Hi all - long time lurker, recent rooter, first time poster. Nice to meet you and all that...
I'm just hoping someone can do a quick dummy check on my thought process. I just rooted and flashed CM7, and am overall immensely happy with the results. The one thing I really do miss from the stock ROM is the camera app. Here's the dummy check - based on my reading and research, I'm thinking it's not possible to install the stock camera from the 'bolt on CM7, because CM7 is AOSP based while stock 'bolt, obviously, is Sense based.
Am I on the money? And if so, does anyone have a recommendation for a camera replacement for CM7 with maybe touch to focus and (dare to dream) better image quality?
Or perhaps comments on the camera in your favorite Sense ROM?
Thanks for listening!
You are correct. Try the MIUI camera via the link below. It works pretty good and IMO is better than the stock AOSP camera.

*EDIT*
Newer version here -> http://dev-host.org/ro1i1549xy2w/MiuiCam_Sept2_test.apk
Much obliged - I'll check that out. Do I need to uninstall the current camera?
I've never uninstalled the old/stock camera. They seem to live together just fine. Just download and run/install the apk for MIUI and that should do it.
Thanks again. I'll give it a try.

can someone pls, help which ROM (obvious that all are great and better than orig and not better than the other) to chose for using the device for its standard function.
so, i expect flawless operation along the menu-s and fuctions, priorities:
-phone and phonebook
-emails, sms messaging and web access
-bluetooth to headset
-gps if possible
-the weather function
-somewhat working camera for still pics.
not intersted in fancy backgrounds speed of the display, milisecs of the gps and the device for games and gadgets utube etc.
would appreciate a list or mention one or the other cooked roms for the above.
cheers,

thanks, Shazad appreciate. Wonder if all agree ?
I don't think I quite understand your question. You're not concerned with speed, or anything like that - so why not stick with the stock ROM?
Every ROM that is not stock will (or from what I've noticed) have a couple bugs. If it's not a bug, then it's some slight annoyance that may or may not be the deciding factor as to whether or not you flash that specific ROM. They are works in progress. The stock ROM, albeit is mind numbingly slow, is free from bugs.
Disable TF3D and bam, there ya go! Instant speed.

so,
no TF3D and smooth opeartion without slowdowns, freezes and soft resets with any ROM available? again, basic phone, text, email massaging and not utube and other not really phone related needs.

I'm running Wolfbreak's TW 007 with custom kernel 3.52 and BB52. I installed from scratch (stock 2.1, then up to TW 007). It's brilliant in every aspect except I can't get Vignette to work. It takes the picture and gives me the preview screen but from there if I try to save, it gives me a VIE error saying it can't create the file. I've tried all options for save location and I've tried all resolutions also, still no love. Has anyone else come across this? Have tried the 2 latest versions of Vignette, and the demo.
same thing for me :/ any1 know anything on this issue?
Also battling with this. Mailed vignette support and they sent a new test version but it also has problems. From what I can see it falls over after it has saved the file. I'm guessing it may have something to do with the gallery as that doesn't get refreshed. If you force a media scan it then picks up the picture in the gallery.
I was also having problems with the LED flash. I played around with various versions of the 3D gallery and suddenly the flash has started working. This is also with the custom kernel. There have been quite a few posts about this in the dev thread, but I need to get to 10 posts before I can add my findings there.
I have a few different versions of the 3D gallery at home which I will try tonight to see if any of them help further.
It seems older versions work better, especially in illimanting flash issues.
Try and find an old backup of the demo version...
i tried the past 3 versions of the full version, and all had same error in processing photo.. i found out it does save them in the folder, just throws an error when processing.
I'll check in the gallery after trying some more photos. Just a prick that we get this error. I'd like to post in Wolf's thread but also don't have my 10 posts up.
thanks for your work on this andypen, I haven't tried any different versions of the gallery, and TBH I haven't bothered trying the LED as yet.
[edit] a couple of questions, how do you force gallery to refresh? just kill the app then start it again?, also, I must be stupid but I can't find the LED control in Vignette [/edit]
The problem has gone in 2011.06.23 version from market.
Sent from my X10a powered by Wolf's TW-007.1 / bb:65 / zKernel / BRA
Also I have the same problem. What could be the solution? Some speak of the core of the 3D Warehouse, other processing before storing the photograph, and so on.
What if, I can not make Vignette function properly.
I tried 4 different versions of this application, but still has the same processing error when trying to save the picture, so I concluded that this ROM is not correct for the operation of Vignette.
Please someone who has a possible solution?
Greetings!

I still have the problem...
If you don't have the problem, what's your settings?
this is infuriating...
I have found a possible solution to the vignette saving error. Instructions here
Have any of you contacted the developers of the vignette app and asked if they can rerelease an older version that works.
I have version 2010 - 11 - 04.3 which has worked on all versions of wolfs rom with all custom kernels.
I have a backup up of this but can not share it as it is paid app.
But I am sure the devs of the app will help once they know about the issue
Maybe it's an issue of the 3.52 kernel? i'm on wolf's tw071 rom, with zkernel and the latest version of vignette, fully functional.
No its nothing to do with the kernel....
I have had vignette working on all the 3.4 and 3.5 kernels with wolfs rom.
And now with z's new kernel and BB67.
Just email the devs of the app and ask them for an old version!!!

EDIT
PS...I have just sent the following email to the devs of vignette
Hello,
I was wondering if you could help a lot of people out.
I am writing this on behalf of a lot of users of the SE x10i who use custom roms from the XDA developers site.
As you may be aware the camera on these roms does not support flash light or zoom, the only way to implement that was through vignette and developers of these custom roms often pointed users to your app in order to get zoom and flash on the camera.
However, with the latest versions of vignette the flash and zoom also seem to be not working but those of us with older versions still have full functionality.
Would it be possible for you to re-release older versions in the market for those people who use custom roms on x10.
I have the november 2010 version and it works fine.
This would be a great help to everyone at XDA who uses the x10i.
I look forward to your reply.
PS, i have copied this email to the xda website.
Regards

Greg I‘ve been too busy of late to follow this. Thanks for taking the initiative here!

Here is the response from the developers of the app to my email.
Hi Greg
Some older releases of Vignette can be found on our website at
http://sites.google.com/site/neilandtheresa/Vignette/releases
If you can provide us with any information that would allow Vignette
to detect whether it was running on an X10 with such a ROM (e.g. the
contents of android.os.Build.VERSION.INCREMENTAL and
android.os.Build.DISPLAY), we might be able to solve the problem for
you.
Thanks,
Neil.
Hope this helps you all out.
Greg
I'm on bb67 kernel 2.6.29 and it works fine. I did have to change the save location though.

Hey,
does someone know, why one of the Promoted 4.0 features, "video snapshots"
is not available in AOSP builds like Cyanogenmod? it means you can take a high-res photo while recording video at the same time.
It is an android 4.0 feature and not specific to the HTC One X as some people suggested earlier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64JulxSOjzc&feature=relmfu#t=46m13s)
It does not need a special camera sensor since it is available in the value pack for the galaxy S i9000 (http://www.sammobile.com/2012/04/10/guide-samsung-galaxy-s-s-value-pack/)
does someone know how this comes?
The Samsung camera hardware drivers are not open source and are therefore not part of AOSP, the CM devs have modded the AOSP camera apk to run on the SGS2 camera, but not all features are implemented, until a couple of weeks ago you couldn't even save video taken with the SGS2 camera, if it's possible to implement, I'm sure they will at some point, be patient. If you want it faster than 12/24/2045 I suggest downloading the sources for the AOSP camera and see if you can add the features yourself.

yeah, i know that video recording wasn't working until just recently (i've been using CM9 since the first nightlies)
i wish i could help with this feature but i have barely any clue of coding so i would be of no use
Generally the CM team worries about things actually working and working properly before they get into added features, they've made a lot of progress but there are still a few issues that are probably on the list above camera snapshot, patience is always the key with these things.
Is there any rom out there, that have a stock ICS people application, and all other features of samsung rom?
Questions go in the Q/A section Thread moved.
If I understand you correctly you`re looking for custom rom that looks like stock? So, Alliance base or VillainRom would be the answer
Yes I am looking for a custom rom, but i need the samsung camera with zero shutter lag, video calling support, and the ICS stock contatct application.

I know this doesn't exactly answer you, but if you want the interface looking like stock ICS then you should download Nova Launcher from the Play Store.
I prefer it over TouchWiz, especially after I'd got used to the ICS ROMs on my GT-I9000 over the last 6 months.
The only problem is some of the Samsung widgets don't work, some of them do but not all of them.
Strangely there are a couple of things I do prefer about Samsung's software though, including the calendar and contacts apps.
I have been using a rooted IncS for more than a year now and finally want to make the switch from HTC to Samsung. One of the biggest drawbacks for me when using a rooted IncS was that I had to use a Sense based ROM to maximise the my camera experience. I understand some .apk relating to the camera has not been released by HTC hence AOKP/ASOP ROMs are unable to offer the same camera experience as Sense ROM.
My question is whether the same restrictions apply to a Samsung phone and would I be required to use a touchwiz based rom to best utilise my camera? Or would I be able to get the same camera experience in AOKP/ASOP ROMs.
I did try looking for an answer but was unable to locate one. In the event I missed out on it and end of repeating this question I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Unfortunately there's not one single AOSP/AOKP rom on the S3 that functions properly due to undocumented Exynos platform and partially working (or not working) hwcomposer. There are always glitches in the camera, when switching front to back and lack of support for modes that you have in stock firmwares like hdr, hires panorama mode etc. Stick to stock if you need your phone's full functionality. If you can live with some basic apps force closing try the newest CM10 nightly you shouldn't be too disappointed.
