1. Not sure whether you need to relock the bootloader or not.
2. Run the RUU
3. If you locked the bootloader, re-unlock it, flash Amon RA
4. Amon Ra has a menu option to re-root the phone.

Definately need to relock to run the RUU, and I think you need to be on stock recovery for it to work as well. There is a thread that explains how to get back to rooted stock search the development thread or this one. It was popular when the OTA came up . Sorry I have no idea how to post links or I would.
ok thanks. If someone could post a link, it would be very helpful.....thanks guys
First of all, you really should use the search function. This has been gone over in many, many threads already. From what people have posted in response to you you really could have searched RUU and found an answer I'm sure. You could also search "ICS Stock" and come up with a thread. I say all this because people keep posting new threads without doing research and it is cluttering up the board and is getting frustrating. Also, you learn a lot more about this stuff if you read up about it.
That being said... follow the link and info in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22660531&postcount=12
You also need to have HTC Sync installed on your computer and put the phone in fastboot. You don't need to flash stock recovery first. Also, when you relock your phone will say SECURITY WARNING in pink where it says RELOCKED. You can ignore that. Make sure you back up anything and everything you want to save as this will really wipe your phone for reals.
If you get any mainver errors search for the Awesome Recovery Tool in the dev section which should help you automate any mainver work arounds you may need.

Sorry. Geesh I did search but I guess I wasn't using the correct words to get the help I was looking for. That's why I posted the thread. I was going to sell the phone that's why I was putting it back stock the root is fine. But that looks pretty complicated so maybe I can sell it the way it is.

Well, as I mentioned above, it's getting frustrating with all the threads asking the same thing.
Anyway, it's actually really easy. I did it over the weekend because I wanted to start with a clean slate. Just download the RUU, make sure you have HTC Sync installed but not running, put phone in fastboot, relock phone, double click on RUU. It will do it's thing and then you're done. It takes about 15 minutes or so for the RUU to run.
Otoh, someone might like the fact that there's ICS on it so you may get some nice bids on it if you put it up on eBay.

Except that's the outdated RUU. Use the one in my linked post above.
If I am running cleanrom GBE, will these steps take me back to stock as well?
What I am supposed to do:
Download latest RUU
Flash stock recovery (put on root of sd card, and flash in recovery)
relock in fastboot (is that thru adb?) (fastboot oem lock)
run RUU (this is where I am confused, how do I run it? Like flash it?
then I should be bone stock?
If I wanted to root, I would flash amon ra
Install SU to root.
Miss anything?
Sorry, its a little different than modding samsung devices.
Thanks for you help and pateince
Heather
Yes, but you actually don't need to flash stock recovery first. To run the RUU just double click on the RUU file. It will open up a window and there is a ReadMe (or something similar) button. Click that and read it for more info on what to expect when running it.
Before you run it make sure you have HTC Sync on your pc. It shouldn't be running, just needs to be there.
Also, follow the linked post in my post above for latest version that has a working download link if you don't already have it.
And make sure you have backed up anything and everything you need because this really will wipe your internal sd card. I would back up your external sd card too for good measure. Can't be too safe.
I'm a noob in terms of the HTC rooting process.. Very familiar with the Moto Droid series, so different terms, I guess. Can you explain why the HTC Sync has to be installed, but not running? I've already unlocked my Rezound, after the OTA, and am running CleanROM 3.1. I actually had HTC Sync installed at first, but instead of disabling it, I uninstalled it. It worked like a charm with HTC Sync uninstalled. Maybe I'm an idiot and it's a whole different issue. Like I said, I'm a noob. Just wanted to see why it worked that way from someone who seemed like they would know.
It's to get the HTC drivers for the phone onto you computer.

I find it hard to believe that there is no step-by-step out there, so I'm just going to assume that I'm really bad at internet searching and apologize for posting a question that surely must be answered somewhere out there...
I ultimately want to try out the newest ICS leak (depending on whether Flash works on it?), but it seems that the best first step is to get S-Off on my rooted, stock Gingerbread Rezound.
But I can't find a simple step-by-step instruction set anywhere... Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I downloaded a toolkit from hasoon2000 that's supposed to make things easy, but I don't know what to do with it.
hasoon2000 links to instructions that only show a video and assume I know how to use something called Juopunutbear(?).
It seems that every tidbit of information I can find is only partial...
Where can I find a step-by-step, beginning-to-end guide to get S-Off for a rooted Rezound? Am I missing something?
Prerequisites
- Must be on a stock Gingerbread ROM OR The 3.14.605.5 ICS Leak <---- NO OTHER ICS LEAKS BUT THIS ONE!
- Must be HTCDev unlocked
- Must be rooted
1. Install HTC Drivers
2. Go to www.HTCDev.com
2a. Follow instructions and unlock your bootloader/Device.
2b. flash a rooted rom/gain root access
3. Get a fresh microSD card or backup yours because s-off will delete everything on it.
4. After unlocking run the toolkit which will push you through s-off(Juno-w/e)
4a. Get a length of insulated wire about 8 or so inches, then when the Toolkit cmd prompt says to, ground it outThe pins you touch are in this picture.
5. If it worked, you'll be s-off'd, install a recovery & rom.
If still confused just ask, I'll try my best to walk you through it.

When we speak of this "leak" for the rezound that means that we took ics 4.0 from another phone and ported it over.. so what is the leak vs porting it. When rezoind does finally get our 4.0 update , what perks will that bring us even though we have the "leak" or "port" ...we will be able to have aosp roms right

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the leaks are not ported and they ARE for the Rezound. When the ota comes, I don't think it will be much different from what we have now (3.14.605.10).
I believe the source will have to be dropped for AOSP.

The Rezound is getting Sense 3.6 with it's OTA update, the newer HTC ICS based phones are getting Sense 4.0.
The leaks are Sense 3.6 builds specific for the Rezound, the ports are Sense 4.0 based roms for other phones made to work on the Rezound.
So what exactly is the benefit to S-OFF? I tried to do it, but bricked my rezound. Luckily, Verizon exchanged it as DOA, and so I'm all good for now.

Easier flashing (don't have to create a ph98img.zip file any more) edit boot screen (my favorite reason) and be able to flash between different firmwares (this is a big deal).
Hmmm. Well, I've done all that with S-ON. I've got a custom ROM, custom recovery, custom boot animation (a JB one posted somewhere on this site), and the ICS leaked firmware. I don't remember using PH98IMG.ZIP (rather it was other zips), though I was pretty excited to play with a new phone, so I could be forgetting. Actually, now that I'm thinking more on it, I did flash the PH98IMG.ZIP when I put CleanROM on the phone, and so I suppose that also put the updated firmware on it.

The ability to do Nandroid restores and have it flash the boot.img without needing any help scripts or doing it manually via fastboot was my main reason for doing it..

By "edit boot screen" he meant the splash screen before the boot animation (the blindingly bright white HTC screen). This can't be changed without having S-OFF.
The PH98IMG.zip you flashed with CleanROM was to update the kernel, not your firmware. Since you are S-ON, it won't install the boot.img in recovery during the ROM flash, so it uses a separate file to flash it in the bootloader. Otherwise, no boot.img = phone isn't booting (obviously).

I used the control bear s off tool tonight, after many, many...many times I finally got s-off. But now the only thing I have is the modified boot loader. I tried too use adb to push recovery and boot images and it would say success, but would actually never boot into them, it would just stay on the white and green HTC screen. Any help is appreciated of course, I just need to get booted up.

IMHO...no need to unlock it, so keep it locked.

Fortunately, I'm starting with a rooted Rezound already.
3. Blank microSD is no problem.
4. I don't know what "run the toolkit" means... or what "Juno" means. The top middle button of the toolkit I downloaded just refers me to webpages with confusing instructions and a broken video link (found the video elsewhere). I don't know which toolkit button I'm supposed to push, and nothing tells me which one helps me get S-Off. So... This is where I'm stuck.

I'm sure the correct info is at that link, but there's so much information... And it seems like everyone refers to the same things by different names? ... JuopunutBear? ControlBear? But I'm not sure? It just isn't written for people who don't understand this stuff...

ON the toolkit...isn't there a "Run Juopunutbear V.6If....." in the left hand box? Run the one that corresponds to the firmware you have. You have GB so run the first one. Make sure you have read and know how to do the wire trick.
JuopunutBear is the name of the group that developed the s-off process...ControlBear is the name of the program file that is run to achieve it. Hansoons tool apparently downloads the programs you need to do everything. Follow the steps.
If you don't understand the terms bootloader, hboot, recovery..Read up on them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641670
Don't worry about flashing a new hboot, just keep the one you have when you're done.
Also, I found it helpful to have a computer that could read the SD card. Just in case you need to download something to it for you phone.
Thanks for the update... So here are the simple instructions I'm following now:
1. - 2. Root device.
3. Backup microSD.
4. Select "Run Juopunutbear v.6 If You Are On Gingerbread" in Hasoon2000's S-Off toolkit, then click Run
5. Use insulated wire to connect Pin 1 and GND for two seconds when cmd prompt says "Do wire-trick now!! Look instructions at web"
... So what happens next? Does my device reboot as usual? Do I have to re-unlock? Re-root? Re-install amon recovery? In other words... Did it change anything other than giving me S-Off and wiping the microSD card?

Getting there.
The wire trick..DON'T touch the contacts for 2 seconds. Touch them TWICE in 1.75 seconds. Example...touch..1.75s......touch.... Hold the wire firmly down in the hole to insure contact and just touch the gnd twice.
AFter, you do have to reinstall amon recovery...DON"T UNLOCK... no reason to. Again, it is a good backup to have a SD card reader available.
EDIT: If you want to be able to use fastboot commands after, then you do need to flash the Joupunut Hboot that is offered to you at the end of the process. I didn't. I just find flashable files for my needs.
okay, first I did the wire trick and got my phone to s-off then noticed it was locked so I went through the unlocking using htcdev run through which should mean my phone is rooted and s-off, correct?
second, what is this whole thing with the MD5 thing...I went through pages and pages and it didn't say specifically where the MD5 was needed to be use. sorry, if I sound like an idiot for asking that question...my brain is fried from this whole process of s-off then had to unlock.
third, and lastly...I can't for the life of me update to one of the new roms like Business_ICS4.0.3_Sense4.0-v2.6, I thought after you s-off that you only had to rename it to PH98IMG and let it automatically load at the bootloader screen, it would go through process with the bar on the right hand of the screen filling up but once it was done it just stayed on bootloader screen...the only one rom that worked for me was the Global RUU4.03.605.2 from [ROM][08.20.12] Simplistic 3.0 [ICS Sense Global 3.6 - 4.03.605.2]....none of the others worked
thanks for any help you guys can give me

Do not rename it. Just put it on your sdcard2 and flash in recovery. Factory reset and wipe cache first in recovery.
Will not install in bootloader that is ror kernels and ruu's etc. Not ROMs

1. When you have s-off on the top it should say "locked" because s-off > unlock. i would leave it locked.
2. MD5 is a number generated when a zip is made. when you download something off the internet, it has the ability to mess up and download incorrectly. The reason why people say to check the MD5 because certain stuff can brick your phone if it is incorrect. to check you can use a bunch of different programs on or off your phone. just search google for it.
3. Let me explain root vs s-off:
Root, well it is what it sounds like. Root means you will have root access to the lowest part of the system partition. Meaning you have the ability to rewrite the system OS like flashing different roms and themes or even installing apps to the system partition. (you dont need s-off to obtain root. just an unlocked boot loader that will let you get to that level.)
s-off, the "S" stands for security. The difference between S-on and S-off is that the bootloader is 100% open. This means you can not only gain root but you can change the inner core workings of the device. Kernels, recovery, bootloader, splash screens, and radios. Stuff that can brick your phone instantaneously, stuff that the manufacturer doesnt want you touching because they dont want to offer a free phone if you do end up bricking it.
3.1 when flashing a rom you always do it in recovery, unless you are returning the phone to stock then you would use an RUU
now this isnt a scare tactic, this is a learning process. Just be careful in what you put on your device and dont rush, take your time when it comes to modifying you phone. Always check the MD5 sums on things that you want to try, and ALWAYS read as much as you can on what you are about to do.
I see, the problem I've having now is when I go into to recovery and let it load it show harddrive icon and green loading but then a black phone icon pops up with a red triangle(exclamation in the middle)

Clearly you haven't read up enough on what to do before messing with this phone. I recommend Scotty's noob guide. I think it's the best that you can find. You went s-off without figuring out that you need a recovery? One of the best pieces of advice I've ever gotten (for this particular process) is to read, read, read. It's not a joke. You sound like you are in over your head. I'm not trying to flame, but a few hours spent reading about this online would have cleared up a lot of your questions.
Agreed. He is correct about the reading. And read a lot. Read everything in the stickies and everything not in the stickies. Also read everything that is not a Rom thread. Then after all that reading , you can read the roms. Scott noob guide is good place to start I think also.

Similar thing happened to me. I have hboot 1.15. I relocked the the phone ran the RUU. Phone booted up normal with the everything stock. I then took the OTA and when it rebooted it was updating then it rebooted and the phone never turned on again. I sent it to HTC for warranty. They will get it tuesday. I'll see how this goes.

You're getting this error because you're trying to flash an older RUU on the phone than what's already on there. You'll need to flash the same RUU version or higher. If you took the latest OTA update, there may not be one available yet. I'd suggest you go through the HTCDev unlock again until that RUU makes it to the internet.

Hi there jrgalioto. Can you do me a favor, and boot into your bootloader for me? I'd like you to check the green text.
What Radio version does it say you have?
Also, if you can connect the phone up to your computer and run the fastboot command (in FASTBOOT USB mode):
Code:
fastboot getvar mainver
What number comes back? (If you can't run the command, don't worry about it)
---
If I might ask, why did you relock the phone?
---
I'm looking into trying to get you a link to a current RUU. One has been posted, but I can't access it because of Filefactory's restrictions. Hopefully somebody will post a mirror to the download soon.

I relocked because I needed to bring it back to Sprint for service, so I needed to unroot it, because I wasn't receiving data to it. But I got it figured out now. I was able to unlock the bootloader again and my recovery was still there. So i reflashed a custom ROM, so I at least had something on my phone. When I called Sprint, I told them it was not a phone issue, they updated my username in the system, then I was able to ##72786# to get the hands free activation to complete without error 1012. So I am now back in business. However, If I ever do have to unroot again, I will be in the same boat.

For future ref...sprints tep policy covers rooted phones
Of course the first variable that could be the issue in any given situation is the fact that a phone is rooted

That was the 1st thought I had. What if the root is causing the issue. It, however was not the case. and all is now right with the world, and I am no longer a brick...for now...

Hey I try to help and I have even written a guide with a ton of info, I even went so far as to write down troubleshooting stuff and they still post the exact same stuff over and over, some times its a bit frustrating. I even gave instructions on what they need to do should they completely ruin the file tree, when have you seen anyone completely destroy the internal memory lol

Any luck on the mirror for the new RUU download? I'm using the latest one I can find and I am stuck and can't get my phone to reboot, shutdown or anything. I can't run fastboot either. all I see is ***Tampered*** unlocked*** ....RUU update fail!
My phone won't respond to the volume down and power button either.
any suggestions?
hey,
I bought HTC amaze 4g in Lahore, Pakistan. When I bought it, it was locked with S-ON and gingerbread v2.3.4 running on it. I waited for few days so i can get an ICS update through OTA but it never happened and there were slim chances that it would happen. Since i bought it here in Pakistan so there was no carrier attached to my phone so my stock ROM is not made for any specific carrier.
Now i have unlocked the phone (HTC BOOTLOADER METHOD) and then rooted my phone as well. So far its working fine with the stock ROM and everything. Now i want to update my amaze to ICS. i have read so much and tried to find some suitable way to achieve this but failed.
Can anyone guide me through this whole procedure with same case scenario as mine?? I have been sitting infront of the laptop for like 2 consecutive days and i have almost lost all hope to see my amaze running ICS ... so if anyone can help me out with this regard i would be very thankful ...

There's no unbranded RUU for the Amaze, so there isn't really any ICS update for you. The only thing you'll have to do is pick the T-Mobile ICS RUU and go on from there.

Thanks alot for your reply. But that is exactly what i want to do and being not able to do ...
Actually let me put my case more appropriately.
1. I want to update my phone to ICS but then again don't want to loose my warranty (which right now is lost as the phone is un locked and rooted). So before going to update my OS i would like to make sure i can un-lock/lock and root/un-root it? un-lock and rooting part is done now its the reverse mechanism i am seeking help with. No custom or stock rom has been flashed on my bootloader so far.
i have CWM recovery installed on my phone i have made a backup of my phone through it, which i saved on my pc as well as the phone storage now that would be my stock roms image please correct me if i am wrong?
2. And then in the second step i would like to update my os to ICS for that reason i had visited this thread
[Collection] HTC Ruby/Amaze 4G Stock ROMs (RUUs & OTAs)
Thread By: krook6023
and from here i can download the RUU you are talking about right? But wouldn't the software build or kernel version difference make it un successful updation?
if not then i will download one of those RUU's but guide me through with the next steps actually required to update it currently the phone is Un-locked, rooted and S-ON.
I know i am being too naive about things but this is my first android device and i really don't want to mess it up but that doesn't mean i haven't done research i have been reading stuff but as long as i don't get it done once by my hand i think i wont be comfortable doing it, hence require guidance.
Thanks in advance.

put the RUU into the root of the sdcard, it must be named PH85IMG.zip to be detected so rename it if it isnt.
turn off fastboot if its on (find it yourself) power off the phone and then power it on by holding pwr and down on the volume key
OR turn off the phone and then pull the battery, replace and power on using pwr and volume down. Then you will see the menu and choose fastboot it will check the RUU and take a long time then it will say press a key to flash the update, do it. wait a while. even if it seems to take a while dont pull the battery. when the phone boots do the setup and then in google market get ES file explorer and use it to rename the PH85IMG.zip to PH85IMG_1.zip or something so it wont detect it and start the long RUU check if you just want to get into the recovery.
I leave the RUU on my sd card just renamed cause ive had some funny problems and this can save your ass
hope this helped,

Thanks alot for your reply. Your reply seems to be about the second part of my question which was to update the OS to ICS. But before flashing the new rom i would like to know the steps required for the first part of my question so i can safely revert back to my original stock rom if something bad happens... Just playing safe you know....
If you can help me in that regard as well that would be wonderfull...

Hey,
Well i can help you with unlocking bootloader but i haven't done S-Off mine is still S-On. For unlocking your bootloader i am attaching this word file for you which contains all the steps that are required to unlock your bootloader.
And yes everything on your phones internal memory get wiped once you unlock the and reboot your phone. But things stored on the external memory wont be touched they will stay intact. So before unlocking do make a backup of all your applications and store it on your pc and later on put it back on your sd card and download the recovery software you used before to make backup to do restore this time... Hope that would help you.
Isnt your method for 2.3.6? This guy has ics. I have the same tmobile one I simply used hasoon tool to unlock bootloader install recovery and root. Havent done s=off yet. I dont see the point of s=off and supercid yet. Still confused as to if I need them or not

Hi,
Well with regard to just unlocking bootloader the method i sent him would work just fine whether it is ICS or GG. But to install recovery and rooting you need extra steps which he didn't asked for and yes you can do that with the hasoon all in one tool kit.
Can you tell me how you got s-off is wire trick the only way? If so youtube is blocked how can I get that video

Well daniyal i haven't done S-Off yet as i wrote in my previous posts and what i have read in the articles and discussions its a little cumbersome method to achieve that since i haven't done it myself. For youtube part if you want to use youtube you can download and use hotspot shield. Just download it and connect it and it will allow you to use youtube. I hope this helps you.
Also studying in Pakistan and a question does your phone have tmobile logo? If so then do the ph85img method mentioned earlier (don't worry it won't mess up your device) and you don't really need to s-off if you use 4ext recovery which is the best imo. Right now I am on vacation (back in us) but I come back first week of january if you still can't figure this out or feel too scared just call me up (I will pm you my number) and I can walk you through it on the phone quite simple (and if you want to s-off and I can help you with that too) would do it personally if you were in karachi...

Well this is great to have some to talk to in person. It would be doubly great if you could help out with the original questions i posted in the start of my thread. Thanks.
If you want to update it to ICS, most likely, you will have to S-Off it, as there are probably no RUUs that will work with your phone's CID.
It would be helpful if you told us what your CID was. To obtain the CID code from your phone, use the included attachment, extract it to an accessible location, and then boot your phone in FASTBOOT mode, not the BOOTLOADER mode. After you boot in there, plug in the USB cable to the computer.
After you've done that, double click on the file, CID.bat
Let the command run, and then go in the folder where you extracted the files to, and there should be a file called CIDNUMBER.log. Copy the result and then post it here.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there is a RUU you can use with that CID.
It *IS* possible to have the phone update to ICS, but what is *NOT* possible (as of now, because of no RUU for your CID), is to have the phone downgrade back to GB if you need it for warranty purposes. In this scenario, it's an one way street.
You have 2 options really, to leave your phone as is, or to S-OFF the phone in order to update the phone to ICS.

In either case to update to ICS or to get the locked (not relocked) status back with S-on for warranty purposes i need to do S-off isn't that right?
Well for now my amaze is unlocked and rooted so warranty is out of the window and i cant get it back to locked status it always says relocked so i would like to move forward and then with the help of guys like you i would like to get back to original stock if possible.
so whats the next step for me to get my phone to ICS? If i have to do S-off whats the easiest way of achieving it and after achieving it what are the next steps to perform upgradation?
I have a question. I have s-on and rooted my phone and installed twrp while having unlocked bootloader. I want to install 4ext as someone told me thats better on here. Do i have to uninstall twrp or I can just use hansoon tool to install 4ext and it will over right twrp?
