Yet Another "I got My prime, This is my Assesment" thread - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Ok, so i finally got my prime today and can FINALLy write something objective about the tablet. so here it goes.
Form Factor. I think the Prime excels at this. Feels, lite, sturdy and solid. If you like an ipad2, then you will like the form fo the Prime. I know some complain about the edges, etc... but quite honsestly the the ergonomica are ABOVE average.
Now, one downside is the location of the charging port on the tablet. I totally understand why its there (for the keyboard dock), but if you are lying face down in bed holding the table to watch netflix, or play a game, you cant help but wonder if you rest the tablet to much on your bed, wil you damage the power cord. Again, the placement is understandable, and I am not sure if there is a good way to fix this.
Screen: The resolution and details are again, better than expected. tehre are a few games that really make the screen shine... and hi def movies look awesome on it (with a good media player). Yet, my screen has some light bleed (only on black screens). My annal side gets really bummed about this, but an average user will definitely nto pay soo much attention to this. I did also notice, that the screen seems to get more fingerprints than my old HP touchpad. again, minor things that really have no substantial meaning.
Processing power: This is a tough call. If you compare it to otehr android tablets, tehre is no contest, Prime is the best. But I cant help but notice that the IPAD 2 feels snapier. This might be corrected with ICS, but for now, i have to say Ipad has a slight advantage.
GPS: Guys, i wnt even bother... everyone knows the facts. All i can say is that whne I bought it, i never said to myself "wow, i am getting this tablet because of the GPS". As far as I am concerned, this is what i consider as a perk that did not materialized. At least i know it KIND of works... but if you were buying a tablet cause of the GPS... then I am definitely ok a different wavelength.
WIFI: this is my big gripe. I see how the bars get affected by me jsut walking 20 steps from the router. oddly enough, I do not loose connectivity, and netflix still streams at high quality with less thann 50%... but it is still discouraging HOW sensitive that gps bars at. I cant help but wonder, if this is hwo ti behaves in a controlled environment (like my house), what can i expect in an airport or a starbucks
BT: This will be addressed later. One of my buying purposes, was to hook to a tv and sue as a gaming device witha bluetooth controller (like captain readbeard in the gamestop commercial). I cant help but wonder, if its true that Bt adn wifi dont mix to well, how is that going to transtlate for my gaming experience.
SOUND: Oh boy, WHY COULDNT ASUS but 2 damn speakers. Its really hard to play this in MONO audio, whne stereo is soo easily available!!!! I am surprised there are not so many complains about this. Sure, there are Bt speakers, headphoes, etc... but still, an average user carries the tab alone my itself most of the time... so lack of stereo is a big let down.
Conlusion: So far today, thsi si my overall impression. it is a great tablet, but tehre are some things that really make me question if ill keep it or not. In fact, i think having the small lightbleed is sort of a blessing, cause I can keep the tablet for 45 days (i am a best buy silver member), and see how i cope with it... but if somethign better coems along, or ASUS perfects their manufacturing process, i can go in 45 days, exchange it (and claim either faulty gps or light bleed), and getting it replaced.
Hope this review is somewhat objective and helps someone out (and pardon my spelling/typing skills... or lack of)

Felt like I wrote that myself I feel the same way about everything you mention. I do notice browsing is much Snappier with Opera and the keyboard is much more responsive with the Go Keyboard application with tablet extension. I have a feeling I am going to need a case of some sort with a built in speakers the Primes speakers are... dare I say it.... a absolute Joke my epic 4g touch phone blows it out of the water.
PS I can't wait for ICS!

this sounds like someone trying to be funny..lol. a decent impression though.
it is true although wifi bars are sensitive and might show lower signal strength, it still performs as of the signal strength was at Max. it is odd. this can be corrected thru software tweaks once developers make a kernel for it. they can change those kinds of values n such. Diamondback mentioned exact same issue happened with Desire HD and they put in a modified kernel and it fixed it. Everyone is hoping ICS is the savior..lol. it will come with better and updated drivers. it will also Do everything better in general since it has better coding. the clock is ticking and ICS will be here soon.

I couldn't have said it better. My Garmin handles all my GPS needs.

Asus claims it has stereo speakers but they just come out of that one side... If it was really mono you would be able to tell the difference especially with music.
I installed the Volume + app and have come to really enjoy the speakers now.

I saw some tear-down pics and it has 2 speakers in there. Not 1. So it is indeed stereo, unless the pics are not of the prime (highly unlikely).

If your worried about the charging port being on the bottom while in bed can't you simply turn it upside down so the charging port is on top? Are you using an app that will not rotate?

Doesn't the iPad2 have one speaker also? I don't see anybody complaining

I take my Prime with my to school, I go to a tech school, They have wifi there and so far I get working wifi in every room I use in the building. They have a lot of repeaters though so I'm not sure how good of an example this is. Hope it eases at least some of your worrying about how it performs in the real world.

lol, you go me there... i just rotated the screen, and that problem is solved (feel so retarded cor that). Ill trythe speakerapp next. One more thing... anuone know where is the screen calibration option?

Idk about you calibrating that. But you can test it with Antutu tester. (That's what I used to make sure everything was working for me

Can someone give me a little direction on how to set the volume control plus app?

go into the themes and app section of Prime. then find thread titled Volume Coontrol or something. in there is the link to marketplace to buy app. but if you read description in marketplace, the creator says you can get the same paid app for free from his website. he lists his site on there. VolumeControl+ does wonders for your speaker.

Fair review, i just checked the wifi at the wifes work, i sat outside in the parking lot and scanned the available networks side by side with my droid charge and tfp, both has the same number of networks and same signal strength, i then logged on as a guest and did a few searches, both were comparable with return times, i know a crappy test but i figured it was a fair real world scenario for me, also atm the bt seems to work well, im currently tethered with pdanet tablet and getting good speeds
Good post op, i liked the break down

Yes, it is supposed to be that way. Both speakers are on the same side of the tablet. Would be nice if they were on both sides, but rest assured, there are two speakers in there and they sound damn good.

Well, like i said crappy test but i sit there and scam the wifi while waiting for her to finish up ,lol, that said yeah all the sound is coming from one side , sounds nice and clear but only coming from the audio port side , also you should check the othere thread on here where someone has taken thier tablet apart already , it looks as if there's 2 side by side speakers in here so that probably explains it ...still kind of an odd mono stereo effect when listening and watching in landscape and not very bad at all when listening in portrait, try rotating the tablet when listening to music, does the dock have speakers at least? Haha

what would you like to know about the transformer prime?

Hello all,
So i finally got my hand on the transformer prime, and are ready to test the hell out of it.
Im planning to make a video review like the first transformer.
Before i do it id like to ask around and see what people would like to know about the tf prime aside from the obvious thats already been addressed by most review sites.
Im not a developer so dont ask things that are too technical.
Questions ill be able to answer are like what video format does it play, does it get warm and things like that.
And please dont ask me about the release date, i have no idea,
Bought mine from taiwan computer exhibit.
Ill collect the info and post thevideo hopefully by tonight.
*Sneak previewed: the first reaction when i opened the box, WOW!!!
Edit: I'm sorry guys, making the video takes a little longer than I expected, I'll make sure to post it by tomorrow night.
PS. Please read the post before reply so i can organize the qs more efficiently.
Edit: the videos are up on YouTube, I feel like I didn't cover half as much as I'd like to say,
Will do an update video, sorry guys

Edit 3.

Video 3 is up, covers things like gaming, super note and onlive
Edit not sure which time:
video 4, hdmi out to 55inch display, demo of 1080 High profile mkv video clip (played with MXplayer) + Onlive arkham city with bt keyboard

a quick note on standby battery life,
I charged it fully last night, unplug it from the charger.
Wifi is connected to my home router and set to never turn off. (actually everything in setting if left as Out of the box)
went to bed, and this morning , about 8 hours in standby. Battery reads 98%.
I don't have a good way to test the battery life, but it doesn't feel any shorter than the ipads. So it's definitely more than
the 5 hours claimed by the Verge.
EDIT:
I just got some preliminary results on wifi performance.
3 meters from the router, nothing in between
download upload
laptop 18mb/s 2mb/s
TF101 15mb/s 3mb/s
Prime 12mb/s 2.5mb/s
6 meters from router, with wooden wall in between
download upload
laptop 14mb/s 2mb/s
TF101 9mb/s 2mb/s
prime 7.8mb/s 2mb/s
it appears prime does have a slower wifi speed, not dramatically though,
I'm suspecting the metal chasis is causing some sort of interference.
but keep in mind these are preliminary result and I haven't repeat it nearly as enough
to confirm the result.
And from what I've heard in Taiwan they've already made progress in the issue and the wifi
performance are hugely improved. (I'm pretty sure mine is the first batch)
Edit (again):
By going even further away from the router with more obstruction in between,
the results became obvious.
about 15 meters away, with concrete, doors, windows in between (outside of my house to be exact)
wifi signal shows one bar (for both TF101 and prime)
download upload
TF101 3.5mb/s 1mb/s
Prime 0.67mb/s 1.25 mb/s
Despite from the wifi result, I don't really feel any drop in wifi speed with the prime, perhaps due to the faster page rendering speed with the prime. In a user point of view, couldn't really notice the difference. Reliable sources in Taiwan indicated that they are aware of the issue, and good progress has been made to improve the performance of the wifi signal. So my guess is by the time you guys receives your units, the wifi strength would be much stronger compare to mine.
I know this might seem a little biased, but I just have to add that the PRIME is without a doubt the best piece of electronic device I've used in years.
***by the way, never experienced the SOD (sleep of death), woohoo!! hopefully it is gone for good.
Best,
A.

The top, where the camera is gets warmer than before ( i was charging it at the same time though)
But never to the point thats uncomfortable.
I think ipads 1,2 still have the best scrolling in the world,
Because it heavily related the software. Its smoother, but notipad smooth yet, lets hope ics can deliver that, and i think it will.
-How well does it handle flash content? Try playing a normal flash game like Boxhead and see how well it runs and how well the dock (if you have it) emulates a keyboard.
-If you got the grey version, is it too purple? (Been getting mixed opinions regarding the purpleness)
would love to see some quick handwriting on ezpdf. Not sure if the original has any lag while doing that but thats definitely something I will be using the prime for
Why can the prime not handle simple text inputs in the browser? With Tegra 2 it did this in any browser, could u test this for us further?
And what about the checker board patterns while scrolling?

Could you please do an in depth look into the camera/ quality of pictures in low light, normal light, sunshine etc., videos in full 1080p and give a comparison as to how it stacks up with something like iphone 4s since they seem to have very similar cameras.
Also can you sample the sound from the device, is it by any chance tinny/ has low volume.
Check the wifi performance if you can, there has been this problem with a few reviewers.
Flash performance on websites would also be nice to see.
Play a 720p/1080p video off a SD card I'm very curious if there would be noticeable lag?
BTW thanks for answering our question while we impatiently wait for our prime (^_^)
Any chance this thing has an FM radio?

One of the major reviewers tested this on the highest quality format. It was said that there's no lag at all. Plays just as fast as if you stored the vid. Inside internal storage.

OOoooo... nice =) Because i am planning on getting a 64 sdxc hopefully a class10.
Can you guys link me to that review i haven't read anything on that yet.
How is the position of the speakers effecting the sound experience? Does it feel like you're hearing from distance despite the loudness? Do the speakers have a proper headroom regardless?
Many thanks.
What is the sound/music quality like via head/earphones? Is the Prime able to drive high impedance headphones? And does the stock music player support FLAC files?
Thanks for doing this! I'm sure I'm not the only one that's envious of you getting the Prime so soon
Is the 40 pin connector on the PRIME the same as the TF101?
For example, the USB to 40 pin connect cable the same?
If you have the 40 pin adapter to USB from TF101 will that work?
Thanks

The Positive Transformer Prime Thread

So, I've seen lots of posts with complaints or concerns about the prime but let's have a thread to share our positives about it. If all we see are the negatives or the couple of bad tablets no one will want one. Sooooooo, I'd like to hear what you guys who do have it like about it, what did Asus do RIGHT?
Please share your thoughts!
UPDATE:
Include the model and color in your posts please!
I like how snappy is. It does not lag like the xoom or the tab. I'm very happy with it. I also noticed that battery life is longer than the tab. Gotta love that fifth core.

Everything working great so far on my end, including GPS.
I'm still trying things out, though.
No more checkerboard display on web browsing, no typing lag in web. Snappier than the originali love mine. Sound is better than tf just wish it had two speakers. Great battery life. Can't wait for ics and optimized programs! Wouldn't trade it in for anything else!
I like that I got a tracking number for mine lol.

Love my Prime! GPS and Wifi work fine, ULTRA snappy, looks/feels good. Had it out at my wife's family Christmas and it was THE topic of conversation.

i love how thin it is, how it feels in hand, the screen, how snappy it is in general (especially since it's still running HC), the camera is quite decent, and i really like the small touches asus added to HC to make it more useable.
i'll love it even more if asus delivers us ICS in a few weeks.

I've gotta say, I can't fathom how so many people can have so many different opinions of the Prime's speaker. To some it's terrible, tinny, low-volume, etc. To others it's amazing, full, full of base, and loud.
Is it that peoples' expectations are so difference, are they listening to different sources, or is there some variation in hardware that's causing this discrepancy?
I might have two Primes to compare to each other this week (supposed to be getting one from both Best Buy and Abt), and if I do I'll be sure to compare them side by side to see if they're different. Because this is driving me batty...

I think some people are just using poor quality songs to test out the speaker. I used a 320kbps mp3 streamed over wifi from Google music, and it sounded amazing. The speaker hit the high notes and even the low ones. I tested it out with dubstep, too, so I was really testing all the ranges the speaker could hit when I tested it. No distortion of any kind, and the bass was easily heard (but sadly not felt, lol).
I played with one at my local gamestop and loved it. It felt and looked top notch and got my wife's approval as well. Just playing shadowgun was enough to convince me. Scrolling was great and much better than my modded VS Gtab. I get mine on wednesday and hope i don't have some of the manufacturing problems (Screen bleeds and no starts) that some are having. If i don't i know i will love it!
Aside from possible GPS issues, my prime has been stellar. Really an awesome device.

More than very impressed with my device. I can clearly see why reviewers said this is the best/most powerful tablet out now. I would reccomend it to anyone in an instant! haven't been able to set it down yet. plus I'm loving this thumb keyboard. makes typing very easy n the skins for it look great. slideIt is good also but as soon as I got this thumb keyboard, it was a wrap. this is a must have for any tablet. I'm sure writers, bloggers, students, etc...will love the ease of use and speed typing with thumb keyboard.

I agree with you here I feel like most things should get much louder then they do especially notice if you play youtube videos some do not get very loud at all with volume at max... seems to be max volume is really 40-50% and you should be able to turn it up another 50% but its just not there.

I've noticed that on my phone and even on my computer. It seems sometimes it's youtube that has that problem.
So, hopefully by now alot of you have had a good week to play with them Primes. Have things continued to work well?
I've been on delay from amazon for a while now for the 64GB version and I just wanted to make sure that they can indeed hold up. I really want to like the Prime but I also want to make sure that there are good, non-problematic primes out there.

Initial impressions of a German Prime

Okay guys, here we go with some impressions of a non american prime.
Today, I got my 32GB gray Prime + the gray dock from the first german batch.
I have to say that I never owned a tablet myself before and I currently use a Desire HD as my development phone.
Hardware:
Good:
Build quality is perfect, period. On my Prime there is absolutely nothing i don't like about it.
It's super thin and not too heavy
Power and volume buttons are nice, but not metal
Keyboard dock build quality is on the same superior level.
The screen is absolutely awesome, super bright, perferct viewing angels and the colors are super good too, no yellow hue for me.
The speaker(s) are hands down the best thing I've ever heard on any mobile device. They are loud, they are clear and they have bass . I tried to completely cover it -->not possible with my hand, it still sounds the same
No comment on batterylife yet, it's my first charge
Camera is really good for a tablet, the pictures look much like iPhone pictures look. Really good when zoomed out and pretty strange when zoomed in.
The screen is very easy to clean, no comparision to my phone.
Bad:
Wifi is pretty weak, I can clearly see that it is way weaker than my DHD (it actually doesn't even see my network where my phone connects without any issue)
I won't say anything concerning the actual speed because I am not used to Wifi devices having a better speed than 10Mbps.... One word though: it's slower than my phone.
After the .33 update Wifi speeds are really good, 25-30Mbit/s
It's pretty sad we got only one speaker, you clearly notice the sound comes only from one side
The charging cable somehow feels really cheap. It also doesn't have any kind of snapping thing which prevents unwanted removal of the plug. The connector is like a USB-plug, you plug it and you un-plug it without any button or so to press. The charger itself feels okay.
Keys on the dock could need a bit more travel distance
Screen is finger print magnet, but I actually havenÄt compared this to other tablets
Software
Good:
Hmm, yea what to write here...?
HC runs smoother on the Prime than on my girlfriends Xoom...
Asus Supernote is a pretty decent note taking app. If they add palm rejection it's the best note app out there.
Haven't tested much of the other Asus apps so far
Ah, the Asus quicksettingsmenu is cool too, it's fast and just works
Bad:
HC just sucks, it's not well optimized at all. There are bugs random slowdowns and hangs everywhere
My GPS is broken too (more on this later)
Touchscreen sucks (I put this to software because I don't think it's hardware related). The touchscreen isn't always working properly. It's the same "ghost touching" reported earlier. Also it sometimes just doesn't register at all. You need to tap 2 or even more times.
Touchscreen working perfectly after the .33 update, no more issues at all.
Usage
I love the keyboard, i actually work a lot with that tiny mousepad I never saw me working with a mouse on android
Battery (still first charge of Prime and dock) seems to be pretty good, I am currently on 11 hours of constant usage (webrowsing, a movie, listening to music playing games, etc)
using the touchscreen while docked is a bit hard because the device is very top heavy, you need to hold the dock while working with your finger on the screen
You need to activate the ASUS onscreen keyboard in order to get a QWERTZ keyboard while using the dock. Otherwise it's a QWERTY. That's the most annoying thing I found so far
The "GPS-issue":
Now I had the chance to actually test it myself, so here are the results.
My Prime doesn't lock onto satellites as most others here too.
It barely sees any satellites at all. Where my phone sees 10 sats (all with good reception) the Prime sees from time to time exactly one with near zero reception...
I really think this is software related (or maybe I just want to believe that? ). Read why:
In my opinion we have so many issues with the Primes because ASUS didn't intend to release the Prime with Honeycomb at all.
I think they developed this device only with ICS and once they realized that they can't finish ICS they hurried up to slap HC on it.
Unfortunately the actual testing of the software was more or less forgotten or better suspended due to time constraints.
If I am right we will see a nicely running more or less issue free ICS soon. If this is not the case ASUS really screwed up this time...
Conclusion
All in all I think the Prime is a awesome device which will get perfect once the bugs are gone. I am still happy with my Prime and I'll keep it.
If they fix the GPS and the touchscreen I got a perfect device for my use. Weak Wifi is not really a problem for me
Update
Okay a little update mainly about battery life:
I used the Prime all day now until it reached 2% I got about 9 hours of constant heavy usage, including webbrowsing, downloading lots of things, watching a movie, listening to music playing games, etc.
Then i plugged the fully charged dock and continued using the Prime the same way as before. Currently I am near 12 hours of usage, 23% left in the dock and Prime got recharged by dock to 31%.
I guess the Prime will go up to about 40-45% (all while using it), before the dock gets empty.
So far I am pretty impressed by the batterylife. (remember this is the first charge for both Prime and dock)
See also the added section about the usage.
Second Update
I just got the .33 OTA and it installed fine without any problems.
The touchscreen is super responsive now, no more issue at all in this case.
Wifi seems to be faster too, GPS hasn't changed at all (as expected)

Interesting point you raise and something that I was thinking about also, maybe the drivers for the GPS were intended to work only with ICS (I don't know enough to comment on this) and that's really why we're getting such shoddy reception. However the fact that ASUS are now removing all traces of the device having GPS in the specs list does suggest that it may well be hardware related.
I'm expecting a statement pretty soon from them.
Thanks for the short review! Do you have the 64GB Prime?

It's pretty sad we got only one speaker, you clearly notice the sound comes only from one side
The charging cable somehow feels really cheap. The charger itself is okay
You need to tap 2 or even more times.

great first impressions. I also believe this has the best sound out of any mobile device I've heard before. in the themes and apps section there's a thread on an app called Volume+. its a volume booster that uses a speaker mod to accomplish this. let me tell you, IT WORKS GREAT. my prime now is wayyy louder than stock and has more bass to it also. I confirmed this with a decibel meter testing the speaker mod off vs. on. definitely a dramatic increase in sound and quality. has various profiles and even advanced ones so you can use equalizer if you feel up to it. that thread had link to marketplace for it. its a paid app. but he also says, in description, you can get that same app for free from his website. which he lists in app description also. just thought I'd spread the word as the sound now is unbelievable for the most part.
glad to hear you liking your Prime. hopefully it'll serve as a great developement tool for you also.
Thanks for the review. Surprised that the WiFi isn't as strong as the Desire HD I would have thought it would be. Maybe this can be improved, certainly sounds like it would be better with optimized ICS as well.

The whole thing is just an incredible failure by Asus. They obviously rushed and keep rushing an unfinished product to market in order to beat the new ipad launch in January. Its nothing more than a big FU to the consumer. Return for refund, dont let them get away with this BS.

Lucky you. Got mine yesterday, yes same batch in Poland distributed by Euro RTV AGD, and can confirm that the GPS reception is of very low signal. Long time for first lock, and looses the signal very easily.
Side by side comparison with my TF101 clearly suggests problems with GPS of the TF201.

It's actually a good thing, so if you trip on the cable, the device will hopefully unplug and not crash.

a bluetooth handset for z ultra because yo dawg, the htc did it.

It's called TK2 bluetooth handset. it costs $20 on ebay ATM.
I've just bought one fron ebay. The sound quality is ok, battery life(from what te page says) is pretty good, also it rings when a call comein.
What's bad: The only ringtone it has is the famous iphone one...
I've not decided yet, if i ever saw a more ugly headset then that ... but its defniatly going for the first 3.
Beside that, why should i carry one that is as big as an iPod?
If the Smartphone is already a big one, the rest dont has to / should not be.
it's big. but good find

Currently i am using one of these "Bluetooth dialers". They are tiny and work ok - the audio quality is nothing to rave about, though.

Waiting for the sbh52. The only thing i am disappointed about the shb52 is lack of aptx support. Strange that NONE of the Sony Bluetooth headsets have it. Wonder why.

I know you can do that with the SBH52 but I'd quite like a lightweight option that you can just keep on a lanyard etc.

I use the Bluedio BD100 - http://dx.com/p/bluedio-bd100-1-0-oled-usb-bluetooth-v2-1-dialer-headset-white-3-5mm-jack-127233
A discussion around it on XDA itself - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709473
Interesting, it has one feature that the SBH52 does not - the ability to sync the phonebook. The BD100 copies over all the phonebook entries, and allows you to scroll through and dial out from the device itself. The SBH52, from what I have read, can only redial recent calls (which even the BD100 lets you). I am surprised why Sony left out such a useful feature.
Apart from that, the BD100 has vibration and a single high-pitched ringtone (which will scare you the first time you hear it!). You cannot change it, but luckily you can turn it off. Though there is a model from Satechi that, apparently, comes with 8 ringtones.
Call quality is ok, though a bit muffled. Music quality is mediocre, especially if you are used to aptx headsets like the HS3000 from Samsung or the HTC BH S600.
I have been using it for over six months (previously with my Note 2) and have not encountered the issues others have in the XDA thread. Been stable and reliable for me.
The best part is the size and weight. Worth the price i paid.

Sure it have interesting features, but going size, weight, features and price wise you can go as well for a full phone, like a Nokia 105 with longer talking time and standby time as well as better audio quality with Nokia quality and the all for about $20.

I'm surprised at that as well. I hope they release an app that rectifies that and at least lets you access the entire phonebook.
could someone please explain to me why anyone would want a device like this?
so many nice, small, BT headsets, with great sound, and many even ring when you get a call, so why would you want something this big, ugly, with horrible sound, when a nice BT headset is so much better in every way?
thanks!

I don't think the sony sbh52 is in any way ugly. It's just like a normal Bluetooth set as it allows you to plug in headphones but it also lets you take calls without the headphone connected.
I agree some of the other units which are basically like a small phone are not by cup of tea. At that point I just as well carry a normal small phone plus a tablet lol
I agree the sony unit isnt really ugly, but a couple of the other ones I saw really were..
it just seems weird to carry "2 phones" around with you at the same time...or am I missing something?

Well I can't speak for anyone else but yes by getting the Z Ultra Im trying to combine the phone/tablet experience and only have to carry one device.
Having said that I won't mind carrying the SBH52. But the point is if I forget it I can still make calls without it. :good:
I thought that is what my mindset would be when I bought the GN2; I ended up getting a Note 8.0 a couple of months ago, which is the perfect tablet size, IMO..Can you put the sony in your pocket when you wear "normal" pants, not skinny jeans, or, will in not fit in any pants pocket? It looks narrow and long, like it would fit in loose pants pockets..

I think it will fit in normal pants pockets but definitely not skinny jeans. What I did was buy a cheep TPU case off ebay for $3 so I could check out the dimentions and try it in my pockets first
Coming from a note 2 I know what you mean. I don't have much use for a full blown tablet though and in the past I've handed down both an ipad and nexus 7 to family members. I just want a large screen mobile thats not a pain to browse or consume media on while on the move. For anything other than that, serious browsing or for real productivity I'll switch to the laptop.
Even then I find Im far more productive when trying to do real work when using a desktop PC. The laptop is a macbook pro so its no slouch, but simply being sat at a desk using a large screen monitor, full sized keyboard etc.
Anyway I got off track there a little lol.. I think the note 8 is a good size, pity they made the side bezels so big though. The phone functionality on the cellular model is sometime id like to see enabled on all tablets.
my wife has the note 10.1 tablet, which I find too big; we both had original Motorola Xooms, which were also 10 inch, and I thought was too bulky..The 8 inch tablet really hits the sweet spot, IMO..
problem is, if I get a 6.4 inch phone, and have an 8 inch tablet, are these devices too similiar too each other?
my tablet is a wifi model, but I make VOIP calls with it, and can text with it too; wifi is everywhere, and where it isnt, I just tether to my GN2, so connectivity is not an issue..
My wife is already warning me I am not getting the Sony, so, until someone is selling it here, and I can take her to a store and show her how cool it is, I have to control myself! She thought I was nuts getting a Note 1, then she wanted one; when I got a note 2, she said I was nuts again, but now she has one too, so there is definately a pattern here I can take advantage of!

Theres a big difference in screen area between 6.5" and 8" I actually wish the Ultra bezels were smaller and they had stuffed a 7" screen in there.
!! Seriously it would fit in almost the same footprint, just a couple of mm wider. The note 2 will be the superior device if you use the spen a lot for note taking etc. The Ultra note taking is nowhere near as good as on the Note 2 or Note 8, but its ok for infrequent use.
Me and the mrs both had note 2's. She smashed the screen on hers so I bought her a mega 6.3. Forward thinking so she could't moan about me buying the Ultra lol

SBH80 headset with APTX support

Hey has anyone tried out the new Sony SBH80? Looks pretty cool and good to see it supports APTX too! Would be keen to hear how well it works with the Xperia Z Ultra.
It's got mixed reviews on Amazon so far (link) but it's only $115 delivered so a pretty good price for a premium wireless headset.

Hello "julz", I have posted a few comments on this threads about the SBH 80 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2690241 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2673683), why don't you take a look at them and, after that, if you want to ask me something else feel free! Cheers.
Thanks for the links! I'm still after some more feedback on how well it works whilst running. Do the weights flop around and how about the neckband? Does it constantly shift and feel like it's about to fall off? Have you had the intermittent playback issues? I presume you're using a Z Ultra?
Thanks!

Thanks for the links! I'm still after some more feedback on how well it works whilst running. Do the weights flop around and how about the neckband? Does it constantly shift and feel like it's about to fall off? Have you had the intermittent playback issues? I presume you're using a Z Ultra?
Thanks!

Good morning "julz" - well, for me it's morning time -, first of all, yes, I have been using the headset mainly with my Z ultra and, occasionally, with my BQ Edison tablet; by the way, as expected, they work proprely when connected to both devices at the same time (for exemple, watching a movie on the tablet, the headset will give me a signal that I have an incoming call and it is possible to answer it without problems). As you may already know, I bought this headset mainly for sports purpose and I am quit satisfied with it. Regarding your other questions, I have to emphasize that I am not a picky kind of guy regarding headset's, having said this, I don't note any flops with the lateral control units or neckband. I don't use to have the sensation that their are about to fall (at least on my 60 to 90 minutes runs) and I just refit the neckband occasionally (nothing that bothers me). Regarding the intermitente playback issues, I have shared my experience in the two threads that I suggested you yesterday. All and all, with me, I think those issues are somehow wi-fi related, but those are far from being a deal breaker for me because those circunstances are very particular (read my postes). Finally an update about the battery autonomy, if I recall it right, Sony advertise that they can stream 6 hours of music but, a couple of charges ago I got more than 7 hours of juice! Not bad! I hope I've been helpfull. Cheers.
I have this one from years:

They look fine but, in my particular case, I needed some kind of water resistant headset. Untill now, I had no problems with my prespiration with the Sony one's. Cheers.

Dude, just buy the Jaybird BlueBudsX, you will be glad you did. I researched forever for aptx compatible bluetooth headsets. I tried the LG Tone+ HBS-730s and ended up returning them. The collar was so annoying, and I bet the SBH80's will be as well.
The BlueBudsX are the most low-profile out of every bluetooth set on the market, just the buds and a flat cable you can tighten as much or as little as you like. They don't use aptx but do use a proprietary technology they call "Shift." I'm no audiophile, but for day to day listening, while working out, etc, they're great.
Just my opinion.
Absolute trash, these things
Started out good...but after using them for a few days, started experiencing persistent signal losses...even from 2 inches away. The worst bluetooth device i've ever owned. And no, they're impossible to run with. Don't believe the hype.
Does anybody have these?

Hello, besides the persistant signal losses that you report, I don't get why you say they are impossible to run with... I run very confortably with them from 30 minutes to two hour runs. :-/

\i have same problem.
it driving me crazy!! test it with other devices and got same problem.
if i keep the phone beside the hands-free it will work good as soon as i put my phone in my bag or on table it starts loosing connection!!!!
Does anyone who has the sbh80 found a source of replacement ear buds/grommets?
I lost one and called Sony who said they don't sell replacements. They're a different size to others, so I can't use some from some crappy other headset.
my previous post got autocorrected and the negative became a positive
so, I CAN'T find any earbuds which fit my SBH80 amongst my collection of old headsets
