[Q] HTC Unlock Bootloader - HTC Amaze 4G

It looks like HTC has unlocked all Android bootloaders[/URL] from smartphones launched after September 2011. I have just received the Amaze about a week ago.
Unfortunately I can't post the link since I don't have enough posts. But if you go to tmonews you will see the link and information HTC has posted. HTC has on there site :
All HTC Android devices launched after September 2011 are unlockable. The website will be updated accordingly to reflect this in the coming weeks. We continue to work on models launched prior to September 2011, please check back often for the status of older devices.
Please correct me if I am wrong and need more clarification on this feature that HTC is giving us - Am I correct to believe this feature will root your phone. I will take it as yes as this is what I am to gather from reading. So with this root that HTC is allowing - buy question is:
The last time I rooted a phone was believe it or not - the myTouch 3g - the original. So its been a while. I would like a new rom on this new Amaze. There are many out there, but I am not familiar with reliability and there is just so many rome- its confusing. Can someone please tell me which rom would be the way to go for the Amaze 4G. The options I would like would be simple like the wifi hotspot, wifi calling, good memory etc etc....basically the rom that comes with the phone is fine in my book, but it doesn't allow for hot spot due to the cost, and thats basically my biggest problem.
So any help would be appreciated.
Peace

Unlocking your bootloader does not give you root by itself.
You can obtain root but flashing a custom recovery by fastboot (which you should be familiar with coming from another HTC device) then flashing a custom rom from the recovery. However it's important to note that you must unlock your bootloader to fastboot flash anything. Also this device is very much different than the MT3G device. This device is much easier to root (provided you already unlocked your bootloader) but we cannot flash kernels by custom recovery, can't update radios, etc until we get s-off. Regarding S-OFf... doesn't look like it'll happen anytime soom.

Crazy... This phone is awesome. Would think people would be on it like stink on $hit. Wish I could do it.

Thanks, Binary - well at least this clears things up for me. Now I have to decide...errr...thanks again and take care.

[Q] Rooted my View. Now what?

Hi all,
I've had my EVO View 4g and I just rooted. I'm kind new to android so I'm learning as I go. I just had a couple of questions regarding my View tablet. They are as follows...
1. I purchased my tablet without a data plan, is this going to affect me as far as getting updates (I have an EVO 3d with connected hotspot so I just connect to that)?
2. Now that I'm rooted, where do I go from here? Is there a site that is just for this tablet where I can go to get roms, kernels, themes, etc.? I don't see a whole lot of info regarding this tablet anywhere.
3. Can I use my view to make phone calls even if I don't have a data plan and how?
4. When the heck are we getting Honeycomb?
Any help getting my tablet optimized to its fullest would be greatly appreciated.
1. You don't want OTA updates. If you install one, you will lose root. And depending on what they update, you might not be able to root again until somebody cracks whatever new protection HTC thought up.
Its pretty typical that rooted versions of the most recent updates are posted here in Development. Those are the ones you want to flash, not the official OTAs. Flyer is not as well supported here as other devices. But normally on other devices, rooted versions of OTAs are often available shortly after the OTAs go live. Sometimes even before, if somebody gets a hold of a leaked ROM!
2. Have you looked at the Development section? ROMs and kernels are posted there.
3. Dunno
4. Nobody knows except HTC, and they aren't saying.
Thanks a million!
I haven't looked at the development section just yet, but I will do that asap. One more question....
Can the view be overclocked once I flash a ROM. If so where can I find a kernel?
Also, can you recommend a for the view?
Again, thanks so much for the help. Your the only one!

Samsung Galaxy S III Debacle

As a long time basic phone owner I am finally decided to make the switch to android. I have done my research and have come to the conclusion that i would like to purchase the Samsung galaxy S III. However, money is always an issue and I am trying to spend as little as possible but get the most of out my phone.
With Verizon, my current service, the additional 720$ for the 2 year data contract is scary, but the phone, only 200$ is nice. My major question about Verizon is, is it possible to root the Verizon SGSIII. I have read multiple posts from outraged customers who bricked their phones due to the locked bootloader on the Verizon SGSIII. Also, from what i have read from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885 it is possible to root the verizon version of this phone although it is more complicated.
My second option is to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and root this phone through verizon. I would love to run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on my device which is why i would like to root the device and flash something that would give me this enhancement. However, if i purchase the Galaxy Nexus, i am locked into a 2 year contract with a phone that came out 6 months ago and could soon be outdated by its "older brother" said to be released this december.
Which is my best option and if someone could please clear up the Root problems with the Verizon SGSIII it would be extremely helpful. Thanks for any response!
Best Regards

What are you guys talking about...10 seconds in the Verizon forum would turn up a root tutorial thread. So yes, root is available and there are workarounds that permit custom kernels.
Edit: there's a sticky thread in this very forum of how to obtain root on the Verizon gs3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709

From what I understand Verizon Galaxy S3 owners will be able to root but not be able to flash kernels or use aosp roms like CM9/10 since you guys can't flash a kernel.
Unless you buy the bootloader unlocked Verizon Galaxy S3 from Samsung directly, you won't be able to flash kernels.
Again that is inaccurate. Using kexec we can boot custom kernels. We have an early version of cm9 running too. The real hold up is the ril which prevents the cm9 build from having mobile data

To my understanding, they released a developer version that's boot loader unlocked.

They are, with the release date undisclosed, however it is 600$ which is a little outrageous.

So if i purchase the verizon version of the phone and i root it and flash CM9/10 using kexec will the phone still work? what do you mean by the RIL preventing cm9 from having mobile data? just want to clarify thanks for the help.

To clarify some things, since half of the users on these boards are misinformed:
The Verizon (and pretty much every) Galaxy S3 has had root since virtually their release date.
The Verizon version does have a locked bootloader (see #3), and there is going to be a "Developer Edition" released directly from Samsung with pretty much no warranty, and it will be completely unsubsidized.
The bootloader lock has not stopped us from flashing custom ROMs or custom kernels. See below.
Here's some source links for you, in rough chronological order:
The "Root66" method for easily obtaining root
Original proof-of-concept showing custom kernels can be booted
Standard install of CyanogenMod 9 via kexec demonstrated
Functioning 3G/4G data on CyanogenMod 9 demonstrated
Unofficial guide to installing CyanogenMod 9
CVPCS states locked bootloader is a non-issue
Ongoing research & development on the locked bootloader
I could go on and on, but as you can see, development of custom ROMs (both TouchWiz and AOSP based) has not been hindered by the locked bootloader.
The community has pulled together on this, and developers from non-Verizon carriers have been tons of help in all the progress that has been made so far.
Many people, including myself, do not support the idea of the Developer Edition SGS3, and I personally doubt it will have even a tiny fraction of the community the consumer version has.
wifi hot spot on verizon galaxy iii
My question is. Even though the bootloader is locked am I still able to get root access and use the existing rom that cane with the phone originally and add the wifi hot spot feature. If so where do I find the wifi hotspot software? Sorry if it is a noob question but this is my first post.
Thanks in advance

Please visit the Verizon SGS3 development forum, all of your questions can be answered with a little browsing.
In short: yes you can root your phone very easily. You can install Free Wifi Tether from the Google Play store, and it works fine on a rooted phone. Finally, rooting involves installing a "stock" ROM (i.e. the one that came with your phone), the only difference being root access.
I have done all of this, so has my totally noob roommate.

I thought my post was pretty clear that you can easily gain root access with the current ROM.
I don't know about using the built-in wifi hotspot feature, but I know apps from the Play Store like FoxFi work just fine, even without root.
The Kexec method is a bandaid solution that can easily be patched by Verizon in the future.

Just one final question, i know there are many people working on getting 4.1 Jellybean onto the SGSIII for the other versions (at&t sprint international etc.) is there a way i can get it onto the verizon one even with the locked bootloader? Like it is possible to get CM10 alpha on my phone and possible use that? or has this not been figured out yet. sorry for all the questions i just wanna try to learn as much as possible before i make a purchase.

HTC Evo...Confusion.

I decided to do some extensive research on the following questions and while some were answered, most weren't.
For those of you who may or may not remember the good ol' days with the htc hero..where one click roots were common. Apps like z4root plunged me into the fantastic world of rooting. Now rooting is much more difficult, as I have come to determine with other sources. I am eligible for an upgrade and am going to get the HTC Evo 4G LTE. I would like to root it but keep the original stock rom as it has all these awesome features that come along with it. Unfortunately I heard that you can't get OTA software updates while rooted. I don't know if this means it just won't allow me to do it or if it'll brick my phone trying. This is an issue I haven't come across before as I had the HTC hero and it no longer received software updates. I did however see that some people said developers offer these updates with some additional features right out of the box. Does that mean people will be having sense roms perfected so to speak when the OTA software updates come out? Because that then leaves me with the question of having to unroot my phone. On another note z4root claims to be able to unroot phones instantly no matter how you rooted it. I really do want to root it because I'd like to take advantage of the apparent good features of sense...while deleting that annoying bloatware and having wifi tether. Until that EVO then gets to a point of dinasaur speed..at which I am fully ready to jump into Cyanogenmod. They have truly won me over. So just wondering if this is possible. Please feel free to correct any noob mistakes or wrong information as I am learning and need to continue to do so. Oh and last thing...if it's true that developers will be taking sense roms and adding stuff into it so people like me can have those new updates with root still..where would I go about finding such updates? Websites..etc. Thank you!
If you want to root it you can do it through HTC or go for s-off depending on your hboot.
Either way after an ota comes out there will be the updated stock from posted here if you want to get the updates. With HTC dev to unlock you get relocked if you take the ota's.
S-off you never want to take ota's as it may change your hboot and you may lose your ability for s-off in the future.
Also check out the stickies at the top of the forums for info on rooting the evo lte.

Lot of different questions compacted into that large paragraph. Not clear on which questions you want answered and in what priority. I'll do my best to throw out some answers.
First, comparing the EVO LTE to the Hero will result in a bit of confusion. If z4root worked on the Hero, then the Hero did not have write protected internal memory. In the world of security, otherwise known as methods to prevent root access, internal memory write protection is one of the more complicated methods used on modern cell phones. Due to the complexity of the internal memory write protection, there are very few people and groups capable of reverse engineering and bypassing this security, which is why there aren't very many tools, usually only one or two. Prior to this internal memory write protection, back in the z4root days, methods of gaining root access were much simpler.
Now, to the modern day HTC devices with the internal memory locked down. HTC offers and official tool, after many users requested, that allows *most* of the internal memory to be unlocked and root access gained. There are some 3rd party methods of internally unlocking the memory, but these are rare due to the required complexity.
In regards to applying OTA updates, other than the internal memory locking controlled by the bootloader, as mentioned above, OTA updates have charged relatively little to the days of the Hero. All OTA updates remove root access, but in a very simple manner by changing permissions. This can easily be restored. On the other hand, HTC OTA updates sometimes will update the bootloader, which can have the impact of relocking the internal memory, or patching a 3rd party memory unlock solution.
All frustrations with gaining root access should be directed at the carrier and manufacturer as they have intentionally devoted time and labor to developing these methods and they are the only parties with the power to directly change the process.
Hope that information helps fill in a few gaps on the changes that have occurred from the Hero to the EVO LTE in regards to root access/security!
Wow you guys are fast I think e everything was answered. But now I have two new ones. So I can root it through HTC..could you please explain how I would go about doing this? Do I just send it to them asking them to root it? And as for the updating without having to unroot it developers will post like SENSE with additional out of the box stuff here I just gotta find it .
THANKS!!!

Go there and you can use the tool to unlock. As previous user posted, it allows most, NOT all, of the internal storage/memory/partitions to be written to.
You will void your warranty with HTC doing this though, however, most sprint stores from what I have read, don't know that you used the tool to unlock unless they specifically check for it in the HBOOT.
If you are on the 1.13 software, then, you can use the LazyPanda method to root and obtain full S-OFF (all paritions unlocked). If on 1.22, your only option at this point is to use the official HTC dev unlock method.
If you are on 1.15 use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919
Its HTC dev unlock and all completely automated. It will unlock your phone, put on a custom recovery, and root teh stock ROM
If you have 1.13 run lazy landa to S-OFF
Thanks guys will do!

Is it just me, or is the development section for this phone a ghost town?

I remember the HTC Evo days. Boy, I spent hours-a-day browsing the development section on XDA to get my flash fix. That carried over with my Samsung Galaxy S2 and then the S3. Now that I'm considering coming back to HTC for a fresher experience, I found myself jaw-dropped at how ghostly the development forums are. I figured this could be a result of the phone being so young; so I went to the GS4 to see if that holds true. Wow... what a difference. Those forums seem busier than hell. And it's only been about a month since it was released as well.
Anyone have any idea why that is? I've been trying to convince myself to get the HTC One. I got over the fact that it lacks a replaceable battery, a MicroSD card, and recently, I got over the fact that the images are just not all that it's hyped up to be. I figured I'd be transitioning to the Moto X Phone when that comes out later in the year, so I might as well put-up with these shortcomings. But not having the development support that I experienced with the earlier HTC devices, and recently with the Samsung devices is just not something I think I can get over.
I am constantly thinking of the word "potential" when referring to this phone. What a shame. HTC had all the tools to flip the market on its feet, but it seems as if they came up short... again.
Check out the non-carrier-specific forum...it's pretty active.
EDIT: HTC didn't come up short, this phone is considered quite a success.
My theory for this specific forum being dead is that T-Mobile's national release of this phone was yesterday (06/05/2013). Before that, it was only available in their "high-volume" locations.
Oh wow. And all of those will work with the Tmo version?

yea all the development is in the international forum. all roms on that forum will work on the tmo htc one and they work very well. i have flashed every sense based rom and most of the aosp roms. definitely not a ghost town over there:good:
Yeah, they should. But as always, continue at your own risk.

As you've noticed by now, there's plenty of developer support for the HTC One. It's all just confined to the general HTC One forums, which makes sense, as the various roms can be used on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and international HTC One's. Most developers don't want to have to maintain 3 or more separate threads for the same thing.
As was pointed out though, if you're looking for T-Mobile wifi calling compatibility, be careful about the ROMs you flash. Since the 4.2.2 OTA for T-Mobile isn't out yet, no 4.2.2 ROM is going to support it. I'd suggest Android Revolution 9.4, or a similar 4.1.2 ROM if WIFI calling is essential to you.
Also, since a Google edition of the phone is going to be coming out in the near future, developer support is likely going to expand even further.
So I think it's safe to say you can put your fears to rest and buy an HTC One. I don't think you'll regret it.
Yea I've been hanging out in the International One forums as almost all their ROMs work for us.
This forum really shouldn't even have a development section since there's not really any specific T-Mo stuff that needs to be done.
Every single ROM in the GSM section will work for T-Mo. There isn't a single one that won't work. The only thing you lose is T-Mo's branded stuff and T-Mo's wifi calling (as they are the only ones who do Wifi calling)/

Thanks you guys so much for your replies. I'm happy to see that the development forums for the One is indeed thriving. I'm more confident in snagging a one over the GS4 now.
Indeed, I don't see a reason as to why even bother with a Tmo specific section.

I haven't owned an HTC since the OG Nexus One (had all Nexus devices since) so I'm reading up on S-OFF etc before I flash a new ROM. I really want to try out wifi calling though so that's why I'd like to make sure. Thanks in advance!
PS - link to ROM if anyone wants it: http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=Android_Revolution_HD-One_9.4.zip

9.4 definitely has wifi-calling. I'm on 9.3 at the moment and wifi-calling works perfectly for me on T-Mobile. In the installer, just be sure to select T-Mobile as your carrier and it will install all the necessary files for wifi calling.
Also, note that S-Off isn't required to flash this ROM. All you need to do is unlock your device through HTC Dev, located at the HTC Dev site. I'd give you a direct link, but asinine restrictions in place on this forum are preventing that at the moment. Just Google HTC Dev and it will be the first result. You can't miss it.
Anyway, unlike with earlier HTC devices, this unlock method allows you to flash everything you need to update the ROM. Only some of the "black box" partitions like the radio and bootloader aren't flashable when it's unlocked with this method, but to my knowledge, no ROM requires that, and furthermore, the Nexus devices are very similar in that respect.
The only real advantage to S-Off is if you plan on flashing a different carrier's RUU, altering the radio, or changing your CID. Anyway, just something to be aware of.
Good luck.

Sweet, thanks I'll definitely try 9.4 then! Reception in my office all day is terrible so I'm excited to try wi-fi calling.
I think I understand in theory why S-OFF would not be needed. but the nerd in me wants full control with S-OFF.. Also, if I use S-OFF, i can return my phone to bone-stock and keep warranty right? As amazing as the hardware on the HTC One is (I've gotten used to sub-standard hardware with the Nexus line), I'm not 100% sure yet I want to keep it.
Any chance you could educate me on what CID is for? Evidently it may restrict/allow flashing ROMS from certain regions?
Also, I believe I have a basic understanding of what an RUU is, but could you elaborate for me by any chance? I believe it's basically an all i one installer for a full stock ROM?
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but this T-Mo sub forum seems a bit more forgiving than some other areas

It's worth doing to S-OFF. If you do, you'll have the ability to relock the phone and put it back to S-ON with zero indication that you ever messed with it. Also, CIDs are used to restrict ROMs from certain carriers to only be installed on certain devices. It's really only a stock or stock-leak ROM limitation, I don't think a single ROM in either the regular or original development section is CID-locked. Either way, if you are S-OFF, you can change your CID code to whatever you want it to be (the code "111111") is referred to as "SuperCID" because that allows you to in theory run an RUU/OTA from ANY Carrier regardless.
You are correct about what an RUU is. However, each RUU is specific to a build of Android made by the carrier, and so far, I think only the Sprint RUU is out. No one has a T-Mo RUU yet (but you really don't need one, all you have to do is flash the stock rooted ROM from our section here and then unroot from the SU app options).
Enjoy tinkering.

Perfect, thanks for confirming all that. I think I'm ready to get the HTC-noob stink off of me The phone feels so amazing in hand, it's making me look at all these Nexus devices (Nexi?) I have in a bit of a different light.. And once the Google Experience software drops, hopefully I won't miss having a Nexus as my daily driver!
You guys are so awesome. I'm counting down the days until July 1st now when I'll get my hands on my own HTC One. =)

You're going to enjoy the One. It's the first Android phone to have the build quality of an iPhone with specs that beat the pants off it
The only thing that sucks about the One is that because it has such a high pixel density, you will be extremely sensitive and aware of pixels in all your other displays (laptop/desktop/tablet etc).
I own an ASUS Zenbook, which is a 13" ultrabook with a full 1920x1080p display which is retina-levels of dense on such a small screen (I think it's almost 170 pixels per inch). The One? The one is a whopping ~470 pixels per inch. It is stupidly dense and I promise you won't find a single pixel no matter how hard you look.

Look like they took it down. I have it in my local computer here and I can upload it for you somewhere if you like. PM me if you have access to somewhere I can put it for you.

[Q] Kernel Source from HTC ???

Who here is willing to help me out with harassing/asking/begging HTC Dev to upload the source code for the Max kernel? I'm pretty sure everyone here knows that with out that AOSP is just a pipe dream..
Idea #1 After talking to Flyhalf and some thoughts just being tossed around I went ahead and attempted to boot the m7vzw recovery to see where it got me which turned out to be absolutely nowhere lol... Except for a black screen for a few moments and then it rebooted itself back to the bootloader.. It was a nice brief thought of us possibly being able to work with a kernel and code that already existed publicly! But again just another pipe dream...
Idea #2 Was an actual interesting idea considering it doesn't brick the device and render it useless, but after talking to nocoast from liquid/carbon/gummy what have you, as he said this would just be EPIC lol.. He suggested that I attempt at flashing the One Max to a GPE (Google Play Edition for those noobs that don't know what GPE is) and converting it over to a Google Experience device like the OG HTC One users are doing.. It's a fantastic idea but I however won't be the first to attempt this. Also considering we don't have an actual Verizon HTC One Max RUU available as of yet where if the phone wasn't completely shot that I would be able to RUU back to stock. See this would actually be seriously epic but my thoughts on that are if it did flash hypothetically speaking and it booted no problem what happens with RIL? I haven't seen anyone with a Verizon HTC One post anywhere that they were able to do this, correct me if I'm wrong.. There wouldn't be radios available for us considering the GPE devices are all GSM... Not to mention that even if I pulled the radios from a firmware dump and did some zip hacking the frameworks would probably not support it.........
Anyone reading this know of any Verizon HTC One users who successfully flashed their device to GPE and everything is working? If someone can find anyone who truly pulled this off I'll for hell of it give the GPE kitkat RUU a flash to see what happens out of curiosity maybe... I mean if you think of it how dope would it be to have the Google bootloader and get updates from Google and not HTC!!!
This is why I'm saying if you have a few minutes to spare please go to HTC Dev site and shoot them an email asking for kernel source code so we can get the ball rolling on AOSP builds.. I know I'm not the only one who is hurting for some source built ROMs! I've used Flyhalf's work since day one on the original Verizon HTC One and I know how phenomenal his builds were and I'm dying to run them on this! I always used HTC devices with the exception of briefly going to the Galaxy Nexus then Galaxy S3 then quickly to the Note 2, and what I loved about the Note 2 was the screen size! The last 3 devices I listed was all for screen real-estate well the Gnex was for ICS and 1st Verizon Nexus, but the rest screen real-estate! I don't need all that extra bloat garbage Samsung crams down everyones throat with the stylus and s-pen apps and s-voice and blah blah.. I loved it cuz it was BIG! I fell in freaking love with the HTC One but my biggest issue was coming from the Note 2 was stepping back down to a 4.7 inch screen....... Everything else I loved loved loved.. Then the announced the One Max and it was a wrap! This is something I can rock with for a minute tip they release the next super sized HTC phone with more power. HTC really nails it when it comes to build quality. They are just falling short with the carriers rules on being locked down and not releasing source in a timely fashion like some of the other OEMs are..
So lets get together as a community and try and get us some source!!!!! I've already been in touch with them a few times regarding this matter, and they basically just said that they are working on getting it to us............ Come on?????? We know it exists just upload it already!
+1 we need to kick of AOSP builds. I would like to email HTC Dev, however not have done any before. Can i request you to post anything specific that needs to be added to this email? it would help the other users here too.
From what I understand they booted the Sprint One recovery on a (your?) Verizon One Max. Wouldn't that mean the Sprint One kernel could be used (with some modification) with the Verizon radio? Both are cdma so it *may* not be that difficult.
No when beaups and I messed with my Max and he updates his rumrunner to work on the Verizon variant I went ahead and flashed and booted the Sprint One "Max" recovery not the original One recovery..

Good idea thanks
alright, just contacted htc dev asking them for one max downloadables.
How did you go about contacting them? Was it through the "Tell us what you want" tab on htcdev.com? Keep us informed!!! Hopefully if enough people do this regardless of your carrier since we are looking for common source for the kernel we can expedite the process a little since HTC tends be s l o w with posting their special sauce... Also thanks pradeepvizz, much appreciated!

Yeah, did it via "Tell us what you want".
Here is the direct link for ppl to find it faster - http://www.htcdev.com/contact
i have known HTC's slow release timings over the kernel source in general and also about their bad attitude, hopefully we get more ppl to demand them. HTC One had got 4.3 update 2 months ago and it was only last week or so that the kernel source was released

Sent from my HTC One max using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I have been in contact with them pretty frequently over the past week and they have as they said "escalated the issue" to the right team to expedite the process on getting the kernel source up.. I'm right now awaiting another email from them and I encouraged them to call me as well lol.. We'll see!!! We can only hope!

I don't get any useful response from these guys... Were you successful in getting something?
Sent from my HTC One max using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I was in contact with them again last night and they responded today and told me that my escalation was received and is in the process of being reviewed and typically takes 7 to 10 business days and at that point would come to a resolution.. I explained to them that I understand Sense and HTC's extra nonsense is proprietary and told them that I don't care about that. What I care about is the kernel source and them following through with GPL compliancy and how not only on the One Max but all HTC devices based on the Linux kernel being modified and redistributed NEEDS to be made open and in good ethics in a timely fashion.... If anyone is really interested in seeing what I wrote I'll post the whole email lol.. It's a lot for me to retype. I gave it to them thorough though. I mean really gave it to them with facts and dates. How they were the originating OEM to release a public Android device and how they initiated the launch of the Open Handset Alliance and how they suck at being "Open"!! It was pretty good I felt!!!
