[Q] s2 firmware doubt - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi today i checked my s2 frimware update with kies it shows new firmware available
and it shows PDA:KJ2/PHONE:KI4/CSC:KJ1(AFG)
can any one tell what these letters describe and which version is this
is it gingerbread or ICS
because recently i read that s2 got ICS update via KIES so please tell me
and how to update as iam a beginer in this process

Gingerbread.
There is no ICS update with Kies.

thanks but check this link
dailymobile.se/2012/01/02/samsung-galaxy-s2-receives-android-4-0-ics-via-kies/
here they mention that ICS update update available plz confirm

This was mentioned in this thread the other day (some other European tech blog) and is bollocks. There is a rough chance it might be gettable in Kies test mode apparently, but it's not a stable/final release for all users. Personally speaking, I'm dubious about it being available even in Kies test mode.

Does FOTA actually work??

Sorry for asking a simple question but even the o2 gurus don't know.
Do updates come via ota or do you HAVE to use kies to get updates??
Or is there only specific updates that come via ota? Ie gingerbread updates come via ota but touchwiz/Samsung updates cone through kies??
There seems to be conflicting info on the net.
Currently have unbranded s2 on o2

Kies FOTA has yet to be used by Samsung .
Samsung apps updates come OTA via the Samsung Apps widget .
jje
If I remember correctly, Samsung never licenced the OTA capability, so while you will see the Software Update in settings, you won't get any joy.
Any official updates will appear via Kies.
FOTA is a service provided by google, a paid service that is. samsung doesnt pay

love the phone, had to jump through a few hoops to get it work through linux/ubuntu as well.. Hence the FOTA update query as i dont go near a windows pc that often.
Anyways an update is needed, after emailing samsung online support team (god knows how long it took me to find this) i received this back
"Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the
following assistance.
Regarding your query, kindly note UK does not support yet OTA ‘over the air’ updates and you can kindly
check our website for further and latest updates. We would like to inform you that our engineering’s are
working on releasing a firmware over the air update for the Galaxy S II ‘GT-I9100’ but it is still not available yet;
however, any news on this matter will be made public through our website so kindly keep checking our
website for latest and further updates.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and
we will be more than happy to help."
if i know engineers... this may be a long * infinity amount of time
They started FOTA in sweden a few days ago for SGS2
There are several reports that this works well. You simply go to settings->about and manually check for update.
They probably launch soon in other countries as well.

This is also confirmed in Finland. First update I believe we've had since the phone was released..
This is great news for me because as a Mac user Kies does not do firmware upgrades. It will tell you the current and the new version, but no option to update... After seeing this for weeks I pulled out my thinkpad who's sole purpose is Kies.
New version of Kies came out, updated, but some driver would not get installed.. so I uninstalled, downloaded the new version and installed. Still did not work so decided to install the windows updates.. Since that was taking forever decided to kill time looking at XDA.. so I found this thread. Figured it would not work but what the heck...
Checked for software update, downloaded, installed. Done, in 10 minutes.
Good thing too as my "Kies" PC fails to boot after the windows updates......

Sounds great, I guess Samsung has released an OTA update for the "NEE" region regardless of the specific country then. If I'm right OTA should work in Denmark and Norway as well, assuming you're using stock firmware though...
So are these OTA's being delivered by Samsung or by your carrier??

This is done via the Samsung account (you need to create one when searching for udpate the first time). So these are delivered by Samsung at least in that sense.
But also carrier specific firmwares in general are released by Samsung (via Kies).
FOTA Didn't work for me. Kies is not loading.
I will stay with 2.3.
t-mobile (austria) got FOTA update today http://fota-dn.ospserver.net/firmware/MAX/GT-I9100/FW-20120418-89510.bin ? strange version date ? for galaxy SII (bin file is a zip archive with delta_ files...)
Yup...updates over the Air FOTA is real
But you can update your phone firmware via Kies as it is considered to be more safe...

hi, got some information about fota device register. (http://pastebin.com/byVGYzbb) only question is how to get the OAUTH_CONSUMER_SECRET, think it must be stored somewhere on the device or included in some library...
hints welcome
edit (21.10.2012): found some password and user id in wssdmdatabase.db (table profile) (some data is unchanged after factory reset, but [*nonce] is changed)...

Hey NDNESH !!! ODDLP7/DDLP8 !!!!!!!!! Has anyone tried it? There seems to be no queries on this so I assume that no one has tried it or there are no problems with it !!!
I really want to go for ICS.
1). Have I to ROOT it after this ?
2). My Kernel version is [email protected] #2. Is this compatible with the XXLPQ/ODDLP7/DDLP8 that I am going for ??????
Please help as I am COMPLETELY NEW at this.
Hi,
Is there any way to upgrade the UAE firmware with official ICS India firmware through kies? I really want to know this as don't want to root or use ODIN for my phone.
NO
odin doesnt require root and its as official as KIES yet better than Kies...
Do you mean to say that after upgrading with ODIN I can still get firmware updates through KIES?

Galaxy S II ICS upgrade error

Hello everyone.
So basically im a total noob at this sort of stuff and though i did find one similar thread, it wasnt of much help.
Anyhow, i got a used S 2 off a mate here in Pakistan (it has an orange logo on it). It works fine but when i connect it to Kies to upgrade it to ICS it says firmware upgrade not supported.
Please id appreciate it alot if you could help me out with this in some detail.
Thank you.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
kies will not support it because it may have been flashed with a firmware that is not out yet in Pakistan.
When you upgrade with out using kies or from another region there are changes in a few files that kies will not recognize thus saying the firmware is unrecognized.
Current official ics is still new and only a few areas have the upgrade on kies, the rest of the the world may not see it until the end of the year or early next year.
If you want to upgrade to ics wait a month or so to allow current ics developers a chance to review and modify the official ics files. Then you can flash it yourself.
While you are waiting it will give you a change to read up and understand flashing techniques.
You need to flash it using odin
Odin tutorial here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
And use this ics firmware:http://skywanker.net/roms/intratech...9100_SER_I9100XWLP2_I9100OXELP4_I9100XXLPQ.7z

OTA or Odin

Hi, I picked up an sgs3 the other day. The firmware on it is XXLF2. I was just wondering what the experiences were with regards to OTA update? Is it recommended or would flashing the latest LG8 fw for UK via Odin be better?
Thanks for any advice.
One of the reasons why it might come in handy to restore a previous update could be due to the fact that the new update will not be optimized for our phone and waiting for the release of a more stable version, use Odin may serve us to go back. A very recent example is the first update to Android 4.0.3 on Galaxy S2 where there were several people who wanted to go back to Gingerbread ... Of course, another reason could be that we want to load a firmware later, but that in our country has not yet been made available ... see Notes Galaxy and the German ROM which runs the network.
But Odin is not only original Samsung firmware to load, but also allows you to load ROM cooked in order to have more personalized and optimized.
Odin's software runs on Windows PCs, and lets you do the above, but now we see how the program works.

Nice1 thank you devid801. I've used Odin to flash ROMs on my sgs1 but the OTA update on sgs3 has me interested Suppose I could always flash via Odin the latest FW if OTA FW isn't the latest.
Thanks again mate.
we say that the telephone operators are slow to release updates, even compared to the parent, so if you do not want to wait using odin! read a guide before, and you always make a nandroid backup before making any operation. ..

Odin is beeing used in official service and repair centers to flash samsung firmware
As always two paths for ease of use one via Samsung Kies or OTA .
OTA will probably fail on rooted phone .
Join XDA flash stock firmware as and when you want .
My view is if you want to stay with Samsung /official path then do so but its the attempts to mix and match that lead to trouble .

Thanks jje. I think i'll stay stock for now but see what update OTA offers me Saying that, XXLF2 fw does not seem bad so far.
Will look to find what the differences are between LF2 and LG8 fw.
Thanks for all the feedback.

I have recently flashed my Orange GS3 to XXLF2. I'm not getting any OTA updates post flashing and i know there is an update that gives you the option to auto aujust brightness on the drop down. Is this normal after flashing? Or has something gone a bit wrong?

You no longer have Orange firmware .
You no longer have phone codes that match any upgrade .
Their is no upgrade for your phone model
Plus all the other usual answers .
Choice flash roms from XDA or return to Orange for an update .

[Q] Installing JB 4.1.1 and Baseband Version + CSC

Hello guys!
I have Galaxy S3 I9300 GSMH.
It's unbranded, i made a research in the forum and it's supposed to be a factory unlocked phone. following the coment "But as such there is no restriction to use any ROM for any country if your device is unlocked(carrier restriction free)" by dr.ketan in http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1801022
My actual firmware installed is the UBBLG2. It's running ICS 4.0.4.
So, here is the thing, I need to know if I can stall any Official Firmware from Samsung with Jelly Bean 4.1.1.
1. What Official firmware should I install?
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4? Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Looking at these site and post we know the lastest firmware is I9300XXDLIB. Should I go with this one?
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Last thing. OR should I wait for the 4.1.1 release to this baseband version I9300UBBLG2 ?
Take care guys and thanks for all your help.

YES
1. What Official firmware should I install?
Only one JB official the Polish release .
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
If you want to or have network problems .
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4?
You can but why //
Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
No
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Yes no updates
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Use root from XDA only see the INDEX.
Last thing. OR should I wait for the 4.1.1 release to this baseband version I9300UBBLG2 ?

Thanks for your reply JJEgan
so to make a complete picture we got.
1. I can install JB 4.1.1 Official Firmware Polish Release.
2. I don't have to change the CSC. That must remain untouched.
3. Why will this affect future updates if it is a Official Firmware used on a Factory unlocked I9300? so I won't ever get updates for bug fixes and improvements? How will I handle that?
And
4. JB is supposed to be released on the international Galaxy S3. Why do you say it's never coming to my baseband? being this a international factory unlocked.
5. I've seen too many people in the forum having issues installing JB in their Galaxy S3 like battery drain, Wi-Fi issues etc. That's why question #3. Will i have these issues too with no bug fix updates?
Thanks

Same way as you are now updating via XDA .
And
4. JB is supposed to be released on the international Galaxy S3.
It is being rolled out .
Why do you say it's never coming to my baseband?
Baseband is nothing to do with firmware .

Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best .
Or read and learn and flash stock rom from XDA ,

Thank again for your help, I don't want to bother you, but you make me feel confused.
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS ."
But you do not clarify Why this official firmware from Samsung does affect future updates. I mean the Reason. WHY?
And then you do not answers my question and just told me "Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best ." even when you said before "will not be released its ICS ."
If there is something else i should know please point me in the right direction, i just want to know and learn more to be sure before installing because it doesn't make sense installing JB if you wont ever get updates from Samsung or android for bug fixes and improvement updates.
Sorry if I'm bothering you, don't take it personal.
Repeat you need to read and learn .
Update path official via Kies or OTA OK .
No problem whenever the update is released for your phone you get it .
Alternative via XDA and flash stock rom on day of release no waiting or custom rom .
Example official JB you let us say six weeks wait .
XDA has stock JB released for Poland you can install that .
But you may then lose your official upgrade path as the codes no longer match as you do not have official firmware for your phone .
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS >> no sorry you are confused .
Official Kies and OTA upgrades are not part of XDA .
BASICS SGS3 I9300 International Only .
