[Q] What I need to know to start building a custom rom? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Programming I need to know?, specific languages?. I own a Samsung Galaxy 551, and really like to help the development of custom roms. Thanks to the ones that answers my post.

Q... How to set up Linux dev environment

Ok I installed the jdk on 11.10 ubuntu. The installed eclipse from the software center. I'm currently installing the android sdk. All of the sdk. I'm assuming using eclipse I should install the adt plugin. I'm interested in developing an app. Any pointers would be awesome. If anyone has any links to read up on app development for newbs I would be grateful. I would like to build a ROM to, something for personal use. I would post it if I ever feel its worth it. I'm interested in learning development and i have some great ideas for apps that do not exist that could be decent money makers. Just gotta make the thing. As I already said any help or advice would be awesome. Links would be cool to read up on. And thanks in advance for anyone who helps.

find the thread with "dsixda rom kitchen"
When i use eclipse and go to /help/install new plugin and set it up with the links from the sdk webpage i get this error. It finds the adt plugin but then wont let me install it.
Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.

Missing requirement: Android Development Tools 15.0.0.v201110251216-213216 (com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.feature.group 15.0.0.v201110251216-213216) requires 'org.eclipse.wst.sse.core 0.0.0' but it could not be found
Hi mikedavis120,
Adding htt p: / SOMETHING /download.eclipse.o SOMETHING rg/releases/indigo (Indigo Repos) to your "Install Software"-List solves it.

CALLING DEVS : How do I Make my own rom?

Well seeing many developers at my age (15) It makes me want to be a developer myself .. One thing ; I don't know jack about android coding .. So I'm wondering where do I starT? What are the Minimum requirements to be a Dev? What tools Do I use ? I know that I might need a linux partition and I'm actually downloading UBUNTU Right now.. So If any Dev can point me into a direction of 'how to code for android' or something like that, that'd be awesome!

To properly develop a rom you will need A linux box (but a partition will work for some of it) Need to know c+ and java coding as well as being good with using linux.
What's a Kitchen Though?
I remember Using a online kitchen for my Galaxy Spica to make a Samdroid mod ... Is it like a easy making rom thingy?

The android kitchen is a way to make simple mods to a custom rom. IT will not do all the work for you to make a custom rom that is not just another modded rom. Do a search for android kitchen on XDA and read up on it. There is not simple way to make a rom. You can make a customized rom or translate a rom (MIUI) but neither of these is making a rom. If you trully want to make your own rom you will need to learn java and C+ coding

[Q] What is an Easy way To Develop Android Games/Apps

EDIT: How Can I Easily Make a Sidescrolling Platformer Using An Easy Scripting Language For Android

Im Really Eager to start Making Simple Platforming Games For Android
bump Someone please post
There is no easy way. Anything that is worth doing is always worth the work you need to do.
Here is a Java-Script Builder
Don't know if you know anything about writing script or anything but you can PM(private message) me with an email address and I'll send you a zipped attatchment with a program for windows pc. It's called Sencha-Touch 1.1.1 App Maker.
I'm sure if your running windows on your PC and your here then you already have java runtime. Just update it if necessary at Java.com. Just click where it says "Do I Have Java" to check and update your version.
You will probably also have to go to Oracle(the java website) and download and install the "Java SE 7u2" for developers from the download section.
If you Need direct links to the Java's, I will include them in email to you.
Hope this gives ya some insight.
Can't get the zip to upload to an email but can give ya the website link in one. Don't think I'm allowed to post outside links.

Have you tried out DaVinci Studio? it's a dev tool based on HTML5 and JavaScript...
You can get it for free at their website and ask questions on their forum if you need help with it.
Eclipse + Android SDK
I highly recommend using the standard Eclipse setup with the Android SDK. Java is pretty easy to learn, and can create games that are very simple to complex. I was confused where to start off as well, and tried out AndEngine. There isn't much documantation for AndEngine, so I followed Kilobolt's tutorial on game development. One of the best tutorials of programming that I have ever seen. I am working on a platformer at the moment, and everything is going pretty well. In simple, google "Kilobolt". He has tutorials for setting everything up. However, the tutorial begins with standard Java development, and Android comes into play when you are ready to port the game. Good Luck. :good:
Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

custom rom!!!

hello to everyone... is there any forum for noobies to ask for how to develop a custom ROM? I have download all the packages (SDK, ECLIPSE, JAVA, thats all i think) and i want to help u to improve or make my own custom ROM i dont know if this is the wright place to ask thank u for your time i have X10mini and i try every ROM in here and kernels
i try to google it or search in here but i havent linux pc or ubuntu so i will very thankfull if there is any guide for windows platform step by step which use eclipse and SDK
If you have no knowledge, you should forget about it. If you want to build from source you need to know how linux work and how to debug the most common errors. It's really hard to develop something original right now.
thank u for the reply... well... im not such interesting to built my rom as to improve an existing rom to working correctly... i try the sdk and eclipse but i dont unterstand many things maybe because im new in town... now im looking on cygwin and kitchen ... it seems more familiar and easy but is it for sony ericsson for example or im losing time... thank u for your time

Odin Python Version [Leaked ?]

I just found a Python Project which made by a guy from Samsung since 8 months ago. I cant think why dont anybody else know that which existed on GitHub. But it was built for Linux/Ubantu/Mac Platform and its written in Python 3.5 with wx Modules.. (GUI)
* I cant upload screenshots rightnow due to my mac issues in these days .. but trust me it WORKS
* I guess this guy, B. J Mun, aimed this as public sharing but anybody didnt mentioned .. may be
* If u want to test it on Windows, there is a implemented version by ME. I would upload it later
* This is for educational purposes only and just developers
* For those who asking me what is this, "This is just an alternative Odin Downloader for Samsung devices which written in Python and its for Linux Platform. You can know how the original Odin.exe worked with the Odin Protocol. And you can put it on yourself with the other programming languages such as C/C++/C#/Java.".
Take a look at pyodin.py .. thats based on Python Thread based class which included like transferring files/bytes when device is on the Download Mode. If you want to run it or compile it, u must install wxPython Modules with Python 3.5. type it on Terminal : python pyodin-gui.py
* Good luck
