If I go through the HTC Bootloader unlock, will that allow me to gain root so I can use a Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspot app like Barnacle? It needs root access.

That's the first step. You'll then need to root your phone after it's unlocked. There's plenty of posts in the Dev section of this forum to help you with that.

Do any of these actually work in infrastructure mode? or is it all ad-hoc still?

Alright, Currently I have the 2.3.4 gingerbread version of the Atrix rooted. For some reason I can not get any of the wireless tethering root apps to work. This includes Wireless tether for root users, wifi tether and barnacle. None of these would work on my previous 2.2.2 root either. Any help? the logs say the programs are running fine but none of my devices can pick up the phone. This includes laptops and me Eee Pad. I have changed the SSID, added and removed wep. I do not know what I am doing wrong....
I know this probably won't help much but the same thing was happening to me when I first rooted my Atrix and the Wireless Tether app. I turned off the password and everything worked fine after that. I can always see who is trying to connect to my network anyway so I know if anybody is trying to steal my network.

I did try that and still nothing... very frustrating really. Mind taking me through your settings and which version (maybe a link to where you got it). It is possible I am missing something very simple and just do not know it....
Why not root and change the entitlement check then use the built in mobile hotspot app.
I've been using it with no problem and used the custom apn method before GB

You need to be rooted first.

They can tell much easier that you are tethering without a plan if you are using custom APN's.
The custom apn will not work on gingerbread. The ota will not allow changes like froyo did.

Yea.... I am trying to not get caught. I mostly want this feature for my Eee Pad when I am out and about.... Anyone else having luck with root tether apps for their Atrix? If so did you have to do anything specific?

Been a year and they still haven't said anything. And with the entitlement check disabled I'm not using a custom apn.

Try "pdanet" by using google. Not root or apn changing required.

PDAnet only supports USB tethering. Bluetooth DUN is available but not supported by ipad.

I got slightly different issue, wireless tether for root - clients can see the AP and connect at layer 2, but refuse to take a DHCP address and never actually get an IP address. This happens both with and without encryption.
Too cheap to buy sqlite editor to do the mod
so what's the easiest solution to get tethering to work for someone who updated firmware of the phone to latest version to get rid of random reboots?
how would one get tethering to work? do i have to root it? can i do it somehow without rooting it? like there was a hack for droidx or something similar?
and if root the only one choice which is best tested app to use for that?

Come to Synergy and use the hacked WiFi Hotspot for free. If for no other reason, that makes Synergy unique.

Wireless tether

Root and use wireless tether
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
two options really...
First... If you are STOCK, then pay VZW to add the Mobile Broadband Connect feature (aka Mobile Hot Spot) to your account, and use the Built in Mobile Hot Spot app.
Why do this? you don't have to root or anything.. and you wan to abide by VZW's Terms of Service (TOS).
Second.. If you are rooted and/or using a custom rom, then use the link that Deltaechoe posted to install "Wifi Tether for Root"
Why do this? You just want to tether and don't care about VZW's TOS, or you accept any possible consequences for violating VZW's TOS should they decide to take action (I'm not saying VZW will do anything, but there is always that chance so use at your own risk... And I'm not going to debate if its right, wrong, ok, not ok, etc).

Just curious how that makes Synergy unique if Wifi Hotspot has been in CM7 for months?
im rooted and using Barnacle. Seems to work okay cuz i was able to make this post.
will I still have the speeds provided by the tethering?
I heard that foxfi 2.12 now supports jellybean devices, but supposedly only Verizon ones thus far. Has anybody running jellybean on their LTEVO been able to get foxfi or anything else to work without root?
When I turn on my foxfi, it automatically launches Sprint Mobile Hotspot, and it overrides Foxfi because devices trying to connect see the Sprint Mobile Hotspot instead of Foxfi.
Workarounds? Tips? Advice?

With all due respect , do you think I would have bothered to create this thread to ask a question if I was willing to root? Please, no trolling
Before I rooted, I looked and looked and couldn't find anything other than FoxFi that would do it. After I updated to JellyBean, it didn't work. That's the main reason I rooted, and now that I did root, I would never not root a device again, it's so much better. Your options are:
A) Pay Sprint $20 a month for a hotspot
B) Root
C) Downgrade your software (which I don't think is possible without root)
D) Wait for FoxFi to update some more
E) use PdaNet+ and only use USB tethering
F) Not have a Hotspot
Don't forget to use the thanks button!
Model: HTC Evo 4G LTE
Rom: Sense 5 Port
Kernel: Arc Reactor 0.3 capped at 1.89
Bootloader: HBoot 2.09 S-Off Facepalm
Recovery: TWRP 2.5.0.0
Best thing to do is root.
you can't make a phone do what you want if you aren't willing to get the privileges to do it. it's like having an admin account on your computer....wouldn't you rather have full control instead of being restricted?
If you're worried about harming your device, then just be extra careful and follow the directions step by step. past that, you're stuck with what you've got.
keep in mind that s-off is not the same as root. I think you SHOULD go s-off, but at least get your device to be YOUR device.
so if i follow this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38UOPSoJOPs after that i can load whatever ROM I want and stuff, right?
I'm not sure if the method in video is still compatible with recent software updates.
Head over to the development threads and the stickies and there are threads on how to root, and video links. There are good guides and lots of good info.
I too, consider root a necessity for android devices.

Well, what went wrong exactly? I also rooted and S-offed mine last night, albeit, successfully... PM or email me and I will help you out if you want.
I bet you didn't get TWRP to stick... Ran into some things myself.
USB
I've tried to USB tether with FoxFi/PDAnet but the option is not available; only WiFi tethering is allowed. I would rather not use WiFi (less secure, and slower than USB from what I've heard). Can someone help me get this working? Below are my specs:
Rom: BeanStalk
Kernel: stock
Bootloader: HBoot 2.09 S-Off Moonshine
Recovery: TWRP 2.6.3.0
OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks / Parallels Win7
Well I just got a Galaxy Note 2 on Sprint. I on the unlimited plan and I get 5GB of hot spot usage. For the first 2 weeks I was using foxfi and the data was being recorded as non hot spot data. Just seen now that for the last week foxfi is now using my hot spot data. What changed and is there a way I can teather with out data being recorded as hot spot usaged?
Hey xda, I'm kind of in a bit of a bind because I use PDANet+ as well as a sprint htc evo 4g lte. One thing I have trouble finding on here is a rom that supports both the square card reader and is a cm release. I like how fast and simple the cm releases are and pdanet+ works like a charm when tethering however, when i use a sense rom I have to use the usb tethering option instead of wifi tethering. I'm not asking for someone to scour the internet for a rom that has these traits but here is what im looking for:
CM
Handles the Square Card Reader
Handles the Wifi Tether Option in PDANet+
Has anyone encountered a rom that does this? Please let me know if you have.
Thanks,
HyperJ123
Why don't you just use WiFi tether for root users? It has worked on our phone for quite some time. Also, I'm pretty sure tethering is a native feature in Cyanogenmod.

Really? So it doesn't ask for permissions from sprint?
And what do I do about the square card reader? Is there a "driver" for it or...
So how can I enable this without having to pay for it? My old M7 developers edition turned this on no problem. I don't want to root so I can keep the OTA updates.

You're going to have to root to get it working no matter what. Last year, with the M7, someone created a modified apk that had to be flashed in recovery and allowed hotspot to work natively.
I always root just to get tethering and block ads. Currently, there's no solution for the tethering, but someone will figure it out.
Yeah, I flashed ARHD, works perfect! Hotspot is a go!
