[Q] How to wirelessly transfer large files to android? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've found Awesome Drop and wondering if there is anything else like it. Or like Google Music for that matter. Maybe Dropbox?
What I want is this:
Im away from my home computer and want to transfer a 175mb .avi from it to my phone wirelessly. not with bluetooth or wifi, but over 3g or 4g. If I try to stream it teamviewer or logmein its impossible. Is there a better way than, from my phone, log into to teamviewer, locate and place the .avi in my dropbox. wait an hour or two and then download it from my dropbox on my phone to my sd card?

I doubt theres a much faster way unless you want to install an FTP or torrent client on your phone and download directly to phone. I use aDownloader for torrents and ES Explorer for FTP. For streaming music I use Audiogalaxy. I'm sure google music would work too though Ive never tried it.

Dropbox works without issue for me.

Get crazy remote (available in market). The frame rate is much faster than logmein. I have both installed.

I use file expert, and the it's FTP server option, then with filezilla you can download or upload files

Best way to transer movies

Is there any hope for me to transfer my MKV files from my NAS to my Gtab and just have it work? The files hare h.264 720p or 1080p.
I've read a lot and it seems like a PITA, if at all possible. I'm on a MAC, so I can't just drag and drop.
The MAC Kies software is not taking the files, either straight to the tab or to the library.
I have the wi-fi option of file transer, but at 4-5 gigs a movie that would take forever.
What about loading from the NAS to a hard drive or SD card, then loading on to the tab? Still sounds pretty time consuming, but at the same time more favorable as I can load up hard drive with several movies then transfer one or two at a time.
Will the tab, with the right movie player, play these files assuming I can get them onto the tab?
Amazing how you can read tons of threads that only lead to more confusion then all of a sudden you find the mother load of information and it all makes sense.
I'm currently transferring a 7 GB MKV movie via wi-fi using Cyberduck and file expert. About a 1/2 hour process I estimate. This might be taking a bit longer since I'm pulling the 7gb movie from my NAS, but I am connected with CAT6 at 1gb/s so who knows.
I've downloaded Diceplayer and am also going to download Vplayer and test them both with high action movies.
All my movies are MKV for my NAS and wireless streaming to my home TVs purpose. All are 4-7 GB in size.
I don't have the USB host adapter yet. You think I can use an external hard drive or SD card and play the movies directly from that source without any issue?
You'll find that stuff encoded above about 5-6Mbps (more importantly, anything that peaks around 15Mbps) will stutter on playback during the high nitrate scenes with any player. This is unfortunately a result of the Tegra chip and can't be fixed. With that said, you're also going to have trouble with anything above 720p unless it's encoded using baseline profile or with a really high quantizer.
As far as file transfers are concerned, you can use any number of wireless solutions to get the job done, but wired ones are few and far between. You can transfer using DDMS if you have the Android SDK installed, but it's not very intuitive and kind of slow. I recompiled the library that the 'Android File Transfer' uses to include support for the Galaxy Tab, but Google has obviously made some modifications because the program doesn't like my compiled version.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get the Android File Transfer app working as I think that is the best long term solution to our problem.

Thanks for the info.
I'm not sure of the details of the movie encoding. Just know it's a .H264 in a MKV and is 7GB in size.
I used Diceplayer and watched a couple different spots in the move HEAT with no issues.
Transfer speed, when I looked, was 2.9 Mbs. A USB card reader attached to the dock port will still be much, much faster.
Let us know if you figure out the file transer app, as it would be nice to not have to transfer from NAS to SD then to Tab.

Since heat is so ****ing long I'd imagine that 7GB is just about right in terms of size/quality ratio.
If your NAS is running an SMB server then you can use something like ES File Explorer on the tablet to connect directly to it and copy from there. I've found the transfer speeds to be acceptable and definitely less work than what you're putting up with right now.

It's a WD 1 tb-- not sure if it's running an SMB server. Without too much explanation, what is an SMB server?

Windows Share.
I imagine it is, as that's probably how you access it from your Mac. Try ES File Explorer and see if that works for you.

The NAS shows up on my MAC as a drive over the WI FI network or in my case a cat6 cable.
I'll try the ES file if it will speed up the transfers..

So I've tried the ES File Explorer and transferred a file directly from the NAS.
A couple things I was wondering about.
Is this supposed to be faster than using FTP file explorer? I was getting 3.0 MB/second, not Mbs, MB.
I don't know what I'm getting using the ES file explorer because there is no status bar that tells me what I'm getting. I'm currently timing the 7 GB file using ES F. Explorer.
There is a little download icon in the task bar- it seems buggy to me. Have you experienced this?
Am I missing anything here?
At this point the only advantage I see using this method over FTP is I don't have to be next to my computer to get things started.

It's always worked really well on my phone, but I actually rarely use it with the tablet so I can't tell you much. I know that it's fast enough to stream movies (which it does well) but as to overall speed I can't help.
As far as progress, I've always had it show me a progress bar in the notification pane. Never had any problems with it.
If it doesn't work for you, then it's no skin off my back

DLNA outside of Gallery App

I am able to show photos and videos on my computer through the Gallery App. But Gallery doesn't see a lot of my video files. I use MX Video Player to view movies but it doesn't support DLNA. Anyone know of a way or another video player that can use DLNA and play onto a computer? I have an HTPC setup and don't want to move files around.
I know I can connect my phone as a drive but I'd rather not have to connect any wires. I've tried Sambra file sharing but that needs root and the temp roots don't play nice with it.
Imediashare on the market works with my ps3. You just have to put the files in the proper location on the phone.....

Thanks for the suggestion but it's not working for me. My phone can't see my computer, and my computer can't see my phone. There must be something I am missing in the app. I know my computer is set correctly because I can stream from Gallery, but the app just refuses to see it.
I will play with it a little, and get back to you. Also, you might powercycle your modem, just a suggestion.

my phone CAN'T see my pc either. it sees my PS3, though, but never the PC, which is really annoying because DLNA works for everything else. PS3 sees the PC fine, too.
I use twonky and imedia share.

File Transfer Problems

So, I've been using Bridge for Mac to try and transfer music, photos and video and it's absolutely horrible. Apparently this isn't a big deal in windows, but for macs it's trouble...
Takes forever to transfer even the smallest of things and constantly hangs and freezes up. It's taken me 15 or so connections to transfer over just a couple of gigs of music and I can't transfer a movie of any real size because of this.
Is there any other way to transfer things back and forth besides using BT?
Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated.
btw - yes, I've searched the forums, but no real solutions have been proposed for mac users.
Interested to, have thé same problem. Well its Android so ftp or Airdroid will do but...
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk
you can use double twist player for XPS and double twist for mac, but you are going to need double twist air sync. so you can now create playlists and sync your music and videos
the interface is kinda itunes so its ease to use..
Ever since I've started using Airdroid, I've very very rarely connected my phone to transfer files. I suggest you give Airdroid a shot.

using airdroid too but when you try to transfer music syncs twice so you have two same file
same issue here. I had 442 songs. It hung on two songs. I disconnected the phone and then unclicked the song it hung on and then started the sync again. I got the rest of the songs done. As for videos... I drag videos from itunes to my desktop. In Bridge for Mac I go to browse files and then drag the video from my desktop to the 'video' folder on my phone. This seems to work.
I've also tried the file transfer portion of Bridge, but it constantly hangs and never finishes.
I'll give Airdroid a shot, but to have to use a 3rd party app is really terrible.

Best way to Copy HD Video to Android?

I hope I posted this question in the right place. I have searched extensively and I could not find a specific solution.
I am wondering how you all get your HD video files to your Android device. I have a library of 720p MP4 (x264/AAC) videos on optical discs (CD/DVD). The files are 1-4GB each. I'd like to casually select a video and watch it on my Galaxy Nexus. Unfortunately, I haven't found a good way to do this. The phone is certainly capable of playing the videos smoothly and at full 720p resolution. However, it's getting the files to the device in a timely fashion that's the problem. Here's what I've tried so far:
I can load a disc into my desktop, copy the files to a local fileserver, and then transfer to my phone using SFTP or Samba/CIFS. The phone's wifi speed seems to cap out at about 1MB/sec on my 802.11n network so it would take 30 minutes to transfer one file! The phone's storage would fill up quickly too, but I could always delete old ones after I watch them. With such a slow transfer, I'd really have to plan in advance - not to mention the multiple steps to copy from disc to desktop to server to phone. I have tried several different apps and protocols. All seem to cap out at about 10Mbit/sec while a laptop gets 50-60Mbit/sec easy. My previous Android devices from different brands also had this limit so perhaps it's all that's supported by those tiny radios?
I prefer to use Linux on the desktop but there don't seem to be good solutions for MTP and PTP transfers under Linux.
I booted into a Windows machine, put a disc in the drive and attempted to copy to the device via USB 2.0. It was a bit quicker, but I was only able to get 2-4MB/sec so copying a handful of movies all at once takes over an hour - and I'm constantly interrupting my workflow rebooting into different operating systems.
I've considered getting a USB OTG cable so that I could plug an external (self-powered) DVD drive into the phone. However, I haven't found a definitive answer on whether or not generic USB DVD drives are supported via USB Host. Most seem to think they are not.
I'd remove an SD card and use a USB card reader on my desktop, but the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have one.
It would be nice to stream the movies from my network file server, but I haven't found a good solution for that either. Most of the file browsing apps that claim to support streaming actually copy files locally temporarily instead of reading them incrementally from the server. Since I run Linux, I don't have the capability of running those specialized Windows apps that simulate streaming from the desktop. I could root the phone and manually mount network drives, but the management of that doesn't seem elegant given I'm not always in range of my home network and I'd also like to take some with me on the go.
Once the movies are on the phone, they play great and I have no problems. It's just quite a challenge to get them there in a reasonable timeframe without headaches. How do those of you who watch HD movies on your phones handle this? Any suggestions? Thanks!
just google plex for linux and see if that works for you and theres an app for android as well not certain if this helps but I use plex everywhere.
I appreciate the suggestion, but I already have a fileserver set up. I don't see how plex would overcome any speed limitations, which is really the issue.
I use mediahouse upnp dlna app (free) to stream hd movies from a wirelessly connected hard drive.
You could also stream from a pc if you set the pc as a dlna server.
Also you can sometimes stream using es file explorer.

I use Remote Potato Server on my computer, so I can use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tv.dyndns.piet5211.rempotatoclient on my Touchpad. When I stream video from the app it uses mVideoPlayer to open it.

For a decent DLNA server, check out TVersity (do a Google search).
BubbleUPnP from Play Store is a reasonable, free client.
Personally I just share a folder on my PC on my home network, then use ES file explorer to goto the folder and MX Player (which plays nearly everything) to stream to my Touchpad. That way I don't have to install anything on my PC.
You can also try Emit. Its pretty simple but it does use a lot of the remote PC's CPU.

++1 this is the way to go for sure. es file explorer and mxplayer for the win. you dont even need to create shares on the windows PC. just scan the LAN for the computer that you want to access files on, then enter the login username and password that you login to the windows machine with and voila, youll have access to everything on your PC.

I downloaded xbmc android from the pivos website but I didn't try network streaming. Otherwise it seemed pretty functional, if your interested I would try to find a link.

I use a variety of methods .
For xbmc have a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813089
The one I prefer is to mount my NAS directory onto the touchpad via "cifs manager" from the market and then I use Vplayer. No issues at all.

I do this with ES File Explorer, works great with the VLC nightly builds as well located here. If you've ever used VLC on a desktop it plays almost every format out there, and the mobile version does too. This is the real, on device version of VLC, not a streamer that relies on a desktop version of VLC to be running.

Install MX Player as per my original post and use that to play your video (just use ES File Explorer to select the video.)
When you select the file in ES Explorer you should get a pop up option to choose a player, like in the screen-shot below from my phone (lent my TP to my mum for a few weeks):

ok when you say "play from network" what do you mean exactly? are you talking about playing a video link from a website? or are you talking about from computer on another network, for example do you want to be able to access your videos on your home computer when you are away from home?
"Install MX Player as per my original post and use that to play your video (just use ES File Explorer to select the video.)"
k,, i'll try again... im having probs w/ other apps also.. there may be a connection between those probs and vid players not behaving..

playing movie files remotely
amkaos,
what you are trying to do requires 2 things, first for your movies to be accessible from outside your lan,
For this, there are a wide range of possibilities. You can use cloud storage, you can open ports on your router and gain access to a NAS device at home from outside, a VPN connection to your home machine, and few others I am sure.
The second thing you need is good connectivity, good download speed to your device and good upload speed from your home network if is where the files reside.
Once you have access to the files and good connectivity you should be able to open the files and play them on your device with most of the software that has been mentioned here.
I hope this helps.
idk how to get xbmc to stream from lan.
es player, mixed results of supporting formats..
couldnt get vlc player to work at all w/ lan
mx player pro wouldnt play atall from lan..
vplayer.. had place to type local ip.. but still wouldnt show the any of the shares on the pc..
would not play when selected from es file explorer..
xbmc ..
this looks very promising but i couldnt even to get it to show in the video choices in es file explorer.
i tried to use local lan ip address //192.168 etc..
smb://192.etc.. as shown in esfileexplorer..
beyond that i dont know how else to search..
i tried to use my actual ipaddy from whatsmyip.. no go there either
mixed results == not playing atall or wont stream, wants to copy entire file then play..
i am sure that part of the probs is that i dont really know how to properly search for the lan share..
vlc..wouldnt show up in esfileexplorer video choices ..
to stream, app wants me to install the player on pc.. im not willing to do that for now..so didnt try it..
thanx
