[Q] Recover internal Memory date from a Dead Phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i had (still have) a Galaxy s II. it died COMPLETELY, i have important data inside the internal memory.
now i use a Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus, both have internal Memory, even though with my NOTE i don't save important Date in internal memory BUT i have no choice with my beloved Galaxy Nexus.
i started this thread to gather any useful information regarding the internal memory and how to recover it, For me and many people with this fear.
there are accidents that will kill the phone for good, like dropping it the water or falling and braking.
PLEASE don't offer the service center.

Can it be turned on?

COMPLETELY DEAD. it won't go to Recovery nor Downloading mode NOR connects to boot cable.
and the question is if the phone doesn't work at all what should we do?
i'm really afraid of using Galaxy Nexus because i don't know what to do if my phone dies (like Falling and breaking, the way it doen't turn on) and it's not like taking the memory out of the phone like an SD card.

You didn't want to hear it but the only option (to fix it) is to carry it in under warranty. Unless you want an expensive paperweight .

the problem is sometimes the info inside the memory is priceless. in my situation i don't really care about the phone anymore, i'm searching for a solution to get my data back from the internal memory not to fix the phone.

The data can't be recovered if the device is not fixed (especially since it's not on an SD card and you cannot boot into recovery).

Even if you take it to a repair center there is no promise your data wont be wiped in the process. Above poster is right. If it is dead then the info is dead as well.

Is not that truly dead, if it is too important as he says, he can take the chip and send it to the company so they can take the information out.
OP, if it is too important take my suggestion but It will cost a lot of money.
Thanks for all and God bless you.

Of course you can do that, but that's a massive undertaking and would cost you 2 phones.
i am still looking for an solution to recover my data from a dead sgs2 is there a way to do it, even if i have to destroy the phone?
Hi lector007 ,
Did you ever figure out a way to do this?
The exact same thing happened to me and I'm desperate to get all the videos of my daughter off the internal memory.
I just can't beleive that it's not possible.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Internal memory extraction

My GSII is totally broken. It can't even connect to the boot cable.
Anyways
I only need a way to reach the internal memory becausei got some VERY IMPORTANT info and pictures that I need to extract.
HOW CAN I DO IT?
can I extract the hardware?
Wow
Really wow
No one even bothers to give me a answer.
I've had 2 questions and I never got an answer for any of them. What a support. What a support.

First off, understand the fact that you aren't the center of the universe, nor everyone's attention.Help will come eventually.Be patient next time.It can even take days for a proper answer to come.
So,to extract the internal memory is easy. You just have to disassemble the phone and find the "NAND" labeled chip(or so I think, but you'll probably be able to find it).Problem is that, normally,it'll be glued to the mainboard. If you remove it,you destroy any chance of recovering the whole phone.Bigger problem is that, even if you extract it ok,you don't have any equipment that will be able to read it.It's not an SD card that you stick in a reader and do your thing.
So,your best bet is to send the phone for repair and explicitly state that you want your files intact.Ask them to not repair it if they can't preserve your files.
That's all the help I can give you.I hope someone can help more.
Even though you were a bit rough but it's MUCH better than ignoring
I know I'm not Thee priority, but I just had a trip to Turkey and have ALL my pictures in my GS2. I'm nervous and you can see why.
As you can see I live in Iraq and obviously there is no proper service around here and I'm the biggest hope I got.
Either I wait until I go for another trip and take the phone with me to fix it there or to bother you guys here, and I'm sorry for that

Anyway, your best bet is indeed to keep the phone safe until you can get proper service.
But in case someone can offer you better help, could you tell us what exactly happened to the phone?

I had CriskeloRom 32 on my phone and nothing was wrong. I was checking websites while thephone was plugged in to a charger. Suddenly my phone died, the screen went black and didn't turn on. I tried to but it in recovery & downloading mode but it never did. Went to a repairing store they used the boot cable but it didn't even get connected.
The best guess is some hardware thing is broken inside.
My bad luck is I had the 16GB external memory filled with HD videos and I was using the internal memory for the camera. The best moments of my life in antalya/ Turkey with my wife and daughter is saved in this memory.
I was waiting for Galaxy Nexus (I actually ordered one) but after this I'm really afraid of internal memory only phones.
Now I use Galaxy Note

Well,I keep my important files in the external SD,so I avoid possible problems.
Sounds like something got fried inside your phone.Damn thing goes really hot when charging sometimes. And Iraq's hot climate must have finished it off.
So,I'd wait for someone more experienced than me to say something on the topic.I think that what I said still applies though.Samsung service maybe is your only hope...

[Q] i717 Note Bricked and sending in for warranty replacement - Need to get pictures

My i717 was bricked due to faulty screen (not my fault) not sure why the screen has to do with anything turning on, regardless the phone wont turn on at all. AT&T said its covered by warranty and I'm getting a new phone this week. Only problem is now that my phone is bricked, I cant get any of my pictures. I have a lot and some important ones. Is there anyway to recover these photos from the bricked phone. I cant even go into download mode let it alone turn on so solution needs to bypass that. Thanks.
Your screen won't turn on, or your phone won't turn on? If is just the screen, you should still be able to connect to your pc and just copy your pics in the DCIM/camera Folder l folder. Something doesn't sound right about this though. You sure you didn't flash something that you shouldn't have? I've never heard of a phone just up and brick all on its own... Gues it don't matter at this point, just Find it very odd.

Unless the device can be powered on (regardless of screen operation ) and if USB connection is enabled prior to the failure, you will not be able to access the internal EMMC partition on the device.
External storage can of course be removed for access via PC or alternate device.
Ultimately, if the device can be seen by PC when powered, the data can be recovered.
But without power...for the internal board....via USB interface ...you won't be successful.
I suppose it's possible to force power to the mainboard via jumper wires, similar to the riffbox and JTAG methodology.
But of course, that is well beyond my skill set.
Rather than requesting a JTAG or similar repair, you might could contact the same folks that repair the device.
Mobiletechvideos.com
They could certainly tell you if internal access is possible using the forced methods they have perfected for our devices.
That's really all I've got at this point ...g

I had the same issue except it was just a non functioning LCD. I booted the phone into recovery and pulled everything off using ADB. if your phone wont turn on, (like mentioned before) then there's no way to access the internal memory through the phone. You'd need to pull the phone apart, which would void your warranty
Seems like you have good advice on your current situation...but maybe for the future...
Try downloading Dropbox. They have an auto-upload feature that saves images to your dropbox. Could keep a situation like this from happening again.
resesInv but
Thanks for all the advice, the phone did brick up all on its on at&t described it as a faulty screen but the whole phone is bricked. I appreciate the help and responses but looks like I am SOL. Not that I am an alien to the inside of a phone, but if I were to open it up, I'm sure AT&T would void the warranty, costing be 540$. Looks the dropbox idea would be a good idea the for future.
Or even an SD card would be better for your personal media than using internal memory.

Galaxy S3 suddenly died... any way of recovering pics?

Hi everyone,
I'm one of those "lucky" guys whose Galaxy S3 was affected by a sudden and unexplained death.
Despite having a microSD card i had kept around 700 photos in the internal memory, since I didn't think my phone was gonna commit suicide like it did 4 days ago. Since they told me at Samsung technical service that they're gonna probably have to replace the mainboard, that means everything stored in the internal memory will be lost.
Thing is a had performed a CWM backup days before the "incident" so I'm wondering that if when a get the phone repaired from Samsung and root it again, then perform a CWM restore...that would restore my pics. I've read equivocal things looking up Google, some people say CWM (Nandroid) doesnt backup anything from the internal sdcard, others say it backs ur photos up too....
Can anybody shed some light on this, please?

Thanks for answering chubby. I stored my CWM backups in my external microSD card so I'd able to access that data again once rooted. Definitely no chance at all of the pics being somewhere there in the backup?

Ok, cheers mate. I'm really gutted too, it's incredible that such an expensive phone comes with faulty hardware like this.
I think I'm gonna contact Samsung again asking for a compensation or something like that, they should pay up for 3 weeks without phone and the loss of data.

My S3 had all the symptoms of the sudden death problem. It died on overnight charge and would not boot pass the Samsung logo.
Installing the same firmware that was on the phone before it failed did not fix the problem. But... Installing the latest firmware did and allowed the phone to boot normally and I was able to retrieve ALL data from the phone memory. I'm posting this because several people have said that it is not possible to retrieve data from the phone once this problem occurs.
I still intend to leave my phone in for repair but I was at least able to get my data. :good:
I don't think you had actually reached full or half sds. If you had, people were correct that you couldn't flash it.
Before my sds I had several filesystem corruptions which I recovered with backups and rom flashes but these were pre cursars to the actual sds issue.
Everyone should use dropbox auto upload for photos and foldersync for other data as a preventative measure

This may work if your phone is actually recognized by a pc. If not, like mine, I don't think there is a way to recover the internal memory (unless it's possible to remove memory modules and read stuff off of it??)

Samsung Galaxy S3 is not turning on.

Hello experts,
I have Samsung Galaxy S3, I was using messenger then it hanged up and then I restarted my mobile by pressing and holding the power switch. Then Galaxy S3 logo appeared after restart and again hanged up. Then I again restarted the phone, again at the same point it hanged up i.e. at the logo of Galaxy S3. Then I pulled out battery and reinsert it but after this it never started again not even blinked once. I have also checked on another battery.
I went to the mobile repairing shop then he said CMC chip is dead so its circuit will be replaced. Then I went another shop, he said I will flash the device but I don't guarantee about the data (stored in phone storage). I said him that it is not turning on then how will you flash it. He said I will do it yet.
Now, tell me experts that what should I do to get my phone data back? What should I do that it just turned on for some minutes so that I could take my data to SD card. My data is much important. Also tell me how did the shopkeeper say that he will flash the phone even it is not turning on anyhow.
Thank you.

If it's super important, you would've backed it up, right? Everyone I know backups their important data at least 2 times
The other shopkeeper could use a jtag to force the device into download mode (helped me to unbrick a hard bricked s4).
My 2 seconds of Googling brought me to this link.
That's what I'd assume they'd do (that's what I'd do if I was them).
As for the first one, they might be correct, or not. My strongest recommendation is to try the jtag method and if that doesn't work, I will be really surprised if they actually replace the CMC. Usually what they do is just replace the motherboard which you can do at home (there are plenty of motherboards on ebay) however, it's cheaper but your data chips would need to be transfered over to the new motherboard, which is just better to go with the CMC replacement (if they don't replace your mobo, your data is fine, if they do, it's gone with the mobo).
As for the second option regarding your data, unfortunately it's correct. However, it they get into download mode, they can flash a recovery (different partition, meaning your /data partition is safe) like twrp which they can use to make a nandroid backup and then after extracting the backup, flash new rom. Then you can restore the different apps/settings from the twrp backup file (there are plenty of tutorials on the net).
Good luck! If I helped, hit the "thanks" button

What I understand from this, the shopkeeper who is asking me to bring life to the phone, would use jtag? What is jtag and how can I do it at home and what thing like cables, etc do I need for this. Yeah, I can do this at home as I am aware of little bit electronics. Can you tell me which is suited for my Galaxy S3 on EBAY? Can you give the link so that I could buy? And I hope, I would able to transfer chips on the new mobo, just locate the chip for me which is to be transferred. And further I don't understand what do you mean by the line "which is just better to go with the CMC replacement (if they don't replace your mobo, your data is fine, if they do, it's gone with the mobo"

What jtag is etc can be checked out in the link below. What cables you need depend on specifically your device (it might be s3, but there are different variants of the s3).
And yes, normally that would mean that it would be forced into download mode

Regarding the jtag, you can check out this great forum question and answer Keep in mind that jtag doesn't always need a controller, in my case (s4 not s3), I had to create a micro usb connector with a resistor on one of the ends and plug it into the device for it to work again

I don't really know what CMC is, maybe the guy meant SMC? SMC is a common abbreviation used in circuit board repair and stands for System Management Controller so in one word or another, a chip (correct me if I am wrong, I am not super educated in the circuit board area).
I do recommend you use the jtag method since if it doesn't work, at least you can rest a sure you've tried multiple ways to revive it and not sit and wonder after the board repair is complete if there was a more efficient way to solve the issue.

Are you sure you can do it at home? It isn't normal solder, it's more of a ballpoint solder requiring to heat up the board to let the solder flow and then extract the nand chips. I cannot give you link since I don't know specifically what phone you have (you stated s3, but there are plenty of s3 variants such as the s3 lte etc all with different internals).
What I meant by that line is that since the data chips are on the motherboard, replacing the motherboard means losing your data. If they don't replace your motherboard (mobo), your data is intact/fine .
Here the second option you mean, flashing the rom? you said in the bracket the "data partition is safe" means in this method, I can safe my data? OK, I read about twrp as per my understanding, it can get my data back? Right?

Yep, with twrp you can create a backup and extract from that backup apps and whatnot. So technically, your data is safe (you will wipe the phone, but you'll have a backup ). If it's photos that are the issue, you can hope that your sync was on and that you had Google Photos set up (automatically backs up your gallery).
Thank you for answering me, I am a dumb. Thanks for tolerating me.
