[Q] How to unroot the Rezound? - HTC Rezound

I need to return my Rezound and swap it for another one. How do I unroot my phone properly after using HTCdev and flashing a recovery and all that? I need to return it tomorrow, just looking for someone kind enough to write a step by step guide for me on what to do, I'm sure it would help others out as well. I want to get rid of any traces. I appreciate all the help and time, thanks.

I think u go back to ur stock rom and relock ur bootloader with htc dev, and probably do a factory reset......then i would set it up n check root just to make sure its unrooted lol. Like i said "i think" but im pretty sure

How do I do all that? Right now I'm on my stock still, I'm just rooted. Don't I have to delete SU and other files? I forget how to relock my bootloader too.

As of now I am pretty sure you can't fully return it to stock. The bootloader will say re-locked instead of just locked, so basically you can return it and cross your fingers but most likely they will not honor your warranty.

fastboot oem lock <-- will relock phone.
download the latest RUU, list of offical Vigor roms in dev section. Latest is 1.02, then you are good to go.

^^^ what he said. But doing the fastboot oem lock to lock your phone will not lock your phone the way you need it to. It will say "Relocked" on the HBoot screen. Like the HTCDev website said and a bunch of posts here, once you unlock, there's no going back. Our warranty is completely voided. It will be just crossing your fingers if you try to return the phone. If you have insurance on it, you might want to just pay the deductible and get a new one that way. "Lose" your phone or "accidentally" drop it in the toilet. Good luck!

I have a light leakage problem on my phone that is very noticeable at night... I'm going to send it back arguing that it's a hardware issue and not software related... Verizon should honor that right?

I don't remember where I read it, but someone on here spoke with an HTC rep who said that using the HTCDev unlock will void our warranty regardless of what the issue is, hardware or software. I can't see, though, how they could get away with that since it's clearly nothing that you have done. I would try it anyway.

The leakage is obviously due to the LED lights that light up the red cap buttons... but I don't think that there should be any light leakage at all... its only towards the bottom... its almost as if they didn't seal it right because the right side is more noticeable than the left...

pretty sure it is the opposite. If it is an issue that clearly cannot be caused by root, HTC usually will take care of it.
Just like when calling verizon with issues sometimes, where you have to call a couple times to get someone willing to help you, I could see this being the same way.

Yeah, I agree. I just suggest the OP needs to call until he finds the answer he's looking for. The website says that "all or parts of the warranty" will be voided. I could understand if there's an issue with the processor or something. Having an unlocked bootloader means that we could mess up the processor, so they probably won't fix those issues under warranty since they couldn't tell if it was our fault. But a light leakage or sound issue is completely different. That is something that we couldn't necessarily mess up with an unlocked bootloader.

That leakage is probably going to be on every phone you get. It's been mentioned a lot on this site. There is an app you can download to toggle off the LEDs at night but I don't know what it's called. You should be able to find it with a search.

agreed. Haven't had an lcd phone yet that didn't have some light leakage. Best bet if it bothers you that much is to get a phone that has an amoled screen.

That's probably the best idea, I am pretty sure all rezounds have this issue, don't know if it's worse for others but it isn't even noticeable unless it's night and the screen is completely black.

It's called screen filter

An FYI.... Talked to Verizon... Apparently unlocking your phone voids warranty for both hardware and software related issues... That blows...
Guess I am stuck with this phone... Hope nothing goes wrong.... Love the phone though....

Can tech support tell if I'm rooted over the phone?

I have a small echo-like noise now that I hear during phone calls on my phone. I think it is a hardware issue because I don't hear it on my bluetooth headset. I called Verizon 800 number the other night because I was wondering about the 4G outage and mentioned my audio problem while I was on the phone with her. She said if I call back from another phone, tech support would connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem, and if its unfixable they would send me another Thunderbolt.
I am wondering if I need to unroot before I do this....would tech support be able to tell if my phone was rooted and thus void the warranty and not be able to do anything for me? What should I do?
Bare minimum I'd install the stock rom on there, I don't believe they would dig far enough to see if fastboot is unlocked.
As for the title question Yes, they can tell if rooted.
I don't think they can tell Cuz I called yesterday Cuz my screen is messing up they called me back on another line and wanted me to do a factory reset but didn't know that I was already on GB

The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert or anything so this is just a guess, is that they could look at the software version of the phone, and if it isn't the latest, or a previous release for this phone, then they could speculate that you are rooted, though I don't think that alone would hold up in court if it ever came to that.
When the support rep told the OP that they would "connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem", I think they were going by the standard "don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.
Can they remotely connect to our phones ? I wasn't aware that they could.

Correct, that's what they said ("don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.)
So should I still unroot to be safe before I call them or no....

If you want to be on the safe side, make a nand backup, flash a stock ROM, call them, then restore the backup. I'll pretty sure they can't tell if you have a custom recovery.

Don't know how they do it, (simple user here) and not the first time I've seen this asked or answered. If you're bored jump on every TB forum your on and I'm sure you'll find your curiosity satisfied. Maybe it was on BAMF? I could care less how they do it. (No ins here) Call technical support and ask them what rom your on and how dare they know that.

Liquid AOSP 3.2.
I unrooted just to be safe and the tech rep never said anything and I got them to send me a new sim card and if that doesn't solve my problem (which I don't think it will), then they will send me a new thunderbolt.
When I rooted again after the phone call it wouldn't let me restore my rom and I got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I had rom zip's on my sd card, so I installed one from scratch, reflashed cwm via rom mgr again, then it let me restore it.
Very weird, and I was terrified I jacked my phone up.

Hmm keep looking, I won't be at a pc till tomorrow maybe. But like I said I have no way to confirm only what I've read which is what I do. And that was second hand information. As most of this is. I'm really trying to remember because I know these site searching's are lacking at best.
I just recently used to work for at&t customer care and if vzw is anything like them, the only way they can maybe tell is if you have an unlimited data plan plus unofficial tethering app. Or if you send it in for warranty/Asurion replacement. Otherwise i don't really see how they could see in any way if it was rooted

That is understandable, thank you. Still gotta get to my pc. I know people have called in on their rooted devices for certain reasons and been called out only to deny. And of course unroot before going in. For whatever reason. Sticking to it.
That's why I asked what ROM. A support rep could simply tell the person to read them a version # that will be different than "stock".

If we (invidually) dont unlock today do you think that HTC will stop letting us tomorrow? I just dont want to kill my phone.

We individually unlock it. It's super easy. The instructions gives you screen shots of what to do. I just unlocked mine. Took about 5-10 minutes. I'm sure it will be available tomorrow but I didn't waste any time.
Tough to tell whether HTC did this on purpose or not. They very well might pull it later after they realize it/Verizon *****es them out.
I would at least go get the unlock token now, even if you don't want to use it right now.

This htcdev.com unlock will allow you to flash custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries. Sadly radios, hboot/bootloader, and I believe splash screens are a no go. Also, some things must be flashed via fastboot as opposed to recovery. (ie kernels) Considering this phone has some new security tricks not seen before its an ok trade while you wait for s-off IMO. I don't know if it will bring s-off any closer but I doubt it. I can't speak to the warranty situation but I would advise reading all the terms and conditions before proceeding. However consider this.....rooting your phone technically voids your warranty....

Yes perm root is as easy as flashing a recovery then using the recovery to flash the su and busybox binary. Then install superuser from the market and bam permanent root. (or just wait till someone makes a flashable package that will do all that for you.)

Cant Boot into Recovery?

Hey everyone!
So my rezound has a cracked screen, and I need to take it to verizon. Heres where my problem is.
I used the htc dev tools to unlock the phone and the zerg root rush method to root. I DID NOT install a custom rom. After the screen cracked, i followed nghtmr3's thread on how to UNROOT the rezound. I successfully got it to S-On, but when i attempted to install the stock rom, I could not do it. I tried to install the OTA update, but it came to the common downloading screen, but then an error pops up, and it wont complete the update.
So I tried to flash rom manager, reboot, and run recovery, but i go back to the same download and error screen.
I really just need to get superuser off so i can take it in without worries.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it, because i have been going at it for days now.
Thanks,
James
p.s. The attached picture is the updating screen. I come to this screen, but about 1/4 the way in, it comes up with a red "!" and sits there untill i battery pull.
p.s.s. I understand that i have already voided the in-house verizon warranty by having a cracked screen. And i do have the asurion insurance, but i dont want to send it to them with SU still installed, as i have heard that they will send it back.

Rooting your phone does not automatically void the warranty. It MAY void the warranty. A cracked screen shouldn't be a problem.

Or stick it in the microwave.

why do we need to unlock bootloader to root?

sorry im just a little confused. ive had multiple android devices all which have been rooted and not all of them have had the bootloader unlocked. now this is my first htc product so im not really familiar with s-off. but i bought this phone thinking there were going to be lots of devs and everything working on it and this has killed my plans . i know patience is a virtue . i was just curious. i mean droid razrs have plenty of roms available and they are still on a locked bootloader
It all has to do with the exploit used to root the device. HTC has to have an unlocked bootloader so that you can use the bootloader to write the root files to the system folder.

No, it's gonna flood my brain, since it's always thunderstorming. Maybe electrocute it, with the lightning.
Coming from the thunderbolt, it was easy to get to my bootloader, power button + volume down. How does one get to the bootloader on the incredible 4g?

same way, let it off for awhile then try if it doesn't pull battery and then try, it works
And turn off fast boot in Settings/Power.
i ended up rebooting, and just holding the power + volume down. that worked for me
to answer the og poster
if you have an unlocked b/l you can flash a custom recovery img which allows you to then flash a root package in that recovery
there is no current working exploit manually root the stock rom otherwise
Hmm. I just got the blank email from HTC. I hadn't yet tried unlocking today, and received it after 9pm. I tried, but it was to no avail. I was hoping HTC was secretly sending out emails for those who had repeatedly tried, trying to help them out.

Sooo if I decide not to keep can I return it

Soooo...really like the phone so far but not in love with it yet....thinking about maybe returning it if it doesn't grow on me....long story short it's unlocked and rooted running custom firmware....now i did make a stock nandroid before flashing anything....so can I flash back to the stock nandroid and just relock it and it will be ok? Will att give me a hard time and or know it was tampered with?..I would hate to have the next potential phone owner not be warrentied because of me unlocking it....

As long as you can restore it to bone stock and you just tell them you decided it's not the phone for you, you might be able to. I've heard of people returning unlocked and re-locked phones before without any problems, but they could tell you to keep it if they want to look closely and decide to hold firm on that you're technically voiding the warranty by unlocking.

Yeah I can return it stock thanks to my nandroid...but I'm just wondering if att is really that smart....I'm mean correct me if I'm wrong but once I relock that tampered notice disappears right? So I'm just wondering how they would even know I guess....or I guess I could just sell the phone too if need be
