Thought I would post this here for those not knowing this in posted here at XDA
New HTC EVO rooting method now available: HTC Supertool
No matter which HTC EVO device you own, and no matter how many OTA updates you have taken, there is now officially nothing stopping you from rooting your phone. This is all thanks to HTC Supertool, a new method of rooting almost all HTC Android devices, and it's been confirmed to work on the HTC EVO 4G, the EVO 3D, the EVO Design 4G, the EVO View 4G, and even the red-headed stepchild better known as the EVO Shift 4G.
In addition to unlocking the bootloader and rooting your phone, this tool offers additional options to "De-Sense" your phone, re-enable Sense, unroot your phone, relock the bootloader, enable wireless tethering, and flash a new(er) version of the Android Market.
I can't personally test this on my EVO View tablet, as it's currently out for repairs. And my EVO 3D is already rooted and running Fresh 4.1.0 (a great ROM, by the way!). But if you have held off on rooting until an easier method were to come along, this might be just what you're looking for.
Download links and full instructions are at the link below. And if you end up giving this a shot, be sure to let us know how you like it!

AWW MAN THANKS SO MUCH, I'm going to try this now!
Wow. This looks great! Got a buddy that wants his shift rooted. This might be the ticket.

I read a lot of comments and seen a lot of people say that it does not work for 1.5.

I read this below, that you still have to unlock the HTC way and then use the Bat file, I posted it so others could try and report back, worth a shot.
You must unlock bootloader. google "htc dev unlock bootloader" go to the htc dev site and follow directions to unlock the bootloader. then run the bat file. now you have perm root. click thanks if I helped

Ever thus to deadbeats.
Someone should report if S-OFF is obtained with this. Currently system file rooting is done easily through superuser. I am on hboot 1.5 and cannot flash custom kernels or splash screens so if this changes that I'll report back.
EDIT : I don't wanna risk a brick by tampering with pc commands geared toward forcing an unlock of the NAND but hopefully some devs can take a look at the bat and tinker with it.

That method doesn't work 100% of the time or for all roms. I have borked my phone a number of times and had to get my pc to boot/flash anyways.

This will not get you s-off for hboot1.5. I ran it it tries to cycle your emmc which does not work, then it spits you to the htc dev site to get the unlock token you put it in from fastboot usb it runs everything like you were going to unlock bootloader shows you are unlocked but no s-off so I would say that this is just an automatic script for what we allready have but nothing else. If anyone else tries and gets it working for hboot1.5 and gets s-off please report with steps.

you can flash kernels and splash screens on 1.5. I have done it a couple of times this week already. flashgui doesn't always work for me, the flashing method inside of the infected rom thread ALWAYS works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277431
All i have to do to flash kernels on hboot 1.5 is to boot recovery through command prompt on my computer(fastboot boot "recovery".img). I'm still using cwm 4.0.1.4. Its an extra step I guess but its REALLY easy and works every time.

Ok so I have 1.5 and love using gui. It works for me every time. I can flash kernels or if u flash a recovery with it, u can reboot into recovery without using the comp. I just haven't been able to flash a splash screen.
it works
this tool worked perfectly got bootloader unlocked and have root access under 10 minutes.
I have evo 3d w/ hboot 1.5
bootloader unlocked w/ personal htcdev key
meaning it still has S-ON
the only things on this tool that didn't work were the options 3,6,7, and 9.
3 - attempt to s-off doesn't work obviously
6 - to de-sense doesn't work
7 - and obviously if that doesn't work the re-sense doesn't work.
9 - update market gave me some sort of error (but i updated to 3.4.4 after finding a link to the apk on google)

It always worked fine for me........just take care of which kernel you are flashing.
DO NOT flash 2.3.3 kernels (like silverneedle 1.0) on 2.3.4 ROMS..

Not sure if anyone posted this but the HTC Unlocking procedure works after the OTA update. I unlocked my friend's bootloader using the directions on the htcdev site (even though it says unlocking is only available for the sensation currently)

Why? HTC makes the phone and software for it. Their methods are better than finding hacks and holes in the software to push the things needed for s-off, etc.

I don't see why people are so scared to use the method. Yes you loose your warranty, but honestly how many people have used warranty to fix a phone? I personally have NEVER, but have used insurance 3 times over the last 10 years.

^ Thats why i don't use the HTC Unlock.
S-ON will always be on using HTC's method. I believe it's to keep you from flashing the radio. If I'm correct the only extra thing you can actually flash with htc's unlocker is the system, data and boot partition. Or certain recovery's authorized by HTC can be flashed.

Hmm ill try when I get home. It's not my phone. It's my friends. Hehe mine has been s-off since the day it was released.
Ok so can't flash splash screens. I tried flashing it via fastboot and the zip. When i try in fastboot I get a bootloader signiture error. When i try the zip it starts to parse it but then boots me out. Engine hboot zip did the same thing. While its partially unlocked I think they still locked down some things. Fastboot erase recovery errors out saying not allowed.

Really? 10 times in 3 years. This is why HTC is reserving the right to void your warranty. Phones will be offered as is before long if others are destroying them as fast as you.

Can someone show me the quoted text from HTC's site that says if you unlock using their method that your warranty is void. Or is everyone just assuming this because they want your serial number to unlock.
LMAO
Your warranties are now invalid
Should have used revolution, and keep your warranties intact.
Be warned, if you unlock with HTC's method and you don't have s-off already, you will be able to load roms but NOT KERNELS at all.

I tried freeza's kernel on a phone that was unlocked via HTC unlock. Doesnt take.. And you know how when you flash kernels it usually takes like 10 seconds to flash? It takes a couple of minutes to flash. Even if you install a rom when it gets to install the boot.img it hangs longer than it takes to install /system
Same thing that is happening with the recoveries(except that one older version on cwm) they appear to flash fine but the changes do not really take

Who in their right mind would choose HTC's unlock method, over Revolutionary? If they did choose HTC's unlocking method, then their pretty stupid and they shouldn't be flashing roms in the first place.
I mean, come-on. Revolutionary gave us an exploit to get s-off and root with the users in mind. HTC gave us the unlocking method with HTC in mind. So if you chose HTC, when we have Revolutionary, you deserve whatever you get. IMHO

Class A **** response there.
There many reasons to go through it. One being if you didn't have the choice and ur phone had the OTA already applied. The other being for dev purposes and to see what all it actually does so we can get a idea about it.

Someone please delete this thread as what is stated in the original post is totally false. The stock kernal with CIQ removed does indeed work, no other custom 2.3.3 Kernals will work with 2.3.4 because the framework is different.
Edit: Not to mention once an unofficial exploit is available, I am positive it can be ran on top of the HTC Unlock to give you S-OFF.

Correcto mundo on the **** answer.
And yes, I'm new here, but it doesn't mean I did my search. Read many guides how to use HTC unlock here, and all of there where "so revolutionary isn't needed anymore" "you can install roms with htc method" bla bla bla, but none of them say you can't install kernels. So I just posted this as a warning for other newbies.
And yes, as the other guy, I did try the stock modified new kernel, and nope, doesn't take it. Appears HTC has put some kind of lock to the kernel.
Yup... I can confirm this too. I updated my phone via ota, then proceeded to the htc unlock page. (should have read xda first) Bootloader unlock was very easy, and cwm installed fine. after cwm installed I noticed wifi reads error after you try to turn on. Nothing besides the initial cwm flashed via bootloader, and kernels do not flash in cwm. Now im pissed, n feel like a dumbass. Thanks HTC. Well... Im gonna try to get the phone covered under an insurance claim. With a new phone, I cant say I will make the same mistake twice...
Cant you just relock the phone via the HTC method and use a revolutionary method once its relocked?

Can you post screen shots of you settings kernel version before and after you flashed the kernel? Or are you just saying it worked because you flashed it and nothing broke? I flashed freeza's kernel and my kernel version didn't change at all. Not even the date SMP PREEMPT Fri Aug 5
Plus some of the things it claimed to do at boot didn't happen
I still had data in these after I flashed and booted:
Removes files from /data/system/dropbox ()
-Removes files from /data/system/appusagestats
-Removes files from /data/system/usagestats
These were still all read write:
-Modifies permissions on /data/system/dropbox to read-only
-Modifies permissions on /data/system/appusagestats to read-only
-Modifies permissions on /data/system/usagestats to read-only
All Still had full permissions:
-Removes permissions on /data/system/userbehavior.db
-Removes permissions on /data/system/userbehavior.db
-Removes permissions on /data/system/userbehavior.db-shm
-Removes permissions on /data/system/userbehavior.db-wal
-Removes permissions on /data/system/userbehavior.xml
Plus the fact the kernel takes a few minutes to flash when it should only take the most a few seconds tells you something isnt right. Have you guys tried flashing a kernel by it self? Do you notice it takes a long time to flash? Or when you're flashing a rom watch the progress. Does it hang and take longer to flash the boot image than the system image? that shouldnt be. Something is for sure not taking. I flashed his kernel and nothing broke, but none of his changes he made to it stuck

No, you cannot. Revolutionary doesnt support the 1.50 bootloader. In the past we could solve this by downgrading the bootloader. But now HTC built in a bootloader version check. It wont allow you to flash a bootloader with an older version of the current bootloader. We tried changing the mainver in the misc partition and that's how we found that out. Then we tried to flash the RUU with the older 1.40 bootloader we got a "bootloader is older version" IEF from alpharev/revolutionary said "That's a new one" Him and I were on irc the other night trying to figure it out. At first we couldnt even get a RUU to run. That's when I discovered to get a RUU to run you first have to relock the phone(which you could unlock again after)

you dont have to relock. Just the best bet is to hold off until revolutionary get's it working with the hboot 1.50. Hopefully soon they will figure it out. Or HTC gives us another update that fully unlocks us. I called HTC and started a case about this not fully unlocked nonsense. I told them if I void my warranty I should be able to flash whatever I want on my phone. the rep even did say "well even if you dont, it's your phone you should be able to do what you want with it" He logged my complaint and said they are actually looking for feedback on the bootloader unlock and said he will log the call and escalate it to them. I did ask if this was just a first step and if there would be a further update later and he said it was possible. Since this is the first time they are doing this they will most likely gather the feedback from the users and make the process better. How good my call did? probably not good at all. But I just kept telling the guy.. If I void my warranty I should be able to try to flash whatever I want to my phone, even if melted it and blew it into pieces. The rep for sure agreed with me.

Ok thanks!! I helped my cousin unlock his phone via the HTC method because he didnt feel comfortable doing it alone. We were both surprised to learn that after unlocking the bootloader the phone still had S-On! Now can he still flash a custom rom and become rooted with S-On? Everytime we go into the bootloader and try to go into recovery we get a red triangle with a exclamation point in the middle. Im not sure if something went wrong in the unlocking process but now he just has a unlocked phone thats still not rooted.

I'm not sure what the OP was referring to since the bootloader unlocker was open a few days ago. I unlocked my bootloader then and when I followed the link today it sent me to the exact same page.
Like I said, there is no mention of S-ON or S-OFF anywhere. Perhaps the OP can clarify or correct.
Also, I went ahead and went through the process again and it was identical with no S-OFF.
That is Lame, HTC knew exactly what we were talking about back when this all started. To "unlock" the bootloader and keep boot.img locked and S on is a major Fail on HTC!
Unless they come through with part 2...

I believe part one was the software update that allowed the unlock to be done, part two would be the unlock process they currently do on their website.

Like I said, there is no mention of S-ON or S-OFF anywhere. Perhaps the OP can clarify or correct.
Also, I went ahead and went through the process again and it was identical with no S-OFF.

I thought S-OFF/S-ON didn't matter with an "unlocked" bootloader. Doesn't unlocking the bootloader essentially remove the signature check, which without a signature check in place it doesnt matter if S is ON of OFF.
I can flash ROMs fine but I thought I couldn't flash a new radio because all of the tutorials state that I need S-OFF to flash radios. No?
No S off no Kernels

They unlocked the Sytem and Data partition only with there unlock method. There unlock method does not in any way touch the S-Flag... So if you have s-off you will keep it, if you have s-on you are screwed and will NEVER get s-off unless revolutionary (or the like) do this for us again. I do understand that they may be looking at reverting the 1.5hboo to 1.4 then in turn allow you to use the there tool to obtain S-OFF.
If they would just unlock the boot partition all would be well regardless of S-Flag. Those bastards. So in essence you can flash a custom ROM or even install SU (whatever mods you want) but you wont be flashing a new kernel.
Luckily I had S-OFF and decided to experiment with this and my S-OFF remained and I can flash as I choose.

I wanna add that kernels CAN be flashed with this HTC method. They MUST be flashed with Fastboot though.
So by unlocking the bootloader can you us one of this phones with any service provider? For example I want the EVO 3D but I have Verizon

People have been flashing 2.3.4 kernels with a modified ramdisk using fastboot (not recovery) from what I've read. I think people are too quick to judge HTC. They did what they said they would do. I don't think half of the people here even really know the intricacies of unlocked bootloaders and s-off (I certainly don't ). Does s-off even mean anything on non-HTC phones?
I remember people saying how easy it would be to get 'root' since we had an ENG bootloader. They acted like it was a done deal. It certainly took longer than they made it sound like it would and I don't know if alpharev even used the ENG bootloader to get s-off.

Are you sure they are not S-OFF?
Can you please provide the fastboot command to do this? As well, The people that are flashing the modified kernels like on my ROM using freeza kernel are currently S-OFF if you are S-OFF you can flash modded kernel with hboot 1.5. If you are S-On you cannot. But since you two both say its possible can you please provide a citation or some other sort of proof. I would love to investigate this further! This means a whole new ball game.
EDIT: And yes, I do understand the intricacies of kernels, ROMS, eMMC partitions, etc. I am no expert like the guys at revolutionary or anything even close but I do understand.
And to answer your question about S-OFF on other devices. No such thing. I believe this is just an HTC thing. Im sure other manufactures have there own version of this but I only play with HTC.
I did do some ROM and kernel work on some LG stuff and they did not have any real protection at all. Apply ROOT and flash recovery, that was it. So simple, so easy.

I think it's fastboot as in using the pg86img.zip. I've just read about it in the general forum and can't test anything since I am s-off.

I am currently s-on htc unlock method. I have been pulling the boot.img out of the room zip then booting phone into fastboot. With boot.img in same dir as fastboot I use the command fastboot flash boot boot.img. After successful I use the volume buttons to get into recovery and flash the rom. Using md5sum I have tested the kernel partition is changed.

Try this then.... FLash a ROM based on 2.3.3 then flash silverneedle 1.0, overclock and tell me if that works? If you can... If not its cool.

Install this:
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Worked for me as far as I can tell. My device says S-ON but above that says 'UNLOCKED' and I was able to flash the CWR 5 recovery image and use that as posted earlier in this thread.
The worst nightmare was getting my computer to recognize the phone. I had recently put a new hard drive in my computer, and HTC Sync etc would NOT work. I tried TWO other computers and still would not work. Finally had to dig up the old hard drive, put it back in my first computer (since I had used that successfully to update my Slide in the first place to Froyo 2.2) and do all the steps.
Still can't explain what the problem was, since the new hard drive is the same base OS (Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit) but at least it worked. And now this phone has some life again (despite a failure to replace a cracked digitizer)
Recovery problem
i installed clockwork recovery image thought it was work when i tried to install superuser i noticed clockwork recovery was not working when i pick any thing from the menu like install for sd it doesn't do anything. please help.

You can't S-OFF with the new bootloaders. But at least with your bootloader unlocked, you can do some of the things an S-OFF'd phone can (like flashing CWM Recovery and r/w in /system/), so it's still fairly useful.
I picked up a bolt from a friend and it is apparently still on 1.12.605.9 firmware, never been rooted and still has s-on. How do I root this damn thing because I have tried every site, forum, and I cannot find a download link that works to do the old root method. I rooted my personal bolt and s-off with no problem. But this one is not connected at the moment either so I can't get it to do any ota's to get it up to date. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Root Old Software for HTC Thunderbolt
I had the instructions up before I realized the software version being 1.12.605.9.
I'm slow sometimes. =l
I tried doing a search for you, but I really couldn't find anything either.
Hopefully it will push an OTA here shortly and upgrade to 2.11.605.9 or 2.11.605.19 so you can use the revolutionary method.
are you sure the phone is not rooted and running a custom rom based on 1.12.605.9? unless its been turned off and sitting ona shelf it should have OTAed several times from that,as 1.12.605.9 was the first minor update the TB got, from its shipping firmware of 1.12.605.6.
-check your app drawer for the superuser icon
-check hboot for 1.04.2000 eng s-off hboot
if you truly are not allready rooted,im not sure what to think- theres no way a stock phone would have survived that long with no updates. nonetheless, all you need to do is run an RUU for a newer build number. literally anything between what you nave and 2.11.605.5 should get you 1.04 or 1.05 hboot. you dont wantto go newer,as youll then have to downgrade back to 605.5,or youll have to run fre3vo first to temp root.,then run revolutionary.

edit:
if you want to do the old school root, theres a link to the old root method post here:
http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html
it should contain a link to jcases original instructions, and i could upload the exploits file is the links are broken.
but,it would prolly be alot easier to just run a newer RUU and then run revolutionary

I took a picture of the hboot screen, maybe this explain a little more. The phone has a cracked screen so it wasnt used since they first got it not long after release, I guess. I double checked and it is not rooted. I am downloading the 605.5 RUU now and will try that and see what happens. I will report back with results. Thank you for you response.

did you forget to enable usb debugging? do you still have the sdk instaLLEd? if so open a cmd window,cd to your adb directory, and then enter "adb devices" if your drivers are working and the phone is in charge only mode, usb debugging on,youll get your serial number back.
you may need to find the device in device manager, and manually update drivers. you can also try rebooting the pc,and different usb cables and ports. uninstall htc sync, pda net,or anything else that can communicate with your phone.
if you need to reinstall them: revoutionary hboot drivers
as the guys said, you dont need to run the RUU. revolutionary will work fine on what you have,i was under the impression your firmware was hboot 1.03
I got it all worked out. Reinstalled the drivers, phone connected and have revolutionary s-off, root and latest firmware. I appreciate everyone's help, we have some awesome ppl in the thunderbolt community. I am definitely learning a lot lately. Thank you again.
