GPS seems to be working while driving - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi, a member of a Dutch forum has tested his Prime's GPS while driving. He said the GPS was locked within 30 seconds and was locked the complete time.

Good news!

Would be nice to get more of these reports since I am guessing tethering your phone to the prime would produce the same results wouldn't it?

Its a start i suppose, but nothing to brag about (90 ft accuracy) . With my year old DInc,in under a minute i have 10 sats and accurate to 20ft. And thats indoors by a window.

I see...so this thread represents the power of positive thinking.
Other threads have numerous (erroneous) reports of gps working properly...but in reality gps was not working properly. I hope this is true...HOPE.

I don't think you can compare those accuracies like that. He's driving at 120km/h while you were standing still.

You shouldn't. You can save a piece of Maps, I'm not sure how, but it should be possible so you can stay offline while testing.

Imho you should. Google maps be damned, damn 3G hipster navigator.
Go oldschool with offline maps, safest way to go.

Why would you buy a tablet for gps navigation in your car? My phone has very good GPS and has never failed me. But if I would depend on it on a daily basis i would get a device that was made exactly for that.
The GPS in the Prime is nice to have and i'm sure it will work for most tasks like adding location to a foto and stuff like that. Or telling me we're I am while watching a map in a city.
But yeah maybe i'm strange^^ I really dont think this is a big issue and i'd like to add that my phone (DesireHD) had similar problems when i first bought it. Now there has been several radio updates and now i always get a lock in 15secs and it almost never drops unless there is a tunnel or something.
Everyone has the right to their own opinion but if you're not buying the prime because of this why did you even want it in the first place?

People always assume you have a phone with GPS in it.. call me old fashioned, but I dont.
I was looking forward to having something decent to navigate with, but Asus dropped the ball on their promises.
And I dont need it on a daily basis, that's exactly why I was looking forward to the GPS on this pad.
Its nice to have but I wouldn't buy an expensive device designed specifically for that task for it.
Basically when Asus told us GPS is useless for navigating,
it felt like they were telling me to buy a tank if I want to offroad because your new ATV cant.

You can save, at least on Nexus S. The option in settings is something like "Maps caching", enable it and then "drive" around the screen with your finger, after that those downloaded maps will be available offline

yeah use google maps to make sure it's charting your path correctly, and not thinking you're driving through trees and houses

How does one "act all weird" on the phone? Was there perhaps a video camera you saw? Webcam?
For the love of gods, it's a first-line rep, the other I spoke to one who kept telling me she didn't know what ZERO was.
I spelled it for her 5 times and she STILL got it wrong.
If you listen to morons, then, well, you have to question your sources.

again, 99% he is what, 2 weeks on the job. he was BSing you in the first place. Don't you get it, these first-line phone reps they are hired/fired NOT because they're smart, but because they have a pulse.
These guys are NOT smart, they are NOT educated (for the most part unless you consider reading the backs of twinkie wrappers an education), and they're just trying to get through as many calls as possible as QUICKLY as possible.
Don't believe everything you hear.
Did you, for example, call back and try again with someone else? Perhaps 3 or 4 times total?
I'm sure your results would be as broad as the spectrum.
So you are implying that Sprint specifically instructed all its reps to deceive its customers about an upcoming update?
Seems like too much work

No, no instructions involved, which is EXACTLY my point. They get shoddy training, so they "guess" and shine you on.
For the love of gods, you can't seriously think these guys are even informed as to what's going on.
Seriously, you think first-line reps know anything at all? Their life expectancy is what? a few months, maybe a year. These guys get training equivalent to brain donors who can't figure out why they took the job in the first place until it makes sense that they should not have because everyone is yelling at them.

Question to all Dev's

Just a thought...
Since our tbolts get way better battery life while on a wifi. Is there anyway to make an app to trick it into thinking it is sending and recieving wifi signal. And then disbale it when you really want to eb on wifi.
I'm sure there is alot more to it but its just a thought
You can't make it think it's running on wifi or running on the mobile network.

Just to explain a little, the reason for battery life is that on WiFi you have a data stream. Like a hose, when you bounce it around a lot the stream breaks, but reconnects. That is 3g/4g. It is more or less like you checking the hose to male sure you have a solid stream. If you didn't move, you would check less. There is also the matter of different hoses and different stream settings, but well stick to basics. The only way to trick it would reduce likelyhood of a solid stream. This would do more harm than good.

You might want to look at: Menu ---> Settings --> Wireless & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Enable Always-On Mobile Data (uncheck this). Unchecking this turns off 3g/4g after 5 (or 15?) minutes of non-use. This is a HUGE battery saver if your phone has a lot of standby time (like mine does). You can also set WiFi to turn off after awhile if not in use.
Honestly it was meant as a question i was not sure if it had to do with the setting itself or not. It was a theory.
I really do not understand why people can not give a straight answer yes or no with an explanation instead they would rather flex internet muscles...
Please close this thread
Sit, i believe you do not understand how the radio works, for you i would just suggest putting it into airplane mode when you aren't using the phone. Easy peasy battery saver.
Also thank you for making me lol

GPS issue Part II Solved

The answer was in front of our eyes the whole time ladies and gents and I can hardly believe ASUS let it slip past them before it was too late and they just shipped them out anyway instead of having a "real delay".
GPS signals simply cannot penetrate the all metal design of the Primes casing (also the reason for the weaker WiFi signal with your basic in home routers that your laptops and other electronics have a stronger signal strength then the prime). If you have a TomTom or a Garmin go ahead and put them in a metal box and tell me how well they work. If you look at the design of the I pad it has a plastic window and or other tablets with GPS ie Galaxy they have a plastic case this explains the eventual locks to satallites and then drops its because the signal is so weak in the first place.
I will be returning my Prime and wait for the new designs that ASUS is probably working on as I type it would have been nice if they could have let us know but it is what it is.

Then explain to me how some people's claim that their GPS does work????? I know a lot of people claim that it works perfectly and a lot of people claim that it doesn't. So who knows why it doesn't work as of now. But you would know this if your read the GPS issue thread!

Will you embrace the NFC abilities?

I'm planning on buying some pre formatted tags for around the house, car & at work.
Hell I might keep a tag in one of my light jackets.
I'll be using this a hell of a lot more than the 3D on my current EVO.
More on Android+NFC (how it works):

Looks fun. Probably useful for the car/nightstand/stroller. Will have to think about how to work it.
I'm waiting to see more of what people come up with.
This is my first android/smartphone so I'll have plenty to play with for a while.
Just looking at "Tasker" seems like I can do everything based on triggers and events. If those end up being cumbersome, NFC tags it is!
I will embrace! With open arms

I wouldn't fret, you (not the drive thru people, never give them the phone ) hold it over the reader (Most stores have them, al least in my exp (Phily/NYC) & the app will auto open for your prompts.
Mastercard, Visa & all of the others are supported.
I already have some tags in my hand right now (just got them in the mail). Once I get my LTE, I will program a few for uses. So far I have:
Car:
Turn WiFi on/off
Turn Bluetooth on/off
Open/close music app
Keychain that I should be getting:
Either personal info so I can just send it to another phone or open my fire dept app... Haven't decided yet.
Workout:
Turn media volume up/down
Open/close music app
Play a playlist (if I can)
Bike:
Turn alert volume down/up
Turn media volume up/down
Launch/kill Move
I have a few more ideas but I wont bore you with them.
Android Police has an article that shows you how to program a chip and some of the tasks you can do. I got my tags from TagsForDroid.com.
I'll be interested to see if the NFC radio uses any significant power,
and if it can be turned off.
If I'd have to turn it on every time I wanted to use it, that'd completely defeat the purpose.
Also, Google Wallet won't work on a rooted phone :-(
Right now the only card choices are *certain* Citi Mastercards, or a pre-loaded debit card. Google was doing a deal where for trying it out, they'd give you a $50 wallet credit - I'm not sure if they're still offering that, but if so it seems worth giving it a try.

Change the view of your Recents Apps List

I would like to think I'm pretty well informed. I browse the forums and did my homework before getting my G3, but yesterday I stumbled upon an article (I think it was "7 Things You Need to Know About Your G3") that showed a little trick that I hadn't seen mentioned the whole time I've been reading about the phone. When your Recents Panel is open if you pinch out slightly it will change from the small cluttered screens (I think it's 3x3) to a more zoomed in usable list (2x2) and if you pinch out even more it will go to the single column view!
I figured if I hadn't realized this yet there was bound to be a few others who didn't get the memo as well! (kind of like the hidden plastic tie-fighter on the power/volume buttons) Or if I WAS the only one then disregard my ignorance and have a nice day! :silly:

Right? Dove in deep to tweaking for awesome battery life and completely missed something so simple right in front of us!

That's what's so awesome about smart phones is you can know exactly what you're doing with it but still overlook some neat little trick like this. Glad I could help you out! Plus looks way better once you zoom it in too. Less chaotic lol

:silly:

OMG I was wondering why that changed on me, I guess I zoomed in and didn't notice. Was bugging me, thank you!

No problem, glad I could help! Honestly I was surprised that I hadn't accidentally zoomed it in too before I knew it was possible.

I guess RTFM is way out of fashion. But I still downloaded the manual and put it in my Google Books for bedtime reading.
