+1 im on o2. why is it special for orange only?
i know 3 have quite a few tweaks..
Hey dude I spoke to orange about signal boost and they said it only works in black sgs2 and not the white 1 is this true?
Cheers
No idea regarding colour. Theres no chance of it working on other networks either, sorry guys!
Nathan
How exactly does this work?
As far as I'm aware this is only available to people who are on Orange and have Orange broadband with their router. Correct me if I'm wrong.
That's too bad.. Was hoping something to increase my signal boost for fast 3G and internet downloading for my carrier... But good work nevertheless..

Its a wifi calling app, not really a signal booster if you're outdoors.
I think this boosts your signal by using your broadband to make/receive calls. There is one network herein oz that does it. Would make sense to harness broadband to make/receive calls while your home. I have pretty bad mobile reception in my home. Using wifi would help that.

Its available to anyone on Orange regardless of ISP. It works by tunneling your voice calls/sms/mms through your broadband to Orange directly, so when ever you have wifi signal you'll have perfect(ish?) phone signal too! I've been using it and it works really well, my house was rubbish for signal before
Initially the house will go red, leave it for 30 seconds and it'll go green and then you'll notice that the radio turns off (shows zero bars of signal).

Someone please correct me...i am about 90 present sure Orange is the only uk provider to suppot UMA (signel thou internet)..
As for the rest of the world surly someone (i am to thick) could mod this for use with other providers around the world.

Would this work on Rogers?
Hey would those lib files work on Rogers wifi calling or are they specific to Orange? I have the Rogers version of the apk on my computer, but i need to find the appropriate lib files. These look to be just right, or not?
I have an international version of the I9100 and I need a signal boost due to poor tower placement in my area.
Cheers.
Tested this on my stock orange rom, found there was a lag during the call and quality was very poor. Has it improved at all lately?

Well the title says just about everything, but I'll tell you what I was running. I was running Jk6 (2.2) since it hit xda and all was working great but the last 3 days Ive been having issues I use wifi when I surf the wed at home so when I turn wifi off I get full bars no 3g/edge sign so I turn it on flight mode or pull the sim still nothing no 3g/edge sign. Also I live in a hspa area with great reception I've called tmo and they said my service is great in my area. I flashed back to JI6 with kies mini after doing a odin to stock with re-partition checked still no 3g/edge just full bars my wifi still works though anyone had any kind of issue like this, I don't think JK6 had anything to do with this but hell I don't know I got tmo sending me a new prob going to be a refurbished one. I can turn it on edge from settings and it will work on edge sometimes it does work on 3g if it shows a 3g sign sometimes it works and sometimes it just has a 3g sign and doesn't do anything.... any help would be great thx.
I'm not an expert, but I don't think it is possible to break your 3G radio the way you described.

Right sounds abit strange but basically at times I'll have no bars at all, but will still be able to make a call.
And other times it will show 3 bars but I won't be connected to the network.
The reception bars seem to have no relevance on whether I'm getting any network signal.
I'm using leomars rom, is it possibly a software issue.
Does anyone have anything similar?
I'd just like for the reception bars to be accurate, i.e if I have no reception then show no bars, and if I do then show bars
Thanks
edit I've attached a picture showing what I mean, it shows no bars but as you can see I've got a data connection so I must have signal.
hmm, i may have something similar...
when you say no bars, does that mean that they are greyed out as opposed to white bars... or no bars at all?

Sorry my fault, I didn't explain myself correctly.
Yes I mean greyed out, e.g no white bars. In the picture on my first post I've got no white bars so apparently no reception but I've got a 3g connection and can make calls.
And here is a picture showing that I have a few white bars (reception)
Yet I don't have any reception at all. No 3g, and can't make calls
It's so annoying, I've never had anything like this on any phone I've owned before.
When you have no signal at all, you'll get the circle icon thingy instead of bars. Bars all greyed out mean that you just about have a signal (an extremely weak one!) Go to Settings > About phone > Status and have a look at the signal strength details there

Ah ok so that I can deal with.
But what about when it shows a few white bars but then says I'm not connected to the network, so no data connection and unable to calls?
Signal shows -113 dBm 0asu (not sure if that's good or bad)

Could it be a problem with your carrier? Congestion at your local mast could easily cause this.

That's bad! Good signal is a small -dBm figure (so for example -99.dBm would be much better) and high asu.

Thanks for the explanation regarding how the signal figures work.
Going back to what you mention about having white bars and not being able to make calls being congestion. Is there no possibility that it could be a software issue and I actually have no signal but it still shows bars.
Or is it a case where if it shows bars I definitely have signal but likely to be congestion.
Sorry for all the questions
Not sure to be honest. What I have first hand experience of is that when I was with Vodafone, there were big congestion issues in some parts of London and although the phone was getting a full signal, it was unusable (data wouldn't connect and calls would drop) the only solution to at least being able to make and receive calls was to manually switch the phone to 2g only and forget about 3g during the "busy" hours...
Edit: their forum was also full of people complaining about the same problem in other parts of the UK too...

I've got another question regarding the modems, in another thread someone mentioned that if you are having signal issues it's likely down to the incorrect modem being used.
Now generally all I do is pick a custom rom, flash it and then use the phone as normal.
But should I be picking a rom and using a specific modem version?
Thanks again

Apologies.
I should have known, it's pretty obvious but I'm a bit stupid at times...
My phone - I have ICS - S-OFF Amaze with Energy ROM and I had tried to apply blas0id tweaks.
The problem - In certain areas I don't have phone signal for a few minutes, then suddenly it will show 4 bars for a few minutes. In general the signal seems fickle.
Before ICS upgrade, when I had GB, I always had 4 bars in the same places. I *think* I had good signal with ICS before I did blat0id tweaks, but I am not certain of that. (ICS and the tweaks were within a few days)
My wife's Iphone still has excellent signal in those places. Tmobile Mytouch also has excellent signal in the same places. So something has changed on my amaze and not the cell towers.
What I have done so far -
1. went back to stock ICS by flashing the img file. That did not improve the signal. So then got back to energy
2. Tried another ROM - speedrom. No improvement in signal
3. Tried few apps like fresh network. They did not help
Please help me
What can/should I do? I love my amaze, but if I dont get consistent signal, I will have to replace it
Are there any tweaks that I can try?
How about the custom kernels that have been made for ICS recently, would those help?
Is there a way to increase the power to look for and catch on better signal? I can trade battery life for better signal
Thanks
I have same issue but with WiFi only. I never had GB I hope there is a work around

Found a workaround
This was dumb luck, but when I was trying to play around the app opensignal, it wanted me to set 2G for some of its functionality, since that functionality does not work over 3g. So I went to setup and set Network mode to "GSM Only" from "GSM/WCDMA Auto"
And walla! right after that my signal jumped from 1 bar to 4 bars and has stayed there. I went back to WCDMA and signal dropped, so now I change the network mode only when I need 4G. Its a pain, but at least, the signal is good when I need it.
So with that information, can someone help how I can tweak something to get my 4G and also good signal?
Thanks
try updating the radio if you have done so, even though you are going to have to go through the process of locking the device again and unlocking the bootloader again, that would be an idea to try, we still dont know what changes R2 radio update has done but its deff worth a shot

Also most of the time I have 2 bars of signal in most places, I believe it's faulty hardware

yup, that's what this setting is supposed to do, but it increased the quality of my phone signal, that is what I am trying to make better/consistent. Because even after all the bells and whistles, calling someone/receiving the calls is the primary purpose of the phone for me and if that doesn't work, the phone doesn't work for me

A new sim card is a good idea.. so is removing the back cover and cleaning off the contacts with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Taking something and SLIGHTLY bending out each of the gold contacts so they make better contact with the case, making sure there is no debris.
Another thing to look into- there is a TON of hacks for cellphone signal that can be done in build.prop.. playing with those settings is probably a good idea.
The last idea- the signal is actually NOT different. The number of bars it shows you is now just more ACCURATE. You still lose signal in ONLY the exact places you would have before.. but now when your phone would show you as having 1 or 2 bars(on gingerbread) right before you lose all signal, on ICS it shows you as having NO bars because you truly have almost lost the signal. It is VERY accurate, now that I am in an area with bad signal.. I have actually flashed gingerbread again and things did NOT get better, there was just fewer bars that weren't as accurate. But I lost signal in the same spots, and would lost 4g in the same exact spots..

Guys, OP here. This question/workaround is not about getting 4G. I am getting 4G just fine. Its about the phone signal (the bars). My amaze does not get good phone signal in some areas and when I set the network mode to GSM only (2G), phone signal strength and stability increases. and now I want to figure out how I can keep the setting to 4G and get a good phone signal

Hi SBD, thanks for coming in. I will look into build.prop (ro.ril properties I think) I will also clean any dust inside the phone, may be that will help. The sim card was new when I got my amaze .. but no harm in trying. So I will ask for a new sim card too.
However, in my case, I have a different experience. This is what I did in a weak signal spot.
Have 4G on. I get 0 signal. Can't make a call
go to 2G at the same spot, I get 2-3 bars. I can make a call
I used opensignal app to check signal strength in both cases. with 4G it showed 0. With 2G it showed 42%
Another test. On my route to drop kids off for their day camp, I was on a call (with 4G on) and dropped the call twice (bad reception areas) while going. I switched it to 2G and while coming back did not drop the call.
Before I found this workaround .. people called me and complained that it directly went to voicemail and I never got the call. (no signal). Since I found the workaround, I haven't heard that from anyone.
So I am convinced that there are some real issues in catching the signal with 4G on that get resolved in "2G only" mode. (may be it has to do with the kind of cell towers we have in our area and nothing to do with the phone)
will update if I find more

Yea, it should be lines that have ro.ril that youd eant to change.. and fortunately one of those that you can add(it isn't included by default) will do exactly what you need, default to 2g signal when 4g is too weak. I actually need the same thing, in Jacksonville we have great signal.. except in this new place I moved into. It drains my battery by trying to stay with 4g.. but I don't have time before work to find it.
Look for a tthread by "master&slave" titled something like "super build.prop tweaks" in the vibrant forums, I THINK they had that line.. otherwise google around for something like "build.prop signal tweak" as if it isisn't in that thread, there's a really good one on some other forum.
Also, I remember there being some app that requires root that allows you to toggle between GSM preferred and 2g only.. it changes it at system level, and I don't think it was on the play store, I think it was on Xda.
But yea, I understand your dilemma, and until we get an alternative radio to flash(which I don't forsee), that is the kind of workarounds you need. If you find a reasonable solution make sure to post as it will help me too!

I have had this problem ever since I got my phone in October (right after launch). Updating to ICS didn't help. i've been planning to root and try another ROM, but so far have been skittish as this is my only phone. hasoon, you say it's the SIM card? I am trying the switch to GSM only to see if it makes a difference. My problem is at home - I have terrible service and I live on a mountain with cell phone towers everywhere. My daughter's AT&T and my old AT&T Nokia E71x had excellent service there. I'll let you know if this helps. Maybe a trip to my local t-Mobile store is in order.
It's not the sim card. I noticed on google a lot of people have this problem with htc phones. It's just a bad radio.

Try changing your Modem until you find the right one for you.

Both, really. I think mine automatically changes. And as for modems this seems to be the fasted for me as of yet.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Well the reason why it keep swapping between the 2 is because of poor signal.
But if you goto SETTINGS---MOBILE NETWORKS---NETWORK OPERATORS then wait for it to search then a list of networks will appear.
Select T-MOBILE and it will register you on that network and should find things much quicker.
Be warned though that once your in a lower signal area you will drop to sowing both and will need to do the process again.
And may be worth doing this process everytime you reboot the phone even if its showing as just the one.
I personally have to do this and find that when my network is showing as both then i get browsing speeds only. But when i register it on just T-Mobile then everything like download and streaming are perfectly fast
Damn. Do you think when tmo and orange become ee that it will be a permanent solution?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah because Orange and Tmob will be gone and only EE in its place so yes i can see signal stregth becoming stronger and stable. Rather than swapping between the two all the time.

Has anyone updated their Orange S3 to 4.1.2 through KIES? Does it include any bloatware or anything useful (unlikely).
Also, has anyone taken a dump of the FW?
Just wondering as I have not seen much coverage of this other than that it has been released, eventually.

I doubt EE will go to the trouble of a bespoke radio firmware for their network, the XXELLA modem is working fine for me on EE with 12Mbps speed recorded on occasion (why bother with 4G when H+ is delivering that?).
I'd suggest you try flashing a few of the 4.1.2 radio variants to see if your signal improves, but this may also decrease your battery life.

Orange Signal Boost is a UMA application for Orange -- it allows you to make/receive calls / SMS over wifi when you have no signal. It was in the GS2, but not in the GS3, unfortunately. I was really hoping it would come out as well as I have practically no signal where I live unless I am right next to a window.

Likewise, it is a shocking oversight that they have not brought this out for the S3. I have to stand in my kitchen if I want to use my phone! Sometimes that doesn't work either, so I have an excuse to go to the pub (I get signal there!).
Indeed
XXELLA does give good performance and I have tried modems galore, but when there are many houses between you and the base stations sometimes you just need some help!
On a slightly off topic note has anyone tried the BT Smartalk app? Although its just for outgoing calls its pretty handy for making calls against your BT allowance over WIFI.
If only we could have a seamless phone / wifi handover for calls.....I live in hope (and know that its been punted as a future before)
And I completely agree about the Signal Boost UMA side of things, its was super handy in my S2 when I occasionally ran a stock ROM or installed while rooted, plus I could make calls on the WIFI on the Underground in London, I do miss it!
