Hi,
I just wanted a simple answer (as I could not find one) whether I could simply use Superoneclick to root my Galaxy S2 (providing I installed the correct USB drivers for the phone).
Also, the phone was purchased in the UK (and still is in the UK) so how would that work with roms etc and rooting.
Thanks a ton in advance.
Ben
Yes. I'm in the UK, on contract, i've rooted, flashed rims, csc's, modems, everything, without problems. Good luck.

So you just wacked the phone in, booted up Superoneclick and clicked root?
and could you say what roms you have had success with, or is the Samsung S2 universal (I mean, my old phone the Atrix was separate, I.E. ATT roms needed to be different to Orange roms)

If you're rooted kies won't let you update. You would have to unroot and then upgrade with kies which is probably not worth the hassle as the custom roms on xda are probably far better than what is available on kies.

Its my first android phone, and I hear cyanogen does not fully support SGS2 yet, and that it does not have hardware acceleration. So if ice cream sandwich is released, how can I update? I heard 2.3.6 or 5 is already out for SGS2.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Most of the custom roms on xda are 2.3.6. Cyanogen will probably release ics first and then you will see it appear on xda. There are a couple of ics developer leaks but they are buggy. It could be as late as April before you see an official release mybe longer for some carriers.

Why ? My SGS2 rooted using zergrush method connects flawlessly to Kies, and software version is displayed correctly. I think that if phone is only rooted and not flashed with some PDA/PHONE/CSC combination that is unknown for KIES it can be upgraded this way, but of course root will be lost, so IMHO Mobile Odin with everroot will be far better way.
@marcadam: wat is ics?
@slig: wat is everroot? Is it like u wont loose root ever again? How do I get that?

1. Root will be lost, if you flash a new rom (unless its a non-wipe rom)
2. ICS(Ice Cream Sandwich) is the newest android version, also called "Android 4.0".
3. "Mobile Odin with everroot" he mentioned is an app that is installed on your phone, wich does exactly the same as the flashing Software(Odin) on your computer, wich you used, to flash a custom rom.
4. I don't suggest, updating with Kies, because many people reported, that it bricked their phones.
I suggest, that you flash CWM(Clockworkmod Recovery) on your phone, and use that(Its the most popular way to update/flash/backup/restore a ROM).

Is it possible to flash stock Samsung roms via CWM ? I thought that CWM is for flashing customs, original stocks can be flashed only by Odin (or Kies).
If the rom is made for flashing with CWM then yes. (Most rom's are made for flashing with CWM) if you can't find a cwm compatible stock version, then i can upload you one I made(newest stock version 100% stock).

Is there a way to currently root your sgs2 all from your phone? (Without a PC)
For example; Rooting +CWM>install kernel+ new rom/baseband
phone for starting base kk6/2.3.6
Just wondering. I wanted to make a powerpoint about how to root android phones, but I think each phone is so specific that a general method may not be applicable?
Also that most phones need to be flashed via PC for starters? (yes/no?)
I figured generally speaking:
1: Look for your phones model number, android version and baseband,
2: download and flash correct rom (renaming the file if necesary)
3: with phone rooted install ??? (rom/kernel/new bb/cwm or whatever)
I don't know if I can do this as a "general" powerpoint for android, but I can do it specifically for SGS2; however, not everyone has an SGS2
ideas?

I'm 99% sure that cmw needs a rooted phone to even install from rom manager but then again it actually might not ..

Please read the OP. How is rom manager working with ICS relevant to this if he's starting from KK6 GB?
Maybe mobile Odin can work but idk if you can use that without root already on the phone. I had to root mind from download mode using a pc with Odin.
Seems like a cool idea to explore.

Mobile Odin requires root.
AFAIK there's no current way to root an SGS2 without a PC. I found SuperOneClick to work just fine, doesn't require you to flash using Odin, but it does take some patience and a few tries, and a PC of course.
I could be wrong of course, please correct me if I am.
I read you can run android sdk/adb from usb stick. Just need the "final" folders installed. Any tips?
There's a method to root + install new kernel from adb cmds

I never do backups unless fresh power off then booting recovery , no rom manager ..
i just was suggesting possibly with it installed cwm can install without a pc.
the only caveat was if root access required to install it as I don't remember and can't think of any way rooting is possible without a pc EXCEPT installing a pre-rooted rom
*which is not possible on sgs2 with standard sammy recovery correct

uhhhh....
COMPLETELY different phones, COMPLETELY different hardware. NO....you cannot use rom manager for the i777 unless you are working solely with AOSP builds....in which case you would ALREADY have a CWM kernel
this has been the case on all samsung galaxy s line except the skyrocket/t989. there is no doubt that it simply DOESNT work from stock. its not speculation, its fact.
things are different over here dude. the i777 is pretty much nothing like the i727 aside from sharing a name and touchwiz....

So...I returned my phone to stock, which was a nightmare because I already had a devs ICS and the instructions (for returning to stock) are for UCKH7...got endless errors and whatnot...
Finally figure it out. So now I'm back to 2.3.6 and I figured I connect to Kies and get the At&t ICS version. No problem...got it!
Now...if I want to root it and instal cwm, how would I do it? I mean the methods at the dev section are for the gingerbread os, right?
Any help will be appreciated. :good:

Hey all,
I have just got a brand new i777, I just wanted to upgrade it to ICS and sim-unlock it.
The upgrade is to be done through kies, no problem in that.
The sim-unlocking is the issue .. i know it was easy in gingerbread to root and use herlroz app .. but now is there an easy way without using ODIN or flashing a kernel to sim-unlock this phone on the official ICS ?

The T-Mobile, UK Version has looked bootloader from what I have been told.
there are plenty of rooting video guides in the general section (to many to link just search) . Or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238 is probably the easiest way to root with the best guide.

Heard a few of my friends complaining that it did, but then again they probably where doing it wrong and had a USB connected or the phone turned on or something lol.
In the end I rooted it using the first method replied in this post, worked like a charm. Doesn't seem to have any kind of branded or locked bootloader from what I can tell, and root apps are working as they should.
A further question.. on my old iPhone, if I jailbroke it and update the firmware, it reversed the jailbreak.
I want to update the firmware on my GS3 to the latest, will it undo the root? Will I have to re-install root apps etc?
Or will the device stay rooted once i've upgrade?
Many thanks for your help, you guys/gals are a friendly bunch of clever-cloggs.
Here is a link to cwm flashable stock Roms, lg8 is what you want, you can flash these in recovery. I advise after flashing that you upgrade your modem to lh1 which is latest for uk and fixed some issues. Link also supplied

All matters regarding root etc, how to reset flash counter and return to stock for warranty can be found in i9300/General/stickies
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but whats the significance of this ROM?
Here's my device so far...
Stock ROM (never flashed anything custom) which I rooted using the above method.
I want to update to the latest firmware for the i9300, still stock though as I haven't found a feature in a custom ROM worth messing with it for me.
Then I was just going to re-root (if I needed to).
Does the ROM you posted mean that I won't have to re-root? And it will stay rooted?
And the modem thing... I don't understand.
I'm sorry to be a pain!
Thank you for your help,
the Rom listed are flashable through recovery, and there are a choice of odexed and deodexed stock Roms. Odex is the standard Rom, and Odex basically helps load apps a bit quicker, but has some drawbacks also. I could spend hours trying to fill you in but reading all the links and information I have supplied you with is the easier option
Unless you want to return the favor and spend the next few days explaining the mysteries of Windows to me, then I may consider some mutual spoon feeding
So.. to answer my question, does flashing through recov mean you do not have to re-root the device?
I wonder why the modem update is seperate? You would think they would include such things in the firmware update.
I'm a wizz on windows - fire away! haha.
I do genuinely appreciate your advice and help.
So.. to answer my question, does flashing through recov mean you do not have to re-root the device?
Yes if its not rooted .
Modems are part of firmware but can also be flashed as a separate item .
jje
JJE - My device is rooted though, which I explained
Also, the recov flashable firmware posted above lists this..
"Firmware info:
•Base Firmware: I9300XXBLG9 (4.0.4)
•Region Asia
•Country: Singapore
•Carrier: Unbranded
•Build Date: 30 July 2012
•Modem: DXLG2
•CSC: OLBBLG2
•Change List: 928452"
BLG8 has a version for Europe/UK.. but not BLG9...
Will I have to install the older one?
flash lg8 as I said, ...... lg9 is the Asian version. The modem was a separate ota update to remedy some problems.
I'm on uk Orange/t mobile so all is good
At op to your original Q... all you have to do is stay on your firmware unless you cant wait for the update to be released in the uk, then you can download the latest firmware either from xda or sammobile.com and flash with odin. Now if you stay on your firmware sometimes it will not update properly through kies because of root. In that case go on sammobile and download the firmware for your phone and flash with odin. You will lose root but you already have cf root on your computer so just root again.

Flash a stock rom. There's CWM flashable versions floating around here somewhere (look in General/search), or you can get Odin flashable ones from the usual places (Samfirmware, AndroidFirmwares.net). Ordinary stock kernel in rom package will overwrite your rooted kernel.
