It appeared on all roms and kernels! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had to go back to stock rom because I couldn't stand the screen of death issue anymore. I used cm7 and miui and some other roms but the issue remained for them all. I have always done full wipes before flashing. I was last on cm7 and decided to play around with different kernels to see if this was the problem but issue remained for different kernels too. I even used kernel cleaner script but still no good. I was getting 3 sod's a day in the end so I went back to stock and took in an update through kies which removed root too. 3 day's now and no sod's. The issue is gone so why was it there? I have spent hours researching but have come up with nothing. Some get the issue most don't and no one has a fix is where it stands. Please reply if you have this issue too so I know your suffering like me lol.

Maybe it's an app you are using?

Thats a very very rare issue its either bad flashes or your phone if its on multiple roms .

I know I tried multiple versions of both cm7 and miui. What could cause the bad flashes? My clockworkmod or maybe the method I used to root in the first place?

If your using titanium backup to restore ur apps that could be ur problem. Not all the time but some roms read data differently and if you use backups to restore your phone you could be restoring with corrupt files.

[Q] CWM restore problem...

Hey
I was on GingerReal1.4, and wanted to try out overclocking on CM7. Made a backup on CWM and then installed CM7, tried, happy and decided to go back.
Now when I try to restore the backup, most of my apps arent being detected and the launcher is back to touchwiz and I can't seem to find superuser also. I assumed this maybe because sd-ext is not being detected. So I tried installing a2sd-gui from my titanium backup, that seems to work and isn't showing me any problem. I also tried reinstalling the kernel, didn't work.
And Ive tried restoring about 5 times till now, same result.
Am I doing something wrong?? Any help would be rly rly awesome...
Thanks

You mean the script given here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158197 ?
Tried that, didn't work.
Even apps that were preinstalled on the ROM like ext4manager and Gmail are missing!!!
Thanks a lot guys
Then logically the problem is in that backup.
yea, that's what I'm thinking, though I did not get any errors while doing the backup.
I read about someone else having a similar issue a long tym back in the galaxy s forum, and i dont see any suggestions or solutions there.
Anyway, given up for now, will take care of it some other tym...
Backing up all i got and switching to CM now.
Do let me know if something pop's up and you remember this issue of mine.
Thanks again
No.. The backup is not the problem. I have read somewhere that the problem lies with the bootloader.
When you upgrade to CM 7, it uses the 2.3.7 bootloader. And now you are trying to restore a backup associated with a 2.3.4 bootloader. The restore does not contain the bootloader. Thus you may experience a bootloop.
The only get around is to flash via odin.
Hit thanks if i helped.

What do you mean when you say you cant root anymore because you have CWM? Rooting and CWM are on separate tracks in this case, CWM does not stop you from rooting your phone. Are you saying you dont want to root?
Also, rooting is very simple, just change your kernel to cf-root(to be flashed via CWM, check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158197 ) and you get added advantages like ext4, BLN, a2sd support etc.
PS: Read all you can before doing anything

[Share]Found phone off, didn't reboot.

Guise, please read this carefully. I'm sharing it so you know what to do if it happens to you.
Alright, I want to share this experience with you all since it's the second time it's happened to me.
Yesterday I checked my phone and found it off in my pocket. It was the 2nd time it happened in the last few days. The first time was when I was using Jusada's ICS Final. Then these couple of days when I was using the Democracy rom (cm7.2) and now I switched to the Myth 2 and it happened again. The common thing was that with these roms I always used A2SD. Whether it was S2E or DT's A2SD. The same problem was the phone kept turning off even while charging.
Now it's to the point where I tried to reflash the rom again and it wouldn't even let me delete dalvik cache in the CWM settings. I had to format the SD in both cases this has happened to me. Seems to be a corrupt file in the Dalvik Cache or A2SD or something. Don't know how or why it happens but it's already happened twice to me already.
If this happens to you, just back up the SD, format it and reflash with Odin. It'll be fixed.
This is why backups are important. Make sure to back up all your apps weekly with Titanium so you don't have anything to worry about if this happens.
EDIT: Got saved by my Latino community. http://www.taringa.net/comunidades/...n_t-mount-_Data-Partition-Fix-LoopBoo_ts.html
Apparently the corrupted data file could be saved with a 5 package Odin flash. I was so scared :'(

Well, I'm using the last one INT2EXT+ since the data remains in the device, so it's not stored in the SD-card. Everything works just as normal (TitiniumBackup, no probs!).
edit: the OP also recommended that one for especially mid-range devices.

Yeah, the 1 package ones are basically a version update. 5 pack ones obliterate everything on the phone from scratch
I always flash the 2.3.3 4/5 package first. Then the one package 2.3.6. Root it, flash CWM. Flash custom ROM. Flash INT2EXT4+. Set up my phone. Make a titanium backup, nandroid backup. Party time

Have I completely lost my IMEI?

I'm stuck with the generic IMEI (004999010640000). I've tried a number of the various workarounds (GSII_Repair, manually deleting the /efs folder, flashing stock and trying both of those from stock, re-flashing CM10 and trying from CM10 again...) with no luck. I was actually missing files in my /efs folder before flashing stock, but even with the full /efs folder I can't find my actual IMEI. So am I screwed?

Honestly? Probably stupidity. I didn't even realize it was an issue until I noticed apps were confusing me for other users (apparently some apps identify you by IMEI). I may just see about getting a warranty replacement. It's been acting a little flaky lately anyway (a couple apps have randomly completely lost their settings). The tinkerer in me (the one that probably got me in this mess in the first place, although I'm not sure when it happened) wants to try and fix it anyway.

I guess my question is what should I be doing related to the IMEI? I've flashed to stock with Heimdall, but I don't have a backup of my original EFS partition that I could flash on there or anything. I thought maybe you were saying ODIN had some way to poke at something Heimdall didn't.

Yep (I'm sure I don't have one). My /sdcard space was wiped on more than one occasion, back when CWM 6 decided to wipe it for me when it first started showing up in the nightlies. I ran a backup, and *poof*, there goes my /sdcard files. I tried recovering the files from the space, and was successful in recovering most of the pictures, but any large binary files (videos, archives, etc.) were corrupt. That said, I don't think there were any efs backups on there anyway, and I was having this issue before the space was wiped, I just didn't know the IMEI was the problem.

Yeah, I tried going back to stock. I did see one (XDA?) thread somewhere that mentioned flashing over and over out of frustration magically worked for someone. Maybe I need to do that.
Does anyone here know anything about the " echo 'AT+EGMR=1,7,"your imei 1"' >/dev/pttycmd1 " command? I came across this, but it is all on international forums about international devices.
Edit: I don't see a pttycmd1 in our /dev so I'm guessing it'd just error out. Is there a similar command for the i777?

[Q] Why can't i flash a custom rom??

I have the XSG region (uae) model of the S3 9300 and i've had it for over a week by now, I've successfully rooted it without a problem and i love the phone. However, when i comes to installing custom roms that supposedly improve performance and battery life, it's not working out for me.
So far I've tried the Cyanogen mod and the liquidsmooth mod, using odin. With both of those i repeatedly tried installing them and i even wiped the cache and data, but they just end up sitting there at the boot screen, as if i did all this just to stare at a logo! why the hell don't they work?????????????? help please,

If it is GT-I9300, indeed it is an international model (if it is not faked ).
You should be able to, for instance via CWM or Mobile Odin (to keep root), flash a custom rom. Try to do a factory reset wipe/data wipe and install the rom again. For some roms you also might do a "fix permissions" from your custom recovery after you flashed it (but before you restart the phone).
Looks like you are trying to flash zip files in Odin.
STOP NOW!
Ok note we have sorted that, and before you do anything else, take a step back, and do some reading and learning, starting with the rollup sticky at the top of the general thread.

Rule two is backup your EFS folder before flashing instead of crying later .

Tl;dr install with mobile odin or clockwork recovery to install ZIP files (most ROMs come in this, also don't extract it), use dekstop odin to install tar files
Ok fair enough, thanks all for the help so far, I'll do a bit of reading then try again. I've had an Iphone for over 2 years that I jailbroke and used from day one. This phone is so much cooler however, I look forward to exploring the improved possibilities..
Ok that's it then, seems the only way something like this MAY work is by wiping the phone clean and starting over, something very inconvenient for my to do.. If down the line I ever get another phone I will try it then, it has been a headache trying it on this one. I decided to give it one more try yesterday after backing up everything, I used titanium backup and also made a back up in recovery mode, I tried fixing permissions after installing the latest cyanogen mod but it didn't make a difference, it just sat at the stupid boot screen, making my phone warm.. I suppose it's okay if one needs a hand warmer!
My woes did not end there however, as I assumed that since I made a backup i could just restore the phone to the way it was. That did not exactly happen unfortunately, clockwork mod restored the system and image just fine, but when it was restoring data it kept stopping at one file and giving me an "error restoring data" bull****. Great, so I boot the phone and now most of the apps don't work and just crash when I try to run them, the only way to fix them is by uninstalling and then re–installing them one by one! Very inconvenient! And to top it off avast told me I have several "problems" found, I assume that is those apps.
So there it is, I shouldn't have done that to my phone yesterday, it worked beautifully until that point, and I was using nobloat to get rid of the unnecessary stuff, make a rom flash pointless, but I was curious.. And there you go, that is my story, I thank you all for trying to help, and I appreciate it really, but I'm done with this nightmare, at least on this phone i am.
Peace
Ok a quick update:
After repeatedly having an occasional issue with the phone, I decided to go for it one more time, this time I followed your advice to the letter, and I'm happy to report that it Worked! I've installed the liquidsmooth Rom and it works great, except for a few issues which I'll talk about in another more relevant thread. Just wanted to say, I apologize for my earlier posts, I was at my wits end at the time!
Since the custom Rom issue has been resolved, I shall lay this thread to rest and hope others learn from it.
Peace.

[Q] Bootloop after Battery Pull

Sometimes if my phone freezes up and I need to do a battery pull my phone will randomly bootloop. This has happened to me about 3 or 4 times on all kinds of roms, tw and aosp. One time on a tw rom it ended up booting into the samsung setup wizard. It was weird because it didnt wipe my phone but all my apps were force closing if I opened them. The only fix was to wipe and flash again. This happened on Nephilim rom last. Also this has happened on several kernels. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you think this could be a hardware issue? Thanks in advance.
It's to my happened to me with certain ROM installs when I flashed dirty/without doing a factory reset prior to flashing.
