So, I have (for now) my OG Droid still. Is there a way to correctly tether the tablet to the phone? Would I just run WiFi Tether (I have this on my phone as it is rooted) on my phone and then tell the tablet to try to find my phone as a wifi source?
Yes that's exactly right
I was able to tethe via PDAnet, which is a bluetooth tether.. no root required.
Yep that's what I'm doing with my Desire and Transformer.
wifi tether or barnacle works fine tethering to prime.

How did you do this. Version 3.0.2 on both, or did you go with the PDAnet Beta version for tablets?
---------- Post added at 11:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:41 AM ----------
This was "not" as easy as I thought it would be. To the point, I did get HTC Evo 4G (rooted) with Wireless Tether to work across all applications with the Prime.
PDAnet (beta flavor for tablets) will work but is limited to GMail, Browser and a few other things.
Now my problem. I work on saturday and like to watch football through my SlingBox. When I use my laptop with PDAnet v3.0.2 and my Sprint Evo 4G, I get "high definition", no problems.
When I do Wireless Tether from my Prime to my Evo 4G, running my SlingBox, I only get standard definition. Ug...I need a faster link. I was hoping I could use the USB in the dock to connect to my Sprint Evo 4G, then use PDAnet on both the phone and Prime to get a better speed. So far, no luck.
Any Suggestions?

Join the ranks of countless of people having the same issue, there are many phones that do not work, mainly because of ad-hoc, do a search in the forums and you can read more on it, basically until we get root is not going to work.
Can you not tether via bluetooth (using "wireless tether for root users")?
i know some phones can tether via BT others can't, maybe yours can try it and see, i know my epic doesn't do BT.
Yes I have a epic and it rooted with a 2.2 rom. My archos is not connecting to the my phone but my epic saids paired...I was wondering if I could buy a 3g usb modern for the archos cuz I want to use my archos in my car..

The Archos would likely power the 3G USB modem, but without drivers on the Archos to run the modem, you'll get nothing.
Remember, this is a computer, and like any other computer, just because you can plug something in does not mean it will work. The two devices have to know how to talk to each other (drivers / API).
It is the same thing with the wireless and bluetooth tethering, and there are distinct differences between infrastructure mode and ad-hoc mode in those communication technologies.

Yes there is a difference. The hot spot uses infrastructure mode while the tethering uses adhoc. Most Android devices do not support adhoc.

I posted a version of wifi tether that works for me. Could you guys let me know if it works for others, it could be a fix for the android tethering issues across the board (remember this is to be installed on your phone)

FWIW I have been able to get BT tether on my Hero (CyanogenMod) working though a tad finicky. I seem to have to pair, disconnect and restart tether on the phone, pair and it works. It always pairs but fails to work (no internet) that first time.
Also i believe there is a version of wireless tether for root that does infrastructure mode wifi.

I have a stock Sprint EPIC. I installed easy tether and successfully USB tethered from my Win7 laptop. That was kinda cool.
My ultimate goal would be to use my Epic with a Viewsonic for 3g/4g access when wi fi is not available.
From what I understand in this forum a ROOTED Epic is MANDATORY.
Please tell me I'm wrong!
I'm so close to buying gtab, but I HAVE to be able to get 3g/4g access or the tablet situation won't work for me, sadly.
I don't get the technical aspect of having to root the Epic to tether with the tablet. Can someone explain? Does it have to do with no drivers for the Android gtab side of the process?
Thanks
I'm trying to do the same thing with a Droid Incredible, either wirelessly, or through the USB. So far, it looks like your phone needs to be rooted. I think the phone companies sell the phones so this ability is blocked, otherwise they would lose out on the extra $20 mobile network fee Verizon nails you with.
Your phone has to be rooted to use the wireless tether apps. Your Gtab also has to have an ad-hoc fix. The best way to do this is to either install a custom rom or the performance pack for the 3389 update. As far as I know there is no way to usb tether your GTab to an android phone.
not needed to rooted
I am currently using pdanet to tether. it is free from the play store and your phone doesnt have to be rooted.
PDAnet is good but is slower than direct tether. use Z4root on the phone then instal barnacle WiFi tether from the market. Its fast and connects to anything. I use it to connect my Xbox 360 to play online and to steam Netflix on my PC and Gtablet when the free WiFi where I live is bogged down by traffic.
Will I be able to Tether from my EVO when I get the USB adapter for the 10.1? EVO currently works with other computers.
I've been tethering wireless to my EVO since I took the Sammy out of the box. Rooted, Wifi Tether. Not sure about hard connection

I'm currently having a problem with my rooted EVO's wireless tether (frustrating) but the wired tether is working. Just not sure if it will work on the 10.1 when the backordered USB adapter arrives. Thanks for your info.
I would doubt it.. but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about
Follow the instruction from this thread and it will work. I did it on my SGT and it worked great.

would tethering work using a vibrant? i read some where that it would but am unable to find any info. getting my tab in the morning.
I know there have been posts in regard to this issue.
Wireless tether -- no go
Wifi Tether -- 4g only
Native Hotspot -- 3g only
The only Native Hotspot that I have ever gotten to work is with the Sprint Lovers ROM on the OG evo on Froyo only. I have tried the new SL ROM on GB and only 3g works. After reading this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172576 I may now know why 4g on Native doesnt work on the the 3d or OG evo. Was wondering if someone could incorporate the SL ROM "Wireless Hotspot" to the 3d and possibly the OG evo.
Thx

Wifi tether - only one that works for 4g, but gives me 3g speeds to the connected computer.. anyone experiencing similar issues?
I dont know if this will help ya but i use Barnacle...it does 3g and 4g and works great.
Barnacle is fine, however, it doesnt switch between 3g and 4g unless u manually adjust the software. I drive a cab for a living, so when i drive in and out of 4g, Barnacle doesnt switch like "wireless tether" for the OG evo or the "wireless hotspot" for the EVO on Sprint Lovers Rom 3.70 Froyo.

Roms
I've found that Virusrom successfully unlocked the built in wireless and wired tethering abilities. I haven't tested the 4g with it though.
I tried synergy nightly and also Virusrom with the wireless tether app, neither of them seem to work, only the sprint hotspot.
Has anyone found any other roms that have unlocked the build in tethering services?

You could also try clockwork mod tether. I don't know how well it works personally, but I've heard good things
Just use one of the wifi tether apps like pdanet or easytether. works great for me.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I actually do have EZ-Tether and use it with my laptop when necessary. But I also need a wireless option when I pass internet connectivity to an RTK GPS survey controller from my work supplied DINC2. Since its a work phone, rooting/romming isn't an available option.
The old hack method let me run under the radar on several fronts if you know what I mean. I just wanted to find out if the old hack was still available before trading up to the Inc4G.
:good:
looks like the FCC just ruled that they can't charge for tethering so maybe you can just use the built in option.
Not sure how verizon is going to change due to this ruling.
They will still get you on data usage

No (according to the article I read) Verizon also agreed not charge for tethering. The article however said that this would only apply to 4G non-unlimited plans which is the case now anyways I believe. I did not see anything that specifically said they can't charge it for unlimited or 3g accounts but I guess they prob still will
it's so weird actually using the verizon mobile hotspot lol.

me too at first, did you get rid of the unlimteed data, and on a shared everything?
if so u get the free mobile data, i just opened it and pressed it and it worked.
it didnt at first but that was because initially i kept my unlimted plan (when i didnt want to) and the guy screwed up (good thing I happened to have called CS)
it saves our family of 4 smart phones 80$ a MONTH!!!
I don't ever need unlimited, I pay for wifi at my house so I take advantage of that and the batt savings.
only use 4g when needed.
I finally moved the cable modem into my room the wifi crappy netgear wifi thing for my desktop blows!
if for vista, i upgraded to wiindows 7, that was a fiasco, then i upgrade my comp from 2GB RAM to 6.5GB and apparaently anything over $GB the wifi wont work.
took me all day of google searching to find the hacked code.
i even to this day have to start my computer a special way to disable signature something to get the wifi to work, happy dont have to do that crap anymore. lol

The FoxFi with proxy addon works well, but it it's limited to http/https protocols, and your device that you are tethering must have an option to set up proxy settings. If you need other protocols, you will need a USB tether option.

So far I've gotten Open Garden to work between my incredible 4g, my Asus EeePC, and my Toshiba thrive tablet. It's a pretty cool app, and it's evolving. There are limitations.
Currently it uses Bluetooth, and they are planning on supporting WiFi. If your using it on a PC it only works with the browser (I've used it with Firefox). When first connecting my Asus to my Incredible it wasn't taking. I messed around with it, and added my tablet and then they all connected. After the first connection it now automatically connects if the app is running on both devices.

Tried the old hack as soon as I got the phone. Unfortunately, it does not work.
Connectify is another option (if you have the right hardware), never gave me a bsod. People probably get it because they have the wrong hardware. I had the right hardware and had to do this when I had a Rooted Motorola Droid/Milestone (which is in the garbage since it broke), cause it's wifi tether was ad-hoc only. (Still never failed me)
