Hey Guys, i just got my new transformer prime last week and while installing the new firmware versions this morning i ran into a problem. The first firmware update installed fine but while the camera firmware update was downloading, the screen locked up and wouldn't detect any touch input (taps or swipes).
I did the usual reboot a few times and the first time i tried it i was returned to the unlock screen but it still wouldn't register any touch input. I rebooted again and this time i was greeted with an error page containing three gears in a circle with and orange triangle in the middle and an exclamation mark in the triangle (no text describing what this means). This takes up the entire screen in landscape-mode and in portrait-mode it takes up the top half while the bottom half shows the bottom of the portrait-mode unlock screen and the system bar along the bottom.
Android is still functioning as i can see notifications come and go on the bottom (gmail popped up and i checked it on my laptop and the notification went away) but when the tablet is connected to my PC it doesn't show thing on the device. The device comes up but the computer shows it as empty.
If anyone knows anything about this or any possible fixes i'd appreciate them greatly.
Thanks people
Edit: Problem Resolved - Let the tablet die, recharge it, turn it back on and it should be working again
Probably same problem as described here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1423503&page=12
Hope you resolve this.....
I would try rebooting again. then manually install or reapply the update though PC and Asus website where they have the firmware/system updates to manually install into prime. or you could even try the reset hole on the side or bringing up the bootloader menu to do a factory reset. good luck. post results or anything else you might have encountered.
How can i get to the bootloader menu to do the factory reset without the touch screen. the tablet isn't rooted if that matters
Mine did the same thing. I called up Asus and they are wanting me to send mine in and let them fix it, i decided i might want to check here and see if this was just me or if it was a problem shared by others....

you can't manually install the updates without using the touchscreen which doesn't work.... i thought about that and tried to find some way of remotely doing this with some sort of software but Asus doesn't give a way of doing this...

its some combination of holding volume down and power button at the same time for a couple secs. it could be the opposite though, hold volume up and power down. can't exactly remember which one. it is here within the threads though. or you could even call Asus for the right combo on how to factory reset device back to like it was in the box. if manually installing software won't work since touchscreen unresponsive, factory reset may be only option. since you use the hardware keys to initiate actions. cuz once in menu, you use volume down to scroll to factory reset. then pressing volume up confirms actions. double check which combo is the one to initiate the menu. good luck and hope you can bring back the prime to its normal working state.
I called Asus Earlier and they went through the Factory reset process, but even that won't work. they ended up asking me to send it in to them to be fixed. its the same for others in this thread.
I called ASUS, they told me that there were numerous reports of this error and that they would email me or call me within 24-48 hours with a report on my "case". So apparently they know and there trying to do something about it whether or not that's an OTA software fix or if we have to send them all in to get them reset remains to be seen.
thats helpful to know

You will lose all your data if you do this...you are warned.
Hold down the Vol-down and power button. After the vibration of it restarting release both buttons. You will see some writing on the screen...don't tuch anything. After about 5 secs, you will be taken to a screen with 2 pictures: one saying "WIPE DATA" and the other a picture of the android mascot. Use the vol down to navigate between options and the vol up to select options. You will be asked to confirm your selection before it actually kicks off. Hope this helps.
Hi, the device is still usable by connecting the prime to a dock and using a USB mouse.
I've described this in the "New Firmware..." thread as well.
From the other threads it does seem like Factory Reseting makes no difference, and I will not do it because right now I have full root access (adb shell - su)
I believe with it, we could try and figure out how to fix the situation.
So if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Also, is this the "official" My transformer prime is bricked thread now?
thanks for the tip, but it didn't work. oh well... this is where Asus's locked bootloaders come back to get them. they could easily push out a recovery image and tell how to boot into the bootloader and flash it. but because they went with locked, they ended up screwing us over.....
Hi,
so by killing this process I am now able to get into the System via USB Mouse and use my prime, without getting the "orange gears" screen. That makes my prime at least partially usable again.

For those of you with mouse access to the device
go to this address
ASUS Support
Select ANDROID as OS > Click FIRMWARE > Click your device US/WW (probably most of you are US)
Download the firmware file. Push it to you SD Card through any method.
A Triangle [!] will appear in your status bar.
Click on it
It will ask you to install the update, install it
Wait a few
The firmware should be reset (hopefully)
tell me how it goes!
A person on the transformers forum said he drained his tablet by rebooting it till it ran out of battery. Then charged it and did a factory wipe and now it functioning.

This has not worked for me so far, probably because it is a "downgrade" from the current system.
BTW this is what I get with dmsg
Code:
<3>[ 285.082630] asuspec: [asuspec_dockram_read_battery] Fail to read dockram b
attery, status -110
<3>[ 285.082960] asuspec: [asuspec_battery_monitor] Fail to access battery info

<3>[ 285.084134] power_supply battery: driver failed to report `status' propert

Seems pretty obvious there is something wrong with the battery service.

Yeah I technically COULD push it, since I have root. But seems risky.

I had a problem with the power button not working and I was adviced to reflash the original ROM (I never did a ROM upgrade) so I picked the original and latest Cingular ROM. Flashing strated and then hung for a while @ 80% progress, few minutes after continued up to 95% progress and at that point I got ERROR 326 message (INVALID COMMAND) stating that the NBF file couldn´t be used for this phone. I dissconnected the phone and did a soft reset and what I got was the BOOTLOAD SCREEN and since then I can not make the phone exit from it. Later I tried flashing RUU_RIsidoro_2.26.10.2_WWE+CF2SP1_G4, this time it went all the way to 100% progress and the congratulations screen, I made a soft reset (the only way I know to exit the bootload mode) and I got momentarly the HTC innovation screen and right away dissapeared to enter in bootload screen again.
Then I reflash ROM with RUU_Qtek_9100_AKU2_21878_024711_ESN_G4, this time it went all the way up to 100% and success screen appeared, the phone rebooted and is up and running although with inoperant power button.
Since you've successfully reflashed your phone and the power button isn't still working have you considered a hardware fault?
Look for some info/pics on how to disassemble your wizard to verify if the button is well soldered to the board

Luiggi, pls tell me how to flash the phone while in the bootloader screen?!?
There's no secret to flash while in bootloader screen. Use the RUU file. It might take a little while longer to detect the phone but goes all the way to the end
Yes, it has to be a hardware issue

I´ll try the disassembly and perhaps is not a big deal to fix it, I got a copy of the service manual posted in some of the forums, and I´ll give it a try.
Thanks for the advice!

Try first a soft reset while in the BL screen, if doesn´t react then do what I did:
I just plugged the USB cable and run the RUU!! As simple as that and as risky as the ROM you select not being the right one.
OK title says it all, and yes I have been reading for the last 3hrs, all the possible solutions.
HD2 EU Vodafone UK
So here is what I have tried:-
Task 29 + flash stock rom - stuck -
Hard reset - stuck
remove HSPL - stuck
flash latest Vodafone rom from HTC 3.14.161.3 - stuck - also SPL now 3.03
flash old stock to downgrade SPL to 1.66 - stuck
Have also tried reinstalling MAGLDR - stuck - magldr doesn't even show.
I never get flash failed, and yet it will not get past the Tri coloured bootloader.
Also I cannot get it to flash from SD. I have tried holding the endcall and vol down but it just goes to the loader.
Vol Up and endcall goes to hard reset.
And, to make it worse, it's not even mine. I was returning it to Winmo for a mate.
Phones been running Android nand since March without problems.
All suggestions welcome.

that would indicate a stuck volume down button, since hard reset is volup and voldown. (You dont need to hold power, tap and release it, its teh vol buttons you hold)
You are quite right about the vol up and down for reset.
Also, I had been considering the possibility of a stuck button.
I will see if i can prove or disprove it.
Thanks for the response.
Does anybody know how many buttons are in the volume control rocker?
Is it:-
1 for down volume
1 for up volume
and another for both when you hold both in?
I am still trying to decide if the down volume button is stuck on.
When I hold both down I can get into reset mode, but if I only press the up it still goes to tri colour.
So I am still not sure if the down is stuck on.
3 buttons in the rocker could explain why up only doesn't go to reset but 2 buttons only would confirm that the down is not stuck on.
All comments welcome
two, you can feel them click on individually when you press them.
I too can only feel 2 and that would imply that the down is not stuck.
When I hold the up button and switch on it goes to boot loader, if it was stuck shouldn't the phone have gone to reset?
I was hoping it was like a mouse wheel with forwards, backwards and click down which is 3 positions.
I'm running out of things to try.
If it's not stuck why does it keep going to bootloader with out being asked?
Why can I flash roms and HSPL without any failure messages but still find no change on reboot?
Thanks for the replies and please keep them comming
I have managed to flash from SD. I tried a different card.
I have attached a pic of the screen saying update complete, update success.
But still stuck in bootloader
well, if it isnt hardware, it must be a corrupted bootloader issue, or bad nand blocks perhaps. ive seen quite a few 'only enters bootoader' threads over the yrs, but never really noticed a solution.
sorry, no suggestions, other than perhaps give teh freezer trick a go?
I'm desperate enough to try almost anything.
I will have to read up on the freezer trick.( don't want to kill it completely)
I have also contacted a couple of repairers for a quote using Jtag. the first said "sorry bricked" and I'm still waiting for the second reply.
Also reading up on Goldcards, maybe that's another option?
Thanks again for the reply.

could be tho unlikely (sorry) goldcard flashing is just sd flashing but bypasses carrier and region checks.
if you can get the serial of your sd card, i can make you a goldcard image, no problem. (Don't bother using the free goldcard page on revskills website, its for android and wp7 phones) . PM me the serial and an email address if you want one.
@samsamuel Thanks for all your help and advice.
I have sent it off for repair today.
As I said in the first post, it's not even mine I was re flashing winmo 6.5 so my mate could sell it.
Hopefully it will be all sorted now.
Update.
I contacted 3 repairers.
1st said "sorry dead"
2nd said "£40 + postage"
3rd said "£21 which became £29 all in"
So I sent it to 3rd one, got a quick reply "sorry unable to fix, here is a full refund" and they returned it via 1st class post.
So yesterday I've got the phone in my hands, poped in the battery and I am presented on screen with a triangle and the words "flash failed please try again"
So task 29, now back with a tricoloured screen. See attached.
Now tried a custom Winmo, and it works
So I tried 2 Vodafone and 1 O2 stock roms and they all failed at 9%.
Tried another custom Winmo, and again working
So finally, I have task 29, CLK, clockwork v5 and latest MIUI. All working just fine.
Is there a stock looking custom winmo that anybody can recommend?
Hah, a lucky outcome. The radio is stuck, hence stock roms failing, but lucky for you its still a working radio, so customs are working. About the best result you could get, considering.
I'd say try the Artemis rom, but that will require spl 3.03.hspl, and occasionally the stuck radio issue messes with changing spl,,
Not so sure about your stuck radio theory, I have been able to change the radio without an issue.
I will give Artemis rom a go.
thanks for all the support.
Merry Christmas

Updated to ICS last night and everything worked smoothly. I shut down the device and then started it an hour later and even though it started the touchscreen did not worked. So I forced it to restart by holding down power and vol + button. It restarted but now I just get a "gears screen" and nothing works. If I put the tablet in Portrait mode, I can see the wallpaper in the back but I still cannot get to it. I have already tried "reset" but nothing happens.
Any suggestion?

Different issue entirely.
Unfortunately I think you have a brick. There were other threads regarding this very same issue after the .33 update, don't know if it was resolved any other way than sending the unit back.
Try letting the battery completly drain, and then charge it and power on the tablet. This should hopefully solve your problem.
So what's the best way to drain the battery, without it even working?
Posted via the Samsung Galaxy S™ II Skyrocket™ using xda premium.
Once Asus release the zip update file, just download it and manually update.
place the update.zip on the root of your MicroSD card and turn the device off.
Power + Vol down .. then Vol up when the writing appears.
How long does that usually take Asus? I am running close to my return window at Best buy.
Posted via the Samsung Galaxy S™ II Skyrocket™.
No idea, but it will be listed here ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/TF201
youll need the US version 4.0.3 ...when its available.
Failing that, someone has uploaded the OTA version (its in the dev section) but i dont know if you can just flash that .. ?
EDIT **
I would ignore the OTA update in the dev section as i've just read through it and it doesnt seem like itll be of any use ...
Can I just go back to HC and then do an OTA update to ICS.

Is there a mirror for downloading that file? Asus servers are horrible, the download has been running for more than an hour and still shows that I have 2 more hours to go..... WTF !!
OK I did the following and still no luck.

- Powered TP with Power Button + Vol-. Got the recovery message but after that I got an icon that looked like it was loading something but then I got another icon. (see pics)

My best guess is that you turn on with power+vol down and then from that menu select the factory reset option.
I believe it is:
PWR + VOL DWN
VOL DWN (to change from boot to system wipe)
VOL UP (to confirm system wipe)
I'll confirm shortly, I'm copying a file right now.

Yes, you are correct. I was not doing the correct button combination. I finally got it to wipe data but after the reboot, I still get the same screen (gears with exclamation mark).
After the wipe, I tried doing the the downgrade again but ended but with the same screen of downed android with an exclamation mark.

why on earth the at&t Lineup of SGS family always getting the same

I never had SoDs with my Infuse either, except for the early days when I was unaware of the 800 MHz suspend limitation, or when I was too aggressive with undervolting.
SetCPU with a screen off profile that has a limit of less than 800 MHz = almost guaranteed SoD on unpatched kernels. But anyone who is rooted running SetCPU can install a patched kernel to fix that. The 800 MHz suspend limit issue doesn't affect anyone with a stock device.
I do recall that something about Widget Locker somehow causes SoDs (most likely because it mucks around with the lockscreen code), but again - that's not an issue with a stock phone.
i had SoD on stock firmware and i get it about 3 times a week on CM7.1 as well. it's the most frustrating thing about this phone. and that is saying something

It's Sleep of Death.
Meaning when you put the phone into sleep, it actually goes into coma .
You have to spank it a few times before it wakes up.
I had an AT&T GS1 that had major SoD issues. It's the most annoying thing ever.
Now my GS2 just has battery issues, where the Android system takes up to 80% of the phone's battery life sometimes.

Reinstall using Kies Firmware Upgrade And Initialization
I did the following suggested by someone at At&T forum. It seems working. I am posting detailed steps here for anyone who is interested,
Please backup everything on your phone memory before you attempt this. This will wipe out your phone completely.
1. Open Samsung Kies as Administrator
2. Goto Tools -> Firmware upgrade and initialization
3. Enter the model name SGH-I777 (in all upper case letters)
4. Enter the Serial Number of your phone. This can be found under the batter.
5. Click OK. Then you need to accept the warning and it will tell you which firmware it is going to flash onto your phone. It will be 4.0.4. Accept that as well.
5. It will download the necessary files. At this point you can shut down the phone and remove the battery and re-insert the battery.
6. The while pressing the volume Up and Down keys simultaneously (Not the power button) plug the USB cable. Your phone should boot into download mode. It will display a message Downloading..... on the screen.
7. Start Upgrade button on the Kies upgrade screen should now be activated. If not, you may need to reinstall the USB drivers for i777 and may need to reinstall Kies.
8. Once you hit Start Upgrade button, it will start download the proper firmware from the web and then start sending it to the phone. You will see a progress bar in the phone as well. Sometimes it could give you an error similar to "DLL load failure..." If that happened, try change the Compatibility mode of Samsung Kies to Windows Vista SP2 and run in Administrator mode. This can be done by right clicking on Kies icon and selecting Properties --> Compatibility tab.
9. Once the Kies finish transferring the firmware to the phone, the phone will start installing it and once finished, it will reboot.
10. I also factory reset the phone after the upgrade by booting into stock recovery console. You can shut down the phone, press Volume UP + DOWN together and press power button without releasing the volume keys. Then select Factory Wipe and hit Power button.
11. I disabled all the AT&T bloatware anyway because I don't like them and use them anyway. I don't know that was the case because it didn't help me earlier.
Now my phone works as it used to be. 4.0.4 seems to have a good battery life even with WiFi switched on all the time. Earlier if I keep WiFi on for few hours it completely drains my battery. I am happy with my phone again.
Thanks scot070 at AT&T forum for the wonderful tip.

Way to go, necroposter. Raised this one from the dead with a post that has little, if anything, to do with SoDs. Genius!
Update is being pushed out slowly, but I figured out a way to forcibly do it in kies.
It simple. Do not plug in your phone while you are doing this.
First, make sure you update to the new version of kies. Then go to the menu bar> tools, then firmware upgrade and initialization.
Click until you get to the screen that asks you to input your S/N and Model name of your phone. Enter in these details. It's behind the battery.
Once you do this, a screen will pop up asking if you are sure you want to upgrade to CSC:LE5. AKA ice cream sandwich.
At this point, plug in your phone and it'll go through.
Your welcome.
EDIT: as of today, Monday June 25th 2012, at 11:00 AM, the update is officially available through KIES. If you don't see it now, a popup telling you to upgrade will appear by tomorrow.
EDIT 2: DO NOT UPDATE TO ICS. IT SUCKS. AND IT IS NOT NEARLY AS SMOOTH AS GINGERBREAD. If you hate android lag, the update will almost certianly piss you off. If you have questions about how its different, just ask. I already downgraded to gingerbread again. ICS = Not missed.
EDIT 3: (copy pasta from a post I made)

Can you "downgrade" unrooted from Kies as easily as upgrading?

No. I assumed that the update through kies updated the bootloaders, so I found a stock 2.3.4 one click odin executable W/ Bootloaders in the development section and flashed that. Make sure you factory reset and clear cache in 3e recovery before you do so. New bootloaders can't take advantage of the Jig. I also didn't want to find out what flashing gingerbread on ICS bootloaders would do my phone.
I find 2.3.6 has battery issues, and I find 2.3.4 to be THE most stable release.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20229527&postcount=46
The file you want from this page is the I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries, and you want the odin3 one click download. It's one of the ones with the warning text in red.
To restore your phone to stock 2.3.4 once on ICS do the following:
1) Boot into 3e recovery (power + volume down + volume up)
-Wipe Cache
-Factory Restore
2) Pull battery
-boot into download mode (volume down + volume up, then connect phone to computer while buttons are simultaneously pressed)
3) Open the one click executable. Make sure it recognizes the phone
-It will say [COM8] or something. Just make sure its green.
4) Flash it. It will work. after you boot up into gingerbread, If the system freezes after the At&t logo just go back into 3e recovery and wipe cache + factory reset again. It will work. Trust me.
Note: ODIN is a very tricky piece of software. When you click flash, it will probably not work and say "failed" or something along those lines. Try it again. It will work. It took me almost 20 tries to get the flash to go through. Also try flashing it as soon as you plug in your phone (not even 2 seconds after it is recognized). That seems to work. Don't be worried if it never seems to go through.
Note: YOU ARE FLASHING BOOTLOADERS. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL. If ODIN DOES NOT WORK OR YOUR COMPUTER SHUTS OFF HALFWAY THOUGH, OR ODIN QUITS, NEVER PULL THE BATTERY FROM YOUR PHONE. As long as you see a downloading sign on your phone, your phone is ALWAYS recoverable. Just open up the odin executable again, make sure your phone is recognized, and restart the process. If odin freezes halfway through the process, always restart odin, NEVER touch your phone. Your phone can always be written to while in the download state. This is how 99% of all bricking happens, because people always feel the need to turn off their phone in the middle of the process.
Cookies for the effort.
Already common knowledge for forcing OTA updates, at least to anyone that actually takes the time to read/search the forums.

Nice trick by the way op
Thanks for the trick. One question - how long did it take for you (or for anyone else who decided to use this method)? It's been stuck at the 90% value for about 2 hours for me, and I'm beginning to get a little worried, since these things don't normally take so long (according to friends I've asked, anyhoo). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about 90% fnished downloading/extracting? or 90% putting it on the phone (with the green bar going across the phone)?
If it hasn't started putting it on the phone yet you should be fine to unplug it and start over. If you remove cable while it's actually putting in on the phone, you will have problems. not sure which kind though. maybe just a soft brick. you should be able to get back to download mode though.

I apologize for not being specific - 90% putting it on the phone, I presume, since that green bar you mentioned is there (with the "Downloading..." underscored with a "Do not turn off target !!").
Assuming this is beyond the norm, do you think I have no choice but to risk the soft brick?
EDIT: Oops, it's actually a blue bar. My bad. So it's safe to disengage then?

Yeah, if it's been at that point for that long, you will have to risk it. do you have a jig? if you don't, invest in one. they are worth having around.
Let us know if it works out. I'm crossing my fingers for you.

No, I don't...I'll be sure to purchase one as soon as possible.
As for the phone, I shut down my computer and unplugged it - received a "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue" screen. At the moment, I'm looking around for a fix. This seems to be a soft brick, though, so I'm optimistic. If there is anything you could suggest for me, it'd be greatly appreciated.

see if this works: hold down both volume keys at the same time. then, while holding them, plug in your usb cable. hold the keys until you see a screen with green text. you will then hit the vol up key o get to download mode. then you could start the whole process over again through KIES.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but when I enter the imei into the s/n blank it tells me it's not a valid serial number. I've tried entering the actual s/n and I get a weird message in what looks like Chinese. Any other suggestions?

Yeah, the IMEI won't work anyway.
That weird message was coming up the day that Samsung said their servers would be down (yesterday). They may have figured out that people were getting the "recovery" firmware that way and disabled it. Who knows.
So any word if that method will work now?

I tried this method but now my phone only shows the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue error." I tried doing the recovery process on kies and tried to install the firmware again but to no avail. Does anyone have an idea how to work around this?

You could try the one-click downloader in the Download Repository. The link is there, but the file is still uploading to dropbox. You'll get a 404 error until the upload is complete. Dropbox is really slow uploading things. Link to the Download Repository is in my signature.
Kies is crap
I've been trying and trying to download from Kies but when I plug in my phone it says I'm up to date and when I try to do the manual update it tells me my serial number is wrong and to try again...any suggestions?
