How many of you have settings/about/status stating that your serial number is unkown?
I am trying to figure out if this is a flaw or if its no big deal. Also want to know if this is what is causing me from not getting any ota update yet.

Add one more to the list. I've done multiple factory resets to no avail.
Additional info as FYI
Purchased from Best Buy
Actual serial number ends with 32919
Shows up here too, and match the label near charge port, mine from BB
so far there are 3 of us with no serial number and no OTA and at least 2 of the 3 bought from best buy
Mine`s a champagne from Abt
ive had several posts about this and i do correlate not being able to get ota updates because it is showing serial number unknown. Mine is a US unit bought from best buy.
I really hope mine doesn't have this problem... I ordered mine from best buy and it should be here sometime today..

I bought mine from Gamestop and I don't have a serial number as well and no OTA updates either.
Well looks Like we solved this mystery as to why some can't get ota updates ....now for the person who solves this puzzle they will get a nice shiny reward!
I wouldn't mind if mine had this problem. I never accept ota updates after i am rooted anyway. And if you have no serial number what will Asus copy to void your warranty when you use their bootloader unlocker.

We have a serial on box and outside of tablet but not in the actual about tablet area under settings. Not a big deal not to be able to do ota updates but it may delay us getting ics which sucks.

Yeah, not getting OTA-update is not a problem. But the waiting time until they put the latest firmware on their server is annoying.
I think everybody who has the problem should write Asus. It's the only way that they will start to look into this.
Have any of you tried to update via a microSD card?
The procedure is here.
note: the document ("Updated Version of SOP(English)") references TF101, but was present in the "manuals" section for the TF201 at support.asus.com.

The problem is asus hasn't posted the newest firmware. If someone with root could just get us the latest zip from their updated prime we would be able to update via sd card.

has anyone spoken to ASUS support on any offical issue?
Could be a group of productions models have defects. id check with ASUS incase it affects your warrenty.

The Razorclaw rooting method has been successful for a few of the "early" units obtained, but curious if those getting theirs now with the official release are still able to root.
For those that attempt, please indicate if this was before or after the OTA ...
Thanks
Has anyone tried this yet with their new Prime? Curious to see if it still works after the OTA. I'll have mine tomorrow to try but wanted to know if anyone did it already.

Thanks for trying. At least I know now to apply root first before OTA and see what happens, maybe root will be held, even though I doubt it.

it might hold. I know, with my Atrix4g, it holds root after several hard resets. My Ota doesn't work so not too sure. Even after hard reset ota wont work. Must have deleted something essential that ota checks for. Thats why I will wait for Ics b4 .
Tried it post OTA and didn't work for me either. Should have applied the root first but I was impatient.
I have learn my lesson before. I have put a hold on the ota so far but haven't try to root yet. Waiting on more concrete way that Razorclaw v1.0.1 will work and wont brick it.
Man, we are really the early adopters.
No root pre-OTA either.
hey just the asus transformer prime is my first tablet but i am just wondering what is the point of rooting?? I am at a lost for this.

I did the OTA without thinking and feel retarded about it... The number one reason I'd root at this point is to remove apps that I'll never use...
What will ICS bring
I want to know what ICS is going to do for the browser on the Prime.Scrolling & page rendering on some pages on my xoom was horrific. My friend comes along with his dang ipad & loaded & scrolled through the same web pages with ease.

I think you need to be at build 8.8.3.23 in order to root. I can't get to the demos at gamestop but I think might have been the build of the one I rooted. I have been asking if anybody that goes to gamestop to stop and see what the build is on the demo, but no one has done it so far.
It's a negative for me also. throws up an error: 256

I thought all gamestops had to send their demo units back to Asus in early December. The tablet store that I got my prime from no longer had it for some reason when I checked in mid December.
By the way, I tried to root my prime out of the box with Razorclaw, and it gave me an error. I doubt any of the gamestop models are rootable because they probably applied the fix when adding the games. I'm guessing that the only models that are rootable are the ones that were in the very first production batch that didn't have wifi issues and passed right through QA.

I rooted a gamestop demo the day it came into the store. I think i even saw it on the display when I went to pick mine up. If my schedule isn't hectic tomorrow, I'll probably go back there and check the build and see if the root is still on there. Was wondering if there was anything I can take from it (any folders/files/partitions) that would help get the root back on ours.

where did you get your prime
i got mine from best buy in USA and got update notification when i did a check for update
try doing a manual check for update
settings>about tablet>software update>check update
Please indicate in the title that this is a question, otherwise it reads like you have seen the update.
If we knew when it would be, there would be a post about it already...
I am fairly certain the ICS update was global. Are you connected to internet and does your Prime have serial numbers listed? It seems that people that don't have serial numbers are unable to get the update.

No only US and TW models got it yet. Confirmed by ASUS.
I got it from PC World on the 2nd Jan. Tried the manual check but nothing yet so must assume it will come in the next few days.
Im in the uk with a UK prime and have no ICS update yet either...
Still waiting here!

no update for me
There will be no update until the WW version of the update is sent live. As Diamondback2010 said only US and TW updates are live at the moment. If I'm not mistaken, Canadians are also using WW version so even though they're only a stones throw away from the US they don't have ICS either. Just assume the 12th and any earlier will be a bonus (so long as you don't end up with an update brick).

Thanks for the heads up guys! Here we go!
Congrats UK! Glad to hear that I can update my tablet once it actually gets shipped from UK without having to worry about backups prior to update.
Downloading as I type. Fingers crossed my perfect Prime stays that way!
Got mine this morning... cant' really tell much has changed, but it just feels that little bit smoother and finished.
Camera was stuttering after the update, i'm sure nothing that reboot wont sort.
Looking great to me so far. So smooth, just shows how bad Honeycomb was when you have a basis for comparison, under the hood.
Anyone else finding the check for firmware update button is greyed out?
Before you jump on me about a manual update, know that I've already contacted Asus, and they got back to me about 3 weeks later telling me to manually update my Prime. Tried it, but it didn't work. (The ones available for download on the site are for WW serial numbers)
Here's the problem: I still haven't gotten ICS on my Prime with an HTK75 serial code. I haven't found any really recent post on this (but a lot of similar issues on TF101s with the same serial number), and was just wondering if you guys have the same issue. Been trying to fix this for months, so this might be my last hope. I know that there has been a serial issue, but most of you guys seem to have gotten that fixed... any help? Or is it possible that Asus still hasn't made a fix for this serial?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
By the way, I tried asking this question back when the serial code reboot problem was a real issue, but no one had an answer.

you need to find the thread on serial number fix that a developer came up with. I think its bumblebee or something. he has another name up here also. but he made a serial fix so you can manually enter in your serial number in the prime and it'll stick. l think you'll be able to update after that. or you can pm Gary keys with the issue if you looking for am official fix.
Thank you so much!

So, you're saying he should root his device, apply a fix that hasn't worked for anyone, then contact Gary, whose posts are sporadic and whose personal interactions with forum members are even more rare, as opposed to contacting Asus customer service (you know, like it says to do in the product manual)? The serial number will stick with the fix that was posted, but it doesn't get you OTA updates. Gary is not authorizing RMA's, as far as I know, and he doesn't have an "official fix" beyond manually updating the firmware...so far, Gary has added conjecture and a few "try this"'s to the conversation, but mostly lots and lots of needless delay to an otherwise straightforward RMA process for a bug that simply goes on (for all but one poster here) until you RMA the unit to Asus.
Frankly, if the serial number developer "fix" would or could present any sort of obstacle to the RMA process, even via a simple delay to starting the RMA process, I'd advise you to avoid it, and advise others against prescribing it.
So far, there is only one user I know of who had the serial number problem and got it to work without an RMA, the rest are still without OTA updates....except for those who have completed the RMA process. Incidentally, the bootloader unlock tool will also not work for Prime owners with the serial number bug.
My advice is to begin the RMA process now, not later. So far, there has been nothing from Gary or Asus engineering that suggests waiting or monkeying around will do you any good. And guess what? The guys at Asus support will walk you through a manual update just as Gary will suggest to do.
Thanks, I think I'll try once again to contact Asus. I've never seen another Prime with the same serial, though, so if for some reason I still can't get it to work, I'll try what the first commenter said. Either way, thanks guys. I now have a couple new lead on finally getting this to work...
EDIT: I just got off the phone with Asus Tech Support. They were very helpful. Looks like I'm going through the RMA process.
Anybody want to share the software upgrade?
The dongle is useless by itself
There was a forced over the air update that went to all primes last Thursday. You should of gotten it already. If not, just check for new updates
I don't think I have that? Is there a version change to firmware or is it an application?
*facepalm*
Settings > About tablet > System Update.
You havent unlocked your bootloader right? Nor rooted your device and changed system files or deleted stock rom files? Only check for updates when you meet the conditions above.
Not unlocked but rooted and it says no update.
I'm on. 21 firmware, what version should I look for?
..lmfao
You won't see any change to firmware. If your device can still receive updates, you already have it. There is no software to look for. Just attach and lock GPS dongle to prime. Then go into settings then location and cut on GPS. You can cut off those other location services and cut off wifi. You can even do a fresh reboot before you attach dongle for a bare bones GPS test. Use GPS test or GPS status test to test it out. When the dongle is attached to prime and GPS is on, it'll work automatically. No special software or program to use it. When its attached, the dongle GPS overrides the internal chip one.
Once again,THERE IS NOTHING TO LOOK FOR. IT WORKS AUTOMATICALLY

My device absolutely should take OTA updates.
However, I did not see an update from last week and there is not firmware changes.
The GPS dongle only says to install the dongle and get a software upgrade. How do I know exactly whether or not I have an upgrade?
I also just got a C3 sn prime and I don't see any software update aside from. 21... this is a tremendous fail on Asus part because I expect to get a taskbar notification or a dot revision upward for any type of software upgrade.
Lastly, cutting off GPS from setting doesn't work. Nothing happens.

Nooo...lol. all you need to know is that if you have the latest ICS update, which is .21, then you good. Nothing else is needed nor is there any firmware change to see.
Just plug the dang thing up to prime and cut GPS on and it'll work..lmfao. just kidding but that's really all you have to do. Just make to sure to lock dongle to prime and have wifi off if you want to see how well the GPS works by itself. Like I said before, when dongle is attached to prime, and you cut on GPS, the prime will automatically use the GPS in the dongle. There won't be nothing to see or whatever to let you know dongle is being used instead. Prime already has latest change to make dongle override the internal GPS.
Or just follow the included instructions or in the PDF manual. Its really not complicated at all. Very simple. Just plug it up to prime and cut GPS on. If you already on .21 then don't worry anymore about the software. It'll work automatically. You making it more complicated than it really is.
I was the one who had one first and did the Gps dongle test thread several days ago. So I know how it operates. Any other questions just ask here or send me a pm.
There is no PDF manual...the shipment is just a plastic thing with 2 lines on the sticker as instruction.
I got the. 21 ota update a month ago not last week...so I'm not sure if I have the gps dongle update or not...
Does anyone not see the implication of Asus pushing an update without any notification or dot revision?

Just forget about the pushed update. I should've never mentioned that in my thread as now people are getting it confused.
This is the last thing I can say to help, IF YOU ALREADY ON .21 UPDATE, THEN DONT WORRY. YOUR PRIME WILL AUTOMATICALLY SUPPORT THE DONGLE. You can read the manual in my GPS dongle test thread. You keep worrying about the pushed firmware but there is no need to worry about it. All you need is to be on .21. That's it. If you are, then just plug upbdongle and cut on GPS.
Why make this complicated when its the exact opposite.
I will update my thread to clear confusion up. People worrying to much about seeing a change in firmware when there is none to be seen. It was just an addition pushed to
21. There is no physical proof or oindicator to show that. If you on. 21 update, then forget about everything else....sheesh..lol

Yep, people are receiving them already. You can log on to your Asus account. Then click on GPS dongle status tab on left side near the bottom. It'll pull up your. Dongle info and tell you if its shipped off already or not. Doesn't go into more detail than THST. Like it won't tell you tracking info. It'll just say shipped off or still processing.
Yeah, but what about the FW update I need?
I don't have the dongle yet, but I need to get that FW update from last week, or else mine won't work. Why doesn't Asus explain how to get the software? I need the software?
Do YOU have the software? Can you give me the software, or tell me where can I get the software? I just want to know that when I get it I will be able to get the software.
Where oh where is the dot upgrade software?
Cause, if I understand you correctly, it won't work without the upgrade to firmware with software, right?

Actually I think this is very very SUBTLE sarcasm
Sorry folks,
I think the confusion stems from the first reply where it says a force update was pushed to our devices last week.
I didn't notice any update from last week at all, the .21 update was pushed a month ago.
If Asus did push an update without reving up the FW revision number or providing a notification, then there is a serious concern from me as an end user because there will be no traceability to what is actually done to my device which I purchased.
So, in a nut shell, the confusion stems from someone saying the update was pushed last week...

Hello, wish you have a good time.
I've got a Huawei g750 t-01. Once I updated it to android 4.4.2 and now its serial number seen in setting > about phone is different from the one labelled on the back of the device beneath the battery.

Shouldn't happen, may have been different when you got your device, but if you're sure it was the same prior to update then I would be suspicious of that update, was it direct from oem?

Can't remember whether it was the same before the update.
And I updated the device via recovery mode.

Its real unlikely the update changed the serial number, I would assume it was either tampered with if you bought it used or a mistake from factory

So, would I face any problems?

Its valid as it works but if you have issues down the road there could be warranty issued. If you purchased direct through the oem or official supplier you should be OK, if you bought through a 3rd party like eBay you may not. Either way just hope for a problem free phone
