Screen brightness on 2 different sgs2's - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey
I had the chance to play with a stock sgs2 today, stock 2.3.5 software.
Mine is running lite'ning rom 6.1 + #k2-18 kernel which works great
But I noticed a big difference in screen brightness
My phone is back from when sgs2 was released this one was 2 days old.
I tried to lower brightness on both phones to minimum. Mine was alot brighter, its weird imo. Any clues on how to explain this? Is it Rom related ?
Anyways, for some time ago I found some script somewhere here on xda that would guide into some settings to manually lower brightness on the screen. But I really cant find that topic anymore :/ even google isnt my friend on this one..
I always run the light on lowest, because I can easely see stuff on the screen, and would like to lower it even more, to save some battery
Can anyone help me find that topic?
Thanks,
and happy new year!
Regards Rasmus
Denmark

The SAMOLED-display is the "problem". The brightness decreases rather fast and they have a tendency to burn in. Besides that all of them are different. This was best seen when people found out about the yellow-side-problem. Some had, some didn't, some had more, done had less.

but as far as I understand Rasmusvm, he said, that his screen (the old one) was the brighter one, that's why he's confused...

check if the display settings are consistent on two phones.. there are 3 options Movies, Standard and Dynamic. There is bit of difference between the settings.
But I can not think of any other software settings that may make difference in screen brightness... it's probably hardware thing

Yes its my screen that is more brither than the new sgs2.
It wasnt a little bit you barely would've noticed, there was a huge difference thats why I find it odd..
But Im still looking for that guide to change screen brightness

I finally found the topic I was looking for

Sorry, I got that wrong and it's in fact strange....

Is a colour temp change on our android display possible like with Redshift and F.Lux?

Came across F.Lux a while back and after installing it on my laptop tonight I remembered how huge a difference it makes to your eyes and sleep after you adjust to it.
F.Lux or Redshift (Linux's variant) reduces the colour temperature of screens to reduce the blue level, as when your eyes pick up blue light from any source, your body reduces sleep hormones (melatonin) and keeps you going as it believe's it's still daytime. Ever wake up throughout the night or wake up feeling groggy everyday? This might be why.
Here's a bit from the F.lux website:
"F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.
It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better."
So what I'd like to know is if an app like this is possible on Android?
Something along similar lines was developed here: http://jsharkey.org/blog/2010/07/01/android-surfaceflinger-tricks-for-fun-and-profit/
But this sets the screen to only use one colour to display everything, be it red, blue, green, etc? but this effect is at the extreme end of the spectrum. If our phones could be tweaked to about 3400k when needed this could end up being a really useful app for all of us who stick our faces in front of our phones at night!
CyanogenMod has the Render Effect setting where you change the color temps to presets, but I haven't found an app that can do anything automatic like f.lux.
Do you know what this piece of software is called?
Does anyone have any interest in developing an app like this? just like the F.Lux software. I for one would be interested in purchasing/donating to it.
I think I stumbled across what you were talking about. 'Droid calibrator' it was named. Continuously crashed under non Galaxy S environments though, so that idea is out unless it could be modded somehow.
But yeah, does anyone have any other tips on existing software or have any interest in something like this also?
Bump this topic up! I just starting using F.lux today, and I'd kill for an Android version.
I wish i knew what it was called but my friend did have an app on his phone that changed the screens color. I assume this is what you want. Basically he had like 10 different widgets and each one tinted the screen that color.

That's a default feature of CyanogenMod. I'm looking for one that does it gradually based on the time of day.

no answers for a while someone found out something new?
From the official website:
"When is the Android verson coming out?
We have a version internally (it looks beautiful!) but it requires a very complicated installation process. We are working to simplify this and ship f.lux to the Android OS as soon as possible."
Cf.lumen
From my fingers to your eyez
I actually thought of this also. If I have the time I might make this.
I know there is Cf.lumen but you have to buy Chainfire 3d pro.
I have a very basic base (color screenfilter overlay). need custom colors and the timing, but it defiantly is possible.

Chainfire3D hasn't been updated since October, and night mode doesn't work with ICS. The dev is a complete slacker.

I broke down and bought Chainfire, I'm running AOKP b28 on an og incredible and it works fine.. $4 is wicked high for that app but I'll live
Any update for something similar? I have F.lux for my PC and it really does help a lot.
cf.lumen does the trick, but you have to have chainfire3d as well.
Love f.lux!
Actually, I prefer RedShift because it can control the brightness too! http://jonls.dk/redshift/
Lux Auto Brightness does exactly what f.lux/RedShift does, and then some!
Color Temperature and Automatic Brightness to Sub-Zero levels using the phone's Light Sensor !!!
I've dreamed so many nights about this kind of app!!!
f.lux, you can kiss my a#$ now, don't need you on android anymore
And Screen Filter... so long mate, we had some awesome reading nights but there's a new kid on the block now
p.s. I'm talking about the PAID VERSION! The free version doesn't have Night Mode and many other features
Just take a look at this little GEM!

I found lux too hard to operate. It completely took over the entire system's brightness. I found "EasyEyez" and it is so easy to turn on and off. I got the paid version and it has the sunset/sunrise timer and it is the closest I found to F.lux for Android.

Should we still buy this phone?

Hey guys,
I was planning on getting the SGSII (I just sold my SGS for this, actually) but after lurking around here a bit I'm now a bit weary of going ahead with the purchase.
Between battery drain issues, screen issues, Wi-Fi issues, heat issues, and now approx. 3-4 different versions of the SGSII (which makes me scared of ROM incompatibility between the different models) I guess I just need to ask... is this phone actually worth getting, or will I get shafted by a new, fixed version that will come out in a couple of months?
Your opinion?
No if you cannot differentiate between a few users with problems and the majority with no problem . Dont buy you will only go looking for problems .
My phone and many others have .
One No battery problem
Two No yellow screen problem
Three No other screen issues
Four No WiFi issues
Five No heat issues
Six No problems with rom incompatibility only an idiot will install the wrong rom .
jje
JJEgan Is Right..
I have brought my mobile even after knowing problem. After getting it I have started searching for what is new not for a Problem...
Only problem for me is Screen will become hot while charging but not soooo Much hot just very little other than that Great Mobile..
It will be nice if they release NFC in this not by releasing new model like the rumors saying I9101 etc ..This is One of the Best Mobiles till Now.Many people know about the problem Few People having but still they are buying ..Many shops are out of stock...I will say GET IT
I have to mostly agree with jje, except for 1 point. ALL SGS2s have the discolouration issue, but you have to specifically set up your phone in a particular manner (that no-one actually uses) and go looking for the issue in order to even vaguely comprehend what the "problem" actually is. Seriously, when you do see it you realise that the problem lies in the people whining about it, not the phone.
Unless you're unlucky enough to just get a dud phone, get it and you won't regret it. Best phone I've ever had, and that's after nearly 2 years with a HD2 and every ROM under the sun.
Duly noted. My main concern is not software issues which can and will be sorted out either by Samsung or the Android community, my main concern is with hardware issues (screen, battery, etc) which obviously can not be fixed by the community.

Personally, I don't have any hardware issues.
I get a full day of battery out of my phone, and that's using it as a smartphone (browsing; notifications such as facebook, twitter and news updates; wordfeud etc.) If I turn off all data and use it as a phone and SMS device only then I get about 2.5 days.
As for the screen, I have 0 complaints about it. It's seriously the best screen I've ever seen on a mobile device. I particularly love having mostly black backgrounds. Not only does it increase battery life, it looks bloody lovely!
Please bear in mind that most people only post threads when they have problems. It makes it sound like everyone is complaining, but they're not. If we had a real count of how many users are on this site, compared to how many are having real problems then you'd see it's actually only a small percentage, and you're gonna get that with any piece of tech.
I am not a rich guy but i gambled knowing all the problems i have been reading... So far it is just a great phone... It is a phone that make you gamble
Yet to find a problem. Battery works for a day (if this is a problem for you)...
I keep upgrading whenever a new phone comes out - SGS2 is THE fastest phone I've had with the BEST battery life.
With other phones, HTC Desire, Hero, etc I've had issues that I've had to counter by installing custom ROM's & acting as a guinie pig for the dev's but with this one - I'm on the stock ROM with no updates - it's rock solid and absolutely no issues.
I wouldn't think twice in recommending this phone.
my 2 cents...
to be honest i really love the phone. it has some annoyances but i really do like it. it's blazin' fast, i love android, and even the look and feel of the phone...
now, the only thing is: i only get about half a day of juice (recharge at night and once again in the afternoon and to be honest i just have no clue how people are getting those numbers like 20h+ of moderate use (well i guess it depends on how you dfine moderate use)... i have 0 widgets (4 widgets (stock calenda, stock powermanagement, google search and the beautiful weather thing with clock))...and main thing i do is: whats app, music, some browsing, emails (set to check only once an hour) and of course make calls... but i believe that it has to do with a bug somewhere. i freezed the wifi-sharing thingy and tried everything i've read so far to conserve battery. eventhough i have the screen set to about 10-30% brightness or auto brightness, it not very spurprised, is always around 60% or more and the android os and system use quite a lot...
but all that said, i still love the phone and i'm glad i bought it!
It's definitely a VFM. And frankly I dont have any WiFi problem. Battery it's okay too. And unless you focus at that screen with a digital camera you won't even notice the Yellowish tint. I am frankly very happy with mine.
Regards.

[Q] S3 unlock lag

Hi guys, I'm running the latest version of Slim Bean with stock modem XXLE8 and whatever kernel comes with Slim. I've noticed that there is a 1.5-2 second delay upon hitting the power or home button to the screen turning on and being ready to use. It's pretty annoying as you can imagine, I've actually figured out what the problem is, my phone is going to deep sleep too early and is taking up to 2 seconds to wake up, I wouldn't mind this if the phone has been left alone for 2 hours or so, but if I leave my phone for 5 minutes I shouldn't have to wait 2 seconds to unlock it. I came to this conclusion by using the app softlocker from the market, which disables sleep, and the lockscreen is perfectly fine with no lag, so should I try a new modem or a new kernel or is there something else I have to try to solve this issue?
There are already some discussions about that problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687328
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1636680
It is a very annoying problem and I don't really understand how a top range device like the Galaxy S3 has such a problem.
I was hopping that the official Jelly Bean update would fix it... If it does not, I will contact Samsung (as should everyone who is annoyed by the wake up lag).

I've read both but neither seem to provide much of a solution. It is pretty ridiculous a phone like the S3 with such powerful hardware suffers from unlock lag. My HTC Desire Z used to unlock instantly... Kinda disappointing.
I'm totally annoyed because of this problem, too.
isn't there a kernel or something where this doesnt happen??

Hmmmmm I might flash a stock rom and check it out because I don't remember it happening when I was running stock, tho that was for a grand total of 3 days lol.
This has always been a particular issue surrounding the Android software in terms of the optimisation of the OS...Keep in mind that kernels and ROMs with plently of adjustment may also mean plenty of variables, as small settings adjustments may alter and cause detrimental lags and issues as such. I use Phenomenal which is pretty good as there is little adjustments, disabled logs and undervolted...very good battery and response...I would recommend looking at something like that...unfortunately, should you wish not to root your device and keep it as standard, you may look at if there is an app that might be causing your the issue...but please note that slow unlocking/wake is because the device is in deep sleep.

sure, but i own quite a view other android phones and none behaves like the s3, not even the superlow-budget htc one v
i installed the omega 4.2 AOKP rom today, but the lag is there, too....i got back to arhd for now...
theres a app called softlocker, but with that the cpu never gets to deepsleep, my s3 gets warm and the battery drains badly

[Q] Need some advice on getting or not this K900! Please n.n

Hi everyone!!
To anyone that owns the K900; can you, please, encourage or discourage me about getting it? What do you guys say? I love its design and size, and I like it's Intel's chip in it. I've had a Razr i and was great!
I've followed this forum months ago, but have missed most news about this device. Can you tell me if this device will get any update like 4.3 or 4.4? Any good changes in the last months with software updates? I've heard it heated a lot at first. :/
I'm most interested in using it like if it was the Xperia Z Ultra ha; media and games! Will it do fine? What about battery life?
Is it easy to root?
Anything you could tell me about how this device is doing nowadays could help me!
Thank you in advance!

- I'm using K900 and i would like to say: buy Samsung S4 or Note 3 or Nokia 1520, it's much better
- 4.3 will be updated this month; no confirmation for 4.4 (seem like we don't get this for k900)
- Battery life: it's ok, not so good but can last for more than one day with low using
- There's no root method at this moment;but the custom rom already included but you have to wait a little longer (maybe a week after new Rom announce)
I was a previous S3 user with "The Galaxy Project" ROM.
I love this phone. For me the battery life is great lasting over a day. Lenovo's battery power management tool works well.
You quickly become use to the size and work out how to navigate around it. The Lenovo Theme is great.
Cons.
- Occasionaly I get a slight screen flicker on the sides of the phone. Simply turning the screen on and off rids this.
- The phones speaker is very low compared to other phones I have used in the past.
Yes I would recomend one.

Well I got this phone a week ago, and so far Im loving it, I hv had iPhone and HTC Onex+ but this one is making a real difference, performance compared to batter life is great.
Do hv a small issue with screen brightness as it keeps varying by itself though Auto Brightness is turned off specially on dark colors, also screen kinda brighten up/flickers while putting in PIN code on lock screen, that could be a Setting or software issue but thats not major issue and that could be only me having it and I will check with my warranty if it gets worse.
Overall I would advice it to every friend around me to hv it over Samsung, Sony and HTC.

I know what you are saying...Especially the last page of the app drawer and the notification pull down screen.
I had the issue/behavior and for a second thought I have a faulty piece..but turns out, the ROM is configured in a way that the brightness flickers. It is perfectly normal and goes away with a new launcher/ROM.
Dont worry and you have made a good choice..I am super proud of the K900...

I used it for a year and sold it because of disappointing software, there are no updates available for it after 4.2.2, but I didn't have any issues regarding hardware, battery etc. It's a pretty device, feels good in band, screen and performance is great, but software side no Android updates and not much of development, if you aren't concerned about software side than its not a bad device else you can get a lot of better options in lenovo other than this k900.

I have two K900's - one's mine and second one is my girlfriends. I crashed lcd screen (my fault, I dropped it) and replaced it with the new one. The second phone got usb problem - I had to buy usb port from china and replace it. The cost was around 8$ so it was nothing. Now everything is working fine. We have our phones for more than 1 year and we're still content.
I suggest to install custom ROM with Android 4.3 - it's way better witout Lenovo Launcher. Clean android works faster, it has longer battery life and more free RAM space.

Used Xperia X recommendation

Hi I'm considering getting a used Xperia X, would you recommend the phone after it's been out a couple years, or would you suggest finding something else? Thanks!
If you don't care about the battery life much, get it. It chugs along just fine for everyday use. I've been using it since almost 2 years now and I haven't run across any major issue. Just don't get one with an unlocked bootloader.

Cool thanks sounds great! Is the battery life bad from new or because it'll have been used for 2 years? If the second, I'm happy to slap in a replacement battery and back panel if it gets really bad.
Also while I don't plan to get one like this, what's bad about getting a phone with an unlocked bootloader?

SONY POLICY TO CONTROL DEVICES advances every year
when X came out it fall under catagory where TA.img can be EXTRACTED and DRMFIX was easy ( simple patching in RAMDISK folder within KERNEL)
so simplifying for u
1. X has battery only 2600Mah , very low! and throughout 2017 when x was on Nougat! i used to get only 4 hours SOC while you socialize via FB/whatsapp on 4G (dual sim variant) , but since April2018 the Oreo version gives 6hours of battery, they fixed some things. I carry powerbank with me just in case.
2. where X is concern MM was Faster, Nougat was good and swift on touch (bad on battery) and Oreo is very good on battery but as device gets hot, it start Lagging specially whenver you areo n 4g and lots of data is being downloaded , all social apps hangs! but after a while it gets better and X comes out of lagging phase
3. there is no harm in buying device with UB but this means DRM keys are lost! its good to have them but you wont be using them ever anways! , just make sure you flash the stockrom again and wipe everything, making sure there are no privacy risks.

come to think of it, its white only! i never saw different colors LED notifications! perhaps i never paid attention to that ... hmm strange of me..
i will update you in couple of days! but I have usually seen WHITE LED/s ONLY! (Blinking few times in nights, beside my bed) , that i remember! but i don't remember seeding green/pink/red notification blinks!
As usual on Xperia devices, the notification LED is RGB, some apps let you change the color directly in their notification settings, but if you want full control I suggest using LightFlow, where you can set any color you want, the flashing pattern and even the brightness of the notification LED...

It does. Just the app needs to support changing colours. For example, you can set a colour in WhatsApp, and it'll blink that way; For snapchat, it blinks yellow. And the led is embedded in the earpiece.
