[Q] Regarding resetting to 1.4.0 - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hey guys,
So, my NT did the automatic update to 1.4.1 and destroyed my root. After that happened, I thought resetting it to factory 1.4.1 would be better than keeping a half-hacked NT. After a day or so of using the 1.4.1 version, I miss my rooted 1.4.0 NT.
But, I don't have an SD card. Do I need to go out and buy one to get 1.4.0 back? Is there anyway without having an SD card for my NT to get 1.4.0? Please let me know!
Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Currently the only method for restoring to 1.4.0 requires an SD card.

2GB micro SD cards are cheap as hell. And if you can spare a 20 or so you can get an 8gb or even 16gb and have some nice expandable storage.
I remember my first 1GB full size SD card ~6-7 years ago. It cost $50. I recently bought a 32GB microSD on sale for half that price.

You don't need a SD Card

That isn't true. I did my restore back to 1.4.0 without the SD card .

Since your NT came with 1.4.0 and you received the OTA, all you have to do is do another restore, and follow Indirect's process. Turn off Wifi after you register the device. Then read Indirect's process and watch his videos to help you along, download USB drivers and files needed...all on his thread posting. Also, if you want to bypass the registration process, there is a way of doing that too...just search for it; you'll find it.
Most important, make sure you follow the process to block OTA's moving forward, it's very easy and is done by using Titanium Backup. Just make sure you freeze the process before installing the new files. This can be done without SD but you have to know how to do so. The answers are here in the forums.

[Q] New nook/safest way to mod?

So I'll be getting the fire for my wife and probably not rooting that right off the bat but I'll be getting the nook tab16g and was curious as to the safest/less hassle way to get cm7/root on it BEFORE b&n locks it down with either 1.4.2 or what have u. Dont let it connect to my wifi and make a root sd card in advance? Right after getting it out of the box put the root sd card in and then with another sd card have the cm7 rom to load once cwm is loaded? What caches (dalvik, etc) if Any need to be wiped? And lastly how to unlock/unrestrict the internal memory so I can use more than 1 gig. Thank you in advance...from what I've seen the rooting process is very similar to how I rooted my droid Eris back I'm the day

Just received my nook tablet yesterday and here was what I followed
Before receiving NT I got my sd card ready days before using these directions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22029125&postcount=131
Opened nook took it out of box, created account blah blah got to home screen just to make sure everything was ok with it (screen, etc).
Then I continued following the directions booted to cwm and flashed the update.zip from the post above. After that I booted up NT and updated the nt hidden settings app in the market (after flashing update.zip you get adw launcher, market, etc)
Made sure in nt hidden settings block ota updates as well as allow side installing was enabled.
Then installed CWM to the device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
Took my sd card OUT of the tablet and formatted from my COMPUTER (had to be re-partitioned using easeus partition magic, then formatted fat32)
Then from there you can either insert sd card and use tablet or install cm7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
Preparing the sd card before receiving tablet (takes a while to write image to it) this entire process from unboxing to booting cm7 took 15-20 minutes and was extremely easy
You said you formatted your COMPUTER? I have to format my computer in order to root? Or do I just need a computer that is using fat32? Or did u mean sOmething else entirely?
Edit: never mind....6am reading mode fail....you formatted your sd card with your computer. Thankfully I have 2 sd cards so should be easier
Edit2: you did indeed initially register and create an account with b&n...is it safe to do that? Doesn't the newer 1.4.2 update block rooting?
he said "formatted FROM my computer" - ie. do the format in your computer using card reader

[Q] Nook Noob

Please help a noob out here. I know the answers are out there, but I am not sure which method is best to use. I am familiar with rooting on my android cellphone, but I am not so sure about the methods used to root the nook tablet. They seem a bit more complicated and I want to make sure I have the correct info well explained.
I would like to know the following:
Where can I find the thread concerning installation of CWM/Rooting and how to back up my tablet before I I do anything else? (I have learned this the hard way, once. Never again will I proceed before backing up so I can restore it when I screw it up)
What is the most stable ROM that has been developed for the tablet so far?
Where can I find the instructions on how to install this ROM so that even an idiot (aka, me) can install this?
Maybe I am just skittish, but I hope you understand.
Thanks in advance!!!
Are you looking to root and run your ROM from SD card? Or would you rather install things to internal?
Thanks for replying. If I rooted and ran ROM from SD card, would that leave the Nook with the ability to run as originally designed if I opted to do that? (by basically removing the SD card and letting the Nook boot normally?) I have never used that option on any of my rooted phones. If so, that is probably the way to go. What do you recommend? I know it is a risk either way, but it sounds like running the ROM from the SD card seems safer.

I just bought a 32GB class 4 SD card tonight, so I am ready.....
This thread might be a good place to get you started. Or at least start thinking about how you want to get set up.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528625
Using this method by albertwertz allows you to put regular root, CWM, and CM7 (most stable CyanogenMod ROM so far) all on an SD card. He even includes step-by-step videos and does a good job explaining. His YouTube channel contains more videos of various ways to root, too.
If you want everything on your SD card and not have to worry about messing with internal, a method like this is probably your best bet.
Thanks. I tried following Alberts method step by step twice now, and everything seems to go right as far as making the SD card, but when I insert it into my 16GB Nook Tablet, running 1.4.2, and partitioned at BN, it will not reboot. The only way it will reboot is if I take the SD card that I made to root the tablet. It will reboot into normal operation mode. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I am really getting frustrated.

Try turning your nook off, insert sd card, then plug it in to charger or usb cord. Some model nooks have to plugged in to boot from sd card.
I finally got it to work. Everything went well. CM7 installed, looked great. When I installed Google Apps. It comes up to the registration screen, but when it tells me to touch the android, the tablet does not register my touch and I can't move past the screen
Finally got everything working. I don't know why I got all worried. Had to reinstall a couple of times and fix permissions. Just like always. I must say I really like CM7 compared to the Nook interface. Nice job Devs! Thanks for everyone's help pointing me in the right direction.

You should be fine, as long as you can do a factory reset. I had CM7 on my Nook, restored it to the original software via CWM, and didn't have any problems at B&N.
Actually, they do the update with a bootable micro-SD, so it might not even matter at all what OS version you're running at all in the first place...
As I understand it, the repartition card completely overwrites your drive, erasing root and whatnot, and also updating you to 1.4.2

Hi,
I had B&N reformat the HD to give me the 8GB so unrooted using the Nook Unrooter and did a factory reset. Took the tablet in and five (maybe 10) had 8 more GB...took it home and rerooted....good as new!

Before I brought my 16Gb in for a B&N repartition, I unrooted & updated it to stock 1.4.2. After the repartition I was still on 1.4.2. When I got home, I ran adamoutler's aclaim_update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190 (props) to revert back to 1.4.0, then rooted via albertwertz's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630 (props) SD card method.

Hello, i have a rooted 1.40 with ota blocks (9.9.9.9) and other crap I did months ago. I wouldn't mind bringing mine in. I was wonderling..
note this is a question and not directions for people to follow in this thread.
can I do a nandroid backup, use the acclaim update (to remove root and cwm) and then let it update and take it in to barnes and noble for repartioning?

Yes, you can do that.
Although it was my understanding that Barnes & Noble's repartition SD card reset all partitions to factory anyway so it wouldn't matter what you had installed to your device at all. Can someone confirm this?

I don't know if the acclaim_update will remove CWM installed internally (if that is what you have); I did not have it installed back then. Maybe this would be a useless step, but I would use Indirect's recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650927 (props) to flash stock recovery, run acclaim (or 8 failed boots), update to 1.4.2, then bring it in to B&N for repartitioning.
I took mine in today and it was still rooted. She looked at the settings, asked me if it was rooted and I said yes. She booted from her SD card and it reverted me to unrooted 4.1.2. I did not have CWM internal so I can't say whether it would have survived. When I got home I just restored the backup I made before I took it in and I am now exactly as I was prior, except, I have 8 gb of internal storage.
Doesn't really matter as I mostly run CM7 from SD and play with CM9 on the internal.

This, to me, is likely a 'mileage may vary' sort of instance. I doubt all B&N employees would be this kind. As such, I would recommend to anyone trying to have B&N repartition to either have a backup B&N to go to after the first one rejects you or make a backup and restore to stock yourself prior to bringing it in.
My point is that it is not the end of the world if you can't get rid of root. You could always say "can you please get this back to stock for me, I bought it from a friend".
It is also no big deal to restore a previous CWM backup and you are right back in business.

installing cwm and running android sd card HELP

after 2 days of googling and getting nowhere. i'm looking for some help guys.
i have the NT 8G running 1.4.2. i HAD it rooted. with adw launcher for the android experience. but i tried 2 different cwm's on sd card and ended up with a reset to factory. so now we're back to stock with no root.
it didn't look very user friendly for my aunt that's not that tech savy anyways.
my sister has the color to which i was able to root and make a android os sd card for her. so she can either boot into the nook OR the android by simply inserting her sd card.
i'm trying to do the same thing for the NT. but getting nowhere.
i'm using a SD 32g card. and windows 7.
i'mm not emulator savy so running terminals does me no good.
is there any EASY step by step instructions for installing whatever root i may need AND creating an android os SD card so i can do the same thing with the tablet that i did with the color?
anything someone can point me to.
it took me 2 days just to figure out that i needed to hold the n button + power to get the sd cwm thingy going. but no root has happened.
i've gone through tons of threads and forums and different variatons of software. i'm burned out and just want to get this thing done.

How about you just make a CM7 (or CM9) SD ROM. That way you can also use the stock ROM when the SD card isn't inserted.
To do this, go to the Development subforum and look for the thread for the 16GB and 8GB compatible beta for CM7.
In the first post of that thread, you will find pretty simple instructions on how to make your SD ROM. Good luck!

[Q] Noob Alert! Nook Tablet 8GB Rooting Question!

Ok, so I have firmware 1.4.3 on my Nook Tablet. I have rooted my nook using this video (Please copy and paste this on Youtube, as I am new and cannot put in links) [How To] Root The Nook Tablet (firmware 1.4.3) In 10 Minutes or Less Tutorial. After rooting it, I believe it runs Android 2.2
Now, I was wondering how to upgrade this version of Android to say, Jellybean or Ice Cream Sandwich. Could someone explain these instructions to me clearly? I really want to do it, but I need clear instructions, as I am not that high-tech.
I also want a way in which it will not affect my barnes and nobles apps and data.
Help would be very appreciated! Thank you!

Well you don't just "upgrade" to Jelly Bean. The method you used is rather old. CM10.1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2 is currently the newest version available. Since you're new I suggest using a SDC image http://goo.im/devs/succulent/acclaim/cyanogenmod/image/cm_acclaim_10.1_21APR2013_HD_SDC_IMG.7z
All you need to do is write the image file to an SD card and you're good to go. Use win32diskimager to write the image file to your SD card.
The root I did boots from the internal memory...so I do not have to unroot my Nook and do your method? I can just burn the image into my sd and insert it in?

Yes. Everything runs off the SD card and not your eMMC (internal memory). If you want to unroot your tablet the easiest thing to do would be write this image file to an SD card and plug it into your nook.
http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/make-unbrick-repartition-image/
It's a repart image that will restore stock 1.4.2 rom.
As for the CM10.1 SDC ROM when you write it to your SD card it creates the partitions for you instead of you making them with a partitioning software. You may expand your DATA1 and SDCARD partitions MiniTool Partition Wizard (you'll see what I'm talking about once you write the image file.)
So I just plug in my sd card and the nook unroots? Is there anything I have to do or click on the nook?
After I unroot, won't I get over the air update to 1.4.3? So is this new root you are telling me to do going to work for 1.4.3?
So lets pretend I unrooted my nook and burned the image into my sd card for the new root. I put in the sd card in my nook, and turn it on, and then its rooted just like that?
Did you do this to your nook? What are the chances of bricking my nook? Also I have an 8gb nook tablet...this root you are telling me to do works for it right?
Sorry for all the questions but I want to take extra precautions not to brick my nook. And thank you so much for your help!

You can keep your internal rooted stock rom if you want, I was just suggesting you could use the repart image which deletes your partition and rewrites stock 1.4.2 right out of the box. This blocks over the air updates, so your nook won't update to 1.4.3 (you don't need it anyways because it only blocked rooting).
When you put the repart image SD card into your NT it will show a screen saying "Installing New Software" then a green checkmark will appear. Take your SD card out and it will start to Install New Software. Once it's done you'll have a fresh out of the box Nook! (kinda)
Rooting is simply the process of giving a device "administrator privileges" or root access to change all files. The new ROMs come pre-rooted so you don't need to root your device at all. When using the SDC CM10.1 image it will create the 4 partitions on the SD card for you (and you expand them later for more app space.)
When you write the CM10.1 image file to your SD card then put it in your nook. It will boot Cyanoboot and will start "SDC Boot" which will boot your ROM. There is a 0.01 % of you bricking your device during this process, so you are safe.

So just to make sure, it is ok for me not to unroot and turn my nook into stock 1.4.2? It will work on 1.4.3? And if I do not unroot, will this use up alot of battery when I put in the Jellybean ROM via SD Card? Can the Nook Tablet be able to handle Jellybean well?
Also, the SD card I used to root my nook into the old Gingerbread was a "Patriot 32gb Class 4". I already fixed up the SD card so it is back to 32gb again...can I use this type of SD card for the Jellybean root? I do not have a Sandisk.
The repart image takes your NT back to stock 1.4.2, from which you should be able to upgrade to stock 1.4.3.
To create a CM10.x SDcard see http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/cm10-1-jellybean-android-4-2-2-for-nook-tablet-0218/ and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098419.
See this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633 for extensive discussion of comparative performance (for the purpose running ROM) of SD cards of various makes/models.
Thank You!

This is exactly what I needed. I tried looking around and either a link didn't work or I couldn't get something else to work. Now I just have to figure out how to open up some space on it. Seems to only allow me to use a quarter of it. More searching tomorrow! Thank you to the OP for posting this also! Quick question, if I remove the SD card will that remove cm10.1 from the nook? Not sure if it's on just the SD or internal. Oh and one more question how do I access the Barnes and Noble part now? Mainly just the book part. If I can't I can always covert to .mobi and continue to use my kindle app. Thanks again. I foresee me having lot's of fun with this.

If you remove the sd card you'll boot into the BN system again and get full access to everything there.
To get more storage space on the card you can use for example Mini Tool Partition software (that's the one I use, but I know there are other free ones available as well), and change the storage partition to use up all the unallocated memory on the card.
