I'm from Aus and trying to get a non-savvy US (Cali, splitting time between Sac and SF) friend set up with an unlocked phone suitable for short-term US and overseas use due to travel requirements. The Amaze 4G looks great. I've tried to find answers, but would like some knowledgable eyeballs on my proposal:
1. A US website currently has the Amaze 4G for $479.50 which is much cheaper than all other options. Is this legit? Is there only the X715M model out there, or is this a predecessor?
2. Are all unlocked 'Tmo' Amaze 4G phones able to operate on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 as well as UMTS 1700/2100, both physically and as allowed by the carrier? Any weird APN/data connectivity restrictions due to unlocked phone?
3. Can this phone connect to Tmo at 3G speeds if AWS is unavailable? I read somewhere that 3G 1900 would be required, and this phone doesn't appear to have that?
4. I want to get it on the $30/m walmart/tmo prepaid plan (5G uncapped is plenty of data) but can't see how to order just the sim via their website. should I just have my friend go into walmart? prefer not to muck around with simplemobile if possible - ironically, i want to keep this whole enterprise as simple as possible with a big carrier/theoretically good support.
5. Is this idea, for use in the US primarily but also overseas over the next 12 or so months, future-proof for a couple of years? e.g. I've read about tmo working on HSPA 1900MHz, but hopefully AT&T remains an option if Tmo ends up being unsatisfactory for any reason.

1. 479 sounds legit for phone, i dont know about x715m but i do know that us tmobile version is compatible with all bands networks.
2. Yes all US tmobile amaze 4g operate on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 as well as UMTS 1700/2100, both physically and as allowed by the carrier. As far as apn you would need to set up your apn settings according to the network you are using.
3. If no AWS available then only 2g Edge will work, although I have called tmobile and asked if amaze 4g unlocked will be able to use att's hspa network and they said yes amaze and sg2 are only phones capable of that meaning they were built with future proof in mind. I also seen around that tmobile version has all 3g network bands but not sure myself.
4. Easiest would be to have friend pay and pick up the sim card at walmart but i do remind you it is 30/m- 100 min and 5gb of 4g speeds CAPPED, but 2g edge speeds after the 5gb. Simple mobile is 60/m - unltd talk unlt text and 2gb of 4g speeds capped then 2g edge speeds after just depends on your preference.
5. This is a good idea as att will stil be an option and now that att failed to buy tmobile, att has come to an agreement in a roaming contract with tmobile for 7 years.

Negri said they're on backorder so I went ahead and ordered the phone from an Amazon seller for $500. I can only hope everything's legit - I'm not too sure what the dangers of this option are. My best idea is just to use the phone heavily in the first week after getting it and make sure everything works.
now i just need a "beginners guide to android" to help the friend work through the basics... google time.

nope, i've had a HTC Hero and currently run a SGS2. I bought the Amaze for a friend who's new to Android due to Apple's stupid GSM-only unlocked phones, and their lack of 1.7ghz for tmo.
we'll get through it, tho after 15 mins of googling, there's a distinct lack of good "idiot user's (not programmer's) guide to android" articles/books. will write something up myself, i think.
my response to you above is more fishing for people's ideas about how Amazon sellers can be dodgy, esp. when pretty much every website is still doing the Amaze for $6-700.. I wondered if there were any potential pitfalls with the $500 price.

I bought mine from eBay. It was used for a week with everything and he gave me an Incipio case. I bought it for $445. I was happy with it.

From what i understand, this phone has UMTS/HSPA+ support for 850,1700/2100aws/1900mhz and 2100mhz. Pretty much anywhere in the world that uses those.

I'm in New Zealand and i use telecom XT network (umts 850mhz) so obviously the at&t version will work fine. I also perhaps have the opportunity of buying the umts quadband version (850,900,1900,2100) which would probably not have the same restrictions as the at&t 4G.
However, from lurking here i can see that there seems to be more dev happening on the 4G, is this correct or would i be better off with the vanilla quadband 3g version? (im not 100% sure where the local stores source these vanilla phones from)
One day i might change to another provider in which case i would need 900 umts but if there is more chance of getting more bang for my buck with the 4g i will go that way.
Yeah it would be easier just to buy a galaxy 2 but its big and cheap feeling and i just dont trust samsung build quality or gps as much as the Moto.

Yep i understand that the 4g is just a marketing buzzword. What i'm asking is to me it looks like the vanilla phone appears to be identical hardware just with an extra 3g band? Also which model is likely to have the better dev support and moto support if they do decide to unlock the bootloader for certain ops?
Is the atrix 4g only sold on AT&T or are other operators also selling htis elsewhere in the world?
I'm just wanting to make sure i buy the model with the best support moving forward as it has to be a keeper for a while. I've flashed the absolute hell out of my milestone and sadly realise that due to the ram its never going to amount to much more.

However, my friend told me that AT&T and T-Mobile has different 4G networks. He said the AT&T Atrix can not use 3G or 4G speed on a T-Mobile network, It can only go up to Edge speed.... Is that true? Does anyone know about this?

From everything I have read that is correct, but also know that it won't be much longer till you are back as an AT&T customer since they are acquiring T-Mobile.

Its true. While both AT&T and T-Mobile use HSPA+ for their "4G" speeds, they run on different bands. If you want 3G/4G, use a T-Mobile phone. Otherwise, enjoy EDGE. Opera Mini with images set to low will be a big help.
T-Mobile leases cellular space from AT&T which is why unlocked AT&T phones can use T-Mobile service. Not sure if it is the phone's software issue that is causing the 4G/3Gnot working. It's possible that T-mobile implemented their so called 4G first but it's still AT&T equipment.....I work for AT&T. Also 4G, is just higher speed 3G, 4G LTE won't be rolling out until next year.

Yep, but sucks that they still charge minutes when I call a T-Mobile number. I'm switching it for my girlfriend, so I can get Unlimited mobile to mobile minutes... I might get a sensation when I switch to T-Mobile

Good job on the misinformation front.
And also not being helpful, I'm going to assume your in sales and don't actually know anything.
Now on to the OP's question.
T-Mobile uses the same type of technology as AT&T however they operate on different bands. As such most devices that are sold on AT&T will be able work on T-Mobile for phone and edge but don't get 3g or hspa+ due to the radio in the device only supporting some of the bands. Which is why as a general rule AT&T phones such as the iphone, will work on T-Mobile if unlocked but can't use 3g because it doesn't have the ability to operate in the correct MHZ range. Its the same going from T-Mobile to AT&T. My HD2 was awesome, other then the slow data. *Not that my atrix or inspire are much better.
There are exceptions to the rule though. You'll have to check to see which bands the Atrix is capable of using. I know some of the Samsung devices had all the GSM bands so they worked fine on all networks.
the answer is NO the atrix will not work on tmobile USA 3G or 4G network. there, done!

Problem is that if/when the AT&T/T-mobile merger goes through, AT&T will likely flip Tmobile's 3g towers to 4g. All tmobile 3G phones...sorry no more 3g unless you buy a new phone. yay....

They won't just flip a switch and everyone has to buy new phones. They will be phased out as people finish contracts and begin new ones. If they don't, they'll be buying T-Mobile customers all new phones or paying fatcat lawyers to defend them from all the lawsuits.

Agreed, sorry I used the term 'flip', never meant to say it would happen instantly . The article I linked stated the switch would take several years. That's not written in stone though, AT&T could move up the timeline if they are losing too many customers to Verizon and Sprint.
This is only an issue if you plan on keeping your tmobile 3g phone for YEARS, which is not likely for anyone that frequents xda .

Any suggestions on using Wind or Telus for HTC Amaze? I know that Wind/Mobilicity uses AWS (1700/2100) band, and that apparently doesn't penetrate buildings very well. And Telus uses the GMS, but don't like reputation. I would like to unlock the phone afterwards as I will be moving east during the year and if I am not satisfied with the provider well I would like to change.
Any tips on which company's phone would be easier to unlock and with which unlocking company you might recommend?

Wind unlocks after 3 months service. Telus doesn't. I think the choice is easy enough

1700/2100 Wind is using isn't all that different from any other carrier that much. Telus does not use GSM (in North America/Brazil GSM is 850 and 1900 mhz) Telus uses CDMA 800/1900 mhz. The lower the frequency the better penetration through the walls, but it goes into reverse as far as ability to carry data - the lower the frequency the less data it can carry. I've yet to grasp LTE and 700 mhz, seems so contradictory = high speed but voice only, who cares? Someone please fill us in...
Also, Telus uses the 850 band for HSPA. Therefore the HTC Amaze from both Telus and Wind could work on either network if unlocked.

Your information is quite wrong.
Telus had a GSM network since 2010, operating on 850/1900.
1700/2100 is a weird frequency for 3G service due it only "recently" getting use as a 3G band through t-mobile.
700MHz is a band that LTE can be used on. So are 1700 and 2100 (Rogers, Bell LTE).
tl;dr: buy a Wind Amaze. Try them for 3 months on some plan. It'll be cheaper than buying a Telus one and getting service for those 3 months, then paying to unlock.
I have to chime in here and say, every person ive talked to that is on wind sounds like crap, most of them complain about spotty service, i know the pub in the area i live in, which is a popular area you get 0 service inside or out, deal breaker for me. I like to sound clear and get service everywhere, and ill pay for it.
Go with wind. A lot easier to get out of in the 14 day grace period. Also a lot easier to get out of in general. Their networks are fine. Sorry to the above poster, but their networks are just fine. Sound quality is probably phone dependant.

+1, I have zero issues with my service.
Wind rocks!! $40/mo for unlimited everything.. sound q is perfect..
I Only get dropped by calls To a robers or dingaling or smellus.. reception is perfect. When they call me back from home phone.. yes it Is a conspiracy against wind by the majors... No contract, no cancellation fees etc...
They are in bc and the Flatlands too.. I think
Others are haters.. dont doubt it!...

No experience with Wind on the Amaze, but did have someone test it on their Telus connection and the speeds were very nice.
Works GREAT on the WIND network.
You can buy an Amaze from Telus without a plan, at least I did back in Nov. just had to drop an additional $100 on the total cost. I just unlocked it to use on Rogers network followed by Bell.
Decided to switch carriers, got the New contract and now the extra phone (Nexus). Good luck shopping the Amaze is a great phone!

An Amaze from wind costs 50 bucks less outright. Factor in taxes and stuff, and that's still your first month of service compared to buying a Telus one.
You also have to consider Wind is great when your in major centers but if your driving anywhere out of town, good bye service. Im in Canada dont know how big wind is in the states. Im not trying to hate on Wind, but in Calgary the service is pretty spotty, and were a pretty major city

Wind's roaming in the States is pretty inexpensive - $.25 for a minute. Most of Rogers users pay more just for being 100 kms from their home zone.
By the way Amaze is pentaband 3G phone - it will work with most operators in the world.

Going to just point out that you already posted saying you don't really have any first hand experience. It's already been mentioned that wind is best for people that don't leave the city.

Telus and Bell are the best network choices in Canada if you travel often since they have shared network agreements. The only time I've ever roamed on the network was in northern Ontario which is still better than the 10 hours worth of no service driving on the Rogers network.

Very easy, cost depends on source...$15-$25.

I've used both sites, mobileincanada for my Amaze $22 I believe was the total (Telus).

I'm vacationing in the US in the Fall (October) and I'd really like to be able to use my International-spec S3 over there for some data usage (Google Maps, but more especially these apps that give the queue times at attractions).
Now I know that T-Mobile (my UK carrier) is a non-starter - because apparently they (for lord knows what reason) use two frequency bands for data - one being a 1700MHz band that the non-US S3 doesn't support.
AT&T seemed to be okay, but I don't see any way to get a plan with a decent amount of data allowance that doesn't need you to setup a monthly contract against a US address.
Only option at the moment seems to be this "Straight Talk" company which was mentioned/recommended by someone else here in reply to a comment I made on an article. But I don't know much about them.
So - anyone out there in xda-land got any advice for me? Ideally what I'm looking for is some company that'll let me have a pre-paid plan with 250MB+ of data that I can use for two weeks, and only uses the 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 bands which my S3 supports. Where are you going to traveling to? There are different carriers in different regions of the USA. At&t does have prepaid plans without commitments.

I currently use H2O Wireless, which is an MVNO for AT&T. You can pickup a sim card from any best buy and activate online in less than 10 minutes. You get unlimited voice/text and 2GB of data for $60 a month. I'm in California, not sure where you will be visiting but it works for me. I had Red Pocket when I was using my Nexus and they worked great also. Just a bit less convienant in getting a sim card.
One note tho, you will need to cut down the H2O sim to work with the S3, I found a template online and with a sharp pair of scissors was done in about 2 minutes.

I bought a SIM cutter from eBay a couple of months back (when I got my S3, because my then-current SIM was the full sized variety and I didn't want the hassle/expense of requesting a new one from the carrier)

First and foremost I'd like to say .... Man, it feels good to be back. I left Android for a few years due to battery issues. I just left VZW and switched from a iPhone 5 to a Note 3 on T-Mobile. My wife has a VZW HTC One (M7) and I was told it would work on TMo, so far we are having no luck getting anything besides Edge. Sorry if already posted but I did look around to try to find an answer. I have spent time talking to VZW, TMo and HTC and no luck. Will rooting give me the ability to fix this?

My wife has a VZW HTC One (M7) and I was told it would work on TMo, so far we are having no luck getting anything besides Edge. Sorry if already posted but I did look around to try to find an answer. I have spent time talking to VZW, TMo and HTC and no luck. Will rooting give me the ability to fix this?

Verizon phones rarely work on other carriers. Besides the fact that they usually lock the SIM (meaning only VZW SIM cards will work unless you leave the US - ie: "global phone"), different cellular frequency bands are used. Specs on the M7 that I found on phonearena state that the VZW M7 uses 700MHz (band 13), which T-Mobile doesn't use (PA's specs aren't always 100%% though). So even if you could unlock the SIM somehow, you wouldn't get data; not at LTE speeds anyway. LTE radios in phones are actually fairly expensive components, so carriers will often order specific versions from the manufacturers that only support their own bands to keep costs down (and/or profits high).
I think your best bet would be to sell or trade the M7 for a T-Mobile or unlocked one.

Thanks sent ... Thats what I figured. I'd researched this quite a bit. Figured I'd come to the big boys to make sure.
