Hi there,
Any suggestions on using Wind or Telus for HTC Amaze? I know that Wind/Mobilicity uses AWS (1700/2100) band, and that apparently doesn't penetrate buildings very well. And Telus uses the GMS, but don't like reputation. I would like to unlock the phone afterwards as I will be moving east during the year and if I am not satisfied with the provider well I would like to change.
Any tips on which company's phone would be easier to unlock and with which unlocking company you might recommend?

Wind unlocks after 3 months service. Telus doesn't. I think the choice is easy enough

1700/2100 Wind is using isn't all that different from any other carrier that much. Telus does not use GSM (in North America/Brazil GSM is 850 and 1900 mhz) Telus uses CDMA 800/1900 mhz. The lower the frequency the better penetration through the walls, but it goes into reverse as far as ability to carry data - the lower the frequency the less data it can carry. I've yet to grasp LTE and 700 mhz, seems so contradictory = high speed but voice only, who cares? Someone please fill us in...
Also, Telus uses the 850 band for HSPA. Therefore the HTC Amaze from both Telus and Wind could work on either network if unlocked.

Your information is quite wrong.
Telus had a GSM network since 2010, operating on 850/1900.
1700/2100 is a weird frequency for 3G service due it only "recently" getting use as a 3G band through t-mobile.
700MHz is a band that LTE can be used on. So are 1700 and 2100 (Rogers, Bell LTE).
tl;dr: buy a Wind Amaze. Try them for 3 months on some plan. It'll be cheaper than buying a Telus one and getting service for those 3 months, then paying to unlock.
I have to chime in here and say, every person ive talked to that is on wind sounds like crap, most of them complain about spotty service, i know the pub in the area i live in, which is a popular area you get 0 service inside or out, deal breaker for me. I like to sound clear and get service everywhere, and ill pay for it.
Go with wind. A lot easier to get out of in the 14 day grace period. Also a lot easier to get out of in general. Their networks are fine. Sorry to the above poster, but their networks are just fine. Sound quality is probably phone dependant.

+1, I have zero issues with my service.
Wind rocks!! $40/mo for unlimited everything.. sound q is perfect..
I Only get dropped by calls To a robers or dingaling or smellus.. reception is perfect. When they call me back from home phone.. yes it Is a conspiracy against wind by the majors... No contract, no cancellation fees etc...
They are in bc and the Flatlands too.. I think
Others are haters.. dont doubt it!...

No experience with Wind on the Amaze, but did have someone test it on their Telus connection and the speeds were very nice.
Works GREAT on the WIND network.
You can buy an Amaze from Telus without a plan, at least I did back in Nov. just had to drop an additional $100 on the total cost. I just unlocked it to use on Rogers network followed by Bell.
Decided to switch carriers, got the New contract and now the extra phone (Nexus). Good luck shopping the Amaze is a great phone!

An Amaze from wind costs 50 bucks less outright. Factor in taxes and stuff, and that's still your first month of service compared to buying a Telus one.
You also have to consider Wind is great when your in major centers but if your driving anywhere out of town, good bye service. Im in Canada dont know how big wind is in the states. Im not trying to hate on Wind, but in Calgary the service is pretty spotty, and were a pretty major city

Wind's roaming in the States is pretty inexpensive - $.25 for a minute. Most of Rogers users pay more just for being 100 kms from their home zone.
By the way Amaze is pentaband 3G phone - it will work with most operators in the world.

Going to just point out that you already posted saying you don't really have any first hand experience. It's already been mentioned that wind is best for people that don't leave the city.

Telus and Bell are the best network choices in Canada if you travel often since they have shared network agreements. The only time I've ever roamed on the network was in northern Ontario which is still better than the 10 hours worth of no service driving on the Rogers network.

After CES, I'm beginning to put some serious thought into LTE and this phone. Dumping AT&T at this point is looking fairly good, as I've loathed their customer service for consistently soft-bricking my older phones due to their inability to properly unlock a phone.
How well does this phone handle roaming, especially in Japan, the UK and Australia? How compatible is the CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev. A. standard? I need to do a lot of travelling to these places and don't want to be short-changed. Does this support UMTS 2100 or international 4G? I plan to use the "buy a prepaid SIM" method.
Or should I be carrying around my unlocked Captivate for roaming?
If you want traveling to Western Europe (like in UK), forget it because GSM rules there. Just notice that the GSM represent 80% of mobile phone market but there is a website you can find the CDMA coverage in the world:

EDIT: About the 4G, a very very very few countries have it but it can be HSPA+ or WIMAX instead of LTE.

But you can't use the 4G Lte in Japon because it doesn't exist (yet).
Anyway, there is one carrier available which support the CDMA in Japan according to the website.

I do know that KDDI supports CDMA2000 and 1xEV-DO Rev. A on the right bands in Japan, so I'm hoping that it's enough. I don't need data roaming that badly, and if its service is comparable to Verizon's EV-DO service, it's good enough.
If youre gonna roam, bring along the captivate.
Or, you can get the droid 2 global, but there's no lte in there lol

I want to buy Galaxy SII duos. It works with CDMA2000. However, I used to go to Hong Kong. I want to use 3G (i.e. WCDMA). Can I root the ROM so that it can works with WCDMA?
Has anyone had any luck unlocking the tmobile optimus t and using it on AT&T?
I haven't done it on AT&T, but I did unlock my Optimus T for use on my regional GSM carrier (iwireless). I don't know how well the cellular data works though since I have a voice only plan. My understanding when doing the research was that the optimus T would work only as a GSM/EDGE phone on AT&T but it wouldn't have 3G.

You'd be better getting the Telus Optimus One from Canada and unlocking it. The shelf price is cheaper than Optimus T which may make up a bit for the import hassles. It has the right 3G frequencies, which is helpful because AT&T has some areas where voice reception is degraded without 3G.

Isn't that only areas without coverage from the 850 band? I live in SoCal and the reception for ATT is generally top notch so I'd like to say I shouldn't have to worry but I'm not sure :\

I don't know, it's just been my experience. For example, from the US/Can border at Blaine Washington down to Bellingham, I got much better reception on a phone with AT&T 3G than on one without.
I heard that in some markets where AT&T used to run EDGE on 850 and 3G on 1900, they swapped it around to get better 3G reception. But as a result (and due to the tower spacing), 2G phones don't do so well in those markets. I forget where I read this though.

Hmm I see. Thanks for the heads up! Luckily, I can get the Optimus T for free so there's not much of a risk. If I remember correctly, my dad had a blackberry pearl on ATT which was not a 3g phone and his reception was fine. Hopefully it'll be the same with the optimus.

No idea. They've also now released it on their subsidiary Koodo for $150 Canadian. And incidentally, At&t themselves is releasing a version called the Phoenix very soon.

I'm from Aus and trying to get a non-savvy US (Cali, splitting time between Sac and SF) friend set up with an unlocked phone suitable for short-term US and overseas use due to travel requirements. The Amaze 4G looks great. I've tried to find answers, but would like some knowledgable eyeballs on my proposal:
1. A US website currently has the Amaze 4G for $479.50 which is much cheaper than all other options. Is this legit? Is there only the X715M model out there, or is this a predecessor?
2. Are all unlocked 'Tmo' Amaze 4G phones able to operate on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 as well as UMTS 1700/2100, both physically and as allowed by the carrier? Any weird APN/data connectivity restrictions due to unlocked phone?
3. Can this phone connect to Tmo at 3G speeds if AWS is unavailable? I read somewhere that 3G 1900 would be required, and this phone doesn't appear to have that?
4. I want to get it on the $30/m walmart/tmo prepaid plan (5G uncapped is plenty of data) but can't see how to order just the sim via their website. should I just have my friend go into walmart? prefer not to muck around with simplemobile if possible - ironically, i want to keep this whole enterprise as simple as possible with a big carrier/theoretically good support.
5. Is this idea, for use in the US primarily but also overseas over the next 12 or so months, future-proof for a couple of years? e.g. I've read about tmo working on HSPA 1900MHz, but hopefully AT&T remains an option if Tmo ends up being unsatisfactory for any reason.

1. 479 sounds legit for phone, i dont know about x715m but i do know that us tmobile version is compatible with all bands networks.
2. Yes all US tmobile amaze 4g operate on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 as well as UMTS 1700/2100, both physically and as allowed by the carrier. As far as apn you would need to set up your apn settings according to the network you are using.
3. If no AWS available then only 2g Edge will work, although I have called tmobile and asked if amaze 4g unlocked will be able to use att's hspa network and they said yes amaze and sg2 are only phones capable of that meaning they were built with future proof in mind. I also seen around that tmobile version has all 3g network bands but not sure myself.
4. Easiest would be to have friend pay and pick up the sim card at walmart but i do remind you it is 30/m- 100 min and 5gb of 4g speeds CAPPED, but 2g edge speeds after the 5gb. Simple mobile is 60/m - unltd talk unlt text and 2gb of 4g speeds capped then 2g edge speeds after just depends on your preference.
5. This is a good idea as att will stil be an option and now that att failed to buy tmobile, att has come to an agreement in a roaming contract with tmobile for 7 years.

Negri said they're on backorder so I went ahead and ordered the phone from an Amazon seller for $500. I can only hope everything's legit - I'm not too sure what the dangers of this option are. My best idea is just to use the phone heavily in the first week after getting it and make sure everything works.
now i just need a "beginners guide to android" to help the friend work through the basics... google time.

nope, i've had a HTC Hero and currently run a SGS2. I bought the Amaze for a friend who's new to Android due to Apple's stupid GSM-only unlocked phones, and their lack of 1.7ghz for tmo.
we'll get through it, tho after 15 mins of googling, there's a distinct lack of good "idiot user's (not programmer's) guide to android" articles/books. will write something up myself, i think.
my response to you above is more fishing for people's ideas about how Amazon sellers can be dodgy, esp. when pretty much every website is still doing the Amaze for $6-700.. I wondered if there were any potential pitfalls with the $500 price.

I bought mine from eBay. It was used for a week with everything and he gave me an Incipio case. I bought it for $445. I was happy with it.

From what i understand, this phone has UMTS/HSPA+ support for 850,1700/2100aws/1900mhz and 2100mhz. Pretty much anywhere in the world that uses those.
I want the 64gb version, will AT&T's HTC One work on T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network??? I get sick speeds on T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network, over 20mb down and 5mb up. After 6 oclock it gets faster. These are not just spiked speeds these are every day speeds all day. I hoping to hell that HTC somehow put T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network in AT&T's as well. Has anyone tried this yet.

Hmm... Good question. I bought both versions (temporarily) to test the two networks (att has tmo beat here in Austin). I'm gonna test switching the sims before i return the tmo one in a couple of days. I'll post the results then, if nobody beats me to it.

Please post your results, only issue the phone might have to be unlocked to work on the others Network, I think. Would love to get my hands on the 64gb version, pissed off T-Mobile just doesn't have it. May have to bite the bullet and buy the 32gb version but still hoping that AT&T's 64gb version is a go on T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network, I know the LTE will work OK it is just the HSPA+ Network that is in question.

I just talked to the HTC tech support dept. today and they mentioned that although on their site, all the speeds are listed for the 64Gb developer edition, the phone will only work on 2G on T-Mobile's network! Yes, that was 2G, not 3G, not UMTS and of course not LTE. I just signed up with AT&T and I get nothing but dropped calls, disconnects, garbled voices, data drops or no data. That happens every day, quite a few times, at different hours of the day. I had wonderful luck with T-Mobile here in Orange County, CA before. I'm selling my HOX+ for an HTC One, but I'll stay with AT&T because of the penalty and the 2-year contract. It's not Europe here... Oh, well.

I can confirm. Att version will not work on Tmo HSPA+. It works on some bands (in some places), but not good enough to think about trying move one phone to the other carrier either way. The Tmo version works a little better on the Att network, but again doesn't support all the correct frequencies. I'm returning the Tmobile version and sticking with the Att one for the better network here in Austin.

So, after selling the HOX+, I got 6 HTC One's thinking it might have been the phone. All 6 of them had the same network issues. So, it's AT&T in my area that has all those problems. I have confirmed with 2 of my friends and my wife and we all have similar problems. Does AT&T work in more than 5 US cities? Wow - nothing but problems. In any event, the HTC One's had crack problems and the On/Off button was very recessed and half of it was inoperable so I returned all of them!!!
I only have problems with att during and immediately after wicked storms.

+1 to this. I have the DNA in hand but unactivated and have heard mixed things from carriers and online. T-Mobile won't really discuss the refarm of their 1700Mhz to 1900/2100. According to information online they have completed a lot of the refarm so that more GSM unlocked devices can run on their high speed data network. A common denominator from each case is that data constantly switches between low and high speeds. I'm thinking of checking out straight talk or net10 although I've heard negative things about them both and simple mobile. Still looking for a great review of this phone on one of these carriers.

Do it, its fine. Mine has never seen a day of service on Verizon, I use T-Mobile and get H+ all over the place. The fluctuating does occur as they're still refarming towers but it doesn't cause much of a problem.
The refarm isn't for more devices its to move the bands down and use LTE on the 2100 or whatever band instead. It just happens to mean non T-Mobile or pentaband phones gain 3g/H+ ability on their network. Just means phones like the DNA without the higher band support gain faster speeds, or I guess I phones will to, whatever doesn't use the higher bands from at&t networks.

The refarm isn't for more devices its to move the bands down and use LTE on the 2100 or whatever band instead. When I said "more devices" I meant the handsets that are only 1900/2100 capable and not 1700 capable. The former is supported by more devices hence "more devices"
It depends on your carrier. On most carriers, like AT&T, it works fine and dandy, on the other hand with carriers like t mobile, it's complicated

complicated meaning what exactly...can you be more specific. Somebody chimed in and said HSPA+ is indeed working on their DNA on T-Mobile. The coverage obviously varies but do you have any information that would suggest it wouldn't work on T-Mobile?
