Galaxy S3 suddenly died... any way of recovering pics? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm one of those "lucky" guys whose Galaxy S3 was affected by a sudden and unexplained death.
Despite having a microSD card i had kept around 700 photos in the internal memory, since I didn't think my phone was gonna commit suicide like it did 4 days ago. Since they told me at Samsung technical service that they're gonna probably have to replace the mainboard, that means everything stored in the internal memory will be lost.
Thing is a had performed a CWM backup days before the "incident" so I'm wondering that if when a get the phone repaired from Samsung and root it again, then perform a CWM restore...that would restore my pics. I've read equivocal things looking up Google, some people say CWM (Nandroid) doesnt backup anything from the internal sdcard, others say it backs ur photos up too....
Can anybody shed some light on this, please?

Thanks for answering chubby. I stored my CWM backups in my external microSD card so I'd able to access that data again once rooted. Definitely no chance at all of the pics being somewhere there in the backup?

Ok, cheers mate. I'm really gutted too, it's incredible that such an expensive phone comes with faulty hardware like this.
I think I'm gonna contact Samsung again asking for a compensation or something like that, they should pay up for 3 weeks without phone and the loss of data.

When i sent mine off for repair it went as 16GB model and came back as 32gb model so it's worth asking

My S3 had all the symptoms of the sudden death problem. It died on overnight charge and would not boot pass the Samsung logo.
Installing the same firmware that was on the phone before it failed did not fix the problem. But... Installing the latest firmware did and allowed the phone to boot normally and I was able to retrieve ALL data from the phone memory. I'm posting this because several people have said that it is not possible to retrieve data from the phone once this problem occurs.
I still intend to leave my phone in for repair but I was at least able to get my data. :good:

I don't think you had actually reached full or half sds. If you had, people were correct that you couldn't flash it.
Before my sds I had several filesystem corruptions which I recovered with backups and rom flashes but these were pre cursars to the actual sds issue.
Everyone should use dropbox auto upload for photos and foldersync for other data as a preventative measure

This may work if your phone is actually recognized by a pc. If not, like mine, I don't think there is a way to recover the internal memory (unless it's possible to remove memory modules and read stuff off of it??)

[Q] how can i access my nandroid backups with a unresponsive screen?

Last weekend my screen stopped responding to touch.
Anyway, T-mobile was nice enough to send me a new phone for free under warranty. I unfortunately have all my nandroid backups on my internal memory on the old vibrant. Is there any way i can access that on my pc in clockwork recovery mode. Cause i can't do anything when the phone is on besides look at the unlock screen light up for 30 secs. This blows cause i dont want to go through all that time to get my new phone back to the way the old one was.
BTW my old phone was rooted and i had my ld phone heavily customized.
Hopefully somebody can help cause im coming up empty searching for an answer. No one seems to have had this problem yet or i'm not searching for the right words. i only got 2 days to send the old phone back also.

First. Rooting your pho.e automatically voids the warranty.... so you'll likely get charged for the device after a month or two.
Second, boot into recovery. Using adb, execute the following command
Adb pull /emmc/nandroid/
This should pull the entire nand directory and copy it into your sdk\tools directory.. Also know that cross device band restores don't always work so well and you may run into problems. When putting it on your new device, toll have to make a band with the new one and empty all your backups into the new folder, since the device ids will be different...
Hope that helps.

You can run adb pull /sdcard to get the whole internal sdcard. Highly doubt TM does anything they rarely do.
i decided to go w running adb pull /sdcard
its pulling the data now. i choose the command since i realize thats where some photos and other files are saved.
My next plan was to find a way to unroot it through recovery. then mail that thing back and no harm done.

You said it was saved on internal storage.... if its on the sdcard, no need for adb. Use the same card in the new device.

No it was the phones internal storage you know the internal 16gb of space.
Anyway i got all my data off of there. Thanks a ton. This post should help others as well. it was stupid easy if you understand basic terminal commands.
I got my new vibrant like my old 1 in about 10mins. I'm so happy now.
Oh btw, the t-mobile rep. Stated that if they find anything that looks like the phone was altered in anyway that would void the warranty. They would charge me a max of $100. If that happens it would suck, but not as bad as the full vibrant price.
I think I'm going to get the insurance on this new phone now.

[Q] Recover internal Memory date from a Dead Phone

i had (still have) a Galaxy s II. it died COMPLETELY, i have important data inside the internal memory.
now i use a Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus, both have internal Memory, even though with my NOTE i don't save important Date in internal memory BUT i have no choice with my beloved Galaxy Nexus.
i started this thread to gather any useful information regarding the internal memory and how to recover it, For me and many people with this fear.
there are accidents that will kill the phone for good, like dropping it the water or falling and braking.
PLEASE don't offer the service center.

COMPLETELY DEAD. it won't go to Recovery nor Downloading mode NOR connects to boot cable.
and the question is if the phone doesn't work at all what should we do?
i'm really afraid of using Galaxy Nexus because i don't know what to do if my phone dies (like Falling and breaking, the way it doen't turn on) and it's not like taking the memory out of the phone like an SD card.

You didn't want to hear it but the only option (to fix it) is to carry it in under warranty. Unless you want an expensive paperweight .

The data can't be recovered if the device is not fixed (especially since it's not on an SD card and you cannot boot into recovery).
Even if you take it to a repair center there is no promise your data wont be wiped in the process. Above poster is right. If it is dead then the info is dead as well.

Is not that truly dead, if it is too important as he says, he can take the chip and send it to the company so they can take the information out.
OP, if it is too important take my suggestion but It will cost a lot of money.
Thanks for all and God bless you.

Then it may not be you efs folder (IMEI!) becoming corrupted after all! Try cleaning the contacts on your sim & inside your phone & make sure none of the pins are bent or broken internally also, then try somebody elses sim card in your phone first before replacing your own! If your sim works in another phone then it's got to be something to do with the contacts/pins, as you haven't flashed your phone or anything to corrupt stuff in the first place!!

Annoyed with Android
I have the exact same symptoms except I did not play around with any software updates or “internal settings”. The memory on my phone was filled with photos I took over the weekend and some apps refused to start up because of the lack of memory. Probably the mistake, I took the SD card out to try to read it from my Win 7 notebook, because the “Gallery App” did not want to open to allow me to delete of some images to free up memory. (Well why not, most other equipment allow their SD cards to be read by Windows.)
Whatever the reason the phone is completely stuffed; the SD card is not recognised and that result in no phone connection!! The phone can't be used. This is absolutely ludicrous. One cannot sell equipment that can be made unusable this easily. I can understand maybe losing image/data on the SD card if I took it out, but now the entire phone is useless, and it seems (from other forums too) that it is quite a process to get the so-called IEMI folder back. I am really frustrated at this point and have a real annoyance with Android. Judging from the amount of hits returned after a Google search, this SD card problem is a fairly common one. I am not going to fix this; will rather get a new phone, one that works, and it will not be an Android phone. Yes I know hardcore Andriod followers will be all over my post, but just think a bit, this kind of problem should not happen and is really nonsense
(PS: People that moan about multiple postings, can't you just answer the question, even if there is another similar thread, do you have to nit pick on everything.)

- There no need for you to threaten anyone. If you are not going to buy Android device again, million more people will still buy it.

Apologies for the double messages. I tried to fix it numerous times, but it does not seem to take effect.
Jokesy, the fact people don’t get paid for commenting here is completely irrelevant; I also have a day job and don’t have 6 hours in the evening to get a phone to make a call. Pointing out severe problems with a product is not spamming.

Interesting...
I am in a similar situation with a t989 phone that doesn´t recognize my simcards.
Some days ago I tried to upgrade my phone to the latest official ICS using ODIN as KIES
was always giving disconnection errors before finishing the upgrade.
Finally I got my phone stuck at the download mode with an error message and a yellow warning triangle.
I thought I had a bricked phone, but fortunately I managed to recover it using an old
official ROM. The problems is that now it doesn´t recognize any simcard inserted.
The current installed software versions are:
Android 2.3.5
Base band: T989UVKID
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Compilation number: GINGERBREAD.UVKID

[Q] HELP! - S3 killed SanDisk 32gb Ultra Micro-SD

Hi guys
I know about the SanDisk Micro-SD card problem with Samsung Galaxy S3's and I happen to be one of the victims.
My SanDisk Micro-SD 32gb Ultra has had problems in the past. It sometimes says blank sd card but it eventually works again. At one point it said sd card damaged but the card still worked. Up until yesterday it hasn't stopped working for a while but now my phone says blank sd card. I tried putting it into a windows computer but it cannot be detected. When using a usb adapter it just shows a device in drive "?:" and can't do anything with it and when using a micro sd to sd card reader it doesn't show at all. In Mac the micro sd to sd card reader is detectable and shows the size of 32.1 MB and is called "Apple SDXC Reader Media". The micro sd card itself is not detectable it seems. I have tried many device recovery software but none of them work. They all seem to just be scanning the card reader and not the micro sd itself.
Does anyone know how I can recover the Micro-SD card?
It is quite important because I have my school laptop data backed up on it (which was just handed in for a system upgrade and being wiped) and also my phone pictures, videos and other stuff.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

It may be recoverable by a specialist company, But i believe the going rate is approx £900. My first step would be to try sticking it in the freezer for at least 8 hours (but as long as you can manage the longer the better) then try it in your phone, if this works back up all the data and RMA the card to SanDisk. Let this be a lesson to us all that all data on our cards should be backed up regularly, I understand you werent expecting the card to fail but had you lost your phone the result would have been the same.
I doubt you will be able to recovery the data, formatting the card with the sd formatting tool might make the card useable again but I doubt it. When I've had cards corrupt more than once it is best to throw them away and get a different make.
You can try looking for a specialist data recovery expert, locally or on the web - if the data is very valuable to you.

First of all I don't have £900 to throw around, besides the fact it totally isn't worth £900 to get it fixed.
Second, before I start chucking my SD card in the freezer what exactly does freezing it do and how will it help it? You sure it won't just destroy it for good? I can leave it in the freezer for as long as needed as I can't exactly use the card in the mean time.
Thanks for the reply though
Hope I can get it to work
Freezing is a method that may give a brief recovery on some hard disc failures .
Note hard disc never heard of freezing ram or why it could work .

Not a lot.Contact retailer, or SanDisk direct for a replacement card and chalk it down to experience.
This is a known issue with sandisk at the moment. They are replacing cards when they die.
As for data, please look into foldersync for future. Sync data to cloud or computer

Ok then I'll just have to get it replaced.
A thought just occurred to me though.
Before I had my school laptop backed up on my micro-sd card I had it backed up on a usb. Because it was only an 8gb usb I transfered it to my micro sd because it took up too much space. I've heard of software that can recover deleted files from devices. Would it be possible to recover the deleted backup on my usb? The backup in total would have been about 1 - 2gb. If so, what free program could I use to recover it?
Thanks in advance
Possibly. As an IT support engineer, I don't want to get your hopes up though.
Things like NTFS get back may work but most if them are not free.
I took Handy recovery 1 (free version) from a bootable cd tool once, you could try that and may recover a small amount of data but its always safest to assume it gone.
The more you use the usb device, the less chance you have of recovery

If nothing works then I may take it to my school IT guys (when school starts again, currently holidays)
Think they would have something to fix the card or recover the data?
It depends on the state.
The media has a File System. This could be FAT32, NTFS, exFAT etc. Essentially (without going technical) imagine these file systems as a database table. When you add a file to the media, an entry is written to the table to identify the exact location of the file on the media. That way, when an operating system views the card and the user accesses a file, the table tells the OS where to look for the file.
Typically with these file systems, when you delete the file, the file remains. Only the Table entry is removed. The OS can no longer locate the file. the OS is shown the free space as per what the table says - not what is really the truth.
So once a file is deleted, 3rd party applications can scan the media and find the files (without using the table).
Of course there is a problem in that any space that the table shows as unallocated (you deleted the file), new files will overwrite the old files. That is when the data becomes unrecoverable.
So yes, it's possible that even if the formatted filesystem is damaged, the data on the media can be recovered. But if you added new files since, then the chances are the unreferenced data has been actually overwritten. In this case, it is gone.

What file system are you taking about here? The damaged file system (micro-sd card) can't have new files added to it as it is inaccessible. It also has not been formatted since the problem. The usb with the deleted files is not damaged and not formatted but I have put new files on it since. Sounds like you're combining the two different devices. Sorry if this is a bit confusing.

Both; I am answering the question for both devices at once. I'm not confused

Ok. I thunk I'm da confused one
Anyway, so basically you're saying that it is possible for the IT guys at my school to fix the micro sd card and recover its data right? I don't think I'm going to bother trying to recover the deleted one on my usb.

The s3 doesn't play very well with sandisk cards in general (samsung confirmed this) . I personally use a pny and have no issues, I would suggest trying to return the card and get a different brand.

16 GB SD Card Backup Fail

I'm sorry if I missed this in the million of threads I've read over the last week, and I'm pretty sure I haven't so just a quick question:
Is anyone else having problems doing a nandroid backup on their SD card? I have a (sort of) brand new one I got last year for my old phone, but never used and when I got my S4 a month ago, I wanted to start fresh (kept old SD card if I needed pics/videos etc from it) and use the one I had last year that had NEVER been used yet (since of course, phone doesn't come with one anymore these days).
The 4 times I've attempted to backup on SD card, It fails at the end. Always successful on phone memory backup though. I have yet to test another SD card to see if somehow mine is bad. (holding on spending money if I'm not alone here).
Also wanted to ask this to see if maybe it's TWRP's latest (2.5.0.2) recovery so if it's that, I can let them know. I had CWM on here also, But unfortunately I can't remember if it was successful on that either (I don't think it was, which is now making me thing it might actually be the SD card, which sucks cause it has been never used)
Much appreciated thanks! If I missed any information on this, ask away!
BUMP
What kind of card is it?
I would try cwm. Pretty much no issues with it.
