Since I've been on smart phones, I've moved all my music to those and shunned my now broken iPod away.
I've had issues with the original Droid's headphone jack, but what Droid owner didn't? I was able to deal with annoying static though, and simply forcing it closer to the contacts by sliding a piece of plastic in there helped a lot.
When I got my RAZR Maxx it was so much better. Once I found out how to get my bass back, I was in love. I was a bit worried about having a similar issue as with my Droid though as I listen to music with the phone in my pocket with a lot of movement. I'm usually riding bike after all.
I haven't had much of an issue for a while now, but recently things have turned south.
While I was on GB, using Skullcandy Ink'd ear buds, the slightest little movement of the plug could stop my music's playback, no matter what app I was using, (tested in Winamp, Pandora, My Music, and Power Amp) and eventually it would start launching the Voice Commands app. Other times, I could move the plug as much as I wanted and it wouldn't do a damn thing but play my music, which is exactly what I wanted.
I recently upgraded to ICS leaks and froze the Voice Commands app with Titanium and succeeded only in having the music stop as if I had unplugged it.
Once my gf killed my ear buds, I upgraded to Skullcandy Heavy Medals which seemed to fix the issue out right.
Once again though, I am having the same issue as before. I can get set on my bike, ride for a while listening to music fine as can be. Once I stop for any reason, if I move my leg at all, there's a good chance the music will stop as if I had removed the plug...
I know the plug is not damaged, and I've not done anything major to the jack to damage it.
Is there anything I can to do help prevent this? Any ideal ways of removing any lint that might be in there?
I don't really have time to take off my glove, fish my phone out, and press play again at 30 MPH in traffic...
This RAZR is the only phone I've ever had problem with lint and dirt getting into the headphone jack. I used air from a compressor, and a small spring, and just twisted it around until I got it all out.
Not exactly responsive to your query (about the headphone jack), but have you considered bluetooth stereo earbuds like these? You need to follow that link to Amazon and see all the pictures before you reject this flat out. You can wear these inside your bike helmet, while the bulk of the device will ride around your neck, below your helmet. My best friend has them and loves them. They have ridiculously long battery run time. The sound quality is good (acc. to my friend). If you were connecting by B/T, there would be nothing to plug into the headphone jack.
Not the solution you were looking for, but might solve your problem.
I've got an aux input in my car, and today when I tried plugging in my GSIII, I got met with a faint but annoying whistling sound underneath my music.
It stops if there's no sound being sent over the wire, but the moment a notification (or music) starts playing, it comes up.
Car worked fine with my DX, and still works fine with my friends' iPhones, but I get the stupid sound with my brand new galaxy siii. Oddly enough, it works fine with headphones.
any ideas guys? I'm kinda stumped.
Search ground loop isolation. You are getting dirty power to your phone.

none
Do you have the phone charging through the cigarette lighter? You can get ground noise from there, and it will be transmitted through the phone to your stereo.
Hm. Let me try again without it charging, but that's strange. Why did my old DX not experience this?
Assuming that's the issue - will a different cable solve the problem?
edit: So I checked the phone without plugging it into the charger. Still get a whistling noise. It's really more like a high pitched hum. I notice that if I don't plug the plug in all the way it doesn't happen (but I think I only get one channel).
I'm getting the same thing, and it's driving me crazy. At first I thought my brakes were going bad in my car!
I've tried different audio players and apps, but it still always get the noise. The phone is not charging, and I did not get this with my old captivate either.
Any ideas?
Doesnt happen in my Porsche. I'm using Bluetooth audio though.

Thats strange. I will get that when charging, but only while nothing is playing.

I am having the same issue. First time experiencing it though; never heard it with the iPhone, HOX, or NS
I'm using a line in cable, and when i jiggle it, i can hear the noise change tone at the same time. I have a feeling it might be because it's a regular stereo cable and the microphone combo jack on the phone is not working right with it. But that's just a guess.
It's pretty annoying and its making the phone unusable as a music player.
Happens in my Lamborghini (Dodge Caravan) when using a MP3 player. Usually, if I run my hand down the cable it clears as though it's some kind of static build up in the cable.

try flipping the cable (putting the aux in side into the phone and the phone side in the aux in) it happens to me sometimes and if I flip the cable it clears it out I couldn't tell you why though. also make sure there isn't any dust in the ports or on the cable ends.
That noise you hear is most likely due to the electrical system in the car. I rent cars all the time for work and never know the shape the electrical sys is in so to resolve the issue I bought a Kensington Cable from amazon and now have CD quality sound from any music app including pandora & spotify.
Hope this helps.:cyclops:

Unfortunately, my cable is RCA on one side (L+R channels split) and regular 3.5mm on other.

Not sure what you mean by "the electrical system" and the "shape" of it. Could you clarify? As I said, I have no problems with other devices in this car.
I would usually suspect something wrong with the car, or maybe a ground loop, but I can plug in my Galaxy S (Captivate) or iPod with the same cable, same everything, just switching out the phone, and the noise goes away.
The way the noise cuts in and out between songs, and when I close the music app, it seems to only happen when the audio chip is getting a signal or is being energized. This is making me think that it may just be a noisy chip :crying:
I was on conf call with SGS3 plugged to AUX, no power charging was going on. And either noise canceling didn't work, or noise was getting in thru AUX line to receiving end. I didn't have problems listening, but ppl on the other end complained, and I had to mute the mic.
:crying:

sorry! Could you speak up please? I couldn"t hear you over the sound of your e-penis
I am having the same problem. My HTC Thunderbolt never had this problem. Same car and cables, I get the hissing and popping until I play something. Then it goes away until I stop the music and then it comes back again. Weird and disappointing.
The problem comes from the 4-pin (TRRS) audio jack in the GSIII combined with presumably bad grounding in my 2007 Honda Accord, or the Aux adapter.
I fixed it with a simple DIY solution. I cannibalized a TRRS headphone jack and bought a TRS (3-pin) port from radioshack. I clipped off the jack with a generous portion of wire, then stripped them and cleaned them from their insulation (they are covered in insulating dye).
I connected 3 of the wires to the TRS connector, and taped the whole thing up. No more hum.
Also known as Road Noise. Where the power cable and audio input are too close to each other. Electrical current emits a small magnetic field which will hinder audio quality and promote road noise from the alternator.
This is a very typical senario in car audio install, when you run the power cable and rca right next to each other.
this buzzing noise happens to me every time i drive my car for the past 3 years:
solution: turn down the car volume. if you keep your car volume half-way, then you wont hear it as much, or you wont hear it at all.... you can make the phone volume as loud as you want though. also, as you accelerate faster, the noise gets louder. watch, try it.
Hello, as my title states, my S3 (Verizon) works wonderfully. The only issue I am having concerns playing music. It doesn't matter if the song is stored on the phone or on an external microSD card. It doesn't matter which media player I use (I prefer Poweramp). Whenever it is plugged into a charger (wall or car) and I move or touch the phone physically, the music cuts out for a brief second. The player icon in the notfication bar also fades away, then comes back quickly. It's almost like I pause and unpause the music quickly.
I have tried rebooting the phone and blowing the microUSB port with compressed air, but that doesn't work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
It plays a sound if you're connecting to a charger or usb doesn't it? From my experience, any media (music, radio, in-game sound) briefly mutes then resumes playing when using connector. Don't know how it'd work if you set it up so it doesn't play the sound

Sounds like a faulty charger. It would explain why it cuts off when you move your phone.

It only does it when it is already connected, not when I am in the act of connecting it.
I do suspect that it is something with the charger, however it does it with multiple chargers....Although, come to think of it, I buy cheap ones from Amazon, haha. I bet that is the problem. I wonder why that is. Maybe the charger is making my phone briefly think it is in dock mode.
Anyway, thanks for the replies!
I just got an htc one and I use my headphones while riding my motorcycle to work. I've only used it twice and both times my music skips around erratically. I'm using google play with music saved on my device. I came from a galaxy s3 that didn't have this problem. Does anybody have any experience with this and a solution? The weird thing is, I can't recreate this when sitting on my couch.
Edit: using stock headphones. I tried using my old s3 headphones and they wouldn't work at all.

Sometime when you slide your headphones into the jack you can inadvertently scratch the protective paint inside the jack. This metal on metal connection causes your phone to react erratically. Especially with the vibration of your motorcycle. There's a couple ways to remedy this. One is to place a small piece of electrical tape to cover up the exposed metal inside your phone jack. I don't really like this method becaue it could dislodge and fall into the headphone jack and prubably cause more issues. I'd suggest you go to the play store and download a program called "WizDroid (No Headset Control!)." It will block all signals from your headset so that your phone will act normally again. Only downside is hat you can't your headset controls to pause/skip tracks or answer calls.

thank you for you reply and i will try that. i have an update. only happens when im on my motorcycle. i can sit on the couch and move the jack around in the hole (phrasing) and there is no skipping or any problems. i can get on my bike and go the mile on the street to the freeway with no problems. but once i get up to speed (around 50mph) it starts to skip around. i am going to try using the headphones in a car to see if it happens when i get up to speed then. if so it might be a location thing. but i really doubt that.
update: rode to work today with an old set of skullcandys that do not have a mic and only has one side working and i had no problem. i find this to be really weird, but, what ever. i can get a new pair of no mic headphones. i never use the headphones to talk anyway.
Long story shorthone dropped in water, immediately removed, rice dried and now turns on, charges and works fine.
HOWEVER there is a bad stutter sound of media and it clips in and out making music unbearable. This happens with the speakers and with the headphones so I can't just buy a replacement speaker. This effect only happens with music and videos, not ringtones. Is this Motherboard damage? So far I've found nothing that improves it.
So Youtube and internet youtube both sound flawless, it's just music applications that skip and clip songs...how?
Well turns out it was partly the usb connector. Even though it charges when I transferred songs over, they became corrupted and thus wouldn't play correctly. Using Airdroid fixed this so...yeah. If anyone is curious if that can happen, there's your answer. At least music works now!
