Hi, I'm quite familiar with the SGS2 and rooting, Oc/uv, voltage control, custom toms, etc.
I just rooted my dad's wifi only 10.1, and installed galaxy task 10.
One of the reasons I did so was to decrease the charging time of the tab on stock ROM. Unfortunately, it's the same thing with the custom rom.
What else can I do to decrease charging time? Are there specific kernels that are charging optimized and stable? Do 10.1 wifi only roms and kernels support voltage control and if yes, what settings would you suggest?

Sounds awesome, but I don't think anyone has done anything with that yet. Maybe one of the ROM devs, but I've never seen anything.
best way to charge faster is to turn off the tab

epic 4g touch SGs2
I think the battery drain, slow charging and occasional lag on the 10.1 is holding it back.
I don't like the ipad and I hate apples business model, but I have to say it's a sleeker tablet atm.
I thought custom roms and kernels and rooting might address this issue with the 10.1 and unleash its true potential

Agreed the tab is slow to charge, but honestly, even with heavy use, streaming audio, browsing, playing games, downloading, etc I can get 1.5 or so days off a full charge. Definitely can't do that with any smartphone I've had.
And even though we're OT with the performance of the Tab and what's holding it back, I really think the Tegra 2/Honeycomb Rom are what are holding it back. It's not a good combo and neither of the two are impressive by themselves, let alone put together.

I got the 10.1 for my dad as a birthday gift. He loves it and takes it everywhere and loves showing it off to my ipad toting relatives.
But his chief complaint is how long it takes to charge. Sometimes he doesn't use it as much as he'd want to cause it takes so long to charge.
I just rooted his phone and installed galaxy task 10, so I'll see if that helps charging a bit.
Too bad I can't use voltage control to increase charging current. I've looked around the subforum and there's no information on kernels that support voltage control.
With regards to the lag issue, that's more my concern. Compared to my SGS2 which is buttery smooth even with many widgets and live wallpapers, the 10.1 just seems to struggle so much more. With the stock ROM, the tablet was almost impossible to use with a live wallpaper. Compared to my friend's asus transformer, it is still laggy too, leading me to believe it's probably a rom or tw ui issue.
Task 10 has improved the lag issue immensely but it is still there.

True. The problem with my dad is he has no spare socket in his room and has to charge along our hallway. And I don't want him leaving the tab in the hallway for 5-7 hours.

You are right, however, I'm using the stock ROM with ADWlauncher EX and I can use live wallpaper without any problem
I don't have any lag and everything is smooth.

It depends on the appliances that are being fed by the dual plugs. 5 hairdryers are not a good idea. 5 Galaxy Tabs are no problem. Just add the amps of all appliances and don't overload the fuse or either of the plugs.
The charging time depends on the capacity of the battery divided by the amperage of the charger. The battery of the SGT holds 7Ah (=7000mAh), the charger delivers a maximum of 2A. Under ideal conditions it would take 7Ah / 2A = 3.5 hours to charge the completely empty battery. Since battery charging processes are never ideal (current drops during charging cycle) this time will be exceeded. This is a fact that can't be addressed by software. It's physics. More than 2A via standard USB-Plugs and wiring are "not advisable". So Samsung set the specs accordingly.
The "voltage control" you are talking about changes processor voltage and not charging aspects. You might be able to get half an hour more battery lifetime out of the tab but you're not going to speed up charging.

Thanks for the informative post.
One correction though, voltage control can change charging current aside from other things if the Kernel supports it.

So, after being an iPhone user for a while, I've finally talked myself in to making the plunge and going for android and the SGSII seems to be the best handset available at the moment. I just have a few general questions that I would like answers from you guys who know.
Firstly, when rooting and flashing ROM's does it matter if you have a white or a black version? I still havnt decided which one to get but if this is the case id prob go with whichever one is supported more.
Secondly, battery life. Can you guys give me some real life battery stats? My iPhone 4s usually goes 12 hours then it needs charged. This would normally have around 5/6 hours of actual usage and thats with brightness set to virtually nonexistant in the settings. Would the SGSII be equal to or not far off that? I've seen theres an extended battery pack available too, does that make a huge difference?
Thanks

For rooting / custom rooms black or white doesn't matter. Important is model no. like i9100 international version or AT&T version etc. most roms and customization support i9100 international version.
I have both. SGS2 and iPhone 4s. Battery life is almost similar. On standby sgs2 gives me more time. but no big difference in practical use as per my requirements. SGS2 will last a day at least if you are a heavy user like me.

Well I'll be buying my SGSII from o2-UK. Not quite sure what version it will be. The Apps i used the most are messages apps. like Whatsapp and on the iPhone it drains battery for fun!
I was originally going to go for the Galaxy Nexus. But after seeing it in the plastic/glass it wasn't as nice as I'd expected.
I'd get the Galaxy Nexus over the Galaxy SII. Just my 2 cents.
Welcome to the land of freedom and variety!
No, colour doesnt matter, both have the same hardware, the ONLY diff is the physical housing.
Battery life should be around the same as a 4S, i can get a full day and ahalf with moderate use and around 10hours with heavy usage.

It will be a i9100 if you get it from O2 UK.
I get between 4 and 7 hours of screen on time, upto a few days of standby time, might only lose 3-10% ish over a 9h sleeping night (when i forget to plug my phone in) (idle usage will also depend if the phone is being woken up all the time, theres a great app called better battery stats - see sig - to help find out whats causing the problems)
The big factors are:
* Type of usage, 3D gaming will use more power than texting
* Data usage, wifi uses less power than 3G
I would get the 2000mAh battery, better life, not much thicker (though it does mess with some cases), and as its an official battery you know its not fake.
I would get the nexus myself, ICS + updates from google = win.
Though the SGS2 has one of the best non nexus dev communities (imo of cause).
In general, read lots of guides if you are going to mess around with your £300 slab of electronics

As long as the USB stick is fat32 (limits file size to 2GB).
Yeh, it sounds awesome, but I have never found the need, 32GB SD card ftw! (Also MHL adaptor, when my computer was in for repairs, I plugged my phone into my monitor, headphones plugged into phone, and used it as a media player, FTW! Shame we cant do USBOTG and MHL at the same time)
The nexus is more expensive, and not really "faster" than the SGS2, the only thing is a stock ICS look.
I was going to flog my SGS2 to move to the nexus, but then by bank balance told me to stop being a twit and use a ICS theme while I wait

I wouldn't leave my GS2 for a Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus has awful batt life, crap camera, weaker GPU and no memory card slot.
USG-OTG (On The Go) is the feature you are talking about, where you plug in a usb stick.
MHL is the tech used by the GS2 to do HDMI via the USB Port. Hopefuly someone can better explain MHL than i just did though, lol.

Ah I get it now!
Is 'screen on time' with Android how much you actually used your phone?
As for the battery-life I have more good news for you.
If you choose to install a custom-ROM later, you have the possibility of literally boosting your battery-life. MIUI+UC+UV=....well, my personal best was not charging the phone for three days and still have more than 60% on moderate usage.
And the second thing is the SAMOLED+ screen. While it has its downsides, the upsides make it clearly a winner when compared to a LCD. The contrast and brightness are high enough to make me use a low brightness-settings most of the time and still see everything, even if it's bright outside. This results in a better battery-life too.

Buy a 16gb micro sd or a 32gb sd remembering the phone has 16gb internal memory too (give or take customizations) and put all your films on your phone no need for anything else apart from a player app such as rockplayer or vital player to play back pretty much any format of video including xvid/divx and mkv with or without subtitles

I don't always have my usb cable for the phone but I generally carry a usb stick. Its plugged into the sgs2 adaptor so I always have that too. Good to "steal" stuff off of mates pc's without needing drivers to be installed...

Idle drain is very low as long as the phone manages to deep sleep, aka you dont have any rouge apps.

Hey,
I'm using my S2 with CM10.1, and sometimes I have redraws when sweeping through pages in Trebuchet, and when I play games like Zombie Highway I have FPS drops sometimes. I never have used my device with overclocking or undervolting. Just one time used Siyah kernel with higher GPU freqs. Is there a chance that my CPU is damaged or bad? Btw I'm experiencing huge battery drain, but I'm using extended Samsung's battery with 2000mAh. I have taken that battery back to shop, because thought it was wrong, they replaced it to brand new, and the problem is the same. I'm surfing in internet with my S2 switched to 2G network and after 10minutes of surfing I see 5% battery came down... Usualy I charge it two times per day, which is very annoying. My screen brightness is 40%. What's the problem? If this problem will be in future I will probably switch to iPhone.

Well here is a problem with my battery, the thing is that my battery charges slower world what I talk about that is loaded in 12 hours or more, but that if I can not play because you are lowering the percentages just see it, I did the battery calibration and wait to be charged at 100% and nothing happened after I see the same, I read that was to change both roms, must be that these last two months I've changed like 3 times rom (paranoid, softmax, and again by the holo paranoid) then let me know if software problem or I have to buy another battery?
Or cable? Did you do a search? There are loads of threads on this issue and they all pretty much contain the answers

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with a similar issue (wife's phone). I'm fairly certain it's not a cable issue; here's why:
I've tested with multiple cables and the issue persists. I decided to test her charger with my Galaxy Nexus and found charging was fine. I also loaded up Battery Monitor Widget on both phones and saw a huge difference. Her phone charges at 281 amps, mine charges at 685 amps. My phone runs CM 10.1, hers runs stock. FastCharge is NOT enabled on my G-Nex.
Her battery drains stupid fast. Faster than mine, and the G-Nex is not known for having a great battery, while I've generally read good things about the S3's battery.
So based on the 2 items above, I'm leaning towards an app or something that is draining battery (she installs all sorts of crap... she isn't tech savvy; but at least it's all from the Play Store). They're getting the same power from the same cable/charge (in theory), so I'm thinking an app is using the CPU preventing a faster charge. I can't seem to locate the app that's doing it. I also notice she's using a ton of data; with the Up/Down arrows flashing constantly, so I'm thinking maybe something is constantly accessing the network, but again I can't find it.
Reading battery stats doesn't seem to help since they all show the screen is the source of the battery drain. If the screen is off for the majority of the time, it wouldn't be caused by the screen, right?
So does anyone have any idea what could cause this or how I could find what app is killing network or cpu?
My phone is too hot and took three hours to charge ;( please help

Nobody can help you unless you include details....
Are you rooted?
Are you running a custom ROM? If so, which one?
Are you running a custom kernel?
Are you using the stock charger that came with your device?
Does you screen stay on when charging?
Are you charging your phone from your computer or from the wall?
How hot is "too hot"? What is the exact temperature of your battery and core?

If its still stock and taking 3 hours to charge you might think about taking it back. If its within the first 3 days and is defective they will swap it out right there. If after 3 days your gonna have to get a refurb in the mail. Mind you I have not worked there for 6 months but that was our policy when I was there. The phone does get somewhat hot when charging but 3 hours seems extremely long. Maybe be a bad battery or something like that. But the sooner you get back to the store the better.

Since it's right out of the box, my only guess is a stretch, but it maybe change the wall outlet? My house the old, and on certain wall outlets around the house are really buggy and give an inconsistent power supple and usually lead to blown fuses. Your problem obviously isn't as severe, but just for sh*ts and giggles, try it?
I've had 3 S4's and they all charged about 5-7% every 5 minutes. It's normal for it to get warm while charging especially if you're using it while charging. When I use my S4 during charging the battery temps can get up to 41c.

You have 14 days to return the phone to the store to get your money back or swap it for a different S4. If you have a problem after the 14 days you have to call the 1800 Verizon number and they will send you a new phone. I know because I just went through this. I Made sure they didn't send me a refurbished phone. I got a brand new one and its working great.

I'm stock and unrooted. No custom kernel. The phone is brand new out of the box. Stock charger in use. The SCreen doesn't stay on when charging. I charge it from the wall outlet. I would say its not too hot but it is noticeable. I'll look at the temperature when I charge it again.

On Stock i only would get 1.5-2 hours max of screen time on a single charge, and it would take forever to charge my phone. Most nights i would have it charging from 5% and i would wake up to an increase of only like 60% charge. Switching to acustom ROM fixed everything for me. Now i get 5+hrs of screen time on a single charge, and i can charge from 0-100% within 2 hours.
My battery life is much better, charges faster, runs much cooler and the phones SMOOOOTH!

6-7 seems pretty steep. Is that with powersaving on? Because my 2 hours was without powersaving. Now i get 5+ hours with wifi or lte on all day, medium brightness, no powersaving, and overclocked to 2GHz. I havent tested what times i can get now with powersaving, but i refuse to use it because what i get now is already getting me good enough battery life so no need to waste performance to make it last longer.

Usually I'm on wifi most of the day. Brightness about 60%. No power saving however I always have force gpu rendering on which has made a huge improvement on my battery.

I've been downloading apps and stuff all day and I'll still end up getting 6 hours on screen time. My battery drops at most 15% every hour with screen on.

Oh thats pretty close to what i get now. Idk my phone has its own personality. It has a history of hating stock, hating AOKP, and AOSP when it comes to battery life. Performs fine, but heats up like crazy and i think its the heat that causes the drain. I don't understand why the Custom TW ROMS treat the temps so much better, but thats just how it goes with my phone. However just finally updated my favourite AOKP ROM and it seems to have fixed my temp problems, so hopefully when i run my phone the next couple of days the battery life sticks to how its been going!.
Also ordered a pair of 3500mAh batteries, so looking forward to seeing if i can get close to 10 hours of screen time with those!
Automatic brightness will help tremendously. not only that but having wifi on will definitely drain your battery a lot faster.

So when plugged in wall charger it uses 650 mah or do i need to use the app on the video to increase the voltage?
Sorry....but I can't believe you posted this..... 3 hours IS pretty damn fast.....my old galaxy W used to take 5 to 6 hours.
A lot of things in this world may well be instant.........phone charging ain't EVER gonna be one of them.........
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM

Use s4 charger. It has 1amp output current. .
But not recommended though.

Yes, the charging speed Form S2 is very poor. I don't understand this cause other manufactorers do it better without battery issues...

Then buy an ICrap or old BlackBerry and get a swirl... live free with equally fast discharge...
Fast charge is disabled by default (on obvious reasons, google it), but hey... anyone is free to make it work if he can find a proper solution.
Said that, 3 hrs should be more like 2 hours or 2 hours and a a half... but seen OP never stated specs, it's all right.

Oh, you're very polite :/
In fact, the most other phones charge with ~1A+ and they don't have any big draing issues in common. It doesn't matter which OS they run.

ill never buy an iphone,s2 does charge really slowly and s3 too,but s4 no,so its a matter of samsungs technology which is slow, plus i agree that battery is good for 1650,i guess ill have to get used to it.Im going to send it to samsung to see if they can change something, like the usb port to handle more voltage,do u guys think its possible?

Yes I am , thank you, cause the slow charge issue was elaborated and mentioned so many time around XDA but seems no one cares to search and read.
This phone with and with original charger, and AFTER teh update from Gingerbread to ICS/JB is charging as per specs. On Gingerbread there was a flaw that permitted to charge it upto 900-1000 mA but the phone was rather hot, I recall charging mine in an hour and a half or 15-20 minutes more, from 2-3% to 100% back when phone had GingerBread.

Nope, they won't do anything, but you can try all along if it's free service.

You can use 2.1A output chargers too, it is simply not going to draw all that but you might get the better on the go recharging while you're using the phone with heavy apps. Just think of the dual car chargers - they have both 1A (phone) and 2.1A (tablet) output. SatNav on 1A is zeroing or still draining your phone battery, while 2A can slowly charge it on the go.
You just give it a needed juice and if the discharge is so greater then recharge, there's not much you can do about it.
Call it a flaw, but Samsung did it cause of longevity of their batteries and li-ion technology.
That is why I indicated iCrap and BB - their fast charge is provoking rather fast discharge too cause the battery will not hold it. I have colleagues with BB who're charging in an hour but get their phones depleted in 3 hours of usage... I wouldn't want that from my S2 for sure. :good:

It doesn't matter what the output current of the charger is... the phone will only draw 650mA.
The charger I got with my S2 delivers 1A but my phone only draws 650mA. Actually the hardware doesn't support it.
IMO, 3hrs is pretty fast for a full charge.
Edit: Just noticed that Fevves already mentioned all that...
adressing sfafrorn
Some kernels have the Option to change the charge rate but even at 650mA the phone will get very hot if you are doing something on it while charging
Sandm4n is right :good:
