Flashing ROM help - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi im new in this flashing ROMS stuff
i knew all abouth iphones, but in android world im clue less XD
so i resently got a vibrant and it was stock
so my friend showd me how to flash it
and i flashed ICS passion V8 on it
i like it but my battery life its like 5 hour
and all the apps keep crashing.
so i tried to flash bionix on it and it aborted the instalation, and said something about update files missing, then i tried to flash simply hunny on it, and it flashed and it instals but when i apply it and it starts to boot up
it get stuck in a really weird screen, its like all distortioned.
eany help on this?

The easiest way to leave ICS would be to use Odin and go back to stock and then flash the rom you would like. There is a stick called the Vibrant Bible that will provide the detaiols of odin if you have not used it before. Odin would been needed since the file formats for ICS is different from Bionix and SH and this is the easiest way to fix that. Also if you do go to SH after Odin, make sure you flash the gingerbread boot loaders or you will get the rainbow effects in the startup and rom.
Hope that helps.
Also, running passion should not have that bad of a battery life. Did you calibrate the battery and see if anything is keeping the phone awake? I'm using Passion V8 and easily have double your battery life. Install cpuspy and see if the phone is going into a deep sleep. If not many people have issues with the media server keeping the phone awake which may be the problem in your case as well. Otherwise, Passion should be running fine.

You can just download the AIO toolbox. It has Odin, Sammy drivers and stock pit/tar files too.

Ill chek that out thanks a lot for the help

If it's force closures, you can try going into the advanced menu in recovery and fix permissions after you flash the new rom.

[Q] Did I Just Experience Kernel Panic?

Was originally typing this in the Nero thread but didnt wana add clutter..
Ok, so I've been running Nero with voodoo enabled for a little over a week with no issue. ROM was smooth and battery life was solid. Then yesterday for the sake of a little more battery life I disabled voodoo and flashed the Super IO kernel to see how it would be in this ROM. Everything was fine for a while but then they phone would freeze everytime I ran GPS Test Plus. Only thing it would respond to was hitting the power button to put it to sleep and from that it would not wake (sleep of death). I proceeded to pull the battery. Immediately after the phone fully booted I began getting endless force closes from what seemed like every single all on the phone. Pretty sure this was kernel panic yes?
So I reflashed the JL5 Voodoo kernel (posted in the Nero OP) thinking that would fix it. the force close storm stopped but the phone was still acting up freezing and still wouldnt wake from sleep. I decided then backup, factory reset, wipe cach and dalvik cache, and reflash Nero. I thought all was well but to my surprise after being on the charger all night I arrive to work to find that my battery was at 74% O_O. This is shocking due to the fact that the phone had only been off the charger for about 45 minutes and had not been used AT ALL during that time.
So my question is... Did I just have a bad flash or did flashing the Super IO kernel do some unseen damage? Checked the battery info in Spare Parts and nothing looked out of order.
I would recommend, going back to stock and reflashing nero 3 and retrying the Super IO kernel. Hope that fixes the problem.
Will do when I get home. I assume this will unroot me, right?
I remember a post from Eugene on his site that the super io kernel works best when it is flashed with a rom before that rom is booted for the first time. If you're going back to the super io kernel, you should flash your rom, then flash the kernel before your first boot. It was something about how the kernel syncs with the rom, flashing it as an after thought can cause issues.

Thats weird because I flashed super io over R14 when he first released it and had no problem -_-
Same thing happens to me when i touch Eugenes work. Thought I was the only one

I was only successful with Super IO when I flashed it after a clean rom install. It sucks, but........
This is interesting, I experienced the same type of battery loss upon flashing Nero V3 for the first time. But, I did not flash eugenes super io kernel. I just stuck with the JL5. Although, Once I did a good recondition on my battery, Things seem to be much better. I'm a stickler when it comes to battery life though lol. Whens the last time you reconditioned the battery and wiped the stats via recovery?
I wipe the stats after every flash. I don't recondition unless the battery meter is trippin because I use 3 different batteries. 2 of which are knockoffs but they last about the same as the original. I factory reset, wiped caches again and then flashed the latest Axura. To my surprise after flashes and restoring data I booted into recovery to find the jl5 voodoo kernel was still there.. so I flashed Eugene's eb-productions stock kernel and everything seems to be fine.
What happened with the fc storm WAS kernel panic right?
I spoke too soon. Battery is still draining like a mofo and now I know why. Checked spare parts battery history and it reports that the phone wont go to sleep. Ill have to try to Odin back to stock when I get home
I have a few questions though because I've never done this before.
1. I downloaded Eugene_E2_JK2 from the Bible. Is that one fine or should I flash back to a stock 2.1 ROM
?
2. Will this process unroot my phone?
3. How is flashing the stock rom with odin any different than doing a factory reset and flashing with clockwork? I'm just worried that since flashing in clockwork didn't work odin wont either.
Vibrant via XDA App
So I odin back to JK2 then flashed a fresh installation of the latest Axura. Everything went fine as far as the flashing but after first boot I went back into recovery and i think the voodoo kernel from nero was active because I had the red letters and an option to enable voodoo O_O. WTF? I disabled voodoo before i did odin. I'm pretty sure Axura doesnt come with the voodoo kernel so how it was there after i came from stock is beyond me. So I flashed the EB-Productions stock kernel which i have used on Macnut and Axura and gotten great battery life before going to Nero. The battery still seems to be draining faster. Spare Parts reports that the "time spend without sleep" is about 10 minutes less than the phones boot time. I havent touched the phone since it booted so i dont see how thats possible.
I have no idea whats going on... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im about ready to pull my hair out..
Just ODIN back to shipping rom (remember to use pit file and check repartition) It is better to do that everytime you are changing roms with kernel......
What difference would odin to stock 2.1 make over stock 2.2..?

The stock 2.1 is the official t-mobile software as it came from the factory. Any 2.2 we have is leaked, there is no official 2.2 for us yet. Although the 2.2 you said you flashed is as close as we got to a stock froyo rom. Flashing one of the two should get you back to stock, but the 2.1 is accepted the official base by many to start from, square one so to speak. After flashing stock, before any other roms are applied, you shouldn't have the red voodoo cwm anymore.
If you do still have voodoo after flashing stock, search for Eugene's Froyo that doesn't Brick. Flash through odin with the 512 pit file, you will reboot to a recovery that doesn't work, pull your battery, set up odin with either stock 2.1 or leaked 2.2 and the pit file, boot back to download mode, and flash the stock rom, being sure this time to select the repartition check box in odin. This will remove voodoo, and is the fix for times when voodoo goes bad. After this you will be as stock as you can get, and if you need a link to the froyo that doesn't brick, let me know I'll post it.

What's the difference between reconditioning and just wipeing the stats. I've wiped it through clockwork before however what's reconditioning?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Reconditioning is charging your battery fully then letting it run down until the phone turns off then charging it back up again. The purpose is to make the battery reading more accurate if it seems to be inaccurate.
In other news... I odin back to stock 2.2 AGAIN then reloaded Axura. All is well now. Still bugs me though that voodoo was still there after the first odin. Just dont see how that was even possible.
Thanks for all the help!
The latest axura rom comes with the voodoo kernel, so if you flashed it, you will have, or should have, voodoo recovery. That was my point about checking recovery after flashing stock to verify it was removed, if that was what you were trying to do.

[Q] Need Help With Kernel Boot Screen

I bought a T-Mobile Galaxy S T959. When it turns on, it says "Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000", then the screen changes to "Samsung VIBRANT" I reflashed back to stock using odin, but it still shows the same gt-i9000 boot screen.
Does anyone know how to change it back to normal? So far, I have rooted the device, installed clockwork and flashed to the bionix rom, and installed sgs kernel flasher from the market.
I watched some videos online that showed the kernel boot screen changing after flashing a new kernel through sgs kernel flasher, but I dont know much about kernels or which one needs to be flashed.
Does anyone know what needs to be done, or have any ideas I should try?
Thanks
Well theres nothing wrong with that but it seems like it bothers you so which kernel did u used to odin???
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
This is happening because the phone in the past was flashed with an I9000 based kernel. Eugene I beleive used to make some back before we had Froyo. I also had that bootup screen for a while. I don't have it anymore.
I believe I lost it through one of the many kernel flashes I have done. Just flash some of the latest kernels. It MAY clear this issue for you though it really is not an issue.
It is just the wrong picture stuck in some folder on the phone. There is no harm done to your phone nor is there anything wrong or defective with it. The only thing is that it may bother you. If it does bother you, go on a flashing spree and flash some kernels and roms. I think sooner or later you will get rid of it without even trying when you upgrade your ROM/Kernel.
Thank you, I appreciate your replies.
I bought this phone from someone online, so it was like this when I got it. Therefore I am unsure of which roms/kernels were flashed onto it in the past. I have flashed many roms, but those only seem to change the boot animation. The kernel boot screen is staying the same. Like I said, I dont really know much about kernels.
Would there be one which you recommend I try that might fix it?
I know its not really a problem, but for some reason it just annoys me seeing it say gt-i9000 at startup.
My ultimate goal is to be running the latest build of team whiskey's bionix rom. I have no clue which kernel I should flash or that would work with it.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Try the bullet kernel.
http://edtdev.com/forum/topic/86-kernelbullet-1420ghz-4202011/
It is the fastest kernel for the Vibrant to date (1.42Ghz STABLE on most phones, outstanding battery life, all features and tweaks). It also has a custom boot screen which MAY replace your I9000 one. I'm saying MAY because I am not fully sure. In either case it is either the best or one of the best kernels for this phone to date.
As for ROMs, Team Whiskey quit Vibrant development around late February. They have moved on the the Nexus S and G2X so I'm not sure their latest ROM is the best. It's certainly an amazing ROM but there may be more recent ROMS which have more features or speed. Choice is yours.
You may try flashing some Froyo kernels from Eugene. Since his kernels likely introduced the I9000 boot you have now, flashing newer versions MAY get rid of it...who knows. Alternatively, there is another option if you are SET on getting it out.
If you flash with ODIN and also check repartition, I beleive ODIN will WIPE everything off the phone completely. Yes, all backups...everything will be gone but it should in theory also take that I9000 with it. It's a bit more risky than normal ODIN but the choice is there if you are set on it. Try the other options first and if you decide to do a repartition, READ on how to do it properly first.
@}{Alienz}{
Thank you, I tried to flash a few kernels and it seems to me like what you said about the wrong picture being stuck in the phone is what the problem is.
I Re-flashed with Odin and did a re-partition as well, but the image is still there. After rooting and flashing the bullet kernel, it still shows the gt-i9000 screen and then it switches to the bullet screen instead of the vibrant one it used to be.
After trying a few kernels, they all seem to replace the screen after the i9000 kernel screen.
Im going to keep trying to get rid of it, but i wanted to thank you for your response as I am one step further now.
Ah. Dumb-stuck image problem then huh. I thought the kernels would flash it right out. Well...you can ask someone above me about how to get it out.
Go to the EDT dev website. www.edtdev.com and join their IRC. See if a developer there can help you out with getting rid of it.
Also try the Team Whiskey IRC chat. They have more devs and people in their IRC that may be able to help. Their chat is located here:
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=teamwhiskey&uio=d4
I'm sure someone at those IRC chats will help you out.
try flashing the stock "param.lfs" file through odin
Okay I have had this problem and know exactly how to fix it. What happened was whoever had that phone before you flashed an I9000 gingerbread kernel with I9000 gingerbread bootloaders, that's why it shows that every time. Here is what I did to fix it. I don't know if it has to be done this way, this is just how I did it.
Step 1: download both of these files
PDA:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23420259/Eugene_JK2_Froyo.tar.md5
PIT:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23420259/s1_odin_20100512.pit
Step 2: Flash those files through Odin, but make sure you uncheck repartition, as I have read that if you leave it checked while flashing those files you might end up with a hard bricked phone. It will boot straight into recovery after it's finished flashing and will have some errors, that's okay just click reboot system now.
Step 3: Odin back to stock 2.1 like normal.
After you do that and Odin back to stock 2.1 wait like 10 minutes and then flash whatever rom you like. After step 2 though you should be rid of that awful GT-I9000 boot screen. I just Odined back to stock 2.1 to get rid of the broken recovery. I don't think you have to do this.
Let us know if this helped you, so that if it doesn't work someone might have an alternate way to fix it.
Oh also before I forget, I have to give credit where credit is due. Those are files are Eugenes files and I am in no way saying that I developed or had a hand in developing them.

Questions from a Vibrant newb

Hello, all!
I've purchased a vibrant for my wife over the weekend (i'm on sensation), and have several questions.
The guy i bought it from did a hard-reset supposedly, and said that it reverted it back to the stock android build. Seemed weird, but the first thing i did was update it via kies mini to the froyo build. It's been working fine, except for the camera started messing up last night. Going into black screens, showing "camera failed" errors. It also takes some time (2-3 secs of black screen) to process a picture after it has been taken. I don't remember it doing that on the stock build. I did update it to the latest firmware.
Should i root the phone and flash a different rom? (which rom would you recommend?) A short google search revealed a lot of people having slow-downs after the froyo update.
Appreciate your help!
just to follow-up. wife's been having problems with the music player app hanging, then the phone shut down while she was installing something.... i'm going to wipe everything first to see if it helps any, but will end up rooting it and flashing something else, most likely.
Before rooting make sure you odin back to stock 2.1. That should het rid of the problems

Definitely do what the above poster suggested. Go to the development section and get the AIO toolbox. It has everything you need to get back to stock and get you rooted. If your looking for a good stable rom I'd recommend bi-winning v3. Good luck.
thank you, guys! ended up using the aio toolbox, like suggested. smooth sailing
i've put ultimate rom on it for now, see how she likes it. i'll check the bi-winning (lol) one also. anything else that you'd recommend for now? thank you!
WORD OF IMPORTANT CAUTION!!!!
DON'T EVER USE KIES AGAIN OR YOU WILL BRICK THE PHONE!!! THIS IS A GIVEN, YOU JUST GOT LUCKY, BUT ITS LIKE PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE!! And when it corrupts the Primary and Secondary Boot loader files you'll be bricked hard for sure!!!
KIES IS NOTORIOUS FOR BRICKING VIBRANTS, IT DID IT TO MY PHONE AND MANY OTHERS HERE!! I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE FOR ME!!
Odin or Heimdal are the only programs I would use to do restores other than Baywolfs AIO which is very friendly and has the JFD Rom in it and the Mapping Pit file known as the 512.
You could also use Eugenes No brick Froyo using Odin which has the 2E update file in it, so when you root it and Flash CW recovery, and then re-install packages it will give you the 2E green recovery menu you'll need to successfully flash other ROMS in the future you want.

Passion 10.6 to Bionix Nextgen2

Hello,
I'm new to rooting hence I'm asking this question just to be safe.
I had Installed passion 10.6 through this route. Stock-2.1>CM7 Gingerbread>10.6. Every time I just wiped cached and installed the ROM form the zip.
What I want to know is if I changed my kernel?
I was reading on the instructions to install bionix and it was mentioned that one would have to disable the lag fix etc or disable vodoo. Do I need to worry about this or should I just flash bionix rom using the zip?
I'm not even sure my question makes sense. Thanks.
If you're thinking of going from passion to bionix then you should odin back to stock just be safe. If you odin back to stock you shouldn't have worry about the lagfix.
You can check what kernel you have by going to settings->About phone->Kernel Version. (i.e. mine is 3.0.1.5-ICUP ICS-Streamline #1). But if you odin to stock, this won't make a difference as flashing bionix will also flash the new kernel they have with the ROM.
Hope I helped a little.
You have to odin to jfd with re partion checked coming from ics, miui, or cm7. The partions are different on non touch whiz roms

Thanks so much. Learning something new everyday.
Can't help but wonder, why are you flashing back to 2.2?
I so wish I did not have to. My battery wouldn't last on passion 10.6 and GPS wouldn't work. So for the time being I'm trying something else. Will try passion again next week(now that I'm hooked ) but I need a working phone in the next week

Can't install any application on my Vibrant

Hello, at the start i wanted to install some new ICS rom for my Vibrant..i try to root it with one click and i couldn't do that coz i had froyo(2.2update)..so i read some forums and found solution in odin...i used that to turn back to stock eclair where i rooted the phone ...but the problem is that now i can't install any application on the device(i need ROM manager)..i get to android market and ,click on application but nothing is happening, no download at all...than i try to use android injection with apks that i found on the net , but nothing, i always get INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK...so now i am stuck i have: fimware version-2.1 update 1,baseband T959UVJFD, kernel 2.6.29 can you tall me should i do?? thx
Read the guide in my signature on how to install ICS ROMs. It has an update.zip that you can use for CWR.
ROM manager no longer supports 2.1 (Eclair), so that is why you can't see it in the market.
Download the clockwork mod recovery file (update.zip) and save it to the internal storage on the phone. Then reboot into recovery and install packages. Might have to do it twice. Then you'll be in CWM recovery. Install from from there.

FWIW, and this is not a knock on Team Passion (they do excellent work but few updates), but Euphoria is somewhat outdated. There are plenty of ICS ROMs out there that are more up-to-date and when ICS went from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 there were significant code changes that were done. I suggest ICZen, or Slim or CM9.
But if you want to stay on Euphoria (AOKP based), this is from my guide:
If you get the RANDOM OFFSET error.
Don't freak out. This is an ICS security feature (as posted in Passion's FAQ post). All you have to do is pull your battery and boot back into recovery and reflash ICS over itself (just like you did with the initial CM7 bootloop) and it should push through. You may need to do this multiple times. I have read of people having to do it up to 5x. YMMV though.

I suggest you Odin immediately. I fear that the next screen you will see is the Encryption Unsuccessful screen. Make sure you hit repartition in Odin though since you reformatted your system from RFS/Ext4 to MTD when you went to CM7.

If you do get past all of these, but this is unlikely for a normal flash, get either Iczen or chimera.
