Please help a noob out here. I know the answers are out there, but I am not sure which method is best to use. I am familiar with rooting on my android cellphone, but I am not so sure about the methods used to root the nook tablet. They seem a bit more complicated and I want to make sure I have the correct info well explained.
I would like to know the following:
Where can I find the thread concerning installation of CWM/Rooting and how to back up my tablet before I I do anything else? (I have learned this the hard way, once. Never again will I proceed before backing up so I can restore it when I screw it up)
What is the most stable ROM that has been developed for the tablet so far?
Where can I find the instructions on how to install this ROM so that even an idiot (aka, me) can install this?
Maybe I am just skittish, but I hope you understand.

Are you looking to root and run your ROM from SD card? Or would you rather install things to internal?
Thanks for replying. If I rooted and ran ROM from SD card, would that leave the Nook with the ability to run as originally designed if I opted to do that? (by basically removing the SD card and letting the Nook boot normally?) I have never used that option on any of my rooted phones. If so, that is probably the way to go. What do you recommend? I know it is a risk either way, but it sounds like running the ROM from the SD card seems safer.

I just bought a 32GB class 4 SD card tonight, so I am ready.....

Using this method by albertwertz allows you to put regular root, CWM, and CM7 (most stable CyanogenMod ROM so far) all on an SD card. He even includes step-by-step videos and does a good job explaining. His YouTube channel contains more videos of various ways to root, too.
If you want everything on your SD card and not have to worry about messing with internal, a method like this is probably your best bet.

I tried following Alberts method step by step twice now, and everything seems to go right as far as making the SD card, but when I insert it into my 16GB Nook Tablet, running 1.4.2, and partitioned at BN, it will not reboot. The only way it will reboot is if I take the SD card that I made to root the tablet. It will reboot into normal operation mode. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I am really getting frustrated.

Try turning your nook off, insert sd card, then plug it in to charger or usb cord. Some model nooks have to plugged in to boot from sd card.
I finally got it to work. Everything went well. CM7 installed, looked great. When I installed Google Apps. It comes up to the registration screen, but when it tells me to touch the android, the tablet does not register my touch and I can't move past the screen
Finally got everything working. I don't know why I got all worried. Had to reinstall a couple of times and fix permissions. Just like always. I must say I really like CM7 compared to the Nook interface. Nice job Devs! Thanks for everyone's help pointing me in the right direction.

Hello, I would like to use some android apps on my nook 15 GB running 1.4.2 without rooting permenently. I need to make a SD card so I can revert back to my regular nook operating system. At age 70 the more I read the more confused I get, there is just too much information out there. Is there a simple list of instructions with no exotic extras suggested and starting with the 1.4.2 OS?

I viewed the video but it seems to be about restoring to the original software. I guess I did not explain well that I have an unaltered nook tablet and have done nothing yet. I need first to create a sd card to insert and boot to. My understanding is that I then turn off, remove the card and reboot to access the B&N software with no permanent change to my nook. Is that possible with 1.4.2?
Perfectly possible and exactly what you should do. I'll find a link in a bit, busy at the moment.
If you run CM7 from an SD card you can do a power on start to CM7 and reboot back to native nook. Booting to the SD version does nothing to the internals of the nook. The following address should get you to the development thread for CM7 alpha final. Follow the instructions for the SD version.

I suggest a Sandisk Class 4 micro SD card. Depending on how much material you intend to download, get an appropriate size card. I am using an 8 GB and I have allocated all the leftover space to the last partition.
Directions are easy. Download the file and unzip to get the image. Use the win32diskimager program to write the image to the SD. CAUTION here be sure it is the SD that you write the image to. Google Mini Partition Wizard Home Edition and download the home edition noted as freeware to reallocate the SD space. That is simple as well. Go to the bottom partition and move the slider to the right and then save.

Generally, if you follow the steps above (short of installing the Asian apps), you'll be fine. Easy 1/2 hour to 1 hour to go through the downloading of apps, OS, Root image, etc. to having a bootable Nook that's running off the MicroSD card.
Keep in mind that ROOTing the Nook (easy, doesn't hurt) is needed to prevent B&N from disabling your external MicroSD card CM7 OS boot in the future. (You can skip ROOTing if you want to tempt fate later on however....)
Keep in mind that Sandisk MicroSD cards are generally recommended for their stability, speed, and trouble free use. You can use other brands, but if you encounter an error with your new OS, use a Sandisk card instead.

This is only really necessary if you think B&N will push some update that will affect the current method used to bypass the bootloader.
This would imply a level of intelligence I don't think them capable of.

Did you get it figured out? It really is fairly straightforward once you understand what each basic step is doing. You can practice repeatedly until you get comfortable without doing any harm or damage.

I apologize if there is an answer to this somewhere but I have spent the last 3 days looking and could not find a clear answer. I have tried many different methods, SD cards and many many MANY attempts but I can not get my nook tablet to boot from the SD card. The closest I get is after I hold power and N to power up then down, insert the SD card and then power up (USB and Button get the same result). After the N screen I get a flash of the root screen but then the factory reset question. ANY help would be appreciated. My wife is going to kill me if I spend too much time on this! Thanks in advance!
What type and class of micro SD card are you using? I always have used emmc to boot, but it seems that a Sandisk Class 4 seems to be the recommended choice when attempting to boot from it. I also remember a issue along time ago when people would have to have their nook plugged into their wall charger to boot. Btw what ROM are you attempting to boot to? Also, whose guide are you following? Good Luck....

Those are 2 of the many I have used. I tried plugging the nook into the wall charger...no dice. I will try to pick up a sandisk class 4 today. Thanks for the help. I will let you know how the class 4 goes! *crossing fingers*
So I could not find a sandisk class 4 but i did use a wintech class 4 and still nothing. Just boots to the B&N os. I was thinking about buying a pre-made card but if the NT wont boot from the SD card I don't know if it will be worth it. Any other ideas?

If you are trying to make a CM SD card, you can find instructions/tools here.
It is tough for me to follow those instructions. Sorry guess I am just a noob I was able to make the SD card but the instructions on what to put where on the card confused me. Can you help me out?

I will start this reply off stating that I am rather noobish.
I've seen evidence that the boot sequence has been modified by B&N to kill this procedure. I am in the process of doing the same with my Nook Color BNTV250a. I think we may have to over-write the emmc rather than use the microSD if possible. I really don't know why they care so much. We buy their product, and we want to make it more dynamic...

I posted an overview of the process I used to build a CM10 v0.06 SD card using Succulent's tools here.
However, you can simply just download a CM10 SDcard ready-made image built by Succulent and posted here, and write it to your SDcard.

Have the same issue. I am unable to boot NC 1.4.3 from the SD card? Did anyone has any further instructions on how to achieve this or any alternate solution.

I'm new and I just installed CM10 on my tablet this weekend.
I had the same SD card issue.
Short answer for me is -- make the partition size of the SD card small in additional to the boot and lba flags settings and it worked.
I use 100-150 MB. Tried 300 MB and it failed.
I used an old 2G (class 1?) SD and a 16GB class 2 Sandisk, both behaved the same.
Nook Tablet had 1.4.3 installed and is about 9 months old.
To get my 1.4.3 Tablet to boot from sd I hold down the "n" when powering on. I let go of it before things really start going on on the screen. (5 seconds? I haven't timed it)
I have done all sorts of things from sd (rooting, repartioning, unrooting...). Some went well , some didn't at first, but thankfully there are guides here to get you back to where you started...
I am right now running CM10 from an sd card and it's performing amazingly well. You could always try that for a while! An almost fool proof guide here http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/ You don't have to mess with setting up partitions or anything. It's all done for you! Download, burn (and if you want to, espand one of teh partitions to fill up the card), pop it in and go!

If your NT is like mine, it will:
only boot from SD from a power-off state and upon insertion of a powered-USB cable
always boot into stock ROM if it's powered up via the power button
always reboot into stock ROM (even when tethered with a powered-USB cable)
If it does not boot from SD from a power-off state and upon insertion of a powered-USB cable, e.g.,
it gets stuck on a black screen then eventually boots into stock ROM, or
it boots straight into stock ROM without "hesitation"
then there is something wrong with the content and/or format of SDcard 1st partition, in which case check to make sure that 1st (FAT32) partition has LBA flag set and is set to active, and that the MLO and u-boot.bin are not corrupted (at least have the correct size in bytes) in the file copying to SD. I also found it helps to first copy the MLO and u-boot files then the rest of the files, since MLO and u-boot are to be loaded first, and it appears that OMAP only scans the first few entries of the partition-table to look for these two files.

I formatted it after to start from scratch, and now it cannot be detected. I haven't done anything really like this before, so I'm wondering if I should even bother risking the 8 gig card I use for music. I have the Nook Color BNTV250A as well.

What process did you use to make the bootable SDcard?
Can your PC/Laptop detect the card?
Have you tried using a disk partition tool like "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition" to see what's on the card?
I've seen multiple references to Nook Color and BNTV250A in the same sentence, but I believe that model number belongs exclusively to the Nook Tablet. I have an 8GB Nook Tablet with 1.4.3(pre-installed). I went through a lot of hassle with the SD card as well and what worked for me was getting the smallest size SD card I could find. I used a 2GB class 4 card. That worked well for me. On the boot process(from a powered down state with the SD card inserted) I started out by pressing and holding the "n" button and then pressing and holding the power button. I didn't release either until I saw the brown box on the screen so you might be releasing one of the buttons too early. Additionally I did not have a USB cable attached to my Nook during the whole process and it didn't affect the install in anyway. What I've seen with the USB cable attached is that a delayed power-on process is initiated once the cable is inserted. Maybe this defeats the "button press" sequence.

Hey guys.
I am somewhat a noob. I bought a brand new 8gb nook color from wallmart on black friday. I heard about how you can put CM onto the sd card and boot from that without altering the device itself. I have tried for HOURS to do this. I have looked up COUNTLESS walk throughs and done everything they say, done alternations, and used different cards ranging from 2gb sandisk (class 1?) to 32 gb sandisk this is a class 4. I've used winimage and burned the image to the card, then dragged over cyanogenmod and done this task in countless different ways. Every time I shut down the nook, put in the card, then re-boot, the nook does NOT boot from the card. It boots normal, then I can actually browse the card after it boots up. I have done it EXACTLY how it says here and read tutorials so its not a question of whether or not I have followed standard proceedure. My firmware version is 1.4.3. Ive searched online to this and to no avail. My sister bought the exact same one at the exact same time and it does not boot the sd either. I have done about 8 straight hours of research on this guys, so I'm no pro but I have a basic understanding of how it works now. My questions are this:
1: Did Barns and Noble put restrictions on the newest nook color or on the newest software version? And if so is there a way around this?
and
2: If NOT, is there an alternate way/installation onto the card that I can do (such as an image pre loaded with CM etc.) that I might be able to try instead of the conventional way?

i have read several threads. Installe Ubuntu on a laptop and have come to the conclusion.........I have no business rooting, or anything i hav tried several metods to try and restore my 16gb nt and have been unsuccesful. is there any body out there willing to try and restore it for me. i will pay all shipping and will send it with my 8gb class 10 card. I just want it restored to cm7 or something functional HELL even stock would be great at this point. I do not have the skills to do it myself. It has been bricked for over a month now. This was a device used by all of my family members and now they are all upset with me for ruining it. Will B&N take it back and do a restore? anything ANYTHING PLEASE HELP!
Can't you just start by telling us what you have tried?
Have you for example tried the repart.img card already? If so, what happened?
Edit: I checked you previous posts and see that you tried to get Adam's method going.
Before going through the trouble of sending the Tablet around, try the repart.img

In short
1. Download, extract zip and save the repart.img in the same folder as you keep your Winimage
2. Open Winimage from within that folder. (Do not "install" and run, just open from the folder!)
3. Choose the "repart.img"
4. Burn it to the card
5. Boot to the card (inserted in Tablet)and wait for green checkmark
6. Turn off, remove card and Tablet will reboot automatically.
If green checkmark doesn't appear after a few minutes and a red cross appears instead, then you're in trouble and nee to try soimething else. But let's hope it deosn't come to that!

Thank You! i have followed these instructions. i even started out with a new 8GB SanDisk microSD and a new usb card reader. i was able to successfully create the card. My 16GB NT does boot to the restore screen but I do have the red x in the corner the whole time. When it finishes, i get a the device will shut down in 5 sec. I have tried the re-boot without the card as well as booting with the power button and the cable. i am waiting for a fresh download of adam's file to try that agin. If that does not work I will move onto celtic's instructions.

Alright! I have returned to stock. courtesy of the AdamOutlerUbuntuTotalReFlash. The problem is the touch screen doesn't work. I will be attempting to restore to a previous cm back up from here. I owe more than thanks to so many people here. asawi, AdamOutler, Albert Wertz, Celtic, indirect. and all who helped. them. I have learned a bit in a minute and have a long way to go. My 16 GB NT isn't fully restored but, it's closer today than 4 -5 weeks ago!

I am getting an error message telling me that the nook has encountered a problem that requires a system restart. If this problem persists, please contact Customer Service
Just reset the tablet and it should load. If not put the repart SD card back in the device again.

I think what I am going to try is re-create and boot from the the AdamOutlerCard and see if that clears up the problem. The nook doesn't seem to recognize the sd card or the format? and will not boot to or from the sd card (CWM) . and then I will move on to Succulent's http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/...r-nook-tablet/ . At what stage of the recovery did you get this error message, e.g., during the process of initial sign-in to B&N?
o.k. I have achieved boot to SD card using sucullent's iamafanof cm10 image as instructed by asawi. my next goal will be researching and flashing the internals again. i suspect my initial problem resulted from having both cwm and cyanoboot resulting in the two arguing for permissions and rights. Additionally flashing the 10 touch which led to an unresponsive screen, which led me too trying to clear the "wrong" boot or mount and leaving me with only the cwm boot. patience!, clear thinking and help from all of you here got this device back in working order. Again I am extremely grateful for all the help!

Yes! Touch is working. I have not completed the registration for B&N yet. It seems that the updates that they push make it more challenging to root and / or flash to internal. I am just running CM off of an 8GB Class 10 micro SD. I don't want to do the B&N registration yet because I haven't 100% decided to flash to internal. Can the updates still be pushed even thogh I haven't registered? I am considering to keep running of an SD and get a 32GB class 6 card to do that. I would like to have the internal flashed because well let's face it the NT really isn't much to talk about until you. Unlock it's true potential. Question this process which I have followed here the repart and return to stock but running CM off the SD is that considered root?
I'm currently running CM 10.1 from an SD card and it does the same thing as internal boot. All information stored on the SD card with root privileges.

I can't see any reason not to register your device if possible. You can block updates even if you're running stock as long as you're rooted.
It's more convenient running from internal than from SD, but I can't say I noticed much improvement in performance. Stick to class 4 unless you already have the class 6 lying around.
Be prepared that there might be problems registering after running the Ubuntu restore due to serial number possibly having been wiped.

Alrighty then. I guess I will stick with just running off the SD card then. If I can't register then I will probably flash to internal. just curious why stick with class 4? Does the class 4 just run better or more compatible with the NT? How can I can confirm root?
SanDisk class 4 is the SD card most often recomended för NT. Runs fast and well and even devices that are fussy boot easily from it. The way data needs to be read for this kind of use isn't any faster on a higher class.

Is it possible or realistic that I can run a different SD card for different people using the tablet? i.e. using an 8 gig card with games and such for my kids to use. another card for my wife and then a card for myself. My fear is that the kids will eject the card or just not really know what they're doing and do something accidentally? (They are kids after all). My wife doesn't like the fact that I keep changing the configurations. Just overall giving everybody the ability to have the apps and configuration they want without encroaching on somebody else's preferences and hogging up all the space available on the card.

Yes that is possible. Just write the SDC version from iamafanof's page onto separate SD card. Recommended to use at least an 8GB Speed 4 microSD.
The other option is to use the profiles/users feature. It might be only CM10.1 builds that have the User capability. You can set up different accounts for yourself, your kids and your wife.
I have a 16gb Nook Tablet that has firmware version 1.4.3 and I would like to run one of the CM roms internally. I am thinking about trying to run CM10 because from what I have read it has finally become stable (please correct me if I am wrong).
Over the last couple of months I have been skimming through this forum reading thread after thread trying to get a grip on the process. I have a 8gb class 4 Sandisk micro SD card that I would like to use for this. From what I understand I do not need to root the tablet first if I am going to flash a rom straight onto it.
So does anyone have a favorite method for going from a stock Nook Tablet to CM7 or CM10? I also wonder whether it is easier to use Windows or a linux OS to do this. I have Ubuntu on my Desktop and Windows 7 on my laptop so I can do either one. Also, how do you create a clone or image of my Nook and SD card so that I can revert back to them if anything goes wrong?
Edit: Do I need to repartition the NT hard disk like explained here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23272909#post23272909 or does that no longer matter once the new Rom has been installed?

Since you're new to flashing ROMs you might want to use this

Its an SDC image. Just write to your SD card and you're good to go. Once you learn a little more you can internally flash. Flashing without knowing what you're doing may cause problems which could essentially reformat or erase internal partitions.
Edit: You can use whatever operating system you want. Ubuntu can read all your partitions though. Windows can only read some. But that probably won't matter if you're new.
