The Razorclaw rooting method has been successful for a few of the "early" units obtained, but curious if those getting theirs now with the official release are still able to root.
For those that attempt, please indicate if this was before or after the OTA ...
Thanks
Has anyone tried this yet with their new Prime? Curious to see if it still works after the OTA. I'll have mine tomorrow to try but wanted to know if anyone did it already.

Thanks for trying. At least I know now to apply root first before OTA and see what happens, maybe root will be held, even though I doubt it.

it might hold. I know, with my Atrix4g, it holds root after several hard resets. My Ota doesn't work so not too sure. Even after hard reset ota wont work. Must have deleted something essential that ota checks for. Thats why I will wait for Ics b4 .
Tried it post OTA and didn't work for me either. Should have applied the root first but I was impatient.
I have learn my lesson before. I have put a hold on the ota so far but haven't try to root yet. Waiting on more concrete way that Razorclaw v1.0.1 will work and wont brick it.
Man, we are really the early adopters.
No root pre-OTA either.
hey just the asus transformer prime is my first tablet but i am just wondering what is the point of rooting?? I am at a lost for this.
If you guys could be so kind to give me a brief summary.

I did the OTA without thinking and feel retarded about it... The number one reason I'd root at this point is to remove apps that I'll never use...
What will ICS bring
I want to know what ICS is going to do for the browser on the Prime.Scrolling & page rendering on some pages on my xoom was horrific. My friend comes along with his dang ipad & loaded & scrolled through the same web pages with ease.

why are you getting a replacement for?

I think you need to be at build 8.8.3.23 in order to root. I can't get to the demos at gamestop but I think might have been the build of the one I rooted. I have been asking if anybody that goes to gamestop to stop and see what the build is on the demo, but no one has done it so far.
It's a negative for me also. throws up an error: 256

I thought all gamestops had to send their demo units back to Asus in early December. The tablet store that I got my prime from no longer had it for some reason when I checked in mid December.
By the way, I tried to root my prime out of the box with Razorclaw, and it gave me an error. I doubt any of the gamestop models are rootable because they probably applied the fix when adding the games. I'm guessing that the only models that are rootable are the ones that were in the very first production batch that didn't have wifi issues and passed right through QA.

I rooted a gamestop demo the day it came into the store. I think i even saw it on the display when I went to pick mine up. If my schedule isn't hectic tomorrow, I'll probably go back there and check the build and see if the root is still on there. Was wondering if there was anything I can take from it (any folders/files/partitions) that would help get the root back on ours.

I wanted to ask the community to see if my experience is unique, or of other people have had this problem. I've been loving my G-Tab since I recieved it off woot, the only problem is that the device started to stop charging while plugged in a week or so ago. At first I could move the plug a little and the device would start charging again. After a few days of this, the unit stopped charging altogether, and I found out that the 1.7v receptor on the tablet had broken free from the circuit board. I called viewsonic G-Tablet support so that I could have my unit repaired or replaced. I called the first day, and gave them my info, they said they would call me back. I called 5 hours later, and got the same song and dance, no one called me back. I submitted an email to viewsonic to see if they could just ship me a box so I can send the tablet in for repair. I got call saying that I would be contacted the following buisiness day. The following day came and went, and I have not been contacted.
Has anyone else had to put up with this kind of bull**** from viewsonic before? Thier phone support has been god awful, and I find it completely unexcuasable that I have to wait 72 hours before I can even start the process of getting my tablet replaced/repaired.
Something happened over the weekend - the CS center completely changed and now they seem to be severely understaffed and, imo, not trained. This is US Merchants btw, not Viewsonic (that's public knowledge tmk, I asked the CS rep over the phone yesterday who they worked for and he told me).
That makes it all the more likely that any update tomorrow is 3588.

On their site May is for the Flash update--which most of us are already using anyway. If there's no real update today as promised yesterday, I'm beginning tothink they thought the 3991 was ready to roll--until all your testing proved otherwise. Now they are back to square one. If it took until mid April to update the flash January note, I don't hold out much hope.

Well, that's not entirely true. CM7 is already on the device so that statement is out the window to start with.
What it does mean though is that the device loses some functionality with the lost support. Video playback is pretty limited beyond Froyo 2.2.
You have to look at the device now. Does it do what you want? If your entire purchase was based not on what it does currently but what it 'may' be able to do then it does lose some value.
For the $284 I paid for the device it still does 99% of what I want it to do. There are less than 100 tablet oriented apps on the market anyway. I don't expect that number to grow exponentially either given the cost of entry for a Honeycomb device and the seriously limited audience. That means that almost all of the software that exists on the market will work on your device now and by the time the tablet software section gets more attractive you'd probably be looking for a new device anyway.
my 2c anyway.

Oh boy, how to answer that?
Here's my honest answer, regardless of my own bias against Viewsonic at this particular moment. Your device probably cost you ~$300, I assume? You have the device in hand now, and it's still at least $100 less than the ASUS. If the device does what you need it to do, I would still consider keeping it.
The big pros on the ASUS, imo, is the IPS screen and the obvious "newness" giving it the edge from a support standpoint. Plus, you don't need to hack it for the Market. But it is $100 more and we don't know when it will be released in the States yet. And you don't get a USB port without the dock, keep in mind.
The pros on the GTAB is that you have it in your hand right now, there is a major development effort and mods galore, and it is easily hackable (the ASUS is still TBD). But there's issue of vendor support that we are all concerned about.
I don't like my GTAB because of the screen angles, and it's the reason why it ended up being relegated to a dev unit. But, besides that, I still think it's decent bang for the buck if it does what you need it to do. For me, I am probably getting an ASUS for the IPS screen, but again that's because I need good screen angles and the best screen within my price range.

Do you think i should hang on to my gtab or return it.. I am going to give a call to the Viewsonic number and find out what the case is as well about the update servers and if we are getting anymore updates. I have until 4/28 to return this unit to TD.
Ok then - i could get both. but then how do i convince my girlfriend to use the g-tablet and not the asus...
Just got the prime and it's prompting me to update the firmware ota. Not sure if i should cuz i dont want to lose any ability to root later on. This update might patch any exploit.
What do you think?
For those who updated, did you notice any difference?

Id say yes and update. people here posting not being able to root before and after Ota. Update helps your device even run better. add far as force close goes, more than likely from an app you installed thats not really compatible yet with prime or honeycomb version. tons of apps still needed to be updated from developers side.

Really? I have read much people who couldn't root it with that method. With or without update.
Asus doesn't care about us rooting the device(they are not apple), I am sure they didn't try to block it on purpose. There will be a way to root sooner or later.
And even if I am wrong and there won't be a way to root you are going to want to update to ICS either way so you might as well update now while your at it.
They have changed the APK. The APK is an AES-128 private key that can only be read by the AES engine on the motherboard.
I don't think they did that on accident, it's pretty obvious to me it was done precisely to block the razorclaw root (which uses a leaked APK).
note: braifart led me to type APK when I meant SBK ...

I see your point, but on the other hand the original way of installing an apk was a huge security flaw as well so they pretty much had to change it.
I just started my research on the last transformer and noticed asus really is trying to block us from root for some reason. I came from a xoom and a tab 10.1 which both got rooted right away.
I am wondering why asus cares so much.
I wouldnt care all that much about root until ICS is out^^ Lots of stuff is going to change anyway.

Here is the Update file directly from the cache folder:
http://db.tt/yAFWWwuk
Place it in your cache folder and the update should be recognized.
If you don't have root access yet, try to rename it to DE_epad-9.4.2.11-20120117.zip and copy it to the root directory of a microSD-card. This may also trigger the update (untested).
If it works for you, please let us know.
Good luck!

No problem with Glowball, Shadow Gun THD or Riptide HD at all.
no glowball for me... it dont work for me... close without a fc message
I think I read someone say there is an update available for glowball in the market that will get it running again.
i got ics update today too and a second update for gps or so... since the ics update I have no longer some special german letters like ä,ü,ö shown in browsers and on websites (firefox, android browser and maxthon), I don't have the @ in browser over keyboard and all tegra games will close after a few seconds of loading. I've allready contacted asus about the BETA ICS in my eyes. as I wrote the message to asus, I found 2 more buggs while writing and editing the text. when you write text between finished lines and press "blank", the cursor jumps to the end of the text, so you have after every fu****** word going back to the position where you have written in... and after writing some words faster (I can really write fast XD) the TOUCHPAD is active for some seconds?!?!?! This is not really funny, if you need this tablet for work.... . I bought my prime in austria... .

I rarely start new threads here on XDA, but I thought this topic was deserving of having its own thread.
Many of us who had perfectly working Primes have had our units seriously screwed up by ASUS' .13 firmware update. Whether it's the sleep of death, ridiculous battery drain, or both, many of our tablets have went from working great to being borderline useless. It's as if many of our Primes were sacrificed to fix a few other Primes that had freezing problems that we never had.
With that said, I don't see why we should have to wait for weeks while Asus works on a fix for their last "fix" that caused these problems in the first place, when there is a perfectly good firmware already written that works great for most users. Why can't ASUS just give us the option to go back to the .11 firmware while they continue working on newer firmware? Why is this so hard? Am I missing something?

To be honest at this point I just wish they would give us our money back this product is a bust too many quality control issues.
the only way you'll get your money back is if you bought it from asus directly, but if you bought it at a retail store, you have to go back to a retail store.
however, im sure you know you can send it to rma and you'll get back it back fixed in a few weeks. sorry
In theory if someone could figure out where misc_version was stored then maybe someone with more brains than me could write a script to change this to a lower version allowing downgrade.
I may be barking up the wrong tree of course.
I had issues after an earlier firmware upgrade and a factory reset fixed it. I suggest trying that before investigating returns, downgrades or RMA's.

it was tweaked to account for processor clock differences in the Primes experiencing ICS lockup issue unless they allow us to somehow roll back to 1.11 this isn't happening anytime soon.
Im with the thought of the factory reset and installing apps one at a time. Im updated to the latest nd havent had any issues save the youtube thing that started before the update. Ive had apps crash to home screen and either ditched them or reinstalled. No battery problems here. What I noted after the update was fewer app crashes, better (not stronger) wifi preformance and the noise line that was popping through the screen every now and then hasnt happened since. Im thinking a great deal of issues are apps that are not optomized with ICS.

Evening all,
Just been updated to OS 4.5.1 on 7" HDX, I can't seem to find a root for it as of yet. Does any one know if its available yet?
Thank you,
Clickbait title :/
Same here. My Kindle Fire HD 6 got updated to the same thing and I really want to try rooting it but there appears to be no way to root it
I'm in for a fix too.
even if this is bait thread, lets hope it will spark something that leads to it
Roll back to all devices updated to 4.x OS

Is there anyone trying to find a way to root?
If any new root is known please tell me.
Would be nice to get access to google play store e.g.
Thanks a lot.

People keep referring to this thread but I have contacted Amazon about 6 times now and all 6 people told me there was absolutely no way that they could or ever would roll back your software. All 6 said once you upgrade to 4.5.1 there was no way what so ever for them to take you back. I even got a couple of emails from there tech support team stating this. So no, customer care will not roll back your software.
I had a very unsucessful back and forth between like 12 different people at Amazon with no success. I even provided a few apps in their store that will absoutely not run in 4.5.x (Quicken 2013 for example) and they had no interest in rolling me back. Though I did not have them explicitly state that a rollback was impossible. They just apologized that their forced software update was causing me grief and to deal with it.
Possible way to root. Was reading info on this vuln CVE-2014-7911 and it seems like it might be a way that KitKat could be rooted. It was patched in Lollipop. Just thought I would share.

I did some reading into this, and it turns out we'll need a bit more than that to get root access (i.e. another exploit).

My device is also updated to 4.5.1 .
After talking to the nice amazon support i came back not to set the device back.
nevertheless i have to wait until some of the xda guys will hack that too.
i got the nexus 7 before. so i have to say that the kindle hdx7 is much better then nexus7.
but it is crap within fireos there is no possibility to login to spotify with the google account. also on some other apps. thats really *hit.

The software really is the crippling factor, not the hardware. It's just sad that Amazon still can't see that and tries with every effort to lock down those that try to get around it.
whats the chance of upgrade?
Does anyone know what the chance of upgrade of 4.5.1 to stock android rom for fire hdx 7" and possible timeframe?
Is there anyone still working on it and are we just waiting for source code to try and find a way to unlock it.
I just picked up a fire hdx, but it came installed with 4.5.1 and the software is pretty unusable compared to my old jellybean tablet.
As a sidenote would it be worth trying to turn off ota updates so they are not kept ahead of any patch?
Damn this thread. I want my click back. lol
Man, I updated too, is there a way to turn off the automatic update?

After looking over the source code for the HDX Toolkit, for some reason I think the way it does it might still work on 4.5.1.
