[Q] Link2sd Problem Help :( - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Help please, this is the second time I faced this problem. The first time I faced this, I did a complete data wipe and reinstalled everything again from fresh. The problem is after using link2sd for some time, it comes to a time that link2sd is not able to link any more apps even though my 2nd partition has 300mb+ free space. An example of error:
create_link.com.dj.golocker.theme.icecream:cannot create /data/sdext2/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected]: read-only file system
Similar errors occur for any further apps I try to install, it's like link2sd has reached it's limit of linking apps. However the apps that are already linked are all working fine, just can't link any apps any further. I don't want to do another data wipe and reinstall all my apps again..it's so tiring.. Please help anyone?

Try using root explorer to navigate to the directory and manually mount it as r/w.

Can you explain more? I'm not really familiar with mounting using root explorer, but I do have root explorer.

I tried going to data/sdext2 and try clicking on Mount R/W on the top but nothing happens, it supposed to change to R/O right? It remains Mount R/W

No. Leave it as r/w. Try re-booting, check what it is mounted as (if it's r/w, leave it. If it is r/o, try changing it) then try linking again.

What I meant is, it's r/o as default, but when I click on mount as r/w, it doesn't change. it remains as r/o

Mine changes perfectly. Do you have the latest Superuser app and binary installed?

I'll try that, thanks for responding to my problem I'll let you know if it fixes the problem

I have updated superuser binary and the problem still persists. I guess I might just do a data wipe and reinstall everything again.

[Q] AdFree not working on XT720?

Can some one verify this?
it installs, it runs, it can download updates... but, it comes up with the error
"Failed to remount system partition read-only"
it works fine on my other Android phones.
working without any problem on my phone.
that is the weird thing, i don't understand
it was working fine before today (i just reflashed the ROM, to remount the app2sd properly)
so it's really weird, and it's a fresh install from Market

yes it is rooted, else Titanium Backup will not work, same goes for Quick Reboot
when you formated your card did you take ownership of the partition? if you did it will require superuser access. (if you did that you have to re format the partition)if not try opening your super user app and check to see if the app has been denied
Sent from my Milestone XT720 using XDA App
seems like that was the problem, i re-did the whole app2sd thing, since i had to factory format the phone
it's working now, no more read only error

[Q] Installing apps through an apk, HELP!

Recently when I put APK's on my SD Card and try to install them I receive the 'Application not Installed' error. When this happens with market apps it's easy enough to unmount the SD and remount after the install. However if the APK is on the SD how can I do this?
Is there a fix for this? Also if it helps I'm running the Wildpuzzle ROM and the APK I'm trying to install at the moment is Angry Birds (getjar).
Have you try settings > application and check Unknown application.

Yeah, the application installer shows up, I just receive the error message a few seconds of the scrolling grey progress-style/working bar.
Do you have a USB Cable? Try using "DroidExplorer", an awesome PC client that can directly install apps. Or, try using a File Browser like Root Explorer or Super Manager.
Do you, by chance, have an App2SD Patch? Because I have always found them buggy!
Try to "undo" everything you did up to before it stopped working. Also try formatting your cache partition and/or erasing dalvik cache. Did you do any flashing without making a NANDROID backup first?
Also try "SuperOneClick", there is an option to "Enable Non-Market Apps" for rooted phones.
Second-last resort? Factory reset. Last resort...? Backup all your apps/settings and reflash

Thanks for this. I'm trying Droidexplorer, explorers on the device wont install the apk as it returns the same error.
How long should the installation take. It's been running 15 mins so far, the internal storage has decreased a little but the installing window (on pc) is still up?
I am assuming you have a rooted phone with unrEVOked3 right? Would you happen to have some kind of App2SD patch installed....? Because I always found them unstable.... what firmware are you using? I am loyal to Sunaabh v1.1 (Froyo) Custom Firmware as it is well supported
Hmmm I've encountered that installing loop before. But only when trying to install an APK that wouldn't normally work, such as an older version of the Market or Flash 10.1. It just means it's waiting for ADB server to do something but ADB has obviously crashed. It should not take more than 30 seconds for an APK to install via DroidExplorer. Just unplug your phone and close DroidExplorer.
Does this happen with all APK's? How many have you tried?
Only thing I can think of is that you did something to damage your package.xml data and/or permissions are corrupted.
Did you try formatting your cache partition in Clockworkmod? Please try this, it will not destroy any data. But it will trigger a long reboot - it will appear frozen at the bootup splash screen but just let it go while it rebuilds the cache.
Also try "Clear Data" under Applications > Manage > Market.
Have you flashed anything in clockworkmod? If you can provide more details of exactly what you've done to your phone that might help, but I really doubt it.... I think the only option is to restore from a Nandroid Backup or Reflash Sorry... but these things do happen and we always learn the hard way lol....
You can use the official HTC Sync software to backup your phone numbers and SMS and stuff I believe, and if you want to backup your installed apps you can use Titanium Backup or many other Backup apps on the Market, Free or Paid.
Make into a zip file and flash via recovery

Thanks for everyones help, I now have it sorted!
I started an installation through Droid explorer and then cancelled it when the apk was on the phone.
Then I unmounted my SD
Then I used root explorer to browse to the apk on the phones internal memory
It installed with no worries and I remounted the SD!

Haha, how very odd! Regardless, good to hear you got it sorted
EDIT: If it happens again, maybe you could try to format the SD card. Might be possessed with some bad stuff in the .android_secure folder or something.

Look at /system/etc/customisation and /system/etc/product.for bloatware.
You can simply delete the apps you don't want from /system/app but be carful not to delete one that is needed by system.
Any app you want to survive reset copy to /system/app with permissions 644

Did you mount /system RW? (open the sidebar where you enabled root access with the menu button, scroll down to "root explorer" and click it instead of its on/off button, select the remount option, change / and /system to RW)

Ah thank you .. Easier with root explorer . Moving an app to system/app will get that app installed right away when reset ?

Well, it just won't be removed
But it will also break the app if it uses external libraries, use Link2SD "convert to system app" that will do the hard job itself if needed

Titanium backup has some sort of same option right convert to system app. And if I remove all from/system/app it won't be installed next time I reset? I hope so and how do I make some apps install themselves when phone is reset

Files has permissions, like files on windows do, 644 = owner can read and weite, group can read, other can read.
To delete/copy file from/to /system you need RootExplorer o FX explorer with root add-on.
If you "remove everything from /system/app" as you said you'll end up with an unusable OS
Factory reset doesn't touch /system anyway, if you're looking for an easy way to have your apps back when you switch ROMs the closest thing is keeping the apks on your computer and installing them with adb...

Have you set permission to app r/o after moving to system.
@Ashwinrg
I was trying to change permissions of moved apps (following to some guides found on Google) but that didn't help. Maybe i was doing something wrong. I even tried to mount system partition as R/W with Root Essentials but without results.

if i use titanium backup then when i covert that app to system app 'please wait..' goes on and goes on.after waiting long time i closed titanium backup and rebooted. when i check that app it actually got converted into system app. but then when i try to delete this app or any other system app with titanium backup or link2sd both app shows uninstall was succesfull but actually app didnt get uninstalled. I think someyhing is restricting them to modify system.
Please give me any solution bro.

Then directly uninstall the app through the system using Root explorer (paid app) / mixplorer
Or you can use ADB method
Code:
adb shell
cd system/app
ls
(Search the app package then)
rm example.apk

Im not sure.
I came to that problem before in SLIMrom
I think it is something to do with mounting the /system at root. But problem persist so i changed ROM.
I tried running this command in terminal
1) Open terminal
2) Type "su" (enter)
3) Type "mount -o remount,rw /system" (enter)
Maybe it will work for you

when i type that command in terminal the exact same error is given as response in terminal. here you are saying you also got that error(atleast i am not the only one) and changing rom fixed that error as i also tried reinstalling official miui rom in place of my current xiaomi.eu rom but in that rom too i am getting same error.
Does it have something to with twrp. because in 'mount' in twrp 'system' is always unmounted, even if i mount the system it again gets unmounted.
And many many thanks for your reply. please give me another suggestion bro.

The way I'd fix the error is to wipe the /system , after that, i made a decision to change ROM.
So yet again, i did a clean flash.
About the mounting problem, you probably got into that situation due to the fact that is something wrong with the system permission hence you got that error.
If you decided to go with the official MIUI, make sure to wipe everything (except internal/external) before flashing the ROM.
