Hello, I would like to use some android apps on my nook 15 GB running 1.4.2 without rooting permenently. I need to make a SD card so I can revert back to my regular nook operating system. At age 70 the more I read the more confused I get, there is just too much information out there. Is there a simple list of instructions with no exotic extras suggested and starting with the 1.4.2 OS?

I viewed the video but it seems to be about restoring to the original software. I guess I did not explain well that I have an unaltered nook tablet and have done nothing yet. I need first to create a sd card to insert and boot to. My understanding is that I then turn off, remove the card and reboot to access the B&N software with no permanent change to my nook. Is that possible with 1.4.2?
Perfectly possible and exactly what you should do. I'll find a link in a bit, busy at the moment.
If you run CM7 from an SD card you can do a power on start to CM7 and reboot back to native nook. Booting to the SD version does nothing to the internals of the nook. The following address should get you to the development thread for CM7 alpha final. Follow the instructions for the SD version.

I suggest a Sandisk Class 4 micro SD card. Depending on how much material you intend to download, get an appropriate size card. I am using an 8 GB and I have allocated all the leftover space to the last partition.
Directions are easy. Download the file and unzip to get the image. Use the win32diskimager program to write the image to the SD. CAUTION here be sure it is the SD that you write the image to. Google Mini Partition Wizard Home Edition and download the home edition noted as freeware to reallocate the SD space. That is simple as well. Go to the bottom partition and move the slider to the right and then save.

Generally, if you follow the steps above (short of installing the Asian apps), you'll be fine. Easy 1/2 hour to 1 hour to go through the downloading of apps, OS, Root image, etc. to having a bootable Nook that's running off the MicroSD card.
Keep in mind that ROOTing the Nook (easy, doesn't hurt) is needed to prevent B&N from disabling your external MicroSD card CM7 OS boot in the future. (You can skip ROOTing if you want to tempt fate later on however....)
Keep in mind that Sandisk MicroSD cards are generally recommended for their stability, speed, and trouble free use. You can use other brands, but if you encounter an error with your new OS, use a Sandisk card instead.

This is only really necessary if you think B&N will push some update that will affect the current method used to bypass the bootloader.
This would imply a level of intelligence I don't think them capable of.

Did you get it figured out? It really is fairly straightforward once you understand what each basic step is doing. You can practice repeatedly until you get comfortable without doing any harm or damage.

Please help a noob out here. I know the answers are out there, but I am not sure which method is best to use. I am familiar with rooting on my android cellphone, but I am not so sure about the methods used to root the nook tablet. They seem a bit more complicated and I want to make sure I have the correct info well explained.
I would like to know the following:
Where can I find the thread concerning installation of CWM/Rooting and how to back up my tablet before I I do anything else? (I have learned this the hard way, once. Never again will I proceed before backing up so I can restore it when I screw it up)
What is the most stable ROM that has been developed for the tablet so far?
Where can I find the instructions on how to install this ROM so that even an idiot (aka, me) can install this?

(by basically removing the SD card and letting the Nook boot normally?) I have never used that option on any of my rooted phones. If so, that is probably the way to go. What do you recommend? I know it is a risk either way, but it sounds like running the ROM from the SD card seems safer.

Using this method by albertwertz allows you to put regular root, CWM, and CM7 (most stable CyanogenMod ROM so far) all on an SD card. He even includes step-by-step videos and does a good job explaining. His YouTube channel contains more videos of various ways to root, too.
If you want everything on your SD card and not have to worry about messing with internal, a method like this is probably your best bet.

I tried following Alberts method step by step twice now, and everything seems to go right as far as making the SD card, but when I insert it into my 16GB Nook Tablet, running 1.4.2, and partitioned at BN, it will not reboot. The only way it will reboot is if I take the SD card that I made to root the tablet. It will reboot into normal operation mode. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I am really getting frustrated.

Try turning your nook off, insert sd card, then plug it in to charger or usb cord. Some model nooks have to plugged in to boot from sd card.
I finally got it to work. Everything went well. CM7 installed, looked great. When I installed Google Apps. It comes up to the registration screen, but when it tells me to touch the android, the tablet does not register my touch and I can't move past the screen
Finally got everything working. I don't know why I got all worried. Had to reinstall a couple of times and fix permissions. Just like always. I must say I really like CM7 compared to the Nook interface. Nice job Devs! Thanks for everyone's help pointing me in the right direction.

The question: Locally atm I can get some 8 GB microsd cards in the class 4 (cheaper) or 10 variants. For making the root card, and also for making the R3 card is a class 4 card fine ? Or is a class 10 a far better option ?
I've done considerable reading and some vid watching so far and am gathering my materials to begin work on my NT

I recommend a Class 4 SanDisk card. SanDisk seems to be a brand that is pretty reliable in the NT.
As for the classes, a Class 4 should suit you just fine. All that a class number tells the consumer is the sequential read/write speeds (copying and moving files for example.)
The SD card attribute that we NT users should be looking at is the 4IN random read/write speeds. The faster this is, the smoother a ROM running from that SD card should be.
If you're more interested, you can test the speeds of your SD cards by using a PC program called CrystalDiskMark.
B&N Repartition ?

Considering running in to B&N real quick and doing their repartition before I get started. If I read correctly I should still be able to use the created microsd card to root etc. In particular was planning to do the R3 card at the moment.
Is that a worthwhile move ? Does the root open up all that protected storage anyways making the B&N repartition a moot point ? If I wasnt rooting I'd do this anyways. Does the repartition change what rooting options are available to me from others ? For example I see a number of options where they state that it works only for the 16 GB version and not the 8 GB version. If I do this repartition is my nook now considered in the 8 GB class when considering root options ? Or will it be considered in the 16 GB class always even with the B&N reparition ?

Okay, so a couple of things to say here.
Your 16GB NT will always have the 16GB rooting/custom ROM options, changing the partitions will not reduce your options (unless you manage to mess up the partitions somehow).
Whether you do a manually repartition and choose how much storage you want allocated OR you take your NT into Barnes and Noble, you will still be able to run the R3 card.
Barnes and Noble's repartition only frees up half of the internal data space which turns out to be a little less than 8GB I believe. A simple root will NOT open up any more storage space than before unless you repartition.
If you'd like to do the manual repartition, I can go find the link for you. If you're not comfortable doing that, you'd best head over to the local B&N and have them do it for you.
Error While Making Backup

I did get it to backup. I vaguely remembered reading somewhere about swapping to a different card for backup for size. So I tried another card and the backup completed. So looks like I was just running into a wall of not enough room on the card. For the life of me I just couldnt find that post or info again after that, lol. Yes I am a noob and thanks for bearing with me.
I've also successfully loaded / changed to a bunch of ROM's so far as well. Checked out CM7b, the default 999 on card, and then finally went back and did a basic root on my v143 backed up rom. I've stopped at the rooted v143 for tonight because of time and to ease myself into the changes.
So I'm mostly set so far
2 Questions:
1) The video states that NT Hidden Settings needs to be updated in order to gain the OTA blocker. However when I visit google play it doesnt show "update" as an option. And I dont see the OTA entries in settings that the video says I should see. I saw in another thread that someone noted this as well, but didnt see a reply.
2) On the video I see the version as CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4
In the R3 I created from the files current as of yesterday I see it as v5.0.2.8
Does that mean the version on my R3 is older than the one used in the video ? Or am I just misinterpreting the version numbers.

Was near B&N today and as per the previous post decided to just let them do partition and reinstall to save myself that step. And to have the option to backup my nook to stock with the already set repartition in case I want to go back in the future. They did the repartition and reset. She went through the update to v1.4.3 before I realized she was at it. However I read that this works with 1.4.3 anyways so didnt fret too much. So upon leaving and back at home the nook was all repartition and 'hunky dorey'
Used an 8 GB Scan Disk class 10 MicroSD card (was on sale and almost as much as a 4).
Followed the instructions and apparently successfully made the R3 Card.
Booted up into CWM fine without needing the power cord.
Menu'ed to 'backup and restore', then to 'backup', device goes through a lot of the process before eventually giving the error:

I have searched through the threads on this and in Development. Does the starting point for using this ROM need to be stock B&N or can I start from CM7 and flash this and have it replace the current ROM? One method is shorter than the other but if it doesn't get me to where I want to end up there is no point. Thanks (be semi gentle if I missed a previous reference that answers my question)

What exactly do you want to do?
I am currently running CM7 and want to switch to Alberts v4.7 ROM. I vacilate - primarily because of Netflix and other videos I download and watch - between the two options. I used his v4.6 prior to CM7 and didn't keep a backup so the process is more involved now.

As long as both ROMs can use the same kernel, you can flash over your current ROM to switch to the new one. Just be sure to use the proper ClockWork Mod flashing instructions.

1. I think OTA blocking was added to the app later on.
2. It could be that you're using an earlier version of CWM. I've used the first version ever released on my NT16 and haven't had any trouble.

Is there a way to gain access to the files, need to build my own sd cards as I have lost everything.
I have just recently (5 hours ago) purchased a 16GB Tablet, that I had them repartition at the store, which has version 1.4.2.
I've spent the last few hours reading this forum and watching videos and now know WAY more than I ever intended to know about this tablet.
Rooting, dual OP, CM7, CM9, ROM, R3, Restore, etc. etc.
Due to so many warnings I've read about, I'm a little afraid to mess things up.
All I really want to do is install games I already have on my computer to the NT.
There were a couple of threads talking about this, but they were dealing with version 1.4.1. Not 1.4.2. I don't know how much of a difference there is.
Can someone suggest the best way to install these games?

i'm pretty sure games need memory ( storage ) and lots of it. tell us how much of the microhcsd you have available. did they leave you with one or six and a half gig ?
Unless you have an android computer/tablet with games from the play store or some other android market, the "games" you are referring to are not as easily transferable to an android tablet like the nook. The games have to be rewritten/redesigned for the android OS.
As for many of the warnings you've read, they are mostly to protect the person writing the guide. I.e. if you somehow manage to not follow directions and screw something up horribly, they want not responsibility for your mistakes. Honestly, 90% of them time in my experience with Android tinkering, Occam's razor holds true: the simplest answer is usually the right answer. And in terms of Android tinkering, that answer is user error.
So if you can read and follow directions and do a bit of troubleshooting here and there, you will be just fine.
My advice? Start with a bootable CM7 sd card. Go from there.

After repartition, I was left with 5.91GB for B&N, and 8.00GB Other storage, plus 16GB SD Card.
Regarding games. All the games I want to use are all apk android games that I had from another android product.

Alright I'll try to address most of your confusion.
The bootable SD card essentially means you will not touch the current internal OS. You basically burn an image of CM7 to the card and when that card is inserted, the Nook will boot into CM7 instead of the B&N Android OS.
Rooting does not necessarily mean changing the internal OS. Because the B&N OS is Android based, and because Android is linux based, "root" is sort of the equivalent of administrative access on a Windows machine. It simply means you have full control of the device. Rooting the nook means the OS stays intact, but you can install the play store (Android market) and do all sorts of other things you are otherwise locked out of.
"Flash" is simply a techy way of saying install. When someone says "flash CM7 over the internal OS" they mean that you are installing CM7 (the custom version of Android that has been built) over the internal OS.
The safest thing for you is to create the bootable SD card of CM7 as it does not touch the internal OS. However, you can also create a bootable sd card for the custom recovery. From this custom recovery, you could then "flash" (install) CM7, CM9, or one of the other roms (custom OS) for the Nook tablet. It is also in this custom recovery that you can make a "nandroid backup" which is basically images of how your nook exists in its present form.
I know thats a lot of info. But honestly, before diving into this stuff, people should try to understand as much of that as possible. There are tons of resources out there that explain this stuff. Again, I suggest the bootable CM7 sd card as its the least likely to screw up. However, remember that should you go after the internal stuff, this thing is incredibly difficult to brick. Any mistake you make has likely already been made before and recovered from. So if something goes awry, don't panic.

Should you ever decide to go internal, i.e. flashing over the B&N OS, which IMO is the better way, its incredibly easy to return the device back to stock conditions should you ever need to (i.e. for warranty purposes or something).
I've done it myself just to make sure that its possible. And it is. Very easily.

I know these are stupid questions, I just don't know the right words to search for. Sorry about that. I know I can search for the two things you told me to do and they will probably come up. lol

It's fine, it's always better to ask first. Could save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Unlike lots of other users, you seem like you are willing to search and learn things which is always good!
You can regain the remainder of the storage after writing the CM7 .img to your SD card. To do this in Windows, you'll need to download and install either MiniTool Partition Wizard or EASEUS Partition Master. I usually use Partition Wizard.
Unfortunately, while using the CM7 SD ROM, you won't have access to your apps and books from the stock ROM, so you'll want to transfer them to your storage inside the SD ROM. So I recommend copying the files to your computer, then connect your NT running the SD ROM. From there just copy the files to your SD card.
i have read several threads. Installe Ubuntu on a laptop and have come to the conclusion.........I have no business rooting, or anything i hav tried several metods to try and restore my 16gb nt and have been unsuccesful. is there any body out there willing to try and restore it for me. i will pay all shipping and will send it with my 8gb class 10 card. I just want it restored to cm7 or something functional HELL even stock would be great at this point. I do not have the skills to do it myself. It has been bricked for over a month now. This was a device used by all of my family members and now they are all upset with me for ruining it. Will B&N take it back and do a restore? anything ANYTHING PLEASE HELP!
Can't you just start by telling us what you have tried?
Have you for example tried the repart.img card already? If so, what happened?
Edit: I checked you previous posts and see that you tried to get Adam's method going.
Before going through the trouble of sending the Tablet around, try the repart.img

In short
1. Download, extract zip and save the repart.img in the same folder as you keep your Winimage
2. Open Winimage from within that folder. (Do not "install" and run, just open from the folder!)
3. Choose the "repart.img"
4. Burn it to the card
5. Boot to the card (inserted in Tablet)and wait for green checkmark
6. Turn off, remove card and Tablet will reboot automatically.
If green checkmark doesn't appear after a few minutes and a red cross appears instead, then you're in trouble and nee to try soimething else. But let's hope it deosn't come to that!

Thank You! i have followed these instructions. i even started out with a new 8GB SanDisk microSD and a new usb card reader. i was able to successfully create the card. My 16GB NT does boot to the restore screen but I do have the red x in the corner the whole time. When it finishes, i get a the device will shut down in 5 sec. I have tried the re-boot without the card as well as booting with the power button and the cable. i am waiting for a fresh download of adam's file to try that agin. If that does not work I will move onto celtic's instructions.

Alright! I have returned to stock. courtesy of the AdamOutlerUbuntuTotalReFlash. The problem is the touch screen doesn't work. I will be attempting to restore to a previous cm back up from here. I owe more than thanks to so many people here. asawi, AdamOutler, Albert Wertz, Celtic, indirect. and all who helped. them. I have learned a bit in a minute and have a long way to go. My 16 GB NT isn't fully restored but, it's closer today than 4 -5 weeks ago!

i am pretty happy with my success so far. and it is all due to this forum. I haven't figured out how to fix the touch yet. I have tried to flash a few different things but no success yet.
Have you tried just running CM10 from sd card? I don't know if you can do that and restore original touch firmware, but it's worth a try!
The Touchscreen app is included, so it "should" work...

Download (first download under "Download", ending with SDC-IMG.RAR), extract and put img-file in your Winimage folder, burn to card, pop into Tablet and boot into sd card.
Open the Touch firmware app and go back to original.
Remove card and rebbot into stock and hopefully all is well now!
Since you don't actually plan to run the Tablet that way you don't have to expand the user partition on the card, just run it as it is!
Edit: FWIW, I went and tried to flash touch formware while running CM10 from sd-card, and it seems to work fine. I then took the card out a and rebooted to my "regular" (internal) CM10 and reflashed the touch firmware back to what it was.
(I have no need for 10 touch right now, so I keep it in original until I do),
So you really should be good to go with Succulent's (Iamafanof) ready-made CM10 (or CM10.1) card images!

I am getting an error message telling me that the nook has encountered a problem that requires a system restart. If this problem persists, please contact Customer Service
Just reset the tablet and it should load. If not put the repart SD card back in the device again.

I think what I am going to try is re-create and boot from the the AdamOutlerCard and see if that clears up the problem. The nook doesn't seem to recognize the sd card or the format? and will not boot to or from the sd card (CWM) . and then I will move on to Succulent's http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/...r-nook-tablet/ . I really appreciate the advice and all the help.

At what stage of the recovery did you get this error message, e.g., during the process of initial sign-in to B&N?
o.k. I have achieved boot to SD card using sucullent's iamafanof cm10 image as instructed by asawi. my next goal will be researching and flashing the internals again. i suspect my initial problem resulted from having both cwm and cyanoboot resulting in the two arguing for permissions and rights. Additionally flashing the 10 touch which led to an unresponsive screen, which led me too trying to clear the "wrong" boot or mount and leaving me with only the cwm boot. patience!, clear thinking and help from all of you here got this device back in working order. Again I am extremely grateful for all the help!

Yes! Touch is working. I have not completed the registration for B&N yet. It seems that the updates that they push make it more challenging to root and / or flash to internal. I am just running CM off of an 8GB Class 10 micro SD. I don't want to do the B&N registration yet because I haven't 100% decided to flash to internal. Can the updates still be pushed even thogh I haven't registered? I am considering to keep running of an SD and get a 32GB class 6 card to do that. I would like to have the internal flashed because well let's face it the NT really isn't much to talk about until you. Unlock it's true potential. Question this process which I have followed here the repart and return to stock but running CM off the SD is that considered root?
I'm currently running CM 10.1 from an SD card and it does the same thing as internal boot. All information stored on the SD card with root privileges.

I can't see any reason not to register your device if possible. You can block updates even if you're running stock as long as you're rooted.
It's more convenient running from internal than from SD, but I can't say I noticed much improvement in performance. Stick to class 4 unless you already have the class 6 lying around.
Be prepared that there might be problems registering after running the Ubuntu restore due to serial number possibly having been wiped.

Alrighty then. I guess I will stick with just running off the SD card then. If I can't register then I will probably flash to internal. just curious why stick with class 4? Does the class 4 just run better or more compatible with the NT? How can I can confirm root?
SanDisk class 4 is the SD card most often recomended för NT. Runs fast and well and even devices that are fussy boot easily from it. The way data needs to be read for this kind of use isn't any faster on a higher class.

Is it possible or realistic that I can run a different SD card for different people using the tablet? i.e. using an 8 gig card with games and such for my kids to use. another card for my wife and then a card for myself. My fear is that the kids will eject the card or just not really know what they're doing and do something accidentally? (They are kids after all). My wife doesn't like the fact that I keep changing the configurations. Just overall giving everybody the ability to have the apps and configuration they want without encroaching on somebody else's preferences and hogging up all the space available on the card.

Yes that is possible. Just write the SDC version from iamafanof's page onto separate SD card. Recommended to use at least an 8GB Speed 4 microSD.
The other option is to use the profiles/users feature. It might be only CM10.1 builds that have the User capability. You can set up different accounts for yourself, your kids and your wife.

Now, I was wondering how to upgrade this version of Android to say, Jellybean or Ice Cream Sandwich. Could someone explain these instructions to me clearly? I really want to do it, but I need clear instructions, as I am not that high-tech.
I also want a way in which it will not affect my barnes and nobles apps and data.
Help would be very appreciated! Thank you!

Well you don't just "upgrade" to Jelly Bean. The method you used is rather old. CM10.1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2 is currently the newest version available. Since you're new I suggest using a SDC image http://goo.im/devs/succulent/acclaim/cyanogenmod/image/cm_acclaim_10.1_21APR2013_HD_SDC_IMG.7z
All you need to do is write the image file to an SD card and you're good to go. Use win32diskimager to write the image file to your SD card.
The root I did boots from the internal memory...so I do not have to unroot my Nook and do your method? I can just burn the image into my sd and insert it in?

Yes. Everything runs off the SD card and not your eMMC (internal memory). If you want to unroot your tablet the easiest thing to do would be write this image file to an SD card and plug it into your nook.

It's a repart image that will restore stock 1.4.2 rom.
As for the CM10.1 SDC ROM when you write it to your SD card it creates the partitions for you instead of you making them with a partitioning software. You may expand your DATA1 and SDCARD partitions MiniTool Partition Wizard (you'll see what I'm talking about once you write the image file.)

After I unroot, won't I get over the air update to 1.4.3? So is this new root you are telling me to do going to work for 1.4.3?

You can keep your internal rooted stock rom if you want, I was just suggesting you could use the repart image which deletes your partition and rewrites stock 1.4.2 right out of the box. This blocks over the air updates, so your nook won't update to 1.4.3 (you don't need it anyways because it only blocked rooting).
When you put the repart image SD card into your NT it will show a screen saying "Installing New Software" then a green checkmark will appear. Take your SD card out and it will start to Install New Software. Once it's done you'll have a fresh out of the box Nook! (kinda)
Rooting is simply the process of giving a device "administrator privileges" or root access to change all files. The new ROMs come pre-rooted so you don't need to root your device at all. When using the SDC CM10.1 image it will create the 4 partitions on the SD card for you (and you expand them later for more app space.)
When you write the CM10.1 image file to your SD card then put it in your nook. It will boot Cyanoboot and will start "SDC Boot" which will boot your ROM. There is a 0.01 % of you bricking your device during this process, so you are safe.

So just to make sure, it is ok for me not to unroot and turn my nook into stock 1.4.2? It will work on 1.4.3? And if I do not unroot, will this use up alot of battery when I put in the Jellybean ROM via SD Card? Can the Nook Tablet be able to handle Jellybean well?
Also,the SD card I used to root my nook into the old Gingerbread was a "Patriot 32gb Class 4". I already fixed up the SD card so it is back to 32gb again...can I use this type of SD card for the Jellybean root? I do not have a Sandisk.
The repart image takes your NT back to stock 1.4.2, from which you should be able to upgrade to stock 1.4.3.

This is exactly what I needed. I tried looking around and either a link didn't work or I couldn't get something else to work. Now I just have to figure out how to open up some space on it. Seems to only allow me to use a quarter of it. More searching tomorrow! Thank you to the OP for posting this also! Quick question, if I remove the SD card will that remove cm10.1 from the nook? Not sure if it's on just the SD or internal. Oh and one more question how do I access the Barnes and Noble part now? Mainly just the book part. If I can't I can always covert to .mobi and continue to use my kindle app. Thanks again. I foresee me having lot's of fun with this.

If you remove the sd card you'll boot into the BN system again and get full access to everything there.
To get more storage space on the card you can use for example Mini Tool Partition software (that's the one I use, but I know there are other free ones available as well), and change the storage partition to use up all the unallocated memory on the card.
