[Q] CyanogenMod or Icecream Sunday? - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Hi! Newbie here.
I know there's probably a similar thread, but this is more detailed.
I'm using Ace, 2.3.4. Already rooted (I have the Superuser icon!)
I really want to try CyanogenMod, one that is STABLE. By stable, I mean:
1. No crashes
2. No lags
3. No non-working apps
4. No extreme temperature rise in tethering (or is that to be expected?)
......and last but not least
5. No battery issues (miserable battery life)
QUESTIONS:
1. (Unrelated) When someone here says "oc", does he/she mean overclocking?
2. If there IS a CyanogenMod version for my particular needs, how does it compare to Android 2.3.4 ? Because if it's slower, forget it.
3. If there isn't a CM version that I need, is Icecream Sunday the next best thing?
I've read about it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324948
4. Who the heck is Behrad? In the above link, someone says "Behrad's CM7". I'm confused. I thought Cyanogen (Steve) is the developer of CM7.
5. Are custom ROM's generally faster than stock ROM/firmware even without overclocking? Because if not, what's the point??
6. I would really appreciate it if you guys would just recommend something, instead of saying "whatever fits you is best for you". Not being rude.
Thanks guys!

1) Yes .
2) All Cyanogenmod versions are better than stock , but are less stable .
It's like trade of performance for stability .
3) ICSunday is based on CM7 .
4) Cyanogen is the ORIGINAL creator of Cyanogenmod . BehradGH is someone who compiled CM7 for the Galaxy Ace . Do not be so evil .
5) Some ROMs (like Gingercruzt) are slower than stock , but provide better eye candy (visuals)
6) We don't know what the heck you want .

By reading your questions regarding stability, temperature, I suggest you just stick to stock ROMs.

What is OPS file?

No; sorry if I sounded like that. I'm unconsciously an a-hole at times.
Anyway, by suggested stock ROMs because, according from your preference:
1. No crashes
3. No non-working apps
4. No extreme temperature rise
5. No battery issues
These are almost non-apparent in stock ROMs. The only thing you'll get are some lags here-and-there, and even lags are existent in CM ROMs.
Again, sorry for my attitude.

Chill man, it's nothing.
You guys keep saying that it's like trading stability for performance. I swear I've read somewhere that cumtom roms actually help with the stability issue, and I'm pretty sure it was a credible website. I've been searching the web for the past hour looking for that site so I can show it to you guys. I can't find it anymore, but I swear by it.
What I'm trying to say is, you guys say customs are less stable, some are saying otherwise. I'm a little confused, so I'll ask you this:
Performance (speed) and customization VS stability. Obviously for you guys, you will choose the former. Is it because you think the perks of the former far outweigh stability? Or are you just doing it for the fun of it?

Some custom ROMs do have the stability. In fact, CyanogenMod is quite stable, if supported by official developers. But since we have no official support, we can only make do with what our developers can offer (which is awesome, btw).
Actually, I wouldn't say all of us. Perhaps 45/45. I'd say the remaining 10 are testers/developers who are actively changing between ROMs and their tweaks.
For me, I just like customization. I come from a Linux background (before I came to Android) and I'm really not comfortable not having complete control of my system.

You want all the stuff than take the myth its awesome and quiet stable

made by Robinandroid

yea...I agree with shailpancholi..The myth rom might be suitable for u according what u want..

if you want ICS mate, you should wait for a bit, its under development, it should worth it...

I've tried quite a few and I personally find ICS final has been the most stable and by far the fastest.

About battery, if data closed, battery goes all day; but using 3g data , wifi , bt or gps it drain about 1 hour or less.(for me of course)

This is true. However, deep inside I really wish to ask that as I tried so many and so hard to decide.
Here's a quick breakdown
Cognition
- smooth
- why I dislike: The feel of the UI (self preference)
Litening 4.1
- GREAT
- really fast in speed
- why I dislike: been too long see-ing blue colour
VillianROM
- GREAT
- smooth UI, fun to play, many tweaks according to your liking
- why I dislike: seeing too much green robot is boring (if you get what I mean)
Exynos Extreme
- current favourite
- very smooth, like the part where the author actually remove unwanted apps for us
- downside: 3.4 is a little buggy (can't copy and paste), 3.3 is smooth and GREAT
Generally, Litening 4.1 give good battery life. Exynos too but I am using Exynos with SpeedMOD so a little different here.
There you go

It's a fair question but prbably should have asked which ROM people prefer. I hate it when people get flamed for asking which ROM people like best. Some of us don't have the time to download every ROM out there and just want to hear others' opinions..
Keep the opinions coming - I want to be tempted away from stock!
Exynos. best ive used so far

I got to agree. Some reason, it felt unique compared to Litening and the rest. Not sure why though.
The best ROM is subjective and will probably change within a week of this question been asked.

[POLL] What type of N.E.A.R. would you like to see?

Hi Galaxy SII users! For the first N.E.A.R. ROM (New Era Android Rom), what type of rom would you like to see? A Gingerbread based rom again but with the N.E.A.K. kernel integrated and specially modified for it or a new ICS based rom but for the moment without N.E.A.K. (because has not yet been released kernel source)? Vote all!!!!
I have already voted for ICS XD
I voted GB as ICS is not yet mature. And I need a stable ROM I can depend on for personal use and also for work.
Let ICS wait until Samsung delivers us a full grown version and then use that as base for a new ROM.
GB without NEAK .

If we release a rom, it will be WITH NEAK Kernel....
So please, if you don't like it, just go for another rom, maybe u don't know that customizing a rom is pretty much simple, anyone can do that and it's mainly do a stupid theme (very easy), mod 2-3 apps (or better copy from others), and add a few scripts that no one knows what are they doing...
I've developed ROMs for the GS1, and all i can say is that a rom is ONLY made by a kernel for performances, smoothness and battery life
All the rest is graphical, that's why the NEAR Project is meant to give NEAK users a really good and almost perfect user interface and experience to enjoy their phones as much as possible with the smoothness of NEAK Kernel
Don't like my opinion? Just go away and search for another usual "ROM", probably kanged from other good devs

Also, as i read, u know almost nothing on how are kernels made, and i'm thinking u see a ROM as a Kernel, when they are completely different in way of development and skills needed
Just my 2 cents

GB N.E.A.R. all the way at the moment.
Until a stable and usable version of ICS comes out, then it must be GB.
There's already too many half arsed attempts at ICS ROM's out there already. I want something that is 100% stable and usable.

One i did not say NEAK was bad i gave an answer on my first post GB No NEAK no more . OK i misunderstood the rather ambiguous original post .

Thats one good reason for me to disregard anything you say as being valid .
Why well you seem to be able to twist words and put a totally different context in to the reply .
You say i have no idea how kernels are made nothing in my posts on this thread give any indication as to that .
You keep banging on about custom roms and me thinking a kernel is a rom nonsense .
You jump in again with a lack of knowledge and say
and please don't say that a rom is better than another when only the theme is different
Where the f^^^ have i said that .
Fact i have a self customized rom not from XDA .
Fact that rom has had a number of kernels installed over a number of weeks kernels not themes .
Fact kernel of choice is not based upon builders hype and lets face it they are all hyped as the best yet . its actually based upon two factors one my usage and two an independent test .
Fact is my original reply was a mistake as i read the OP wrong or misunderstood its context .
Fact you then jump down my throat in a number of posts accusing me of not knowing what a kernel is and thinking like some ignorant noob saying one kernel is better cause it has a better theme .
Now my regard for Devs and the work they do is very high even for the ones where i don't use their stuff . it would have been for you also before you started slagging me off with your unfounded comments .
I have no intention of prolonging your stupid replies by posting in this thread again .

when I read through the github and look at the closed issues and still open , i see there are some closed issues that still remain as unsolved in your current beta? is there any reason you close them on github without fixing them? do you intend on solving these problems? i like to see that your building a CM9 rom for our ace, but i wasnt the slightest bit impressed with beta4, the quality of worksmanship was somewhat... sloppy if you ask me.

I had intermittent wifi problems, gallery app crashing, gallery widget failure, at the time I had no USB cable connected, and UMS notification would remain in top left, and randomly say "USB cable disconnected", music playback was skippy.
I liked how smooth it was, but it seemed very irresponsive, and sometimes the keyboard would stay on screen.

The given github is only more or less an intermediate fake bug tracker with no real corresponding CM9 source code as backup. You will not find any fixes in the CM9 sources from Alpha1 to Beta4 releases on there. He's like Houdini. Throwing quick binary fixes from nowhere at the head of his fans and they're all happily screaming for more candies. I'm sure you already heard of PDroid or CarrierIQ, right?

The last edit of the source on github was made by yourself. And it was only an edit of a readme file (->https://github.com/GalaxyICS/androi...70efa53c1c6f6f47a7974a29b65e39d79676e3#ReadMe).
I highly doubt that you or anybody else will be able to build Beta4 from the public available github sources. It is his business model anyway. As long as there are happy customers eagerly supporting it, I don't care. Au contraire ... I hope he can milk and squeeze out of them as much as he can! Why? Because they both have found each other and do represent a prime example of a natural symbiotic relationship of demand and supply in a capitalistic marketplace.
@all_the_haters
Read my post carefully again (at least 10 times; ask google translate or a friend of yours with more english capabilities to explain it to you in your mother tongue) and tell me where I'm ranting or dissing anyone at. I'm just making an educated guess based on the freely puclic available resources. Freeing you from the burden to do it yourself. Take as is or just ignore it. I myself have a clear picture of you: One who does not even know what logcat is but pathetically standing up eagerly fighting and screaming for a beta development software in a development thread dissing others with more than off topic comments himself. If this picture of yours is not that sad, I might want to laugh about it, but currently I rather want to cry about this disgusting fact.
Otherwise, I'm wishing you all a happy and long lasting wet ICS dream from the bottom of my pure and truthful heart. ...
Btw, here is a counterexample of a quality wokrsmanship.

There were wifi issues, but they have been fixed. If you still have them, connect to your wifi and switch to static IP. (Works fine for me.)
The usb debugging did not work, but Maclaw has fixed it and I think it will be in the next release.
Gallery works for me, however, sometimes it does not work. Maclaw said that the gallery is RAM hungry and there is not way to fix this unless you can get more RAM installed on your ace.(Which is not possible.)
Music player works fine, did you try disabling shake and flip actions? (It works fine for me even with them.)
The keyboard is a genuine issue and I think it comes under the "flick issue" in which some menus do not disappear even after pressing OK.

Never expected more than this from the master troll in here. Or does your sister(s) hacked your XDA account again? Because I myself have a hard time to explain to my virtual little AND big sisters what CM or AOSP even is (let alone AOKP)! ...
Does it make any sense to you:
Requesting write acces to Mc CM9 github.
Edit the readme file.
Asking for help to compile AOKP in the Mc CM9 development thread?
If you don't really seriously want to work on CM9 and contribute bugfixes, than I guess you wanted only to get on the list of the new superheroes? Congrats: You've done it good!
And if I do remember it correctly, you did even write a HOWTO to compile AOSP/AOKP somewhere yourself, didn't you? Putting the fact aside, that I did the little mistake about your request with the Mc CM9 build itself, my conclusive statement still holds. What are you so mad about then?
Either way, I'm wishing you all the best luck to successfully compile AOKP or CM9 ICS builts and share it again by a nice noob proven tutorial (Don't forget to make proper credits to MacLaw and buy him a new PC by then!). ...

Best AOKP ROM out now!!!

So guys i know there are alot of AOKP roms for the i9100 out now, but wich one do u guys recommend me to flash and why?
Some good AOKP roms out now:
1. hydrogen ics
2.bezke's aokp ics
3.ressurection ics v1.2(recommended)
4.dragon ics
Which one's ''THE BEAST'' ???
Personal preference. You're going to get answers saying 6 of one, half a dozen of another.
Try them out, decide for yourself.
there is no such thing like "The Best" ROM in Android as far as i know ... bcause every ROM have own plus and minus so .... u better try one and other to get the best result for ur personal use
hey, well this is not a simple question.u decide what is the best for u...i try them all and for me the best for now is hydrogen ics 08.04.
good luck!i hope that u find the rom u like
cheers!
HyDroG3n ICS 10.04 = smooth
Another to consider is the R4 ROM, this very well.
Hydrogen seems to be getting a quick support.

This article should be a good introduction.
http://www.androidauthority.com/aokp-team-kang-custom-rom-73889/
There is no such thing as the "best rom". You have your phone setup differently to everyone else, you use your phone differently to everyone else and your phone came out of the factory slightly differently to everyone else's.
A rom that runs well for me might not run well for you.
I suggest you go the development sections of the forum & read the first few pages and the the last 10-20 pages of the particular threads devoted to different roms. That way you will get an idea of the features/pluses/minuses of each rom, and also see other users' experiences with that rom.
Then you can test different roms for yourself to find one that works best for you.

[Asking For] Tips on how to improve/lengthen Xperia S' battery life/usage

Good day to all on XDA. I would like to ask for tips on how to improve one's Xperia S' battery life (of course with ICS already installed). It could be with the use of apps, some slight changes with the settings, etc. This would really help out newbies (most especially me since I'm new to the Android Bonanza and I'm still considering buying a Xperia S). Thanks for those considerate people who'll reply to this thread. And for those who haven't but has something on his/her mind, please do share.
Ciaossu!~ :good:
What improves the battery life significantly is switching from 3g to 2g when you don't really need fast connection. It's enough for getting mails etc and greatly increases the battery life.
You can use a data switch widget for fast changing to 3g when you're planning on watching a YouTube video or look up some sites.
Also, turning the display brightness down helps a lot, I keep it at 70%, that's bright enough even in the sun.
These settings already help to improve the battery without even needing to install anything.

I don't know your end but the battery on my Xperia S is decent already. Just keep your birghtness level down to 30%. Remove bloadwares like the facebook and foursquare, those apps suck your battery more than anything. Turn off 3G when you don't need it.
Just turn off data traffic and set screen brightness to 50%. Battery seems to last forever like this.
As rhogz mentioned there is already a thread addressing this topic.
Basically the screen is what uses the most battery. I try and keep mine at minimum brightness when indoors, up to 50% outdoors.
If you have the option, flashing a custom kernel and our Rom may also help. Last week I was on stock ics rom and kernel, and lost about 1% per hour overnight alone. Custom kernel and rom now and that has halved or less. Deep sleep is achieved!

I change a line in the build.prop to 1750 instead of 1500. Seems to work but could be placebo I guess.

I've noticed that using the hotplug governor has greatly increased my battery life, even when overclocked at 1.89gHz

May I ask, good sir ( ), what flashing a custom kernel and rom is? And is there a thread regarding that?? This could really help me with the Xperia S as I am almost close on buying on and once I receive it, I'll update it directly to ICS.

Well I'd suggest updating to ICS via official means using either PCCompanion or the Sony Ericsson Update Service programs and using that for a few days to benchmark your battery. I'm not a developer and am new to smartphones having used a w810i for the past 8yrs....... Still works like a boss! Read up on as much information as you can about the terminology and technology available to you when you choose to customise your phone in the meantime. I think the first five or so threads in the Xperia S Android development section will give you an understanding of what must be done to better your battery life.
Regards!

Thanks for the heads-up! Yeah recently I've read some threads though I am still confused to what should I do first and the second and so on. I've read a thread wherein you'll just "flash" the ICS to your phone. Is that really recommended or should I follow what you've just said and update the phone thru official means? Thanks again for replying.

Do you have the phone yet? I myself would wait until then before worrying about anything too much, especially if you are new to android. It is much easier to have the phone to fiddle with and learn as you go. Cause some of this stuff does sound rather crazy our confusing at 1st
The software you get with it will update you to the latest ics nice and easily. And then you may find that the phone suits you perfectly (cause it is a very nice phone ) or you may find some issues that are more specific, but that's what this forum is for

you are concerned that the xps uses automatic brightness right? the brightness will go up to 100% in sunlight.. test it for yourself by simply checking the difference.. put your brightness on 70% outside and then slide to 100 .. you wont see any difference

I think you should use the phone a while with gingerbread to understand the options, how to use the phone I don't know, use it the sufficient time to get knowledge about the phone.
