upgtading from hp touchpad into asus prime... worth it? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I have been sporting a HP touchpad for some time now (with cyanogen hack). Now I have an Asus on the ups truck. I am aware of all the possible issues with the prime etc... and we all know touchpad with cyanogen ain't perfect either.. so the question is (IGNORING THE PRICE DIFF), is the change from one to the other worth IT? I am assuming it is a sound and clear yes... butthem again, with altheissues it mightnit besuch a clear answer...any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I would say yes! more apps and a much faster device!!! Just order from a store you can return the tablet with no problems. (like Best Buy)

I wanted this tablet so bad!!

I wanted this tablet so bad but it looks like I've finally made the decision to wait for the next powerful tablet. I've never seen so many MAJOR problems with a tablet release. Asus really took a dump with this one. So much so that I will never purchase anything from them until it is confirmed to be working as it should. I'm a realist and I understand that most electronics are not perfect during the first couple of weeks after a release but the problems I see multiple people reporting are getting out of hand. This device is beyond having a bug here and there. Asus should have done themselves a favor and not rushed this thing into the hands of so many unsuspecting consumers. I really do feel sorry for some of you as Asus clearly ripped you off. They should give everyone their money back and pull all shipments.
If you could go back and do it all over again, would you have purchased this tablet?

I'm one of the few who has a completely bricked tablet as a result of the ICS update. If I knew then what I know now...
I would still buy it in a heartbeat.
This tablet is absolutely amazing. I had it for 4 days in working order, never had an issue with wifi strength, bluetooth, or even GPS lock. The only problem I've had is that the OTA to ICS "didn't take," for whatever reason, and now I'm stuck with a boot-looping paperweight.
But these things happen. I'm not in a rush to return it. I'm not even in a rush to RMA it. I'm sure that ASUS will come up with a fix in due time, probably something I can push over USB. If not, I'll RMA it.
The thing is thin, fast, and beautiful. There's an even more beautiful one coming out in Q2? Great, I'll buy that too, and then my girlfriend can have the shiny new (to her) TF201 she's already been drooling over. =)
Had mine since Dec. 23rd, wifi works same as my phone (what I would consider working), GPS only works outside (don't really need it), but I'm more than happy with it and plan on keeping it until I want to sell it for the next one.
Edit: So to answer the question yes I would do it over again.

I think you're talking about the TF700T. That tablet looks ugly IMO, sure it will have better reception than the current TFP, but TFP look sleek with it's metal housing and from the looks of the TF700T won't likely carry the Transformer Prime name with ASUS still in legal dispute over the 'Transformer' name with HASBRO.
TF201 is going to be one rare sought out tablet, once the supply of this drys up, and ASUS only release the TF700T instead.
Imagine that, the only metal designed tablet.
(yes this is ignoring all the faults that we know a metal cased tablet brings, but still. )
Time may prove me wrong on this, but I have a feeling that the backplate shown at CES will not be the final version, and was merely a concept rushed out for the show, as if to say "see? Plastic!"
And we'll see about the Prime name. At this point they could call it the Eee Bieber and I'd still buy it.
On second thought, let's not get carried away...
I've had it for 2 1/2 weeks now and am still within my return period (1 month). Even with annoying WiFI issues, I'm still keeping it, so yes, I would obviously buy it again.
With that said, the main reason I'm keeping it is b/c there's currently nothing comparable available and I want a tablet now. I certainly won't be buying any products from Asus ever again in the future.

[Q] I would like to buy it but...

Hello, I live in Italy and here this tablet should come in the last week of January. (It should come with ICS pre-installed)
I would like to buy it but before I would like to know the problems it has...
I read a lot about it, and understood that is haveproblems with GPS (not a problem for me).
There are other problems on that tablet?
The only thing I really need is Wifi, is it ok?
Battery life is ok?
Thankyou so much for all replies...
Battery life is good for me & so is wifi..Get the keyboard dock too.
Thankyou... If the only problem is GPS I think I will buy it, but without keyboard. I can't wait...
correct, the only major issue is GPS.
there's a thread here somewhere that details all the current issues and how severe of an issue they are, might be worth reading.
but personally, i'm very happy with the tablet.
im really confuse i heard it has wifi and bluetooth issues again (like cut it half speed and getting slow speed) coz of metal back and even also transformer prime discontinued?
it isnt discontinued. Asus always has problems keeping their stuff in stock.
Bluetooth I cant confirm or deny, but the WiFi problems are... wel not that big of a problem.
Desire Z has 3 bars vs Prime with 2 bars.

Over all this is really a good buy! I had my first one back in Dec 19th and it has a problem with the screen, I had to return it back. I ordered another Prime and I love it!! it has no problem everything working good wifi #1 thing with me and if it has any issue with wifi I will never keep it. GPS has issue (I really did not buy it for this) I have a smartphone so no problem for me!
I really hope you get one and enjoy it!
Good luck
I hard about WiFi range problems, what is the situation? Is on all devices? It is software or hardware issue and it William ne fixed?
Look, you are going to get a lot of different opinions here so my suggestion for you is to buy one from a store that will let you return the tablet if there are any problems. That way you can judge it for yourself. If you like it, keep it. If you think it sucks just return it. Easy
I'm from Italy too. I don't know if i'll buy tf201 or not, but if i'll buy it then will be difficult that a store will accept return and refund.
Asus Italy says that prime had less range with wifi than tf101, this is the only real problem of this device.

Yes, I think it will be better to buy it in a physical store, so it will be easier to return it...
Here in Italy the release date has been posticipated tue to WiFi problems, this means they are trying to fix it? Or they was only rumors?

Buy or Not?

I like the TF201 because I want a tablet with a docking keyboard AND because its thin, light and has excellent battery.
Here are my questions:
1. Is there any other tablet with a good keyboard dock? I dont want bluetooth ones that drain the battery.
2. There has been news about the aluminum back causing WiFi issues. Is this true? (I dont care about GPS).
Please answer these questions and I think I would know whether to buy the tablet or not. The news about all the issues is a little scary and mixed reviews dont help. So I need to hear from real users and get some opinions.
I have the regular Transformer (not Prime) and it is pretty much identical in form factor.
I love mine, but my Prime is at the local UPS and will be delivered tomorrow. I'm giving my original Transformer to my wife, but am very reluctant to part with it before my keyboard comes in. I've gotten spoiled.
So if the form factor is what you're primarily interested in, you can save $100 or so by going with the OG Transformer. The only real difference is the Prime is a Tegra 3 SoC (4 cores +1) and the OG is a Tegra 2 (2 cores).

And roll the dice on quality control issues.
I'm not telling him NOT to do it, but I am advising him to make an informed decision. Buying a Prime 4 months from now, after the GPS and WiFi issues have been resolved (now that we know to curse the pogo pins) would be a much smarter move. Especially if he has someone to bequeath the OG Transformer to.
Or w8 for 2 months ans buy whatever awesome 4core comes out!

WAIT!!
I can only tell you that I am waiting until more of the bugs are worked out, and only if then, will I consider repurchasing the TF201.
It appears from this forum that Asus is already shipping the 3rd revision of this product and still has issues. My wife ordered mine for Christmas and it didn't arrive until after the new year. I couldn't wait to receive it and was frustrated that others were receiving theirs while I was still waiting. When I finally received it, I thought I lucked out receiving the 2nd HW revision, however I was disappionted with wifi performance and the browser kept locking up. I tried contacting Asus support but could not get a response. How Asus handled the GPS issue by repackaging the product without GPS support gave me concern that they would handle other issues in a similar manner, such as low wifi performance. I ended up returning the TF201 while I still could as that path was easier than trying to escalate my issues at Asus and potentially never have my issues fixed.
Even with these problems, I am continuing to monitor this board in hopes that the situation improves, Asus fixes the issues, and puts in a support system. Currently all support seems to be handled by one marketing manager who is making posts on this board. If the TF201 issues can be resovled, the product has the potential of being a great tablet. Sooner or later I will either repurchase the TF201 or purchase something else that comes along.
I hope this was helpful.
Good Luck
I am on the same boat as you guys, been monitoring this forum for several months and just waiting for the right time to get the Prime, i wont be staying in the US long enought to get the T700 nor the Lenovo/Acer tablet unless they will start selling in early March..
As far as I know there is no other tablet that has the nice matching dock like this(other than the original transformer).
I would buy one when you can find it at a local Best Buy or somewhere with a similar return policy. Try it out for a day and return it if you don't like it. I promise if you get one without problems you will love it.
I use my dock maybe 10% of the time and usually it's just as a portable battery charger. I thought I would use it all the time but have found I enjoy sitting on the couch with the tablet alone in a nice case. I am glad I got the dock but the more I use the tablet the more I realize I would probably still be happy without it. I had to buy 4 Primes to get a good one, they all had screen issues (not screen bleed but other issues). So the fact I don't use the dock too much will probably influence my next tablet purchase....it most likely won't be an ASUS. I have had good luck with Samsung and HTC phones so I will look there first. Having said that, it is the best tablet available right now if you get a good one.
Yep. . . follow the thread on the GPS Contact issues. This POGO connector issue is, imho, a design problem that is going to make it possible/likely that GPS and WIFI will be troublesome. These connectors make it easy for movement, corrosion, etc. to create new problems at random times.
I sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 so I could purchase the TP but about to return it for the following reasons:
1. Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth issues. A quick search will tell you all you need about this.
2. Screen issues - I have backlight bleeding and several stuck pixels. Doesn't seem uncommon for this device and didn't experience this at all on my GTab. Also, I prefer the more vibrant screen on the GTab.
3. Only one speaker. This is a usability issue for me where you have to adjust your grip on the tab in order to not affect the sound level/quality.
For me, these combined are deal breakers. If none of these bother you, then I'd say buy it because aside from the issues I mentioned, its a well constructed tablet that has amazing performance (Tegra3 and ICS are killer) and has all the inputs you'll need.
I'll drop in and say.. go for it. I haven't had any huge issues with my [CG] Prime. I suppose I got lucky with the all the quality control issues (it arrived about a week ago [via Amazon], I'd guess my unit is byond the first batch and Asus has started to address the issues). I just got my [CG] dock yesterday [via TigerDirect], and I love having both.

Ok, here I go....
1. Wifi/GPS/BT issues: Wifi/BT is currently being fixed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443868
Gary key(Asus Rep) informed us that there are 2 different solutions being worked on and would be early Feb for a fix. Most likely through firmware update. GPS works! Searching will lead you to of course more negetive posts then positives. People seek answers to there issues! So finding posts like... I love my Prime woo hoo! is harder to come by because people don't generally posts Positive things.
2. Screen issues: All tablets are victums to this. It's not just the Prime. I had a SGT 10.1 that I returned for the Prime. It had Screen bleeding and stuck pixels!
3. Only one Speaker: wrong there is 2 speakers and they are stereo speakers. Actually much louder and more vibrent then the origenal Transformer.
If you take the time to read and search for answers. You will often find that it isn't that big of an issue. More people are satisfied with their Primes. Go ahead and return your prime. I'm sure you'll regreat it down the line. If not good for you.

I'm well informed on this tablet and its issues and not really concerned whether or not others are satisfied with their device. My decision is based on how well the device works for me.
RE: #1 - I've been following that thread and not willing to gamble my $500 on an expected fix 'sometime in February'. No guarantee it will come in that timeframe, nor that it will fix it when it does come.
RE: #2 - I've read many more reports of screen issues on the TP than GT. Also, while I like the screen on the TP, I feel the GT has a better one.
RE: #3 - The TP has stereo speakers but only projects the audio from one side of the tablet. Put your hand in the wrong spot and you will find the audio quality degraded. Not the best design choice.
To the OP...as I've said before, this is a nice tablet. These issues were dealbreakers for me, but you need to decide for yourself.
@jjdevega - Enjoy your tablet and good luck with the Wifi.
Thanks a lot for all the replies. Here is what I can conclude.
1. Only the transformer and transformer prime have the keyboard dock and battery. No other tablet does this.
2. Issues are mixed. Some got lucky, some got the bad one.
Purchase dates from people would be helpful to track if issues are resolved in later units. If so, at what point in time.

Thanks. Looks like you have the latest revision and things seem to be fixed.
I bought mine few days ago and I feel like I have one of the newer revisions, I have no issues with anything. If you buy one now that you are sure of is unopened and new stock you will prolly be fine.
I just received my first TP today, and I should be getting my second sometime next week. No issues at all with my current one. I'm actually trading my 16GB Tab 10.1 and some cash for a second Prime to try Roms and whatnot once they start showing up.

Yep, well put, that's how it works best.

G Key let us keep warranty unlocked look @Acer

TITLE SAYS IT ALL
let us keep warranty and unlock the prime with flash recovery such as NVFlash to repair to stock, look @Acer they are doing that for their customers out of the box with a510. Why can't we get same sevices after all we have been through. It would be a nice gesture.
Thanks for dongle but really doesn't make up for built in gps, the slick looking Prime aint so slick when someone asks " whats that thing on your tablet".
PLUS FIX BROWSER WOULD BE NICE, and in my situation after .21 WiFi is killing my battery, dont know why. My settings are the same as before update.
AN UPGRADE PATH TO THE 700 WOULD BE NICE. Considering people are getting pretty much the same device we have with the (300 Pad) and for much less. Most Primes dont even operate as they are suppose to yet, there are still some issues, and Asus releases a lower end tablet that so far has had nothing but good feedback with no issues. Take care of the ORIGINAL PRIME OWNERS.

That is Correct. I just picked up a tf300t lastnight at best buy. I was originally going to the store to get the tf201 but to my surprise they handed me a tf300t. I said wtf?... this is not a PRIME. He said it's the latest and greatest. Well after getting home and setting it up with (NO PROBLEMS) at all it ran pretty nice and smooth. The gps took about 2-3 to get it's first fix "indoors" I should add but it went well. The next test was wifi and it to was no problem. pretty soon after came an ota update but no problems. I went outside to test wifi and video streaming 100+ feet from wifi source "deep in my brick house" kept up nicely. a few gliches with video pausing but I fixed that with a mobo video player from the Market... errrr Play Store. Battery doest last 10 hours either... maybe 7 hours after 2 full charges of 3-4= hours each. I only had this 24 hours roughly and am somewhat impressed... <--Hard to Impress. Other than the slightly lower spec's than the tf201 it's solid so far with no lock up's. Am dieing to test the TF700 thou with really, really really impressive... OK I'm Impressed nice spec's.
P.S. One problem. A video glitch running Battery Snap, the video started stuttering and hard to back out. eventually did and a reboot fixed that.

Right, thats why I will be making a better decision next time. I really like the prime when it runs like it is suppose to.
I wont be buying the 700, why really its a tegra3 device, I already have a tegra3 now. My decision will be when next years Asus comes out. It will be hard to give them my money again. If they dont do right I will Probably be going back to Sammy tabs, yeah they dont update as much but they dont have to, my Samsung GTab 10.1 ran flawless for 9 months. It just got outdated when tegra3 came out.
+1. i will never buy any Asus device ever again. From them sweeping the GPS under the rug and giving us a half ass dongle that wont work with the keyboard dock... Dont get me started on the poor wifi... I travel a lot and i can never get any reception on this Prime...but i also travel with an iPad and that has no issue connecting to those same networks. I love andriod but some of these manufactures need to do better QC'ing before they release to the public.
+1 to the better unlocking and nvflash
i would love to unlock my device, but don't want to loose ALL warranty.. especially with no nvflash
wifi, i have managed to live with after going out and purchasing 2 new routers to give decent wifi signal all around the house
it was a little disappointing though, as my old and very cheap advent vega tablet was able to stream videos anywhere in the house without issue when i only had a single router
Having our device fully unlocked would be a cool thing.
But first they should get all the software issues straightened out. I thought asus is good with updates and so far there were quite a few updates but they didnt fix the issues or fixed one but introduced another.
I'm perfectly happy with my prime its all about software now and if they chose not to make it fully unlockable i expect PERFECT software. The easier way of course would be to let the community make the perfect roms by just open everything up...
Unlocked boot loader would be a great way of doing justice to their buyers, the reason we choose android is freedom, it sucks when it is taken away.
grant us nvflash and warranty and im a happy little boy
never going to happen. ill choose wiser next time i spend $650.

Asus, my nuts. Do the math.
i will never buy an asus product again if things dont get worked out soon.
Totally agree. In had the tf101 and LOVED IT. I upgraded to the prime and still love it. But Asus, you need to clean up your act. Take note from manufactures like HTC. They fully unlock boot loaders and only partially void your warranty. After all the issues your "RIGOROUS" tests failed to catch, at least give us a fully unlocked boot loader with nv flash. That is not too much to ask, especially since you already voided are warranties.
I already decided to move on and away from Asus products. I have my Acer A510 that was cheaper and everything works on it flawlessly, and I had it rooted on the day it arrived from Amazon. My Prime now just sits around collecting dust till one of my kids decides to pick it up to play some of the Nintendo games on it, cause it's mainly used by my kids to play games on it now.
I'm just trying to look out for the Prime owners here I think we all deserve at least to be able to customize our device without losing our warranty. I don't think the original post was out of line, to be honest. We have been through the mud with this unit. Some people are happy they have Primes but they probably don't have any issues with it. I can see why they are happy on the other hand some of us have had issue from day one, and still have issues that aren't fixed, such as the ones stated in original post. I can say Mine isn't as bad as some on here its probably 90% operational but after giving you, Asus $650 of my money it should be 100% operational after 5 or 6 months IMO.
Thats All.

I thought about it but don't see a reason to buy 2 Tegra3 tablets, my decision will be different when Tegra4 or the next Mali from Sammy comes out. I like the Prime if they would just get it together, damn its been what 5 or 6 months. Give us something to show you understand the pains we went through with this unit. The GPS was a good gesture but it just doesn't fix all the wrongs and everything that we have had to deal with for a half year now.
Did someone even PM the man about this thread?
I would also like a fully unlocked bootloader, nvflash (which is getting near, it seems process of releasing nvflash is getting into negotiations, check one of the official asus threads by him), and access to hardware warranty. If nvflash is given to us with full permissions, and our bootloader is fully unlocked, i would definately feel obliged to congratulate asus despite being a company that puts us all through with a device that works fully for some, while others taste bad rma service and faulty design related issues (noticed a few days that my tablet is becoming bent from being connected to the dock, the aluminium back cover which is pretty but it seems that wifi is weaker because of that as well...) - i would enjoy my device much more.
i would even be fine if they removed tablets back cover and replaced it with other material, painted in the same color than the rest, to have stronger wifi. my tfp doesn't have "gps" written on the case, so i couldn't complain about that, even though i read in the device's spec sheet that it had gps when i searched about it. i almost don't use it, i'm pretty much about 2 locations right now: work/home.
i could go out, have this one rma'ed, buy another tablet like acer latest, once this one comes back evaluate if i should sell it, depending on factors described above. but i don't want to. i want to keep this, as it is a good machine, and with bootloader fully unlocked+nvflash+dualboot native linux/android, it would be sweet to have powerful wifi.
edit: and.. one other thing: no software is perfect, i'm afraid to disapoint you. it can always be improved.

Onlive

Has anyone else been having low-graphics "problems" with the Onlive gaming service? I tried 2 games (Darksiders and Dirt 3) and both of them had really low quality image, especially the Dirt 3. Do you have any suggestions how to make the graphics better, or is there any way to do it? (connection speed shouldn't be a problem, have my transformer connected to a 100mb/s Wifi, so it's going the max it's wifi port enables)
I included some photos of my screen.
E: Original problem/post in the quotes (thanks for the help once again)
Hey,
I was looking at some transformer prime videos from youtube and saw this cool app called Onlive which I found useful for our tablet. Sadly I live in Finland where it cannot be downloaded for whatever reasons..
So my question is: could anyone give me the proper apk? Or tell me where I could download/buy it?
Thanks!

You should try contacting onlive. I have the same problem. On my xperia play, the quality is great.

I think it depends on the time of the day. I play onlive on my tf300t at work sometimes during lunch around noon and then on my break around 2:30 and it's a llittle choppy sometimes. BUt at least it still runs. Connection sucks at home sometimes. I know it is better on my PC though. But I notice after work if I go in the break room it's PERFECT. So it could be peak hours.
As long is it doesn't freeze or come up with the message about connection not strong enough. That killed me when I first tried playing it at home. I always had to pause it as soon as I sensed lag. Otherwise i'd die.
My lag senses were tingling.
Response that I got:
Good Day,
Thank you for the screen shot. We do use video compression to stream our games, so the quality will be different than playing a game locally.
I suggest keeping your network as clean as possible when accessing our App. Be sure that no other apps are running and no other devices are connected to the same wifi network, if possible.
If you have any other questions or need further assistance, just let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Have a lovely day!
