one button or procedure, I click search in a PDF reader..
Bottom line, a/my tablet does not replace anything but makes life more simple/enjoyable.

And you gotta love the look on peoples faces when you take out the prime in the dock. They look at it - "hm macbook air..? ... no. Ah its gotta be one of those netbooks!"
But then you rip off the screen and they go WTF!? <3
Honestly you guys show no appreciation for the person who got you the unlocked bootloader! Just because I returned it and had fun ripping off asus...
He did ask the most fun thing to do on the prime... I was not the first to say return it I just elaborated opentoe said return it also

Updates to continue?

Hey everyone, my prime will be delivered tomorrow and I am extremely excited, but after being on the forums and hearing about the new tablets asus will be announcing I began to worry about my investment.
I'm beginning to worry about whether the prime will continue having steady upgrades and ultimately a jump to the next android OS. What do you all think?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
yes it will continue to be sold and supported. we actually have an update that should be coming between now and next week sometime(i hope what i was told holds true). Asus has the best firmware support when it comes to updates n such. so there should be no worries on that part. plus with developer support here in xda, you in good hands.
I honestly don't want to think anything as that would be spreading rumors.
However, if the TF300T and maybe TF700T firmwares will be mostly compatible with the TF201, then there shouldn't be any problem.
The TF101 is still very well supported by Asus. In my opinion, Asus provides hands down the best, and most timely, ongoing support. They're awesome in that regard.
PS - my Prime and dock was delivered today and is waiting at my house. Really excited!!

All you have to do is take a look at what is happening with the original Transformer which has been out for over a year now. The Prime was released several months ago yet the 1st gen is still getting updates (including ICS). So you shouldn't really be worried about this at all. Like others have said ASUS is really good about keeping their products up to date as far as software goes.

ah hah..lol its a stud then? told you
Sorry OP, we're going off topic here, but my 30 minute impression after owning the Prime...
Hardware-wise, this thing exudes quality in a way the 1st gen Transformer could never dream of. Really, really awesome. Keyboard and trackpad are substantially improved as well. Device performance is definitely making a good first impression.
Super happy so far. After jumping on the original Transformer at launch, I was thinking I'd skip the Prime and wait for the next generation. Well, I guess I got bored. Plus I was really in love with the Prime's style in a way that the upcoming 700 couldn't quite match. Went with the Champagne by the way, not as big a fan of the amethyst or whatever it's called, which I looked at in a local Best Buy.
I've got a firmware update pestering me but I'm going to hold off until I do a bit more reading on the current situation. I understand the latest firmware isn't rootable, and I'm not yet sure I'm ready to void my warranty with the Asus unlock.
Anyway, glad to be aboard!
Total stud so far, thanks for the encouragement to go for it! I even had gps lock in the house! We have 2 wifi routers, so I can't imagine a wifi problem. Will venture to the yard tomorrow and see how far I can get. Gotta figure out what else to try on it. Pinball was fun :-D ohhh, and the screen is amazing. I'll be able to read at park and waiting for kids ball this summer with no problem. I need sunglasses for the super ips+!

Totally agree about the screen. In addition to brightness, I'd say the TF201 has a bit of an advantage in clarity and contrast over the TF101 as well - which I consider to have a very good screen. I was always really impressed with the TF101's screen, even compared with my Galaxy Nexus which blows it out of the water in terms of pixel density, black levels, and color saturation.
This is fun!
