It has come to my attention that a number of regional OTA updates are now rolling out, specifically US and some Asian areas appear to be in progress.
The reason for this post is for those users who specifically want the regional HoneyComb variant for their region and language, which is perfectly natural and
something which I completely understand.
Firstly some ground rules, so that nobody feels I'm ignoring them specifically:
1. Do not PM me if you "soft brick" ( white screen with HTC logo )
2. Do no PM me with questions about what to do next.
3. Do not PM me about anything to do with upgrades PERIOD.
I will not answer PMs about OTA upgrades unless I specifically request that you PM me. So as you can see I'm not ignoring anyone specifically, I'm ignoring everyone who PM's me about upgrades. The reason for this is as my signature says, questions should be asked in the open forums so everyone can benefit from the information.
Please post any questions or problems encountered in this thread and not in multiple other threads. I will do what I can to help when I can as I'm sure will others.
Above all else don't panic. If your are S-OFF almost anything is fixable provided to don't panic and do something foolish.
What I need in order to give you the simplest and most painless upgrade process is a copy of the OTA zip file for your region.
If you have already gone ahead and tried to apply the OTA and are now stuck on a white screen with the HTC logo, here is what you need to do.
You need to have fastboot working to do this.
1. Get the OTA zip file from you device. Is should be located somewhere on the SD card.
2. Unzip the file using 7-zip or some other zip tool that ignore the signature on the file, windows built-in zip will not work.
3. Inside the file you will find a file called "firmware.zip", copy this file to the directory where you have fastboot installed.
4. Download this hboot file:
http://www.multiupload.com/8BI4CWZWMU the MD5SUM is: 6812365feef394e2d1e3c1cd5ab67d24
CHECK the md5sum before proceeding
Copy this file to where you have fastboot installed.
5. boot to fastboot mode and run the following:
Code:
fastboot flash hboot hboot-6.11.1111.nb0
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
fastboot reboot
You should then reboot into Honeycomb.
If you continue to encounter the white screen or otherwise cannot boot, then go to the easy upgrade thread in the development forum, download and flash the "light" version appropriate for your device from post 1.
You should then boot to recovery. Post a message here and wait for assistance.
If this information makes you unsure of whether or not to take the upgrade, that's fine. Please do yourself an everyone else like you a service, when presented with the option to upgrade "Select the download and install later" option and upload the downloaded OTA zip file somewhere where I can get it.
Works !
Just to confirm that OTA from s-off indeed caused white HTC screen (probably due to incompatability of s-off old version of hboot which remained on machine and recovery).
But solution in post 1 worked. Now on HC with new hboot s-off (but w/o CWM...).
Thanks.http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Just want to say thanks
This is my first post in the XDA forums. I don't even know if I am putting this in the correct section. Just want to say thank you for enabling me to make a seamless transition to honeycomb and making it a thing of beauty. I would have done this earlier but I couldn't find the donate button and then once I did I forgot I didn't have enough posts to post this into the developer section. So it is quite evident that if a complete NOOB like me can do this the process couldn't have been made any easier. Once again thank you. A couple of beers on the way (I think that's the correct term lol)

Need help stuck on white screen with s-off
Okay, I need assistance please. I bought a Flyer on the Marketplace and gave it to my Mom as a gift, I ran the RUU to go back to stock. I carelessly did not check that the device had s-off Revolitionary and tried to install the HC update. Now I am stuck on the white screen. I have ADB on my pc, I have used it many times. If I cannot boot past the white screen how can I extract the Firmware from my sd card? I checked the developement thread mentioned above and this is one of the steps. I currently do not have a copy of the OTA on my pc. I have the US wifi version of the Flyer from Best Buy.
I tried to run the GB RUU but since my device won't boot past the white screen the pc does not see the device when attempting to run the RUU.
I really need to get this back up and running for my Mom, she loves it and is pretty upset that it is unusable currently.
I am trying not to panic, can anyone help me?
you have come to the right place. Standby for a little and I'm sure Globaltron can fix you up. He's seen this a hundred times. Just be patient. He's in Europe so may already be asleep.
In the meantime if you know how to get into fastboot from the white screen, put the Flyer into fastboot and try executing the RUU again.

Thanks, I feel like an idiot noob, I should've read all of Globatron's warnings before being too quick to update to HC I was careless. I don't use the Flyer so I don't check here often, now I wish I had.
Brilliant idea about trying to run the RUU from Fastboot, I was thinking about trying that. Thanks!
edit; update, I tried running the RUU from fastboot, I am below 30% battery, I will let it charge and try later.

This is bad. You may be bricked. Might want to talk to the people in #thunderbolt irc.
The RUU you used, was it an exe or zip file. If it's a zip did you put it on the root of the SD card and rename it pg05img and then flash it in hboot? That's how i fixed mine.

This you? Haha...
Thank you for telling me that I have to rename it to PG05IMG before using Hboot to flash. I didn't know that. I've rooted 4/5 phones manually using adb and fastboot. I have a complicated problem that may not have a solution. Suggestions like, "Is your battery charged? / Did you turn your phone on with down button and power button? / Did you rename the Stock RUU correctly?" are not helpful in this situation.
Suggestions like talking to the IRC guys like Adry, Jcase, Scotty and the like is solid advice. Unfortunately, they think it appears to be a lost cause. I am merely exploring other alternatives by asking an fairly open ended question.
Bottom line, thanks for your 'help', now please move along.

Not trolling, just pointing out the obvious. And "useful" includes keeping threads respectful and on track in my opinion which, in this situation, is the one that matters. There is no room here for debate or attempts at witty replies. If you have a problem with my moderation then PM me and we can take it from there. Otherwise, please review my previous advice.
ok im just trying to help so dont bite my head off but im not sure but if you could use the revolutionary tool in hboot and get S-OFF then you could try reflashing a older hboot and i would even try reflashing the radio while your in bootloader since its the only thing you can get into
Also i would download from somewhere else the RUU and flash it again through HBOOT this video shows
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE8BiIFUOpk
If that dont work try this
http://revolutionary.io/
plus i found this but dont know if it would help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1293180.html
resolved?
Old thread I happened to stumble across...
Bootloops are almost always are kernel related.
My advice:
1) see if football hasn't got an official RUU.. RUU reset may work on its own and would be the simplest solution.
2) if no, open up the last known good working Rom or RUU you had before this soft brick.
Steal the boot.img out of the zip file; reflash boot.img from this (stolen file) through fastboot.
Also, if needed, prep by unlocking the bootloader through fastboot (unlock.bin from htcdev).
If you happen to have been using a2sd, d2sd or some other method to allow data or cache to be written to your SD, this also could be caused by /sdext (not communicating with kernel).
Solution for that is fairly simple:
Pull SD card and reformat the /ext partition(s) via a SD reader/writer.
Doesn't seem like the worst case I've seen, but I know not having your phone work can frustrate anyone. Hope that helps.
Rob
Novice to rooting here. Have a BBY 16GB FLYER. Tired of waiting for HTC OTA update. Can anyone give some pointers as how to safely update the FLYER to HC with the download(s) from the forum? Do you have to root the device in order to put HC on?
Have read the Globotron thread but someone says there are couple of steps missing which are not obvious to novice user like me.
Thanks very much!
I have the BB Wifi now running Globaltron's rooted OTA HC. There is nothing missing in his instructions, just follow careful, do not skip anything and yes you have to root. Then install the version from his tread.
IF you are on the stock Flyer ROM, start here in his instructions.
"Run revolutionary, there is no reason to install ClockWorkMod recovery at this point, say no when asked."
WARNING, MAKE SURE YOU READ AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ESPECIALLY THOSE WARNINGS IN RED LIKE " MAKE SURE YOUR DEVICE IS FULLY CHARGED"
you have to root for bc. this is very easy to do. first you have to unlock to get s-off, with revolutionary. don't need to install cwm.
essentially you download the HTC drivers and install. run the revolutionary program. you have s-off. then follow globatrons directions. easiest way for novice imho is to download the big file. rename it like instructed and place on your SD card. boot into hboot and it will take care of the rest. just follow the directions. did it like this on two best buy flyers and it works great. wish I could have hc on my view.
I do not think there are any missing steps. Just take your time and read. All the threads needed are in development. first s-off using revolutionary, Then follow steps in globatrons thread
Thanks guys for the replies. With Globatrons thread, should anything goes wrong, can I backout or have other options? Will I brick the flyer? Thanks -
have the stock RUU for your device saved to your pc first. You will need this to revert or in the case of problems.
How do I do that?

I can't make it any easier than it is, but in my experience people who ask the last question are 5-10 times more likely to brick a device than those who don't because they are the very people don't read instructions properly and don't understand what the procedure is doing properly.

I've been trying at least to follow the threads here and the Android development subforum since I bought my Flyer the day BB dropped the price to $300. I thought there was no RUU for the US wifi version? That's all that has been keeping me from Globaltron's HC since S-off and root were so simple and his packaged up ROM seemed so straight forward. So is there a RUU for the BB US Wifi Flyer?

Not yet, you can use my version now and I'll update it with all of the regional versions as and when they are released and you will have an option to flash the US version of it when released or to revert to stock and take the stock update.

Yeah, go figure but this is based on my experience.
coming from a galaxy s device prior which used odin utility and was a world of one click solutions switching to a HTC device had a learning curve. I read everything multiple times first. Then crazy me, I did some trail runs to teach myself the basics of adb and fastboot commands as they were not commonly needed in my previous android use. Once I had a grasp of what worked where, and what commands were for what I read everything again. Then I moved forward.
Amazingly enough I have had no issues moving to and from Honeycomb and Gingerbread. Couple soft brick/boot loops allong the way but that was only becasue I was messing around with tweaking things.
Read 3 times, flash 1 time
Just trying to get the questions out of the way should I decided to continue.
Regarding running revolutionary:
Step 4: Turn USB debugging ON (Where do you turn this on?)
Note: The device should be fully booted to android now, do not go to the bootloader or fastboot. (Do you connect your device and turn it on, and when do you do so? Or is it a normal turn on or some sort of 'safe mode' you bootup differently? )
Step 5: Connect the device via USB if not already done. (If you take this step, do you connect it when it is off or on?)
Thanks!
Regarding running revolutionary:
Step 4: Turn USB debugging ON (Where do you turn this on?)
Probably should slow down if you have to ask this but it can be found under settings/applications/development. While you are at it you should disable fastboot under settings/power

Your thinking too much here. Your Flyer is on and booted up. Just plug usb in.
Step 5: Connect the device via USB if not already done. (If you take this step, do you connect it when it is off or on?)
Cant believe you asked this after your last question, once again, device on then plug in USB.
Revolutionary is going to locate your device and give you your id. you enter it into the website and you get the beta key. You enter the beta key into revolutionary and hit enter. Do you want Clockwork Recovery, select Y or N hit enter. It does the rest

I've looked through the forums, but it was never truly simple. Recently, I tried to root my HTC Rezound, now, it has no service. How can I recover to a defulat/facory image as if it came out of the box? Please talk in simple words, I do not know what S-off/S-on or anything else is I've read about.

If your still locked and haven't ran the leaked ICS RUU, then just grab the most recent OTA RUU which is 2.01xxxxxx and while the phone is connected to usb and in fastbootusb run the program. Or in other words.. pull battery , reinsert battery . connect to usb then hold volume down while pressing power to load straight into the bootloader . Now you should see fastboot in white letters with a blue background. Press power once and now it should say Fastbootusb in white letters with a red background. Now, simply run the downloaded RUU exe. and it will ask you some prompts and reinstall the ota as it was out of the box.
if you happen to have ran the leaked ICS RUU, then you can't go backwords until you would S-off.
There is a sticky , I think in the developement section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338916 search through this thread for the most recent RUU.. it is the 2.01.605.11. Some of the links maybe dead , but search through the thread people have put mirrors up . The ones from Goo me . .seem to work the best.
I'm probably still to new to be of any help but
did you unlock the phone? =)
probably best you keep on what you started, you wanted to try root, so continue cause i'm surely betting once you unlock, root, custom recovery and flash a rom the issues would disappear.
S-off/S-on as I've recently learned (or so I think) is breaking the security layer provided by HTC once you unlock a bootloader, it's a risky and (to me) complicated process that you would surely remember trying.

Similar thing happened to me. I have hboot 1.15. I relocked the the phone ran the RUU. Phone booted up normal with the everything stock. I then took the OTA and when it rebooted it was updating then it rebooted and the phone never turned on again. I sent it to HTC for warranty. They will get it tuesday. I'll see how this goes.

You're getting this error because you're trying to flash an older RUU on the phone than what's already on there. You'll need to flash the same RUU version or higher. If you took the latest OTA update, there may not be one available yet. I'd suggest you go through the HTCDev unlock again until that RUU makes it to the internet.

Hi there jrgalioto. Can you do me a favor, and boot into your bootloader for me? I'd like you to check the green text.
What Radio version does it say you have?
Also, if you can connect the phone up to your computer and run the fastboot command (in FASTBOOT USB mode):
Code:
fastboot getvar mainver
What number comes back? (If you can't run the command, don't worry about it)
---
If I might ask, why did you relock the phone?
---
I'm looking into trying to get you a link to a current RUU. One has been posted, but I can't access it because of Filefactory's restrictions. Hopefully somebody will post a mirror to the download soon.

I relocked because I needed to bring it back to Sprint for service, so I needed to unroot it, because I wasn't receiving data to it. But I got it figured out now. I was able to unlock the bootloader again and my recovery was still there. So i reflashed a custom ROM, so I at least had something on my phone. When I called Sprint, I told them it was not a phone issue, they updated my username in the system, then I was able to ##72786# to get the hands free activation to complete without error 1012. So I am now back in business. However, If I ever do have to unroot again, I will be in the same boat.

For future ref...sprints tep policy covers rooted phones
Of course the first variable that could be the issue in any given situation is the fact that a phone is rooted

That was the 1st thought I had. What if the root is causing the issue. It, however was not the case. and all is now right with the world, and I am no longer a brick...for now...

Hey I try to help and I have even written a guide with a ton of info, I even went so far as to write down troubleshooting stuff and they still post the exact same stuff over and over, some times its a bit frustrating. I even gave instructions on what they need to do should they completely ruin the file tree, when have you seen anyone completely destroy the internal memory lol

Any luck on the mirror for the new RUU download? I'm using the latest one I can find and I am stuck and can't get my phone to reboot, shutdown or anything. I can't run fastboot either. all I see is ***Tampered*** unlocked*** ....RUU update fail!
My phone won't respond to the volume down and power button either.
any suggestions?
Long story short. Flashed a ROM in EXT4. Something went wrong and I screwed up my partitions. Cant get anything to load. Was directed to flash the RUU in fastboot.
Problem is, I cant figure out how and YES, I looked at the guide. I"m either a dumbass or really cant read. Where do I put the RUU zip? One I get into bootloader how do I run fastboot in usb mode and have it find the RUU zip....
What shall I name the RUU.
Any responses would be most helpful. I need the phone for work tomorrow
Rename RUU to PH85IMG and put it on the root of external sd card (not in any folders). Pull battery, replace, and hold volume down while powering on device. When it asks of you want to update select yes, then let it sit for awhile. It will reboot a couple of times while it does it's thing. When it's done reboot phone and you should be all good

Trying it now, will let you know how I fare. Thank yo for the prompt reply.
Hope it works
Edit: Do I have to re-add 4EXT etc to flash ROMS or should it still be there?
If you did read then you would have figured everything out for yourself. People claim they read but comprehension is a big factor as well.
To answer your question... Flashing an RUU is like turning the phone back to stock. Depending if you're s-off then you will need to unlock and reflash a recovery.

Dude...who the EFF are you saying If I did read I would have figured it out. The guide I read from the Amaze bible didn't lay it out as it was in an earlier reply to the thread.
Apparently everyone isn't as wise as you are or doesn't "comprehend" as well as you do. Sorry I asked a question on a forum made for...wait for it...ASKING questions. People like you are the ones that make folks give up and say fvck it.
The question was answered, I appropriately thanked the person, no need for your .02 thanks anyway.

All information is definitely in the bible, maybe it can be cleared up a bit, but in your case, if you control+f(for find) and typed RUU, the 5th of 6 times it appears in the document would have shown you the answer.
You could look at threads by our mod, he has posted that this is NOT a place just for people to find answers.. and I don't really mind helping people find answers.. but it IS clearly explained in the bible.
This is just to squash any debate over people's reading ability- the answers are ALWAYS there, and I and a few others did our best to reduce how much time is spent searching.. if you want to contribute to the bible, you can always do so in that thread.
I went ahead and changed the link in section 2 to read "12. How to flash firmware/custom bootloaders - this is how you flash a RUU" just to make it easier to find.
