[Q] APN Backup/Restore on ICS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why does every new android release have to take away freedom and feel less and less 'open'?
In any case, I just flashed the experimental CM9 and I was greeted with an inability to restore my APNs from my usual app (APN Backup & Restore from Ritesh Sahu) because apps are no longer allowed to modify APN files on 4.0.
I would like to know what the simplest way to backup and restore my APNs is in this situation. Is there some simple way to create a flashable ZIP or something similar to restore them with?

I usually don't backup and restore my APNs just hit reset to default and they are restored ....... i believe you've tried that if not give it a shot

Yeah I've tried that, I need to backup and restore because I'm on a relatively small Canadian carrier (sasktel).

If you have a Nandroid backup you could restore that, then write down your APN and save it some where.

Exactly Aaron. Why people don't write these things down before they go messing around with things is beyond me

Well I have only one APN in the settings and I did copy it, works fine and gets data. But when I back up using that app it says it backs up 2000 something APNs and my carrier on my phone actually shows up upon restore, unlike now when it's just 6 digits.

I would also like to restore my APN's instead of always typing them in when changing Roms.
How can I create a script, overwrite a sys-file or elselike to prevent me from reytyping apn's, when they aren't implemtented in let's say a custom rom ?

me too any ideas please

Correct CSC for your network is all that should be required .
Copy and paste to new custom roms .

CSC for your location and network is that correct if its not you have to manually enter settings .
It is of course not a new release but a leaked buggy beta test rom ICS as posted .

You can use HiApn on market to restore your apn that you backed up from another rom.
However for it to work on ICS you need to make it a system app. You can do so in TiBu options.
Works for me no problem.
The app can also set some automatic ones based on your carrier which worked for me but looked a little different than the ones on my other phones.

A simple App to backup and restore APNs (Settings to connect to the internet with the mobile connection). The backup is stored in the /sdcard/APNBackupRestore folder.
NOTE: Starting with Android 4.0/ICS, 3rd Party apps don't have access to write APN settings, hence this app no longer works for restoring APN backups. Some users have reported that it can be used on ICS if its set to run as a System app (using Titanium for example)

[Q] MMS issue.

So, I am running the latest version of the Evil Eris rom and I am having issues downloading MMS pictures. I keep getting that download error or what not. I did the step listed here(twice), but that did not work for me. Is there anything else I could possibly do fix this issue?
Have you tried using "APN Backup & Restore"? You would:
1. Load a ROM where MMS works.
2. Download and install "APN Backup & Restore"
3. Use the app to perform an APN backup.
4. Reload the ROM you want to get MMS working on.
5. Download and install "APN Backup & Restore"
6. Use the app to delete the APNs on that ROM.
7. Use the app to restore the APN backup made in step #3
8. Reboot.
I haven't personally done this and so I can't vouch for it's effectiveness, but I have seen that a number of folks have done this to successfully rectify MMS issues.
I dunno that seem like a bit of a chore to do, I was hoping for something a bit more simplified.

Ain't going to get any simpler than that. You can always switch to another rom
Alyosius works well, as does plainjane...

Oh, I guess I am out of luck at the moment then.
Use xtrSense 4.0.6.1.
Just as many sweet features as EvilEris, more stable, and other than pinch-zoom Google Maps and the sweet copy/paste Browser, it's better than EvilEris, IMO.
The rom you are suggestion doesn't have the same cut and paste as the current rom I am using? One thing I like about my current rom is color scheme.

there is a working apn floating around here if u use the search button ,, find that , download apn backup/restore ,, put that apn in the apn folder that is created on ur sd card , open app , delete old apn , restore backup apn ,, done

APN settings gone!

I clicked "Reset to Default" on the Apn menu and then they all disappered and i cannot connect. There used to be like 5 different apns. Is there a way to retrieve them back, i am no longer able to connect to the data.
Hi, are you using Market Enabler or other app that change operator code? Try disabling it, restart the phone and then try to reset.

If you can get wifi, go to the market and download apn backup and restore. It comes with a whole bunch of apn's and should be able to restore the ones you're missing. If you have an sd card, you have to copy the apnbackuprestore folder to the internal phone memory, or else it wont see the backup..

Strange, when i installed apn back up and restore it came with an .xml file that had 900+ apns.. I can try to post it, but just take a look in your apnbackuprestore folder, if you have an sd card, copy that folder to the internal phone memory..
Unzip the file first, then place in your apnbackuprestore folder.
you would have your apn's back by now if you have typed them in. how lazy can you be? Also, most pseudo roms and scripts install them.

No need to flame this post... Apns can be kind of tricky, especially if you make one little error.. Then nothing works. I don't blame him for wanting a simpler way of restoring the apn, after typing in the information by hand 20+ times, I found a much easier way of doing it.
Ok i got connect again, thanks to you guys. I am currently connected "AT&T US HSDPA", is it any different then just the "AT&T" apn? Also I used to get a H+ logo, but now i only get H (I am on gingerblur), it because of the settings or just do not have 4g right now?

Is there a way to delete and restore APNs with ICS

Seems android does not allow APNs to be deleted or restored... Is this true? or is there a way?
You sure its not the non released beta test buggy warranty voiding firmware you are using .
Or do I not understand your meaning .As I swap apn no problem even withouu a CSC .You have correct CSC ?.

I have had to restore my APNs with a app from the android market after any rom flash. Ill be able to make calls text only thing is no mobile data with G.C.I. out here in Alaska. I tried a few of these ICS roms and I try to use the APN backup and restore app but the message it gives is that android 4.0 does not allow for APNs to be deleted or restored.
A dev tried making me a flashable zip using my APN.xml but it didn't work

yes but how do i install the mods just download the zip file and flash through cwm?
i have a fantastic answer for you...
if you flash a new custom rom and then you want to restore all the settings from the old one, you can go in Cwm mode > Backup and restore > Advanced restore > restore DATA...
in this way you restore only the app and the configuration of system...
i hope i help you!
so the app and the configuration from the old rom will be in the new rom ..??? .. wow! thank you for your answer!

Exercise caution doing this
Always make one before flashing.
Remember that full backups take a lot of space. Download titanium backup and backup user apps and their data, delete them and then make a nandroid backup. Takes less space and its a lot faster.
I curently have 2 backups. My stock ROM and a curently used custom ROM. Once my custom ROM is updated I delete the backup of the custom ROM, I update it, then make another Nandroid backup with the updated version that way it saves me a lot of space.

Use this with caution.
Its better to set you phone manually than to brick it due to lack of time, or doing it manually.
Stick with the basics, basics dont get your phone bricked. Trust me

I have restored data with no problem using Data only Nandroid backups for years .
But i always only restore data to a same build rom that is no restore of ICS to JB and no restore of KLP to JB .
On PC original factory rom + Nandroid copy of last known full working custom rom .
Worked on custom roms are backed up to ext sd card .
Worst problem i ever have is usually if i wipe something without thinking clear Nandroid backups and forget to update . Even then its only a stock rom Odin flash to start again .

In TiBu (Titanium Backup) just back up user apss (like facebook, twitter, games, apps downloaded through GooglePlay Store)
Run a batch backing up user apps and then from System>Apps uninstal all of them but TiBu. Just like that once you've returned from making the backup, open TiBu and select backups/restore tab in the top section again and press the menu/options softkey. Select Batch and then Restore all missing user apps.
No need to make a .zip file, not flashable through recovery.

How to Backup EFS for SCH-I605?

Before messing around any more and getting myself in trouble I thought it would be good to backup the EFS.
The only thing is I only see references on backing it up for the N7000/7001. Will the EFS Pro Backup or Samsung EFS Backup programs work for the Verizon version?
Thanks

Sorry, probably should have given you more information.
Anyways I'm new to the Note 2 and bought a used one that was already updated to 4.3 and therefore can't install TWRP onto it.
I did already get it rooted and figured out how to get into the hidden menus. So before messing with those, which from reading the settings in the hidden menus are stored in the EFS. So I wanted to make a backup in case as from what I am reading that EFS is where everything specific to your IMEI and such is stored, so you really don't want to mess it up.

Ya, mainly I just wanted the ability to turn on or off 4G service. If I am up in the mountains and know I won't have 4G service then I can turn it off to save battery life.
I did find the option under CDMA->COMMON->Band Pref->CDMA Only. To bad I have to restart to set it though as my previous phone the Droid RAZR Maxx could change it on the fly.
I did find one other good setting and that is to turn off WIFI sleep. I wondered why it kept disconnecting from my WIFI if I left it off for awhile. I use llama to turn off my pattern lock when connected to my home WIFI and I was wondering why it kept re-enabling on me at home. I truly hate that it is defaulted on most WIFI cards, even on a PC it generally is defaulted to be able to sleep.
Figured it out myself, but in case anyone else has my same situation of having a locked bootloader with 4.3 OTA with root access and want to backup all the important data, including EFS/RADIO/TOMBSTONES/ETC.
Then use the Tool EFS Professional from this thread: CLICK ME
I had to update my BusyBox to 1.22.1 as I tried both 1.20.2 and 1.21.1 (this was installed when root access was done). In the older versions it was failing at creating the archive at the end after copying the data.
