[Q] First phone mod and FAIL!!! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need some ideas on where to go next.
*Phone: Samsung Vibe (T959) running Froyo 2.2 stock
*Rooted with Super One Click
*Ran backup with Tit BU
*Ran the 3e fix to get rid of e sig requirement
*Tried to install the Voodoo lagfix and it went through all the "normal" steps including the computer woman talking me through everything and then....
it just keep booting back into Android system recovery <2e>:
Final entry is:
--Appling Multi CSC...
Installing Multi CSC
I've rebooted 10 times..reinstalled packages 10 times and nothing.
Removed Batt, Sim and SD and also tried restarting and reloading packages....still it just boots back to recovery.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Is your phone a 4g

No it's 3G.

Hm, if you can find a way to mount your internal sdcard, you should flash the update.zip that gives you clockworkmod recovery, then from there, flash the kernel again. (voodoo lagfix)

The market has sgs kernel flasher, any 2.2 modded kernel will give you the proper cwm.

Thanks, yeah but one issue I have is my USB cord is really sketchy and it's a ***** to get it to connect. Otherwise I'd just ODIN to stock JFD and start over.
I finally got it connected to run the 3E fix and thought I was home free since I could just flash ROMS from my SD card going forward. Who knew the first one I tried would sink the ship...LOL!!!

It's fixable, though.. go spend a few bucks on a new cable.

I would be camping out in front of the shop that sold it if it was that easy...I've used 3 different cables...2 Crackberry (2 different lengths.) and the original that came with my phone.
But...the positive is Brock Lesnar got his ass whooped tonight.
Still looking for a fix...

you"re good just get that cable taken care of, brick isnt in your vocab. gotta have dependable hardware todo the software, its only $$$ and you cant take it w/th you, well that i know of......

Its 3.99 for a Samsung cable on eBay...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

how does oklahoma thunder grab a trailblazer? we Durant

Just to be clear...I don't believe the cable itself is bad, I believe the micro USB connector on the device is bad...I make that assumption based on using 3 seperate micro USB cables all with the same result...but maybe, hopefully, I'm wrong.
I've also tried multiple PC's with both XP and Win 7 on them.
Thanks.

[Q] just got a Fascinate and need help

i just bought a Fascinate today that was rooted. it's on 2.2.2, and as far as i can tell there is no custom rom on it. how do i go about unrooting, and if i do, will i be able to root again? i want a completely fresh start since i don't know what this guy has done on the phone.
also, the battery cover is pretty messed up. it still works but it has a lot of scratches. anyone know a good battery cover under $10 including shipping?

question about the battery cover, do i need to buy one specifically made for the Fascinate or can i use ones made for the Vibrant and Galaxy S i9000? i found a stock black one for the Fascinate on Amazon, but it would be cool to get a chrome colored one i saw on ebay.

thanks. for the advice. guess i'll decide on the cover later. by the way, instead of unrooting, would a factory reset via the recovery menu wipe anything that was installed such as voodoo or other .zip packages?

alright. please bear with me a bit more. i've been looking through the dev forum here and i found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013312
but i didn't find anything on Voodoo (and to be honest, i'm not exactly sure what Voodoo does). i want to flash Biffmod since i already have CM7 and i don't like MIUI or Touchwiz roms. besides Biffmod or Voodoo, is there any other essential stuff i'll need to install?

voodoo lagfix converts rfs (Touch Wiz) to ext4 filesystem. Mtd based roms use yaffs filesystem which is superior, so voodoo lagfix is not compatible and would be a downgrade quite frankly.

EDIT: need help! my computer doesn't recognize my Fascinate when i plug it in. all it does is charge. i tried both my front usb ports and my back one, but nothing. USB Debugging is on, USB Settings is set to mass storage.
Try reinstalling the samsung drivers...if that don't work try the google nexus drivers.

where can i download those? also can i use something like z4root? i really hate relying on a USB Connection for the Fascinate. i don't know why but it only works once in a while. i was able to odin to gingerbread using your guide last night, but now i can't get the phone to connect no matter what i do. this is the one huge flaw with this phone for me.
EDIT: would it matter if the phone isn't activated? since i have to do the softkey enable trick everytime i turn it on.
You can find them on cayanogen website. search google drivers... I'm not sure if activating the phone makes a difference or not... I wouldn't think so but not certain. also maybe try a different computer...just throwing ideas out there.

well there is a app called mobile odin pro. our device is not supported yet, but if you talk to the dev maybe he(chainfire) will put us next in line. I believe his plans are to make all samsung devices compatible. with this you can odin md5 and .tar files from your device.

Could be a bad download or you aren't in cwm4. Regardless of what rom im flashing I always use cwm4, never had any problems.

Hi everyone/yeah i screwed up

Well crappy first post but yeah. Ive always read stuff around here but never wanted to actually contribute because i honestly dont know much. But yeah I decided do install a rom and halfway through it just turns off . I thought I backed up but i didnt. The samsung logo will come up then turn off. I can get it into cwm-based recovery. But thats pretty much it. I coulnt find anything about it only booting to samsung then shutting down.. so im asking for someone to point me into the right direction.
Thanks any help is greatly appreciated

all you need to know is here.. good luck ..read it take your time and follow step by step
Thanks, I was actually going through all of that. It just seems like an overwhelming amount of information for me to understand. I will keep on reading of course. Am I really in that bad of a situation?
Nah 90% of all errors are recoverable. Do you use an sdcard to put your roms on? if so just download a new rom to it via computer and then flash through CWM if not then Id ODIN back to stock then go through it again. Like Mejori said just take it slow, one step at a time.
trust me ..alot of us get overwhelmed when reading all this stuff..i am no expert, and i usually find that when i mess something up on my phone it is do to a mistake i made by going to fast or from frustration .. sometimes it helps if you put everything on pause ..go to the bathroom and clear your thought and start all over!!!:laugh::laugh:

Or...still download the cwm Rom...Boot into cwm, go to mounts and storage, and mount usb storage and move it over to internal sdcard...
You don't NEED an sdcard at all.
im trying to go through odin but all im getting is an error. i have them saved over an sd card. i guess ill look for another and try again?
Yes.
And as i said above, even if you didn't have an sdcard, Odin is not needed.
Kids worked well for me on the multiple soft bricks I did I just boot into Odin mode then you select update firm ware in options and your golden

Charging port cant root. UL okay CWM okay

So my atrix doesnt charge via wall or pc. it doesnt even get recognized by the pc. i have an external battery charger to keep the juice up. I sucessfully unlocked and flashed rom racers recovery but CANNOT get root. during the ADB shell phase of root i get the error no device connected etc. im guessing the charging port is broken, does anyone have a quick fix? thanks.
problem is the root apps wont work and im wary of flashing a custom rom without root permissions. thanks

Have your tried flashing any custom ROMS on it? If I recall, I could be totally wrong, when I put my custom recovery on the phone, it had to be rooted.
Download root checker from the market. That should tell you if you are definitely rooted or not.
If you are you can put your micro sd card in the computer with an adapter, put the custom ROM on that way, put the sd card back in the phone and flash the ROM like that. Post back when you tried root checker.

Let's clarify. You tried to install cwm, it failed and now your phone says unauthorized software take to Verizon? Your post honestly doesn't make sense. Oh and now Odin won't see your phone?
If this is correct then your phone is far from screwed up. Very common it's what happens when you don't unlock the bootloader. So let's get your phone seen by Odin. Are you in download mode? What os is your computer? Have you trired different usb ports? Are drivers installed?

You can't be on aroma. Aroma is a method used by ROM devs to allow the user to select options during install of their ROM. There are two recoveries, CWM and TWRP.
So you are seeing unauthorized software? Then your bootloader is locked, if it was unlocked then we'll figure that out later.
You should see gadget serial. Is it installing the drivers for that? How did you install drivers, Windows update our manually?

Okay, thanks for clarifying. That is a little strange then. I mean did you let Windows download the drivers for you, which you answered. You can try to put phone in download mode and keep plugging and unplugging it (give it time to recognize it first). There was a guy that said it eventually just recognized hos phone after 16 times. You did restart your computer correct?

Someone woke up on the butthurt side of bed this morning
You're most likely not bricked if it will turn on at ALL! Here's what you need to do:
1. Make sure your computer is setup with the proper drivers/ODIN.
2. Go here and download the stock ODIN image
3. Get a different USB cord you know works or try the most rearest USB port and put your phone in ODIN mode as stated above.
4. If ODIN doesn't recognize your phone, restart the computer with it plugged in and unplug it and replug it...
5. Flash ODIn in the PDA, not the Phone section (Follow the directions given by Imnuts).
That should fix you up, if it doesn't, chances are you missed a step. Good luck:victory:

You didn't win, since you don't know what you did wrong. You should read a lot more before you mess up this phone. Give it time and you probably will be in the same place again. Read, read read read read and did I mention read???? Better luck though with your new device

Well did ALL that before. Surprise none of it worked. I'm not going to repeat the same process over and over. I'm pretty sure I know why I couldn't get it to work, and I know what went wrong even though I'm not sure how managed it. And getting a new scratch free phone for no cost sounds pretty good.

If you went thru VZW and they are shipping you a new phone then it isnt new. They send out refurbished phones as replacements, I think they referr to them as CLN phones.

Can't boot up my phone. I think software issue

I was trying to install the Kit Kat ROMS on my MK2 phone using the new patches from these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674280
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2720163
I forgot that I was still on Safestrap 1.71, so I clearly am the one that messed this up. They were giving me some kind of error while I was install the patches, so I tried Restoring back to my old backup. It wouldn't boot, so I erased the Rom Slot, reinstalled it, and restored again.
I can't remember if my phone finished restoring, or if I told it to reboot, either way it shut off and I cannot get it to turn back on. The battery was fully charged, and I've been trying to turn it on with/without the battery and the charger.
I still have no idea how to get it to boot back up, so I can get Odin to find it. Fingers crossed that somebody has an idea for me?
So you tried taking the battery out for about 30 seconds. No charger plugged in. Then put the battery back In and boot into Odin mode using the keypress.
Yeah, what's the key press? Definitely possible I'm doing it wrong?

This is the button combinations you need to enter each mode.
ODIN/Download Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key(s): Volume Down
While holding this key down simultaneously press the Power button until you see a disclaimer on the screen
Then let go of both buttons and press Volume Up to accept the disclaimer
Once the green robot is visible on the screen this indicates that handset is in now ODIN/Download mode

moving to 4.4 via the leak is probably to soon as there are numerous issues to be worked out. As long as people don't mind bricking their phones in attempting to do so.....
If you can't get the phone to go into odin mode, probably will have to send to jtag service....and hope they can fix it.

So your screen is black and nothing works? Go ahead and plug your phone via USB into a Windows computer. Open Device Manager and tell me if it recognizes a device being plugged in, and what that device's name is. If you get any action on USB, there's hope.

I have a "QHSUSB_DLOAD" and an "SM Bus Controller" under the Other Devices drivers. I'm pretty sure that qhsusb is my phone. So what's your idea? It's got to be worth a try.

So there's nobody else that can flash an update to my phone? Like Verizon, or anybody that I don't have to wait weeks for?

You're in luck. We'll need an unbrick image. You'll want to download the program win32diskimager, and have a blank SD card. @Surge1223 do you have an unbrick image?
If this actually works... I got the program, and the SD card. The only thing is, should I leave my S4 in the PC? I have no idea if it's charging/wasting battery, or if it'll be seen by the computer again.

Well I think I have 512mb MK2 debrick.img but this users issue may be a tad more complicated as I believe he was one of the users attempting to upgrade to 4.4.2 with root. So he may require a 4.4.2 NC2 debrick.img depending on which of his bootloaders were written over, (considering its in qhsusb_dload we can assume aboot is toast on his device)
Luckily my bootloaders are on the 4.4.2 NC2 build so I'll make a debrick img and that might help.

Yeah, I was technically on MJ7. I went to NC2. I was way over my head when I was doing this. I'm really lost as to why I was able to restore once, it just got stuck in a boot loop.
I know I used the NC2 to MK2 downgrade patch too. I'm not entirely sure which one I used last. If there's anything else I can do to help, please let me know. Otherwise, thank you so much just for trying.

You can download the debrick.img here debrick.img you may need to ask @ryanbg for directions after that, I believe he has successfully restored his device using a debrick.img in the past.

Is there somewhere I can find mdk debrick.img or can someone give me the rundown on creating my own or link me to directions?
I already had to pay out of pocket for this phone, so yes somebody please give me some instructions on how to do this. Or a link to a forum is fine. I'm usually not an idiot, just want lazy sometimes. I want to be fully aware of what I'm doing with this. I can't stand going back to my old RAZR.

If you're device shows QHSUSB_anything, you typically can do an SD boot. What I need you to do is download that image, format your SD card in an SD card reader directly into the computer, not through your phone. Use Win32DiskImager and write the image file to your SD card. Pop it in your phone, and try turning it on or going to download mode.

Awesome. I don't have a card reader here, though. Think I can just use that program running through my old RAZR as an SD card reader, or just better to go pick up a reader? I could use one anyway, just don't want to wait.

You'll need to use an actual card reader. The phone wouldn't really let you write directly to the card.

Doesn't seem to be working... The phone still isn't turning on with the SD Card in. I plugged it back into the computer; every time I try turning the phone on, it disappears from the Driver Manager for a few seconds but it shows back up.
I can't see anything on the phone change
When I write this image to my SD Card, should it still be seen by my PC? Whenever it Writes Successfully, it disappears from my computer. I can find it in Disk Management, which is good because I can reformat it. However, it makes about 30 different volumes, and most are about 3 MB if that large.
Haven't not done this before, but having created Linux LiveCDs under Windows before this sounds about right. I would imagine the volumes are just a format that Windows doesn't recognize.
