Lag fix? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi, I am coming from a galaxy s 2 because the photon had an HDMI port on the side and the gs2 didnt have ICS so i was like I mind as well get the photon and wait for the next big thing. Now that I have it, this sucker is annoying when it comes to speed and the lag factor. When scrolling through a dark application, why does the pix fade away a little and then returns to normal look when you stop scrolling. I notice this mostly on black apps but mainly all over the device. Is there not a lag fix? or is this pentile display really that bad?
I would appreciate if someone could help me out
Update: Thanks all. I got rid of the photon and got the galaxy s 2 epic 4g tough back. Couldn't take it. Thanks again to all who replied.

I've never seen that, but I hate dark apps. Got an actual example?

A prime example and the ability for others to repeat it would be helpful.

Just looked at your video it its a rendering issue. Going to try and replicate it.
Not sure but check your launcher and see if it has and rendering options.. From your video it almost looks like frame tearing.
---------- Post added at 05:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:09 PM ----------
Try shutting off auto brightness. I think that May help with some of your rendering.

nope no options for that and auto-brightness being turned off doesnt do anything. Thanks for trying to help

Closest I can get is doing ##data# scrolling sideways.. I don't have any tearing but I do notice the text does dim a little when it is in motion but brightens back up once I stop..
Can't seem to fully replicate due to differences.. Post your phone info, ROM, launcher etc.
I am using 198_7 joker locked 4G ROM using the zeam launcher. I suppose more info about your phone would she's a little more light into diagnosing.

well the launcher may also be an issue but it's the stock launcher and stock rom..no root etc. The tearing as you say happening all over the device when scrolling... it also did this on the droid x 2.. i think it's motorola and them not focusing on the smoothness even though quadrant scores well. My stats are below for the phone

happens to me, I would think it has something to do with battery life. the more you refresh the screen.......weak, but makes sense!

There's definitely something weird there. That aint right.
One question is, your launcher has five icons but all the Photons I've seen have only four. Is that a setting somewhere that I've just never noticed or is that not stock?
Edit:
I see you're on 198_7. Can someone else on that build confirm this issue? It doesn't exist on 198_6. Maybe a bad flash or just not-quite-ready yet?

I have noticed this issue since day one but I think my eyes have just gotten used to it.

Ok, I made a thread about frame/graphics issues happen on 198_7. Since, I've switch back to stock 198_6 not one issue... I think I and you might just have gotten a bad download.....

I was playing with GoLauncher EX today and got that exact scrolling issue.

Hes on the ICS build I believe thats why his launcher looks different, If he's not on ics he's using ics launcher. I'm using twicca as well and I know what you're talking about but I dont notice it much anymore. It has something to do with the pentile display as you can see it handles brights very well but black isn't its strong point. The galaxy phones handle black's better than any phone their screens produce deep rich black colors. Perfect example is to watch a scary movie on both phones like paranormal activity and you'll see how the photon sucks for dark scenes because of how the pentile displays its blacks.

Are you getting random reboots as well? Starting to think I should have kept my EVO 3D.
Had one yesterday...but pretty sure it was an app that caused it. If you are getting frequent reboots try a factory reset, then add apps in small clusters. If you find an issue, and it's app related it will be easier to pinpoint.
oh...wait, my *MP all have the glossy effect...are you saying your M doesn't? (sorry misread your post )
That's cool. I'll try that. Also do you know of there is any word on a fix for the random audio and extreme lag. I love this phone but it has some issues ATM.
Yeah the M isn't glossy.
oh that is strange...mine isn't like that at all. Since you're experiencing other issues, take it back for a new one. Better off safe.

[Q] Touch Screen Glitch/Stutter/Unresponsive and other issues

Hello,
I just got my wife the Photon 4g for her upgrade (she came from a blackberry curve). Since purchasing just under a week ago we've noticed problems. Sometimes the touch screen will not respond to touch inputs, or it is very laggy to respond. A quick screen on/off using the power button (not a phone restart) toggle usually fixes the problem, and then its quick and snappy like you'd expect from a 1GHz dual core. It is also pretty intermittent though very frustrating for her. I've been searching around but haven't found anybody having a similar issue.
What I want to know is if this is a normal glitch and if there is a fix for it. Or, if it is something with the phone and we should replace it. I personally am getting the Epic 4G Touch on Monday, and based on its reviews, I'm tempted to just get her the same phone too.
The photon has been proving to have some other odd things going on as well. We've also been having some pretty bad battery life. I did a system restore and put on juice defender which seemed to help a lot. But, nothing has fixed the screen glitch/stutter problem.
Oh, one other thing I've noticed with the Photon, using Pandora the audio seems to stutter as well when moving between windows. I've done some searching on this and found it to be a pretty common problem. I don't understand how this phone has had so many great reviews with such obvious flaws. Seems very unpolished IMHO. My wife loved her BB, it was simple, stable, and had awesome battery life. Granted, not as fun, and no cool apps like Android. I just want her Android experience to be as good as possible.
Any input/advice?
Kinda sounds like bad hardware. After completing the startup process my Photon is never laggy, at least nothing that can't be attributed to specific apps. My battery life is easily a full day, even with regular use.
Pandora just sucks performance-wise; try another media streamer and see what happens.
I'd say hard reset, do all the OTA updates and see what that does. If not improved maybe swap it out. It should be better than that.
Try changing you vm heap higher to get rid if the stutter
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Well we are going to go to the store tomorrow and see about a E4GT SGII for her tomorrow, or at the very least trade in for another Photon.
On a side note, does anybody know why they put the usb on the side which renders the kickstand unusable? Seems kinda dumb to me, if you want to use the kickstand and charge at the same time you are SOL. (sorry for the rant LOL) a bit of an oversight I think.

[Q] My Choppy/Laggy/Buggy Note issues

Ok I got my Gnote yesterday at BestBuy(upgraded from my skyrocket). When I got home to play with it it seemed to drag a$$ and was pretty choppy, almost like it was pushing it limits on memory or something. I restarted the phone but no help. Next I downloaded golauncher thinking it would help but no luck.
I’ve also noticed that whenever I select wallpaper it zooms all the way in on the pic (which looks like crap) and it doesn’t scroll. I’ve tried everything. Help me XDA
I hope there’s a simple fix for all these issues my phone is having. My skyrocket was flawless. Hell my infuse don’t seem too bad now.
Video quality isn’t that great either. What gives Samsung?????
I was able to get better wallpaper using zedge on the market. It doesnt zoom in like selecting from folder.

Actually read other reviews before inferring that all notes have performance comparable to yours - mine is hardcore fast. No lag, no stutters, no nothing but performance. Download some appstore apps to monitor background processes and see if there is a rogue something running. That, or you may have a faulty device.
Coming from an Atrix, SGS2, Skyrocket, Droid Razr, and International Galaxy Note this is the smoothest phone I've ever owned. Only issue I have is getting calendar to sync with Google calendars.

Actually my note is kinda "laggy, sluggish, choppy" as well. I'm kind of a sad man right now, I still LOVE this thing but it's performance is not all that great at the moment for me.
Not entirely sure why either...I tried a few launcher none make it better and some make it worse.

Same here. very dissapointed. Its slower than my infuse, but then my infuse is running a custom rom.
Worst example by far is the market. load it up and scroll up and down, soooo choppy and laggy. starting to think I might have made a mistake not getting the international. I'm really surprized.
I'm sure once I overclock it and toss launcher pro on it I will be happier, I'm just really surprized that I have to do that.

Really strange. I am completely stock right now with all the bloat still installed, microbes live wallpaper, and I just tried this in the market and get no lag whatsoever.
I went to the AT&T store and the Note was laggy. I killed background tasks, eliminated widgets, removed bloatware... nothing
I really like the screen size + google maps navigation but I'm not good at rooting so I've gotta see if this lag stuff continues on stock before taking the plunge.
Hmm :/ I'll take a video of it tomorrow. All power saving options are off, nothing much running in the background. Maybe I should take it into an ATT store and compare it side by side to the ones on display.
I'm glad most others aren't having this problem, that means its something that can get fixed or replaced rather than just being an underpowered processor for the resolution of the screen.
Its a new device with a new processor... Its funny to me how much people are seriously complaining and stressing about "lag". You guys do know the international one had a bunch of "lag" when it came out right? I'm absolutely willing to do all of that, and I will, but going from a captivate, to an infuse, to this, and having it be the slowest out of the box when the other two were single core just strikes me as not right. And with others stating that they don't have this issue, makes me think there must be something going on here. Before I mask the problem with the OC kernel and a new launcher I'd rather know that there isn't something wrong with my specific note.
Glad the lag doesn't bother you

qhd screen ghosting?

just curious if anyone has noticed this with the amaze? ive noticed that with some apps, particularly with fonts while scrolling, i get screen ghosting. it usually doesnt happen when im watching a video or playing a game, but when im scrolling thru my homescreens (using golauncher) my widgets will ghost a bit. pure news widget does it pretty bad while im scrolling up and down and mclock will do it as im scrolling between homescreens. havent noticed it too much with sense widgets/apps, but admittedly i dont use the sense launcher. thoughts?
Yep, I have this too. It's the thing where the moving parts seem to blur when in motion right?
I have it too ANNOYS the hell out of me. Then I got used. But when I do pay attention to it its hard not to notice until I put it in my pocket for a while again.

Yup, that's it. Its weird because it doesn't happen with every app. I usually notice it the most with text on screen. The letters become a deeper shade of whatever color they are. Its like it blurs, then as soon as I stop scrolling, they look normal again.
It buggs me too. I sincerely hope that issue is fixed in a future update

from what i know of ghosting, it has to do with the screens refresh rate, so im not sure (correct me if im wrong) that a software update will fix it. the fact that i never heard of this while doing my research prior to getting this phone, leads me to believe a few things; nobody notices it, not that many people have the issue, or nobody cares. either way, htc wouldnt recognize it as an issue, thus no fix.
I thought this was normal lol. I hope this is fixable.

stock rom does the same thing. if youve just gotten your phone, chances are you havent used it enough with a bunch of different apps to notice.
ive been doing a bit more research and have seen others notice the blur on different phones as well, some more noticeable than others. seems like there could be a few things that may cause this:
1. app is not optimized for qhd screen
2. anti-aliasing
3. bad screen
since in my experience i havent noticed it with every app (or maybe its less noticeable but still present), im leaning more towards number one. hopefully more people can chime in with their experience

Thoughts on ICS OTA

Does anyone else feel like the ICS OTA was just kind of thrown together and not built very well? To me, nothing seems to be themed consistently and I feel as though ICS/Sense doesn't fit very well together. In some cases, I'll get menus with the black and blue ICS theme and then other times I'll get the Sense white and green menus. Other than having ICS (which is awesome) I don't think HTC put much time into this update. What do you guys think?

Blame verizon all you want for the bad timing of the update, but the performance of ICS is 100% HTC's fault. No doubt about it
Problem is that HTC is mostly green and they want to stay green except Android is turning blue. I guess HTC needs to learn how to theme? Oh and I blame Verizon for everything as well, what a bunch of blowers..
It's kinda sh*tty but it doesn't bother most of us since we're on custom roms that are themed. Source is the only thing I care about.

I was annoyed to find out on a trip this weekend that the navigation voice does not have its own volume and if you play music at the same time, you can barely hear the voice. I had to mute my music when there was a lot of directions coming up.
It is an improvement for me
I am completely stock. I don't like to root until Verizon wont cover the phone any longer. But I was getting close though because of the data drop issues. ICS is not the solution to everything, but it made my phone able to work like I expect. I don't know if I blame HTC, Verizon or the tooth fairy. I know that they all should have been bothered by the number of people running stock that were dealing with not being able to us the internet as a general rule that is a core function of a smart phone, imho.
For those of you who are developing roms, thank you. I will root this phone, probably around Christmas. Thanks for keeping a variety around. :good:

Honestly I am ok with most stuff on it. The only major issue I am having is battery drain. I am hoping after I reset it will be fixed. But it did fix the 4g issues I was having. The browser hasn't been slower for me but I haven't tried videos on it yet. I am annoyed handsent isn't syncing the pics but since the address book is it sounds like a handcent problem. Overall I am happy with it. It's nice I can disable the bloatware and I like how ICS is. I like the sense its not much difference then GB, 4.0 would be nice but at least my phone is working now.

Nice! Glad to hear that you're happy with your phone and the update :good:. If you're having battery issues, try reducing the frequency of data synchs etc. Lower screen brightness for general use etc. Could also try a battery calibration. Good luck!

I kept my sync frequencies, and screen brightness the same so I could compare battery efficiency between GB and ICS. ICS is about 50% worse, in my experience. My extended battery lasts 1 day 9 hours to 0% battery, where it used to last a full 2. It's horrendous. If I reduced sync times and brightness, etc. on GB I would be approaching or exceeding the 3 day mark. Users shouldn't have to do all that just to hit 2 days on ICS. I know some users do not experience these battery issues (my wife and coworker do not), so I have to assume it's an actual defect in my handset.
I agree with OP. Nothing seemed themes consistently at all. I couldn't stand bouncing back and force between ICS and Sense themes, which were entirely different (and arguably clashing).
I spent plenty of time waiting for the OTA, and when it finally came and flashed a new ROM that night.
Screen brightness messes up after using camera (mine stays at full brightness until I lock and unlock again), landscape keyboard is severely ****ed (not so much the keyboard but the displayed content above it where my cursor is), and the themes a little but they don't bother me at all. Ive always had that auto brightness problem with the camera even on the droid incredible so its not new to me but i did notice that if you try a new theme some parts of HTC's green theme turn into your color of theme. But not always.
I agree with everything said pretty much accept battery life. Mines still good even on these stock kernals.
Moral of the story... Nexus only from now on lol. The themeing issues and old sense and old version of ICS when we finally get the update is annoying to me. Why didn't they just release the source and not push an outdated update lol.
