I think VLC player plays almost everything. Then just copy the orig's to the sd card.
Have you considered DLing smaller movie files?
Google "300MB movies".

There are players on the market that can play them back natively if you have enough space, this overrides the needs of converting them.
Players to look at Dice Player, MX, etc, some are free and have trials.

I'm using VLC for android. It is still alpha and crashes few times while watching movie, but it might be because of watching it from network share.

thanks guys

Just purchase the app in the market and put the movies on your SD card. You can drag and drop. It is just as simple as using iTunes, if not more simple because iTunes is prohibitive and not very user friendly.
If you're watching movies at home you can use VLC Stream and Convert. It encodes movies on your computer and transfers them. Until the X10 has native DNLA support this is the next best option. Perhaps it may be even better because anything you can decode on the computer is virtually what you can watch on the X10, other than Real Media encoded files in my experience. Haven't contacted the developer (TravelDevel - very awesome developer), so it could just be the codecs on my computer. Not too sure.. (video works, sound doesn't)
Sorted. Thanks to all for your help
I use SuperC to convert anything I'm putting on, that way you know it will play and can resize to fit the screen perfectly.
http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Handbrake is pretty sweet for ripping dvds, too
It produces mp4 files which can then be watched with the shipped player

You're welcome! Nice to hear you have sorted it out...
I use xilisoft video convertor to convert my movies from my K750i - W800i - PSP - W960i - X10i days.
Still like using it.
I think whichever softwares you use, as long as you get the configurations right and save to mp4, it should be all right~
I've downloaded the handbrake as recomended but I'm unable to get it to rip any DVDs. All I'm getting after scanning is a black blank box and nothing else. Can anybody help or recomend any other free software I can use. I have got aura dvd ripper pro which I downloaded to use for my kids arcos 405 but the audio track is always around 5 seconds behind the picture.
Where am I going wrong? You guy's all seem to have it sorted. I spend a lot of time in hospital and would so like to rip my films and put them on my X10 so I can watch them when I'm away.
Has any of you cleaver lot got any goo ideas onhow I should proceed??
Sorry for hijacking, which format is best suited for X10 when I convert with handbrake ?
Picture size, file format.. ?

[Q] Will the SGS II play MKV, h.264 with subtitles without conversion?

I've been using an iPhone for god knows how long just becuase of Air Video - there are no alternatives for Android. The Galaxy S II is looking absolutely perfect, but there's just one more thing I absolutely must confirm before I make the purchase.
I'm a huge anime watcher. I watch anime on the go all the time. The iPhone 4 uses Air Video and does that perfectly. Since there's no alternative for Android the Galaxy S II must be able to watch it without conversion for me to replace my iPhone with it.
My anime are almost always 720p, MKV encoded with h.264, softsubs. That's generally the industry standard for anime distribution. Will the Galaxy S II play these files without conversion. If it's a yes, then I'm ordering right now.
If someone here actually has one and watches anime, it would be much appreciated if you can download an episode and try it out on your device. Telling me your results would be much appreciated!
The most important thing is framerate, audio and subtitle rendering.
Havent watched anime specifically but tested a x264 encoded blu ray 1080p and that worked fine.
Edit: Have u got a sample that i/we could test?

I can confirm 720p (and 1080p as well most likely) MKV files (yes, anime. Tried it with released from gg, commie, UTW) with .ass/.srt softsubs play perfectly. The more advanced aspects of .ass subs don't work but it's no big deal - Styling, transition effects, etc.
I'm using mVideoPlayer instead of the stock one as the stock can't read .ass softsubs.
If I had this two years ago when i used to go on anime binges it would've been perfect. Didn't like waiting 30 mins for each ep to convert to 480x272 mp4s.
Should play them, make sure the subs file name is the same as the video (up to the file extension obviously). If the subs don't play try converting them to .srt subs and try again!
1920x1080 mkv's play fine, full speed. This is the only phone that's been able to play my 'Bad Apple PV' test mkv at full speed without the video/sound getting out of sync after 20 seconds.
However subtitles did not work in any of the players I tried (default, mobo & rock). Will look for another player later.

These MKV's don't have a separate subs file. They're built into the mkv as a separate data stream.
For those looking for an alternative to Air Video, I've been using Plex. It has a companion program that runs on your comp (just like air video) that converts pretty much any video format to stream to your android device. Only problem is that it's not quite as easy to set up to stream over 3g/4g as air video is. But if you know how to port-forward your router, it's pretty easy from there. Hope this helps some ppl!

Why are you not watching anime anymore? There are so many good things this season.
The S2 can play HD content no problem, it's the media player you should be looking at. If one doesn't read subs in MKV containers then just move on to the next media player and check. Yeah anyway, no problems.
As for why i'm not watching any, i'm too busy. I work/study 50+ hours a week now, I try to squeeze something in during the commutes though.
Enjoy your new beast phone.

It doesn't support subtitles, so it's of no use for people who watch anime. xD

Yeah, not sure why I was thinking of external subs. I have some 720p MKVs and their subs, of the kind you mention, do play in the default player for me...
...and to answer a question above: Yes! Seeking within 1080p content works just fine.

Thank you so much. Buying now from handtec.
I have the default player, moboplayer, mvideoplayer, and Rockplayer installed, each will do a little something the others won't. Interesting there is now enough CPU and RAM grunt for software decoding to manage things that were like slideshows on other phones.
whats the largest size file you can put onto the gs2?
tried to copy a 4.4 gb mkv to the phone and says its to large of a file,
do i have to create a partition in a different format?
if so whats the best method?
any help much appreciated.
On the subject of video, has anyone use DLNA to connect to a Twonky server? My G2X would connect but not play video. I'm hoping it's because the G2X couldn't support MKV which is what all me stuff's encoded in. Thx.
I have a 3gb 1080p anime movie I use for testing. Lots of things happening on screen. I dont watch anime at all, but subtitles was included in the movie and displayed fine.
1 was a subtitled Dragon ball z/gt(dont know really) but played fine with subtitles. the other was a soul blade(i think) that played smoothly also.

[Q] What's the best way to convert DVD video?

What is the best way to convert a DVD, and copy the resulting file(s) over to the TAB ?
TIA
Felt I should help since you're a fan of Liverpool as well.

i once read an article about this, it supply all information we need to copy DVDs to tab, below is the link, you may have a look:
DVD movies for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 full-screen playback
ok, handbreak maybe good
i also try the brorsoft converter, the free trial version
both of them you can have a try
I know this is an old thread, but I have been using Freemake to rip DVD to any format you want. I was searching trying to figure out best format and found this thread. I did several movies with the "android" preset in Freemake, and they turned out very well. I am currently trying the MP4 preset. It takes a while to convert on my computer (like 4 to 5 hours) but the quality is good for both video and audio. The file sizes for a 3 hour DVD are around 2 to 3 GB.
I use MX Video Player to play the files on the tab. There are lots of options out there, and everyone has their opinions, but it works for me.
SUPER video converter: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
This is decent stuff, not copied software with overnight packed malware. I use this converter since ages and it's probably as old as virtual dub.
Open source (I think) and free!

[Q] Can you please show me how to play movies on GTab?

Okay guys, lets say I want to store my movies on a 32gb USB flash drive, I have the USB attachment for the tab.
Now, exactly how do I convert wmv movies (in the 2.5 GB range, downloaded from Amazon videos) to mp4 or a file that will actually play on the tab?
As in what settings should I use, I have BS Player and Dice Player installed.
Thanks.
You can just try them with bsplayer or dice player, most of them work fine (if they're 720p or lower).
For converting, have a look at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20736368&postcount=18
Are those amazon videos DRM free so that they can actually be converted?
Okay I'll give it a try.
Yes they are DRM, as far as I'm aware. Reading how to get rid of that now.
ETA: Okay I bought downloaded Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate, which pretty much does it all and will remove the DRM.

well i would suggest the video/movie player called mx video player, it will ask to download a armv6 update for the galaxy tab...which u need to do, then it supports tegra 2 hardware accelerated decoding...its great, as for decoding, i use the program any video convertor, in windows
Get moboplayer; it is free and has played every movie I have copied to my tab. It will play mp4, avi, and everything else.
Hey all,
Used Aimersoft and used the pre setting for Ipad 2 to convert. Took about 2 hours for each movie (Fast Five, Thor, Conan) and also removed the DRM. Went from 2.5GB each to about 300-450 MB each. Just copied the mp4 files straight to my movies folder. BSPlayer plays them perfectly in fullscreen mode with no lag or audio sync issues.
Thanks for the help.

I've installed mobo player.
i've just put on avatar, transformers 3 and warrior. as i dragged them across the pc started converting them. each of them looked ok in the folder. when i unplugged the phone and tried playing them they were just about 5 minutes long with just a bit of music.
i'm completely stuck and baffled...
just tried again, and again, only 4 minutes 51 secs of video played. i don't understand why. is it because i'm uploading using my pc?
why is the pc trying to convert my file format as i'm trying to transfer it? confused!!!
I play 720p mp4 flawlessly with Mvideoplayer. I wasn't promted to convert my MP4 files when I copied them from my PC to my phone, but it did come up when I did it with some AVI files. I clicked no to conversion and they play fine on my phone.
OK, so i've now tried loading another type of file, avi, to the phone. it was a 6.2GB movie. It didn't load, said it was too big!!! WTF!
this is some FAT32 issue right?
But this still doesn't solve my original problem.
I've loaded many different files, many types, different sizes.... But it seems like all the stock video player (and now MOBO Player) wants to do is play only 4 minutes 51 seconds........
but when you look at the file through astro or the pc, it shows the true length of the file.... thnk i'm missing something here, it may be basic, but please help someone. been at this all day with no luck!!
wmv
anybody knows about a player for wmv files? I tried using the Mx Video Player but it says it doesn't support it.
I don't whether you guys looking for the free or paid apps
but
I personally using rockplayer lite and it does work with almost every thing especially if you use "play with hardware acceleration" then every thinh up to 3.5 gb film is work pefectly
I got also a PowerDVD mobile (violation of the xda ...) hacked one so it work well.
so i cannnot post a apk.
Try diceplayer
Sent from my XPS using xda premium
I transferred movies onto mine, six files ranging from about 700mb to 1.6gb in avi format and they play without any problems on mobo player,I also have power dvd mobile legit version and that plays them as well, the only thing I find with power dvd is it stops playing now and again and I have to press play for it to continue.
I'm on windows 7 and that asks me do I want to convert it,I don't generally but with the planet of the apes I did but it played ok just a smaller file size.
The only thing I can suggest if you haven't already done so is instead of drag and drop, try right clicking on the file and copy/paste and see if that makes a difference??
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
i tried like mx video player. mobo player etc almost anything with neon codec support. it can barely play a 720p wmv properly, audio just out of sync and video is laggy. something is not right here. however i try some other resolution like 480p and it works fine.
my ex optimus 3d can even play almost all video format with hardware acceleration support.
some media players does not use hardware acceleration!! thats is way is not work fluently

This was the kind of answer I was looking for.
I've spent al most 2 days trying to figure it out.

I will try avi files, and no to convert.
hoping this works. stay tuned...
what kind of video can the galley-app play?
I would much like to stream to my Sony TV without HDMI-cabel, same way it works with pictures
Hi,
What is the best program to play movies and subtitles for XPS?
If you try to copy videos or audio it will sometimes ask you to format the file, simply don't allow this when the window pops up.
This will be different for every computer depending on what codecs you have installed.
Also sounds like your possibly not waiting long enough for the files to copy over? Might not be showing the progress bar for what ever reason, slow pc?
Replace the miniUSB cable perhaps with another.
Try a different computer to drag and drop the files across.
There's a 2gb file size limit with the fat file system, a 720p or lower avi movie that's about 700mb is plenty quality for a screen this small, you don't need large blueray 1080p clips taking up memory for a very minor difference in quality.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
Also you can put files anywhere on the memory, player will pick up the files automatically.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
If you use a combination of bubbleupnp and dice player you can play almost all movie formats just fine. It is perfectly possible to play videos from other dlna servers as well as play videos from the phone on other dlna renderers.
