SBH80 headset with APTX support - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hey has anyone tried out the new Sony SBH80? Looks pretty cool and good to see it supports APTX too! Would be keen to hear how well it works with the Xperia Z Ultra.
It's got mixed reviews on Amazon so far (link) but it's only $115 delivered so a pretty good price for a premium wireless headset.

Hello "julz", I have posted a few comments on this threads about the SBH 80 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2690241 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2673683), why don't you take a look at them and, after that, if you want to ask me something else feel free! Cheers.

Thanks for the links! I'm still after some more feedback on how well it works whilst running. Do the weights flop around and how about the neckband? Does it constantly shift and feel like it's about to fall off? Have you had the intermittent playback issues? I presume you're using a Z Ultra?
Thanks!

Good morning "julz" - well, for me it's morning time -, first of all, yes, I have been using the headset mainly with my Z ultra and, occasionally, with my BQ Edison tablet; by the way, as expected, they work proprely when connected to both devices at the same time (for exemple, watching a movie on the tablet, the headset will give me a signal that I have an incoming call and it is possible to answer it without problems). As you may already know, I bought this headset mainly for sports purpose and I am quit satisfied with it. Regarding your other questions, I have to emphasize that I am not a picky kind of guy regarding headset's, having said this, I don't note any flops with the lateral control units or neckband. I don't use to have the sensation that their are about to fall (at least on my 60 to 90 minutes runs) and I just refit the neckband occasionally (nothing that bothers me). Regarding the intermitente playback issues, I have shared my experience in the two threads that I suggested you yesterday. All and all, with me, I think those issues are somehow wi-fi related, but those are far from being a deal breaker for me because those circunstances are very particular (read my postes). Finally an update about the battery autonomy, if I recall it right, Sony advertise that they can stream 6 hours of music but, a couple of charges ago I got more than 7 hours of juice! Not bad! I hope I've been helpfull. Cheers.

Dude, just buy the Jaybird BlueBudsX, you will be glad you did. I researched forever for aptx compatible bluetooth headsets. I tried the LG Tone+ HBS-730s and ended up returning them. The collar was so annoying, and I bet the SBH80's will be as well.
The BlueBudsX are the most low-profile out of every bluetooth set on the market, just the buds and a flat cable you can tighten as much or as little as you like. They don't use aptx but do use a proprietary technology they call "Shift." I'm no audiophile, but for day to day listening, while working out, etc, they're great.
Just my opinion.

Absolute trash, these things
Started out good...but after using them for a few days, started experiencing persistent signal losses...even from 2 inches away. The worst bluetooth device i've ever owned. And no, they're impossible to run with. Don't believe the hype.

Does anybody have these?

Hello, besides the persistant signal losses that you report, I don't get why you say they are impossible to run with... I run very confortably with them from 30 minutes to two hour runs. :-/

\i have same problem.
it driving me crazy!! test it with other devices and got same problem.
if i keep the phone beside the hands-free it will work good as soon as i put my phone in my bag or on table it starts loosing connection!!!!

Does anyone who has the sbh80 found a source of replacement ear buds/grommets?
I lost one and called Sony who said they don't sell replacements. They're a different size to others, so I can't use some from some crappy other headset.

my previous post got autocorrected and the negative became a positive
so, I CAN'T find any earbuds which fit my SBH80 amongst my collection of old headsets

stereo bluetooth headphones

Alright so I had a pair of motorola s9s for about 3 weeks before sweating on them at the gym broke them.
Does anyone know of any decent bluetooth headphones that are reliable (battery doesn'd die after a month etc. etc.) that work well with the G1?
I have the first generation Motorola bluetooth stereo headphones, the HT820. I originally purchased them back in 2007 to use with my t-mobile MDA (HTC Wizard), and they worked well then and they continue to work now. They are much bigger than anything Motorola has out now, but they do work. I currently have Cyanogen's ROM on my G1 and they did work with the original cupcake ROM from T-Mobile. These headphones also have a built in mic so you can take phone calls.
Hope this helps.
I recently purchased the Samsung SBH500 headphones. I have only had them for a few weeks so I cannot tell you long term reliability but I have really enjoyed using them. I have taken them on a run a few times and have had no trouble yet. I have read a few reviews of people complaining that they are unconfortable and ears get hot when working out with them. I have not experienced either. I have found these more comfortable than other around-the-neck sets. The ear padding is a little thick but it sort of muffles the ambient noise. I have found the audio quality for music and calls both outstanding. I would recommend these if you were looking for over the ear headphones.
You should try contacting Motorola about your s9s. When researching BT headphones, I seem to remember reading that Motorola knows that this is an issue. Perhaps they will swap these out for you. Good Luck!
S9-HD
I thought the S9's are supposed to be sweat resistant. I have a S9-HD and they seem to be holding up fine. I've been using them on runs and bike rides for a couple months now. I do admit though that not much sweat gets to them cuz most of my sweat evaporates as I run. When I stop moving, I start pouring sweat, which is when the headphones get hit the hardest. They're still working great.
I haven't tried the jaybird bluetooth headphones. They're supposedly water and sweat resistant. They sound like they're the bomb. I'm tempted to get a set. Here's a link for more info:

Hey guys thanks for all the replies!
I actually just ordered a pair of samsung sbh170's (if i remember correctly) they didn't have to many complaints besides being to small.
If they don't work i will definetly be checking out the sbh500's they look really nice, and i might get a pair for non gym use too. ( I never knew internet radio at work could be so addictive.)
I checked out the jaybirds before i bought the samsungs that should be coming in a couple days. They had mixed reviews on amazon, just like the s9's, and cost around $100-$120 so i think i'm gonna keep my distance from those, I'm a college student lol.
As for the s9's I didn't have the HD's, I had the older versions, which were apparently less sweat resistant than the new ones. I took them appart and it looks like the main circuit board got covered in sweat (there is discoloration).
I had initially thought it was the battery, but that would be hard to replace. The battery in them is a no name most likely chinese peice of crap, if anyone else is having a problem with the battery you may be able to retrofit a rechargable AAA batery in ( i played around with a voltmeter and the old battery appeared to be 1.5V's) but that would take a little bit of time and patients, I only paid 30 bucks for them, and used them pretty consistently for a month (pretty much every day at the gym too.)
If I had paid $100 at best buy then I would be more upset. I really liked the form factor on them and they were really nice to use at the gym, which is what upset me most about them breaking, its hard going back to wired headphones lol
I've broken two sets, 1 LG and the other I think was a Jabra set. They had both broken around the earpiece in almost the same place because of the plastic they used. While I didnt have any other issues with them, they only lasted about 3 or 4 weeks each.
I went with the s9's for the firm form also... I just made sure to wipe my head and the headset every so often and completely take them off when im cooling down. I will be implementing some fancy vinyl aka electrical tape on them soon to help from getting sepage into the control panels.
The sbh170's look good cause they are more flexible but the 500's look to be almost the same design of the two sets that I had. If I can find the LG set i'll snap a pic and show you what I mean.
i got the sony dr-bt101 headphones about a month ago and they work great. the only thing is they're a little big and over the ear not behind the neck..

I use the HT850's mentioned earlier in this thread. they're a little big and (as someone else commented somewhere on xda) make me look princess leiah-ish but the sound good and work well w/ the G1.
For anyone wanting a cheap set I recommend the Insignia NS-BTHDP.

I got these almost a year ago and take them to the gym and snowboarding regularly so they have been dropped, smashed and covered in snow a lot. I picked mine up off of ebay with $10 winning bid (shipped). They aren't fancy but have survived well for being so cheap.
These are on their way to me. I'll let you all know what I think of them.

My s9's died yesterday... I mean DIED, they wont chrage no matter what
As much as I hate to go back to wired devices I really like the options the ones you picked up give. Small and simple with good support (body wide clip).
So please post when you can
I Have a question for you guys. I want a headset that I can listen to music with while wearing it on only one ear, so not headphones but a headset that has the A2DP and AVRCP. IF you guys know about one let me know because that way I can listen to music at work and look like im actually working hard.
http://www.jaybirdgear.com/bluetooth-stereo-headphones-features.php I have these but the audio goes in and out on my G1 and even worst on my laptop.
Get the Plantronics 855. The second earpiece is removable, and without it looks just like the HFP-only 815 but still plays at A2DP quality.

OK so they showed up today. I have them charging at work and will give them a go when I run tonight. I'll post results either tonight or tomorrow morning.
update: Well I can't get them to pair. They paired up fine with my nokia N95, but android is having trouble. If I could get it to let me enter the passcode 0000 manually, I am sure it would work. Any ideas?
update2: OK so I got them paired, finally, but they dont seem to be working. I got them connected but theres no sound coming through them. They do work well with my n95 however so that's even more frustrating. Sound quality is OK, but I am going to try and return them. Any questions before I do?
i sweat a whole lot and have yet to find any wireless that can stand up to the abuse. i bought the adapter from HTC that includes a mic and 3.5 adapter. 10 bucks from t mobile.
while it still has wires it hasnt fallen victim to the sweat. FML in Alabama during the summer.

motorola s9 sound quality

ive seen mixed reviews what do you guys think?
I bought one on ebay, possible fake, not quite sure. The item had amazing clarity in sound quality, however it kept breaking up over and over and didn't work in my pocket while walking.
Since then I've ordered the Jabra BT3030 and couldn't be happier with the item. It works flawlessly no matter where my Android is.
Mine should arrive in a day or two. I can then give comments on quality.
I really hope mine will work better than BamaNZ's.
thanks for replies i just hot a pair of s9-hds from a seller who sold 89 woth 100 percent positive feedback for about 40 bucks(he he look at me trying to be all american) i hope its not fake
bought a pair of real non-HD's and I would figure if you're not using them for any activity they are GREAT!!! sound good, fairly comfortable, easy to use... but as soon as you sweat in them... say GOODBYE!!! It goes downhill here from there.
I have the s-9 also and man they suck . Now I'm really not sure if its cause of the bluetooth
But when I walk with these things it skipps like a cd player. What I have to do is place the phone in my back pack so it doesn't bounce. Then and only the will I get good flow of audio.
Then they sound great. Call quality isn't that great either. I get a lot of static.

awww man but i figure ill cut out the skipping by putting my phone in my inside pocket which is closer to the headset
I have had the S9's for a while and I used them on the SE p990i, MDA, Laptop, and the G1. I must say as far as sound quality goes the s9's are really good, and thats about it. It works best with my laptop, if you plan on moving around (walking, running) etc then not recommended. On all the mobile devices it breaks up a lot especially when there are other cellular devices around you. I'm looking to replace mine with something that has the sound quality of the s9 or better and one that doesn't break up as much.
i received my s9-hds today and they sound awesome the only problems are they are uncomfortable at first and im not sure if i look like an idiot with them
The HDs blow the regular s9s out of the water. I bought a pair and they sounded much better. They are uncomfortable at first, but you get used to them.

Thanks! I glad y'all brought this subject up. I was about to replace my HT820 Moto headphones with the s9. I think I need some with a better range. Kinda scares me if you can't even get good reception with the cell in your pocket, lol. I guess I go with the Jabra then. My old moto 820 had great range and sound quality but are like 4 years old and are falling apart.
i find mine work fine if i pair them outdoors but if i was in your situation i wouldnt risk it either

thanks thats a great idea im going to try it with the ones that came with my g1
I picked up a set from newegg a year or two ago and like them alot
i work outside all day so sweat did kill the mic
but as use for a headset it works fine
I also had issues that seemed like the phone was a bit far away, but i think thats because of the sidekick i was using
I now use a Zune 120 and earbuds and use the S9s for my PC, I should try them on the G1 soon
the jabra BT303 looks nice, if i would have known about it before the S9 i would have went that way so i can use my own earbuds
however if you dont plan on sweating and like the big cushy style i just saw the motorola S805 on newegg for $25
you cant beat that, in fact for the price i may pick up a set
for the PC

I have the Motorola HT820 (I think thats the one). It was their original bluetooth headset. A little big and maybe even a bit ugly but the sound quality is great, although a bit low for my taste, but no skips and great for exercise since they go over and around the ears. They tend to bother after an hour of wearing them or so.
Plus you get over 10 hours of use per charge!
only problem I have is that you can't control the music (I.E. pause, play, next/previous track) with the hero rom or most of the developed roms, or atleast I haven't gotten it to work. Only with the stock rom will the functions work. Still, volume up and down works...

[Q] Lost my MW600, any replacement suggestions?

Poor little thing is probably beat up and frozen in a snow pile somewhere by now . I left it clipped to my pocket but unfortunately it must have worked it's way out! So, I am looking for a replacement.
As much as I loved the little guy, perhaps there are other good models out there worth hearing about. I am pretty much looking for something similar with good quality, the one minor gripe I had with the thing was the touch volume control.
So what do you guys suggest? Buy another MW600 or go for something else?
MW 600 is the best...
Well, certainly not much of a discussion I had hoped for
Oh well, I suppose I shall go for another. It's hard to live without it now!
Try jabra(im using and also satisfied)
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
try a hbh-ds980. it's older than the mw600, but it hangs around your neck and lets you access your phonebook and recent calls list remotely. it also doesn't have that touch sensitive volume bar in the mw600. some disadvantages to it are it isn't able to swap headphones, doesn't have FM radio, and a 3x shorter battery life.
as stated above, mw600 is best.
if you're ok with headphones instead of earphones, better sound quality, better comfort, better battery life, then definitely check out the sony dr-bt50.
Try Jabra BT3030, which I currently use. Also my longest-used stereo bluetooth. Came from HBH-DS970(its lanyard gets easily cluttered with the earpiece wires; wires creep-out their sleeves; noticeable battery degrade after a year) and HBH-DS205(labeled having 8-hour playback life but noticed has shorter battery life than that of HBH-DS970; nasty/disturbing streaming disruption).
What really made me turn away from SE bluetooth is that they use their propriety connector; in this case, two slim contacts that may cause charging trouble once there's dirt and carbon buildup.
Jabra BT3030 comes with a labeled 8-hour playback/calls ops life(within 7-8 on my experience, since acquisition until now, almost 2 years), two wearing options(clip or lanyard), exchangeable earsets(use Shure IEM with them), rugged design(practically swear-proof with the rubber trimming and all), full function controls and miniUSB charging slot.
Three cons I can say about it are the lack of indicator screen(maybe to compensate battery life), the volume control is independent(doesn't control the actual phone's media volume; it controls the bluetooth receiver's audio level for both calls and audio streaming) and lastly the quite annoying led indicator which is constantly blinking(which I got used to already. To those who can relate, I looked like a weakened Ultraman while wearing it, hahah!).
For me, this is the best bet for an all-around stereo bluetooth receiver until now. Unless, there's already a similarly-spec'ed one with microUSB charging slot instead. That will be great.
the mw600 uses a microUSB... just fyi. i don't think SE will be using their old proprietary headset connector anymore ever since the bill passed where all manufacturers are adopting the microUSB port as the industry standard to reduce the amount of old phone chargers and cigarette lighter adapters being thrown away.
I would just say get a new one
I got my MW600 after a lot of googling for something better, and really it's a hard little gadget to beat in my opinion not to mention it was pretty cheap when i got mine (like 25 pounds or so)
it's sad that yours is lying dead in the cold somewhere :/ poor thing xD
indeed the only annoyance is the volume control, but yea, it's such a tiny little awesome piece of gear, i overlook that little inperfection
though i did just do a search on that jabra3030 thing, and that also looks promising, though i don't see the OLED screen and such (the Mw600 has that, and the same or better battery life)
I guess it comes down to what kind of durability you want, that jabra one looks indestructable
Why don't you have a look at IS800. Its very light and got great battery life. The issue I see is that it does not have Track Controls.
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
try DRC-BT30 by sony (not sony ericsson).. it looks better, and it is designed better even though it does not have a screen =]

Hey guys, thanks for the replies
Some of these are pretty cool, but one thing I realized I loved about the MW600 is that it could go all day at work & home and then charge at night, which is fantastic, so it's tough to match in that respect.
The Jabra BT3030 looks promising, but I can't find any Canadian resellers that seem to have it, so I'm not too sure.
I think I'm most likely going to start checking out some headphones like azian_advanced mentioned. Other than that, I guess some of the looking around has made me appreciate the MW600 for what it does do well.
ill sell you mine for $25. only catch is that the clip is broken.
anyone know if that can be fixed?
I'm using Jabra Clipper and I'm really happy with it. Sound quality is great. Works even better with doubleTwist player.

Went back from custom Froyo roms to 2.1 (kX10 R2B001 by kxhawkins) due to few bluetooth connectivity bugs that are still present in these versions but quite looking forward for further update from the devs.

Good one, actually curiosity made me crank mine open with a flat screwdriver. It took me some time and bit of struggle; the two halves of the casing are only glued to each other. No screws involved. One compact pcb and one slab of battery lies inside. Re-glued it back together and what all I can say is that it's definitely sweat-proof.
I found this thread on google when researching the MW600. After exploring the alternatives I've just ordered the Samsung HS3000. It has the requisite 3.5mm headphone jack like the others in this thread. Says it has Bluetooth 3 with APT-X which offers supoort of lossless codecs if your bluetooth source can do it. I'll give a quick review after I recieve it.

Yes, and I love it. Haven't tried with APT-X yet because I don't yet have a source that will do it. But even with standard A2DP it's great.
I'm planning on getting the Creative BT-D1 and the Senn BTD300 as APT-X transmitters.

Yet Another "I got My prime, This is my Assesment" thread

Ok, so i finally got my prime today and can FINALLy write something objective about the tablet. so here it goes.
Form Factor. I think the Prime excels at this. Feels, lite, sturdy and solid. If you like an ipad2, then you will like the form fo the Prime. I know some complain about the edges, etc... but quite honsestly the the ergonomica are ABOVE average.
Now, one downside is the location of the charging port on the tablet. I totally understand why its there (for the keyboard dock), but if you are lying face down in bed holding the table to watch netflix, or play a game, you cant help but wonder if you rest the tablet to much on your bed, wil you damage the power cord. Again, the placement is understandable, and I am not sure if there is a good way to fix this.
Screen: The resolution and details are again, better than expected. tehre are a few games that really make the screen shine... and hi def movies look awesome on it (with a good media player). Yet, my screen has some light bleed (only on black screens). My annal side gets really bummed about this, but an average user will definitely nto pay soo much attention to this. I did also notice, that the screen seems to get more fingerprints than my old HP touchpad. again, minor things that really have no substantial meaning.
Processing power: This is a tough call. If you compare it to otehr android tablets, tehre is no contest, Prime is the best. But I cant help but notice that the IPAD 2 feels snapier. This might be corrected with ICS, but for now, i have to say Ipad has a slight advantage.
GPS: Guys, i wnt even bother... everyone knows the facts. All i can say is that whne I bought it, i never said to myself "wow, i am getting this tablet because of the GPS". As far as I am concerned, this is what i consider as a perk that did not materialized. At least i know it KIND of works... but if you were buying a tablet cause of the GPS... then I am definitely ok a different wavelength.
WIFI: this is my big gripe. I see how the bars get affected by me jsut walking 20 steps from the router. oddly enough, I do not loose connectivity, and netflix still streams at high quality with less thann 50%... but it is still discouraging HOW sensitive that gps bars at. I cant help but wonder, if this is hwo ti behaves in a controlled environment (like my house), what can i expect in an airport or a starbucks
BT: This will be addressed later. One of my buying purposes, was to hook to a tv and sue as a gaming device witha bluetooth controller (like captain readbeard in the gamestop commercial). I cant help but wonder, if its true that Bt adn wifi dont mix to well, how is that going to transtlate for my gaming experience.
SOUND: Oh boy, WHY COULDNT ASUS but 2 damn speakers. Its really hard to play this in MONO audio, whne stereo is soo easily available!!!! I am surprised there are not so many complains about this. Sure, there are Bt speakers, headphoes, etc... but still, an average user carries the tab alone my itself most of the time... so lack of stereo is a big let down.
Conlusion: So far today, thsi si my overall impression. it is a great tablet, but tehre are some things that really make me question if ill keep it or not. In fact, i think having the small lightbleed is sort of a blessing, cause I can keep the tablet for 45 days (i am a best buy silver member), and see how i cope with it... but if somethign better coems along, or ASUS perfects their manufacturing process, i can go in 45 days, exchange it (and claim either faulty gps or light bleed), and getting it replaced.
Hope this review is somewhat objective and helps someone out (and pardon my spelling/typing skills... or lack of)
Felt like I wrote that myself I feel the same way about everything you mention. I do notice browsing is much Snappier with Opera and the keyboard is much more responsive with the Go Keyboard application with tablet extension. I have a feeling I am going to need a case of some sort with a built in speakers the Primes speakers are... dare I say it.... a absolute Joke my epic 4g touch phone blows it out of the water.
PS I can't wait for ICS!
this sounds like someone trying to be funny..lol. a decent impression though.
it is true although wifi bars are sensitive and might show lower signal strength, it still performs as of the signal strength was at Max. it is odd. this can be corrected thru software tweaks once developers make a kernel for it. they can change those kinds of values n such. Diamondback mentioned exact same issue happened with Desire HD and they put in a modified kernel and it fixed it. Everyone is hoping ICS is the savior..lol. it will come with better and updated drivers. it will also Do everything better in general since it has better coding. the clock is ticking and ICS will be here soon.
I couldn't have said it better. My Garmin handles all my GPS needs.

Asus claims it has stereo speakers but they just come out of that one side... If it was really mono you would be able to tell the difference especially with music.
I installed the Volume + app and have come to really enjoy the speakers now.
I saw some tear-down pics and it has 2 speakers in there. Not 1. So it is indeed stereo, unless the pics are not of the prime (highly unlikely).

If your worried about the charging port being on the bottom while in bed can't you simply turn it upside down so the charging port is on top? Are you using an app that will not rotate?

I take my Prime with my to school, I go to a tech school, They have wifi there and so far I get working wifi in every room I use in the building. They have a lot of repeaters though so I'm not sure how good of an example this is. Hope it eases at least some of your worrying about how it performs in the real world.
lol, you go me there... i just rotated the screen, and that problem is solved (feel so retarded cor that). Ill trythe speakerapp next. One more thing... anuone know where is the screen calibration option?

Idk about you calibrating that. But you can test it with Antutu tester. (That's what I used to make sure everything was working for me
Can someone give me a little direction on how to set the volume control plus app?

go into the themes and app section of Prime. then find thread titled Volume Coontrol or something. in there is the link to marketplace to buy app. but if you read description in marketplace, the creator says you can get the same paid app for free from his website. he lists his site on there. VolumeControl+ does wonders for your speaker.
Fair review, i just checked the wifi at the wifes work, i sat outside in the parking lot and scanned the available networks side by side with my droid charge and tfp, both has the same number of networks and same signal strength, i then logged on as a guest and did a few searches, both were comparable with return times, i know a crappy test but i figured it was a fair real world scenario for me, also atm the bt seems to work well, im currently tethered with pdanet tablet and getting good speeds
Good post op, i liked the break down

Yes, it is supposed to be that way. Both speakers are on the same side of the tablet. Would be nice if they were on both sides, but rest assured, there are two speakers in there and they sound damn good.

Well, like i said crappy test but i sit there and scam the wifi while waiting for her to finish up ,lol, that said yeah all the sound is coming from one side , sounds nice and clear but only coming from the audio port side , also you should check the othere thread on here where someone has taken thier tablet apart already , it looks as if there's 2 side by side speakers in here so that probably explains it ...still kind of an odd mono stereo effect when listening and watching in landscape and not very bad at all when listening in portrait, try rotating the tablet when listening to music, does the dock have speakers at least? Haha

No the dock has no speakers, but it would improve the Ops typing a bit, LOL (That's for earlier... semi- private joke)

a bluetooth handset for z ultra because yo dawg, the htc did it.

It's called TK2 bluetooth handset. it costs $20 on ebay ATM.
I've just bought one fron ebay. The sound quality is ok, battery life(from what te page says) is pretty good, also it rings when a call comein.
What's bad: The only ringtone it has is the famous iphone one...
I've not decided yet, if i ever saw a more ugly headset then that ... but its defniatly going for the first 3.
Beside that, why should i carry one that is as big as an iPod?
If the Smartphone is already a big one, the rest dont has to / should not be.
it's big. but good find

After seeing this and the Samsung pen headset it really comfort me on my choice to go for the sbh52 even if it'll be pricy.

Currently i am using one of these "Bluetooth dialers". They are tiny and work ok - the audio quality is nothing to rave about, though.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trk...aler&_nkw=bluetooth+dialer&_sacat=0&_from=R40
Waiting for the sbh52. The only thing i am disappointed about the shb52 is lack of aptx support. Strange that NONE of the Sony Bluetooth headsets have it. Wonder why.

Which one specifically are you using? They look kind of cool... The ability to dial from the device itself.
I know you can do that with the SBH52 but I'd quite like a lightweight option that you can just keep on a lanyard etc.

I use the Bluedio BD100 - http://dx.com/p/bluedio-bd100-1-0-oled-usb-bluetooth-v2-1-dialer-headset-white-3-5mm-jack-127233
A discussion around it on XDA itself - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709473
Interesting, it has one feature that the SBH52 does not - the ability to sync the phonebook. The BD100 copies over all the phonebook entries, and allows you to scroll through and dial out from the device itself. The SBH52, from what I have read, can only redial recent calls (which even the BD100 lets you). I am surprised why Sony left out such a useful feature.
Apart from that, the BD100 has vibration and a single high-pitched ringtone (which will scare you the first time you hear it!). You cannot change it, but luckily you can turn it off. Though there is a model from Satechi that, apparently, comes with 8 ringtones.
Call quality is ok, though a bit muffled. Music quality is mediocre, especially if you are used to aptx headsets like the HS3000 from Samsung or the HTC BH S600.
I have been using it for over six months (previously with my Note 2) and have not encountered the issues others have in the XDA thread. Been stable and reliable for me.
The best part is the size and weight. Worth the price i paid.

Sure it have interesting features, but going size, weight, features and price wise you can go as well for a full phone, like a Nokia 105 with longer talking time and standby time as well as better audio quality with Nokia quality and the all for about $20.

I'm surprised at that as well. I hope they release an app that rectifies that and at least lets you access the entire phonebook.
could someone please explain to me why anyone would want a device like this?
so many nice, small, BT headsets, with great sound, and many even ring when you get a call, so why would you want something this big, ugly, with horrible sound, when a nice BT headset is so much better in every way?
thanks!

I don't think the sony sbh52 is in any way ugly. It's just like a normal Bluetooth set as it allows you to plug in headphones but it also lets you take calls without the headphone connected.
I agree some of the other units which are basically like a small phone are not by cup of tea. At that point I just as well carry a normal small phone plus a tablet lol
I agree the sony unit isnt really ugly, but a couple of the other ones I saw really were..
it just seems weird to carry "2 phones" around with you at the same time...or am I missing something?

Well I can't speak for anyone else but yes by getting the Z Ultra Im trying to combine the phone/tablet experience and only have to carry one device.
Having said that I won't mind carrying the SBH52. But the point is if I forget it I can still make calls without it. :good:
I thought that is what my mindset would be when I bought the GN2; I ended up getting a Note 8.0 a couple of months ago, which is the perfect tablet size, IMO..Can you put the sony in your pocket when you wear "normal" pants, not skinny jeans, or, will in not fit in any pants pocket? It looks narrow and long, like it would fit in loose pants pockets..

I think it will fit in normal pants pockets but definitely not skinny jeans. What I did was buy a cheep TPU case off ebay for $3 so I could check out the dimentions and try it in my pockets first
Coming from a note 2 I know what you mean. I don't have much use for a full blown tablet though and in the past I've handed down both an ipad and nexus 7 to family members. I just want a large screen mobile thats not a pain to browse or consume media on while on the move. For anything other than that, serious browsing or for real productivity I'll switch to the laptop.
Even then I find Im far more productive when trying to do real work when using a desktop PC. The laptop is a macbook pro so its no slouch, but simply being sat at a desk using a large screen monitor, full sized keyboard etc.
Anyway I got off track there a little lol.. I think the note 8 is a good size, pity they made the side bezels so big though. The phone functionality on the cellular model is sometime id like to see enabled on all tablets.
my wife has the note 10.1 tablet, which I find too big; we both had original Motorola Xooms, which were also 10 inch, and I thought was too bulky..The 8 inch tablet really hits the sweet spot, IMO..
problem is, if I get a 6.4 inch phone, and have an 8 inch tablet, are these devices too similiar too each other?
my tablet is a wifi model, but I make VOIP calls with it, and can text with it too; wifi is everywhere, and where it isnt, I just tether to my GN2, so connectivity is not an issue..
My wife is already warning me I am not getting the Sony, so, until someone is selling it here, and I can take her to a store and show her how cool it is, I have to control myself! She thought I was nuts getting a Note 1, then she wanted one; when I got a note 2, she said I was nuts again, but now she has one too, so there is definately a pattern here I can take advantage of!

Theres a big difference in screen area between 6.5" and 8" I actually wish the Ultra bezels were smaller and they had stuffed a 7" screen in there.
!! Seriously it would fit in almost the same footprint, just a couple of mm wider. The note 2 will be the superior device if you use the spen a lot for note taking etc. The Ultra note taking is nowhere near as good as on the Note 2 or Note 8, but its ok for infrequent use.
Me and the mrs both had note 2's. She smashed the screen on hers so I bought her a mega 6.3. Forward thinking so she could't moan about me buying the Ultra lol
