[Q] How to change Mms.apk background - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to all of you!
I have to ask you some advice, because I really don't know how to solve my problem, even if I have looked a lot for a solution.
I would like to change background color of my Mms.apk. I attached the one Mms.apk I am using.
This is what I did several time:
1. Decompiling Mms.apk
2. Editing listitem_background.xml in /res/drawable/, replacing transparent with bright_foreground_light, a color I have found in my framework-res.apk.
3. Recompiling my Mms
4. Putting it in /system/app with 644 permissions
Every time I follow these steps, my new Mms.apk results to be not installed and I don't know what to do!
Can you help me?

Please, help me! I want to learn!!

Just use secondary messaging app, like GO SMS Pro or Handcent. You can tweak those settings in these apps.

Thanks for your advice, but I really would like to learn something about modding apk.

I think you need to sign the apk to make it install!

Found something for you... I think it's exactly what you need:
h**p://stackoverflow.com/questions/7986591/anyone-have-experience-with-apktool-the-android-decompiler

Thanks a lot! Now I can't try, but as soon as I come back home, I will try following advices in the post you send to me.
I really hope it will work.

FYI: denverg did something similar wit the Nexus S MMS app:

Ok, thanks a lot. He doesn't tell how he did!
This afternoon I will come back home and I will try with the APKTool I had found in your previous link.

I have followed advices in that post but my apk still doesn't work. Maybe I am wrong with something about signing apk, I have generated a signature called like the one in that post and use it, but, if I decompile Mms.apk and rebuild it, without editing anything, my apk still doesn't work.

I have solved the issue of signature by replacing META-INF and AndroidManifest.xml in the modified apk with the ones in the original one.

delca85,
I'd like to change my background color to black. Can you explain to me what you did to change yours?
I looked at the res/drawable/listitem_background.xml and I see three colors.
Which one did you modify?
Dave

I'm sorry but I haven't been able to find the way to edit Mms background. Maybe you can find something in Google, I will keep on trying, if I'll find something, I am going to write it here.

When i change message (and phone, home and contact) icon to look like s2 on my galaxy ace i do this.
1. Copy mms.apk in /system/app folder to pc
2. Rename it to mms.zip and unzip
3. Edit icon and put edited .png file back to mms.zip (dont create new zip)
4. Rename mms.zip back to mms.apk and put it to /system folder and now change file permissions
5. Move mms.apk to /system/app folder and overwrite
6. Reboot
sorry my english

Sepp82, I don't have any problem to change png, but, in this situation, I have to edit some xml and I don't know which and how.
Inviato dal mio GT-I9100 usando Tapatalk

ALWAYS BACK UP ORIGINAL APK FILE!!!
I use ninja morph from the market, edit what i want and then exit out, open root explorer,go into androidthemes/workspace,delete the META-INF folder, exit root explorer. Open ninja morph, goto Finish Project, and select project you're working on. Boom done. Open Signapk from market, hit next choose your file, platfom, next, let it do its thing hit finish at the end, root explorer install or copy paste to system.

Oh, that was the statusbar widget. I'm at home, but it's quite late already. You can extracts the framework res and/or systemui from the zip of the T. E. A. M. ROM which is in the development section, otherwise I can send you the file tomorrow maybe. Or if your good with photoshop you could create it yourself.

Here's statusbar_background.png.
I tried to replace it with the default file in framework-res, but I can't notice any changes.
Here's the framework-res I modded.
I tried replacing the framework-res provided by you sdk16420 and now Im in a bootloop I backed up my original framework on a sdcard.I think I didnt properly replace the framework-res.apk I renamed the modified one to framework-res2.apk and copied to the system framework folder...then I deleted the original one there and all the apps started crashing until I was left with the black screen...then I managed to reboot it...and now Im in a bootloop can I somehow replace the original one from my sdcard with the one that is currently in the system framework folder ? through adb or something ? And thank you korma when I get out from this bootloop Ill attach my original framework-res.apk and if your not too busy then maybe you could mod it for me because Im not too good with modifying apks ?
Ok so I didnt find a way to restore it with adb...I know its possible, but I just didnt have time to look around for an answer so I reinstalled the rom.
So here is my framework-res.apk could someone please modify it and reupload it and tell me how to properly replace it so I dont end up in a bootloop again ? Thank you

MOD Request - SMS Conversion to MMS

Samsung Touchwiz has this annoying habit of converting a text message to MMS moment it exceeds a given number of characters. There is a MOD available in GS3 forums which prevents this and keeps the text message from converting to MMS no matter how long. Can such a MOD be developed for Note 2?

Guys.... It's very simple... Take a look into our popular custom rom. Most of them have included no sms to MMS converted.
So, download the custom rom, extract mms.apk from /system/app and replace yours with any root explorer...
edit: Here it is...Just replace it, check permissions (rw-r-r) and reboot device. Its not flashable zip (its for LJA but im sure that its working in previous versions too):

I tried this and it looks good! reminds me of the neutrino rom that I had on my Atrix 4g. Please do post an update once you change the clock to white font. Thanks!
Also, do you happen to have the stock SystemUI.apk file?
Looks great but is the black status bar the only modification? Either way I want this. I hate the gray bar haha
Also, when I put it in the folder, do I have to do anything with the current SystemUI.apk or simply write over it? If so, assuming I want to go back to the old SystemUI, how do I get that?

Rename your old SystemUI.apk to something like SystemUI.apk.bak and just leave it there. That way you have your backup ready to go if you need it.

Well I just did everything and I rebooted and got a "Unfortunately, SystemUI has stopped."
What did I do wrong? Under ES File Explorer, all the read and write boxes were checked and the execute boxes were unchecked.

I even tried clearing cache and dalvik cache. Same problem.
Use root explorer. Also you could be using the base ROM and not a stock rom. That might cause a fc because the base has a modified systemUI.apk so some of the settings he made wouldn't work anymore.

Hmm maybe it was the file explorer app. I didn't want to have to pay for Root Explorer since I was under the impression ES File Explorer offered me the exact same stuff.
Yeah es file explorer definitely handles files different. That's why I broke down and paid for Root explorer, I never regretted it, IMO it is the best one out there.

Just pull the 1 zip or 2 zips from the rom, & explore for you're self, I think its the system ui but could be wrong, I'm not near my computer at the moment to check so I can't say exactly which one it is? If you're gonna mod the battery icons you're gonna look inside anyway & I takes like 10secs to extract & search the apk? If you don't wanna do that, there are various apps in the playstore you can download for free to look at the framework pics from inside the apks without opening them! As Maarten already pointed out SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk. And if you want to use them in apktool you'll also need com.htc.resources.apk.
Just out of curiosity: are you going to use UOT or apktool? Been trying to change status bar clock colour on half-sense and fulmix (see my post in his thread) with apktool but haven't succeeded yet.
What are your plans on theming?

SystemUI must have classes.dex; there is where all the instructions (the smali files) come from for the apk to work. Like what to run for the EQS and many more.
As mentioned on the link given above
Code:
b) If you are using apkmanager, you can just export classes.dex, then delete classes inside the apk. Then decompile, edit, compile and add classes.dex back when ready.

Magazinehome.apk = Magazine UX in P605 KK

Hi..I just extracted magazinehome.apk from system/priv-app(sm-p605 kitkat). It is Magazine UX launcher.
But it seems this app. is not enabled by default.
Any ideas how to make it works?
have you extracted from p905 rom? if yes you should eliminate the original one on the p605 reboot and clear data of the app. there is a detailed instruction on this topic if you search in the forum. I installed it and confirm is fully functional.

I don't know why it doesn't work for me.. If I delete the files like magazinehome/odex, seclauncher/odex.. I don't have touchwiz in app manager.. so I can not clear any data.. And after copy attached files and restart I have biack screen.. No launcher.. Permissions set to 664 and tried 644 and .. nothing..
Compilation:
Make Sure You Have Flipboard Installed and logged In
- Install Nova Launcher just in case
(backup/delete)
MagazineHome.apk
MagazineHome.odex
SecLauncher3.apk
SecLauncher3.odex
download only MagazineLauncher.apk from here:

MagazineHome.apk:

MagazineWidget.apk

- Move them to /system/priv-app/
- Set permission to 664 (root explorer rw-r--r--)
- Restart
- goto application manager and reset touchwiz settings
for me it works does it work for you?
only bug's:
- just a few widgets on magazine
- FC setting lock screen wallpaper
- weather widget FC when moving resizing, but fully functional if stays put !
eehh... finally.. Thanks a lot for help.. It works..
Ps. permissions set by default to 644 not 664.. Maybe it's nothing.. so ignore it..
