Is the original transformer still good? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Is the original transformer still a good piece of electronic?
Or is it way outdated?
Wondering to save up the extra 340$ and buy a prime.
I will only use it for browser and note-taking, + some small apps.

Not really. Nothing against the first Transformer, but specially Tegra 2 is outdated. The Prime is much better and worth every cent.

Sure, it is still a good device. Just a slower processor, heavier, thicker and no super IPS.

I have a prime and an original transformer, and other than the awesome weight and feel of the prime, I like my original transformer better. In my opinion, the Prime was rushed out too early, and has too many flaws at the moment. My original transformer works brilliantly.

Is the original transformer laggy?

Yes ofc... TF101 isnt smooth and ui is often laggy... choppy animations etc.
Tegra 2 has not enough power with 1280x800 resolution. Prime with Tegra 3 is much better, better screen ips +, better cpu, gpu, camera with led, better speakers, aluminium, thiner, etc etc etc.

I think that if you focus on how "smooth" the UI is on the original Transformer, then you'll notice lag. If, however, you just USE the thing without focusing so closely, you'll find that it's actually a pleasure to use. I think the whole "laggy UI" thing is very much the result of the same kind of mentality that focuses so hard on artificial benchmarks. For example, I have a Motorola Photon that benchmarks slower than my Samsung Epic 4G Touch, but in actual use I don't notice a performance difference unless I squint.
That said, the thing about the Prime that I'm looking forward to is the extra brightness from the IPS+ screen so I can finally use the thing outside on my back porch (I live in SoCal, and the whole "Sunny California" thing isn't just marketing). To me, that's a more meaningful difference between the Prime and the original Transformer than any sort of "lagginess"...

HoneyComb is laggy not the hardware......

it still is a great pad. I just put mine up on eBay today! Mines only 4 months old. I loved it. Plus its rooted. It will show on auction at 4pm eastern time

Don't have the Prime yet but the original tf is really good. The main flaws are video decoding and honeycomb ****ty browser but ICS should make it a really worthwhile.

Its funny people talk about tegra 2 being outdated, when there are not many programs for it. You can't even get apps like hbogo and maxgo to work on it. It doesn't matter to me whose fault it is. I have the galaxy 7plus and I can't get madden or nfs hot pursuit to work on it. Great hardware lousy support. Imagine the fewer tegra 3 apps out for this yet. Yes I'm ranting.

hbogo works perfectly on my tegra2 Motorola Atrix4g. I have it. it wouldn't show up in marketplace for the prime though. I might try emailing the apk from my phone to the prime and see if it'll install that way.

for basic use, it's perfectly fine, just a little chunkier and heavier.
the prime is more future proof though being newer hardware, but it really comes down to what you're going to use it for.

Depending on what you want to do with it, the TF101 is still a perfectly useful tablet. I gave my old TF to my woman and she uses the crap out of it. She uses it primarily as a media consumption device with light gaming and occasional note-taking in class.
Just because there's a newer version out doesn't automatically make the previous model obsolete. If a device works for you and does everything you need it to do...why chase after anything else?

For the cost an old transformer is a better option especially if you do just basic stuff. It works fine and the prime is far from perfect yet.

I have both, and intended to wipe my TF and give it to the Mrs. and keep the TFP.
I am now seriously considering taking the TFP back and getting another TF.
Im not impressed with the TFP at all. I honestly feel that the TF is less laggy, and since I dont use it to play games (use it almost exclusively for remote office) the TF has served me very well with its dock.
If I cant get a TFP dock by the end of the week, I will be returning it.

Based on your stated use you are absolutely fine, even if you go a good deal further you are still absolutely fine. The only reason other than some aesthestics and the I can beat an IPAD reasoning is the price difference. If you are paying 399 versus 499 you should probably get the prime. If you are getting it for less which it looks like get the original.

EVO 3D owners who bought Tablets?

I've considering a Tablet for the past month. Debating between the Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPad 2 (if I sell my iPod Touch 4) & Eee Transformer.
The latter looks like it will be the best but I want to hear your experiences. Not getting any 3G/4G models as I'll be tethering it via my EVO 3D.
Too bad the HP Touchpad is too hot for the shelves.

I honestly love the transformer. Didn't think I would use it much but I bought it and then the dock a few days later and sold my netbook. The battery life is what drew me to it and the price. I returned the ipad 2 cause I wanted my paid apps plus it just didn't do it for me even though its a great piece of hardware. I use my TF all night at work tethered to my Co workers evo and couldn't be happier. Honeycomb has its flaws for sure but most can be overcome with apps for now and its getting better with every update.

The xda member with the Dexter avatar was telling me how he enjoyed his TF and he may have just said enough for me to have one on my dining room table by the end of the month. Our house hold has quite a few android phones and tablets but that transformer is really attractive.

I dunno, the TF feels very cheap to me. I have both the iPad 2 and Galaxy 10.1 but if I had to choose I'd go with the 10.1.

Like MyTouch 3G cheap or sturdier? I have to ask because the 2 tablets you own have a very high build quality.
BTW, damn you are an OG member, never seen a '04 XDA member.
Transformer for sure if you're looking for productivity. That's assuming you buy the dock which has an extra battery, usb ports and a regular sized SD port in it. And its super easy to root and almost impossible to brick!

Yeah the Keyboard dock will be in tow, that's what appealed to me. The fact that it's a battery extender, keyboard with touchpad & that it operates via the connector, vs bluetooth really made me love this more.
The low cost is icing the cake for me.
The Galaxy tab and Transformer both have a lot going for them but I think I will wait until toshiba's AT200 drops and decide then.

I got an iPad and a MOTO tablet (xoom ) I like honeycomb is a nice OS , but I prefer my iPad , it has better apps and games, some apps are expensive like numbers bit Damn they couldn't make it any easier to do spreadsheets easier, email is so nice to see and YouTube as well, battery life is outstanding , and i like mgs as well so is great to have the game on my iPad , I wouldnt buy games like Angus birds hd I already have it on my iPhone so is not worth the extra bucks , I wish tapatalk would be like email app to see threads tho but overall great device they have some cheaps docks online , keyboard might cost you a bit if you want one , overall great device having an EVO , iPhone and iPad is the perfect combination for me
Might consider android tablet when ics comes out but as of now iPad is good for me

I'm using the TouchPad with my E3D and of course got it during the first day of the FireSale. However I think it does depend on your funds and what you'll be using it for. Money/Productivity wise I would go with the TF. Being able to remote into your PC plus the keyboard dock is awesome.

You own the 1st or the 2nd iPad?
I've been considering the iPad 2, since I do like to have devices with different OS & I do have quite a few iOS apps but mostly because I was paid to use iOS in a software trial using the iPod Touch 4.
My only gripe is the Home UI, file management & iTunes.

I had an Epic 4G and recently got a TouchPad. After a week or two with the TouchPad I finally got an Evo 3D. Ever since I've rarely used the TouchPad except for a certain game and to show off my TouchPad.
The newer transformers, model b70 which is selling now cannot be rooted. It has a new boot loader. I have a older one without dock and its okay. I bought to have flash...now I am waiting for the new kel- el versions instead of the tegra 2 chipset. Don't have any experience with the galaxy. I also have a iPad one I use. I switch between those two at home and for the road..I use my color nook because of the portability. I don't nave a favorite, they all suck somewhat in my view, iPad strength is software battery life. Transformer strength is cost( but newer ones remember are locked) . If I where you..hold off for a few months till the new chipset comes out..the kal-el as I mention.
I was wanting to sell my iPad . What android tab get the most development.

i had a wifi xoom but honestly, it's got some market downloading issues(honeycomb related) plus sd card is read only and there aren't as many apps available in tablet version... to me i felt it was unnecessary since i have a 15" macbook pro. I couldn't for the life of me find a word processing app to type papers... so i retured it within my 14 days...
I've been rocking the 32 GB Acer Iconia wifi version for about 3 months now! It's a pretty solid creature and it's all but replaced the need for a laptop. (though my PC is still up and running... Tablets really can only do so much)
There's really good development for it here at xda (Vache's Taboonay is my ROM of choice... He was developing for the Acer Liquid E when I first came onto the android scene, and knowing he was developing for the Iconia was one of my reasons for choosing it) His kitchen is full of goodies too (we all love goodies, don't we? )
I like the full sized usb port for using thumb drives, external hard drives and usb keyboard/mouse... Even my old Sony Cybershot was instantly detected, plus the HDMI out is a sweet feature. It's really fast and stable. I've been alternating between Polaris and Docs to Go for word processing and spreadsheets, and in my line of work (chef), I find it really useful for inventory, orders, recipe organization, scheduling, etc. It's better than hauling a laptop around.
Just yesterday, I found out how to wired-tether my evo to share data without having to enable the hotspot. All in all, I'm extremely happy with it!
I've seen a heck of a lot of bad press about it, but can't for the life of me understand why. Head over to the Iconia page, and read what other users have to say. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1133 It's quite popular among those of us who have given it a shot. I think it's something of a hidden gem among better known brands.

Time to "Downgrade" to TF101?

I've had my Prime for about 4 weeks, Friday is the day I need to return to Amazon, unless I can get an extension from Amazon. EDIT: Just talked with Amazon, they won't extend my return period. (My Prime was as Asus for a week, but they just tested it. And I was hoping for a fix for WiFi before I had to return it.)
My WiFi throughput is weak on the Prime. Both Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and HTC Flyer have better WiFi, the Galaxy 10.1 is by far better.
I don't play games, and was thinking of returning the Prime and getting something the performs better on WiFi, perhaps the original Transformer, TF101.
I thought I would post here, since many of you have experience with both the TF101 and TF201, and see what you might suggest.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Why go back to an older model?
Though I suffer a random reboot maybe once a day, I plan to keep my prime to see what the Asus team says.
However, I do plan on buying my wife *cough* more for me prob *cough* the Toshiba Excite X10 when that comes out later in the month. That one looks real interesting as well IMO.
Prime or nothing.
I would not buy another Tegra 2 today. Prime is much better.

No games out there are dedicated to the Prime, most of them will run on Tegra 2 based tabs. By the time the new games come out, they will probably be optimized for HD 1080 or 720p screens and quadcores which means Prime owners have to wait for the rest of the Android market to catch up.

People are always fixated on what is on the paper so since the Prime has better specs, people just bow down to it and try and look past its widely discussed flaws. How well did that work for the Philadelphia Eagles this past football season?

First of all there is Glowball, something NO Tegra 2 tablet can run.
Secondly, when you play games like Shawdowrun HD, Riptide, and Shinerunner the quality of graphics is improved on Tegra 3 devices.

Bull. The Tegra 2 sucks. Outright sucks.
First of all, the GPU is too weak for the resolution of Android tablets. Even with Tegra 2 games the Prime plays the games MUCH smoother. Tegra 2's GPU was meant for WVGA resolutions not 720p+. The Tegra 2 is SPANKED by not only the Tegra 3 but also the Mali in the SGS2 and the iPad 2' GPU.
Simply put, if you want smooth gameplay, Tegra 2 is simply not a good option.
Then there are the other problems with Tegra 2- NO high profile h264 support (so FORGET playing mkvs in hardware mode), NO NEON support (when MANY apps optimize for NEON because quite simply every other major SoC- including Tegra 3- has NEON support), and a lower per-core clockspeed.
I can understand someone not wanting the Prime because of issues, but lets not pretend the original is something it is not.
Buying a TF101 today is like buying a freaking brand new Pentium D desktop- it was fine in its day but nowadays the alternatives are MAGNITUDES faster. In particular, the Prime is at least three times faster than the TF101.
The better solution is to wait for other Tegra 3 tablets. Pretending Tegra 2 is still a good value in 2012 doesn't help anyone. There is a reason Tegra 2 ended up being the low-end of the last generation of dual-core SoCs.

The Prime is WAY better for video decoding as it supports NEON instructions
I like my prime a lot better then my tf101... Like pretty much every new android device I have ever had phones including the first 3 to 8 months of its life is buggy until the developers work it all out, they are slow. The original tf101 was also plagued with issues when it first released and honestly still has some. I sold mine to a friend for 200 a couple weeks ago. It should be getting ICS this month so it should get better...should...
But even my phones that are android based have all had their problems. The best ones are the ones that got a good open source developer making custom roms that work great. I am running a vibrant and a mytouch with custom roms and they are awesome. I cant wait till Asus releases the bootloader unlocked.
There is sooo much you can do with software man. I'm amazed how good the prime runs right now. Its the first tegra3 quad core device (drivers will get much better) and its one of the first ICS devices, which also isnt perfect yet. The bootloader will be unlocked soon...
Yes the aluminum case isnt optimal for radio signals. But in my case all radio related stuff works just fine (even GPS when i'm outside - i get a fix in under 1min). What i want to say there are some hardware limitations but overall i'm sure in 6months EVERY aspect of the Prime will be much improved.
I witnessed that on my past 2 phones. You should compare my DHD from when I first bought it with stock&branded Froyo/Sense 2.0 firmware, to now with a Custom rom and Gingerbread 2.3.5/Sense 3.5. Its like a completely new phone. Battery life is almost doubled for example.
But the OP is right. If you want a device with good software you should not buy a completely new device. But does that justify buying an older phone/tablet? For me i dont think so. I think its much better to look for popular devices that will likely have a big community and many devs. And of course are unlockable. Thats why i know the Prime is an awesome device. I'm sure devs will do great things with it

Why would you want to support Asus by getting the TF101 when they refuse to admit there is a problem with the Prime? Until they fix the issue with the Prime, we all should stop purchasing Asus products (at least their tablets) and send them a message.

Well, I know what Asus knows there is a WiFi problem. And that Asus is working to fix it.
I'm just looking to get the best tablet for me. I thought that might be the Prime, but the WiFi is definitely weaker than other tablets I've checked.

People are always fixated on what is on the paper so since the Prime has better specs, people just bow down to it and try and look past its widely discussed flaws. How well did that work for the Philadelphia Eagles this past football season?

Hey, yo, why you have to take a shot at my Eagles in a thread about a tablet??

My TFP is faster than the new ipad except 3D graphics

Someone benchmarked the new ipad vs TFP here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jdbtiNnZzE
The new ipad blows away TFP on 3D graphics benchmark. Nvidia better go back to the drawing board. On Browsermark and Sunspider benchmarks, the stock TFP fair OK against the new ipad. But my TFP running Virtuous Prime at 1.6Ghz beats the new ipad on Browsermark and Sunspider:
Browsermarks Benchmark (higher score is better)
new ipad: 99561
stock TFP: 100849
my TFP: 130000+ (I don't have my TFP me at work, so roughly that)
Sunspider Benchmark (less time is better)
new ipad: 1825 ms
stock TFP: 2344 ms
my TFP: ~1700 ms
Aaaaaaaaahhhhhh!

stock prime running 1.6ghz overclock can score even higher than that. it was already known the CPU from Tegra3 smokes the A5x. The A5x edges out the gpu from prime. A5x gpu used mostly to power the screen though. most of ghost graphics benchmarks is with screen off. Anyways they both on the gpu front. we still have optimized games for tegra3, therefore our games look better and has more effects.
the a5x seems indeed to be faster, but the tegra3 has some special effects that the a5x is unable to process. unfortunally the games have to be 'tegra optimzed', and apple is has more content atm, but more and more developers take android seriously, future of android gaming will be sweet.

"We" have a 2048x1536 screen and a better GPU therefore our games look better when optimized. Yes, I do own the new iPad now.
Yeah I know this horse has been beat to death by now but the new IPAD has to push 4x the pixels so to keep up with the prime it needs to be a Minimum of 4x faster. Honestly until we hit the sub 22nm, this kind of gpu will be a HUGE drain on battery for mobile usage.
I say lets go to 1080p then put a huge emphasis on lighting effects. 720p for 7inch.

you funny...good for you then. well you not making much use of that powerful gpu hanging around prime forums so much.
a key word you mentioned was "when" optimized. even ipad2 had only less than a handful of games optimized for it. there won't hardly be any. reason why? because apple developers make most of their content to be played on any generation device. plus my ipad1 Infinity Blade2 still looks just as good as the new Ipad one. aside from better screen and little bit more detailed. but side by side they basically look the same. that's why I never upgraded to ipad2. cause my original Ipad still played all the same content flawlessly.
on another note, what games do you have that they updated for the new resolution? I know there isn't any new Ipad optimized games yet. that won't come until that RPG infinity blade dungeons Come out.
do you have that new Mass effect game? its coming to android also and will be tegra3 optimized. that game does look cool. not sure if i want to buy it for my Ipad or just wait for android version, which will be better

Are you kidding me? The device is out for 1 day in my country and a week in others, do you think every dev magicly transforms it in a high res app? It will take some time just as with the iPhone 4.

please, you don't even want to go there. new Ipad had more issues than prime now...lmfao. its all over the national news channels. overheating, wifi issues(wifi can't connect at all or super slow wifi speeds), LTE issues, Ipad not charging, screen tearing /graphical glitches, screen bleeding and more don't make me post all the links to those threads. even the moderator on ipadforums came out and confirmed new Ipad has a bunch of issues or at least alot of bad batches out there. nothing is sweet and perfect over in apple land also.

that's the point. only been out a week and has already had issues plastered all over every major tech site and consumer reports. plus all the television news stations here in U.S. are broadcasting the issues also. new Ipad is good but don't act like it doesn't have its share of issues also. its like I said before, no device is perfect. even the best selling tablet, Ipad, has major issues also. but instead Ipad issues are in far greater numbers than prime. then apple came out and publicly denied the issues despite proof of them.

I have noticed it is getting a little warm when gaming, but nothing serious for me at least.
WiFi:
Next to router
iPad: 20mbps
Prime: 20mbps
1 floor down
iPad: 20mbps
Prime: 8mbps
2 floors down
iPad: 20mbps (3/4 bars)
Prime: lost signal
Yeah, really unhappy with my iPads WiFi.
Personally, I find the Prime to be plenty fast, with the only area needing significant improvement being browsing. However, I'm also of the opinion that browsing isn't being held back by the processor (or its performance in any benchmarks), but just that the ICS browser needs to be optimized. Chrome is better, but I've found it too unstable for production use.
Once the browser speed is improved, the Prime will be an overall exceptional performer. Enough so that I'm rethinking my reluctance to consider the high-res screen on the TF700--I think the Tegra 3 will be just fine there as well (although the impact on the highest-end games perhaps remains a question mark).

Dude why waste your time, SERIOUSLY. All I know is my android devices sure is collecting alot of dust lately.
Phone I'll stick with android but tablet (after trying out two prime and still owning a xoom) the new Ipad gets most of my attention.
I returned the prime in favor of the new iPad...it's such a shame, but the prime was just..not ready for release. I waited a week via preorder, and received about half the left side full of light bleeding, and when docked, opening and closing didn't feel right..you could tell something was going to give, so back it went.
I noticed a side of the dock was higher than the other, it created uneven flex when opening and closing,..so I completely understand the screen cracking issue. Another preorder would of been another week of waiting, and hoping the new unit wouldn't have the same issues...it just wasn't worth it.
While I had it I also bought the new iPad, and did numerous side by side tests of different websites I actually use...I kept the one that was faster. Another benefit is the stock keyboard is actually very easy to type on, better than stock android and thumb keyboard.
I could also finally take notes via stylus much quicker than I could with the prime, and have a great app for it.
Based on what I read here, I didn't think I could send or open email attachments and download files for offline, but that's untrue. Many of the things I heard on this forum actually turned out to be untrue regarding the new iPad, or have work arounds..at least for stuff I actually use.
Anyway, very disappointed with the prime and asus for releasing it as they did. I'd love to order one again, but I won't in the quality I received it.

I Gotta Ask
Why the FOCK all these comparison threads or discussions about Ipad ?
I personally brought the Prime because of total dislike of Ios & Apple, so I don't give a flying fig what Ipad can do or what it cant, this Prime general section has more Apple/Ipad comparisons, hardware talk etc than anything Prime/Android.
I come here to read about Prime not Ios/Apple , come on chaps let it go, the majority I think have had enough of this , Take your Apple talk to an Apple forum

Some people just have too much time to troll these forums. Usually means unemployed or unmarried. Quite frankley I could care less. If I wanted an IPAD I could buy one, in fact I could have bought about 9 with my last pay check but I much prefer my crappy useless transformer prime. Either way this thread will be shut down by tomorrow.

If you must have a quad-core why not the TF300T, its cheaper Wifi and GPS works and you probably wont feel as bad if it does not perform well.
I have the Prime and I can tell you now that the performance is not what you will expect from a quad core and not worth it for the premium price.
I own both and love my prime, It's so much thinner and sexier looking. hehe It does have it's fair share of QC issues, so I would read through the forum to learn about the most common ones. I've had two and decided to settle on this 3rd as it only has a little backlight bleed but I have yet to see a prime(and I've seen about 6 of them including the 2 I had and 1 I have now) or a tf 101(and I owned a few of them too 1 16GB model 1 32GB model and a replacement 32gb model) that had ZERO backlight bleed. I mean absolutely none. And I noticed on two of my primes on a side angle the screen washes out, or appears to have a glow to it compared to the tf 101. but yes, overall it's much better than the tf101.
Thanks for your replies!
I guess I really would like a quad core tablet that could use my dock, so prime is the way to go right?

prime is the way to go. I have a great working one. well worth it. some have issues but not the case with all primes, like some like to make it seem like.
prime has its own dock though. you can't use any new transformer tablet with old tf101 dock. every tablet has its own matching dock. you get a prime. you will have to buy dock made for prime. you buy a 300, you will need dock for 300 model. not interchangeable. prime dock rocks though. you can get 18hrs. rated battery life with prime n dock combined. real life it like 16hrs. depends on usage. its possible to pull 18+hrs.
I would hold off on the prime until the galaxy note 10.1 drops to see how it compares. So far most devices with Tegra3 haven't been all that.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Honestly I would stay away from the prime. I have one of the latest and despite the recent updates I would consider it flawed. The weak wfi and crappy gps I could not recommend this at all.
Add another vote for wait, there are way to many possible better options right now and in the near future. I would most certainly hold off until after this update to see if it fixes things. So far the main things the prime can do that my OG transformer couldn't is some games, the screen and play mkv out of the box. But playing video on my tab will cause it to reboot. Lastly, if possible check out windows 8 see if this appeals to you because this will be another option.
Also my prime has never out performed my original transformer (other than what I mentioned above) OC'ed running the Revolver roms HC or ICS. Just my 2 pennies.
It's worth it imo. I have one of the early BC models and I love it! Check out the Positive Tranformer Prime thread I have linked on my signature. Good place to start at. Most of everyone is quite happy with there TF201s.
Currently Prime aren't so great on the current firmware and if u have to wait for the next one, u might as wait for the Galaxy Note 10.1 too.
Sooner or later someone will do a Galaxy S III vs Prime video and the results probably won't be pretty to Asus users but I imagine it tells u what the Note 10.1 would do.
Simply put... do your own research & test it out at retails stores if possible. Reading reviews or getting recommendation from forum isn't the way to go with Transformer Prime. Simply put, do your own research (including other tablets) & decide what is best for you.
As for Transformer Prime, you will either hate it or love it. There are Primes with issues (not just s/w but I'm talking about h/w) & there are Primes without any issue (or just satisfactory to each individuals standard). It is 50/50 (I'm being generous here although.. I could just as be bias as I am frustrated with my Prime) in ratio/percentage.... & you are seriously taking a risk. However, if you purchase a Prime without any issue... it really is a nice device (at least in theory to me as I have Prime with issues).

Its hard to get an accurate pic from research or even playing around from one or two store test units.
So many people report so many problems yet so many responses coming back with fixes, also possibility of further firmware updates, hardware duds etc.
The volume of complaints is definitely off-putting and personally I don't see any advantage in 1080p screen @ 10" size, just drags down performance so I can't see the pixels anymore if I squint, big whoop. Heck I think the 1080p screen in my 15" laptop is overkill lol.

if you mean other than asus, yes. BUT it will be a while before it is seen. its more so on the win8 front of other tablet makers coming out with a keyboard dock. no releases anytime soon for competing manufacturer tablets with docks.
Its your call. Asus is leading the pack right now on the Android tablet front with Nvidia's tegra3. Whether Android or the upcoming win8 tablets. 300 is fine. Prime is fine. Infinity pad will be fine. all have tried and proven keyboard dock solutions which add extra versatility and extra battery life. it turns prime into almost a whole new beast. Once i got my keyboard dock for my prime, i could now see what all the hype was over it. the dock is a must have. plus it functions as a stand for your prime also
Tegra3 is where its at right now.
Just check out the thread link in my sig called Positive Transformer thread, and you will see testimonials of Happy prime owners. Its just the flip side to those with issues. Everything needs balance.
good luck with deciding. Like others have said, DECIDE FOR YOURSELF
prime is sexier, no doubt.
300 is more functional and quite a bit faster at less expense.
Overall if you upgrade to a 300 i dont think you would be dissapointed. Prime is nice but really for what you will notice, 300 is better i think. YMMV

Does the Transformer Prime really have a Tegra 3 quad-core processor??

I remember when I first saw this video presentation and how excited it made me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dZsS-C6f2Q
I also remember seeing this video which sold me on the Tegra 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thwgwQMXR84&feature=relmfu
At the time when I watched these video I my only Android device was the Samsung Vibrant with its single core. Battery life on that phone was ok at best but I couldn't play certain games because framerates were slow or things got chuggy depending on the game or app. I love live wallpapers and I couldn't use them much because they'd slow my phone down bigtime. So you can only imagine my excitement for the Transformer Prime.
So now its been a few months since I've had the Prime (which is rooted and running a stable custom rom) and yes it does handle things better than my old Vibrant phone. However, my Prime still stutters when scrolling from screen to screen, chugs sometimes when I load certain apps and run some live wallpapers. I honestly thought a quadcore processor would have solved all of that.
What I find more puzzling is that I just upgraded to the Galaxy S3 and bought the The Amazing Spiderman game. Why is it that my phone runs The Amazing Spiderman better than my Prime?? Silky smooth on my GS3 which is a dual-core but stuttery on my Prime with a quad-core. If anything I expected my Prime to outperform the GS3 but no. Did I miss something here???
Most probably tested and optimized on the gs3 cuz it sells very well. Secondly gameloft is terrible when it come to coding on android

Ipad by any chance? I don't like Apple gadgets, but would buy even the original ipad ten times before buying this Prime. As far as being "run out of town" for putting the Prime down, I'm not here to make friends or seek anyone's approval. I am here to learn, to improve my device, and to give my opinion when I feel that it's warranted. Asus released a device that should have never been released in it's current state, and had the nerve to charge a premium price for a device that doesn't even perform up to par with my old original Evo. And we are all idiots for buying it. Hats off to this community of devs, who were able to squeeze every ounce of performance out of this device with no help from Asus. I realize that there is only so much we can do, but as usual, the community comes through and finds workarounds for the problems that the manufacturer causes. My Samsung Galaxy S II is a beautiful device, and while it goes without saying that I will never buy another Asus device again, I would go as far as to say that I will never buy another Android device that is not made by Samsung.
The S3 is quad core and my prime does not lag at all. If we can fix the memory bottleneck then it will be hard to beat.

No, it is not optimized for GS3. Simply because there are multiple version of GS3.... one with exyno quad-core(international version), one with S4 krait dual-core(US version)... and so forth. If you think Gameloft is terrible at coding for android... you can pretty much say the same for basically all android game devs.
Yeah basically, although equipped with a quadcore processor it really operates and feels more like what I would have expected a dual core to feel like. Yet my GS3 (T-mobile) with its dual-core operates much more fluently than my Prime does. What surprised me is that my phone handles things with ease that my Prime sometimes chugs at. Not saying that Prime sucks because it does't and for the most part I'm satisfied with it. I'm just a little underwhelmed with its performance. There's no reason my Prime should stutter or chug at certain things. Playing The Amazing Spiderman on the Prime is little disappointing......thank God for my GS3 I guess.
Lemme explain gameloft makes games for android and most android phones run qualcom CPUs and gpus. So qualcom devices have better gaming just because most devs know that most phones use qualcom snapdragon s3 or s4. Tegra on the other hand is tablet only for most part and theres like couple million tablets on the market comparedto the hundred million phones or so. Which do you think would het the priority in development first?

Big problem is the scheduling I/O and this has been discussed. Not sure if the new JB kernel will fix the problems but if you can take it back for free upgrade to an Infinity or wait for something better/more stable. I love my Prime and it's not a primary gaming device for me (have my ps3, xbox, and PC for that) so I don't notice it at all.

There games are absurdly huge and many gameloft games play better on my 4 year old iPod touch than my gs2 so ya I think they're terrible at coding.

Ya even my gs2 skyrocket with only an snapdragon s3 (not even exynos) can outperform the prime in many things I was very dissapoinyed with much of the performance, especially with the browser which my skyrocket is amazing at, usual for Samsung. But I think jellybean will improve the performance a lot
