New to Android - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm pretty new to Androidbut I've already gotten in to flashing custom roms. I currently have Viaero wireless add my carrier. I've tried CyanogenMod and ran into some data problems and am now using villainROM. It'd nice and stable but there's not much customization and to me it feels about the same as stock. I'd love to hear some suggestions on a new ROM to try. The reason I stayed a new thread is because I'm a little unsure if being on a different carrier well effect what kernels I can use. All I'm really looking for is decent stability, decent battery life, and a fair amount of customization. Thanks in advance.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

u can use your carrier on any kernel
try hyperdroid andrioidmeda
fast and stable
welcome to the light side

How is it in terms of customization? I liked the options I had with CyanogenMod it just wouldn't work right for me
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

you can download custom launchers from market
rom toolbox will allow you to customize more stuff, theme section of forums for themes
but nothing comes close to customization than cyanogen mod

you can also try checkrom.. it has a kitchen (a place where you can download modifications in one place).
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

Well I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks for the suggestion.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

Any rom/kernel will work on any network.
You can use any radio, one that will work well on your carrier.
I recommend hyperdroid, see my signature.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

Thanks for the help. Like I said I'm still new to the scene but I'm picking it up quickly. I think I'll be giving hyperdroid a shot tonight. Just out if curiosity. What battery life have you been seeing with it on normal/heavy use?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

I just started using Hyperdroid recently. With Push, and Data Sync on, with heavy usage I get 13 hours of battery life.

Motorola ATRIX 4g roms

I was just trying to get some good suggestions on which rims are good to use with my Motorola ATRIX

They are all great and stable. Read through the DEV section and do some research. Find one that suits your needs, then flash away. Just make sure you are unlocked and using the correct recovery. Good luck!
ROMs are like pokemons - you need to try them all yourself.

This is no diss to the developers because I very much appreciate their work!
And I haven't tried all the ROMs
Still, for my suite of apps, for the smoothest and most reliable op of the phone and for the longest battery life..I am back to stock. I have frozen apps, I am running the .97 radio (which has made a huge difference to me in reliability and throughput) but I am stock. Mainly, I had issue with the various incarnations of the Faux kernel and always wound up with lost widgets (I like my widgets I tried all the suggestions and still, at some point I would lose widgets with the kernel. Since this is the basis of most ROMs that did it for me (and it has to be the kernel since I had the problem on the stock ROM with the kernel).
Good luck...it is easy to go back to stock if you don't like the various ROMs.
I intend to try CM7 later on when the Faux kernel and the integration with Setcpu (both cores) is resolved and CM7 has webtop integration (I use the lapdock every day).
I've used a few of the ROM's out there and right now I am on HomeBase version 2 with Faux's latest kernel. I will say that the version of HomeBase is pretty close to stock but it has a bunch of enhancements (zipalign, memory tweaks, etc). My suggestion is to get to flashing and see what suits you. What I like you may hate. CM7 is worth a try as well and I may switch over when it become official (or I may wait for MIUI).
As for the widget issue...fix permissions fixed it for me, hundreds of restarts and I still have my widgets.
You should check out the dev section...good ROM's and good reading!!!

I recommend 22 inch chrome rims depending on what you like.
If you are looking form suggestions for ROMs I'd suggest CM7.

What rom do you recommend

Im currently using cyanogen 7.0.1 but I've had issues with this, such as it randomly forgetting my ringtones and so nothing plays when people ring or text, alarms not going off, random reboots and loads of other problems,
So I'm looking to move to another rom, I'm looking for one with good battery life and doesnt have a habit of ****ing up on me, can anyone suggest a rom, wanna get it done tonight
batista 2.1 with siyah 1.8 kernel
works perfectly for me and good battery too
Stock. Best eva

only tried stock.still getting used to Android then I will try some other ROM
I like stock with root.
People are saying good things about the latest XXKI4.
KI3 with jkay installed is good for me right now.
Having said that I'm using different launcher,contact/dialer,messaging.
Battery and performance has been great.

Have not used all the ROM's that are made, but right now I'm in love with Androidmeda. It removes all the crapware, and the phone feels so quick and responsive.
Converted 3 other friends who own SGS2 onto it, and they all love it.
Criskelorom v26. Freaking awesome
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I love Cognition. But I have not tried anything else.
I have tried several roms but I got the best performance/consumption with "MikiMod CarbonOcean v 5.1[KI4]".
Give it a try and you tell us.

+1.
I hate Custom ROM's frankly. Some even remove features than adding. Don't forget it's a Smartphone.
Most of the touchwiz roms are good, most are similar.
CM7 latest nightly is very good.

VillianROM is excellent. Basically stock but much more customizable.
stock now for e dont know much about android very new to it
Leo & Check's CheckROM RevolutionHD V1.0 is what I recommended. fast, long and cold.
personally, i keep going back to criskelos roms
MIUI, it's so pretty on that super amoled plus.
Using lighting rom right now. Like it more than cyanogenmod though

Cognition or CheckROM. Both are very stable. Cognition ran flawlessly on my phone.

UnNamed, ICScrewed, or SensatioN?

Just out of curiosity, which ROM do you guys prefer?
Its all personal opinion but I prefer unnamed. Battery life is great...which is what I want. Never had a reason to change so I can't speak for other roms.

Unnamed for the win
Try them all. It's not difficult to flash, Google will load most your apps back anyway on a fresh install, and you won't get a biased opinion.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
UnNamed on Monday, ICSrewD on Tuesday, SensatioN on Wednesday and so on and on. What he said, why not try them all. That's one if the main reason I rooted.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
Ive used them all. Id say ICScrewed and Sensation with Siyah kernel over unnamed. Battery life is simular with them all really. MIUI over them all

I've wanted to try miui, i've heard nothing but great things. Does the fact that its 2.3.7 make a difference when restoring a backup that's 2.3.6?

Used miui (both variances) and now unnamed. Battery life is about the same and is largely depended on kernel. Used siyah for miui and entropy dd for unnamed. The reason for leaving miui was skrewed headset volume. Still monitoring to see if it gets fixed.
They are all awesome other than that.

I've tried both Unnamed and ICScrewed... didn't like the latter. Unnamed caused me some problems though since it flashes the baseband to UCKK6. Caused my wifi to go haywire and resetting every couple minutes. Once I flashed the modem back to UCKH7 things seem to be a bit more stable... so far.
SensatioN because Crysis is the man.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
I've literally been on every rom available for the SGH-i777. When I look for the rom that makes me happy, I look for the one with the most complete features. The only one to make me completely happy with battery life and features was UnNamed v2.0+. this rom is always kept in the most stable with almost a next day release if someone complains about anything. That's what I love about this rom. When people were having stability problems with the latest Entropy Kernel they changed it up and downgraded the kernel that very same day! Also, who was the very first rom to feature a working NFC?! GTG is a very friendly guy, ignores you if you dont get around the thread though, but its fine because if you question has been answered, why answer it again? Search next time!!
Anyways. Prior to UnNamed, My favorite was personally GalnetMIUI, official build with Task, the only thing that really kept me away was its instability, such as the screwed up headphone bug, which seems to be in CM7 pretty badly. (WHY HAS NO ONE FIXED THIS?) and the fact that there was no NFC, seems to be lacking features, and a lot of them. With MiLocker, I seem to be happy with UnNamed, I don't run into any problems except a delayed lock screen but meh, Who really locks there phone just to unlock it a second later? Lol.
So seriously, UnNamed 2 for the win !!

WiFi issues are resolved for his and my ROM sir
I ran Unnamed all day yesterday, but I switched back to MIUI. I just think MIUI is more polished than any stock ROM, and has more features that make the phone more enjoyable to use. The battery life has been great, and it's been very stable. Every now and then I get the urge to try something else, but I don't really see a reason to switch.
i put UnNamed on mine first and really liked it but wanted more ICS flavor, so i switched to ICScrewD. really like the jkay app that comes with it. both were very stable for me and didnt have any problems, the only reason i switched was for visuals
I have tried and love all the roms. I finally settled with miui. All the features and menus just flow. It's fast stable had great battery life and has tons of themes to choose from. I might be biased since I ran miui on my captivate and just got used to it. I do change the launcher and run go launcher.

Been on unnamed since day one, but recently switched to ICScrewed, and I'm liking them about the same so far, though I'm warming to ICScrewed.
I do like that ICScrewed has more bloat removed, and I LOVE jkaymod. If you want more customization, try out ICScrewed.

Question for the thunderbolt community

Hey everyone, I am going to be trading some services (a mechanic is doing my breaks in exchange for me rooting and custom romming his lady's phone) and would like to know what your opinion is on the best thunderbolt ROMs available? She is currently on stock software and hates absolutely everything about her phone and how it behaves.
What would you guys recommend? I'm looking for functionality, reliability, battery life and the smallest amount of software bugs as possible.
Tweaked stock ROMs? AOSP? CM7 or 9? I know nothing about the thunderbolt community and would greatly appreciate any info you can give me.
Thank you everyone

Leaving it on a stock rom unless you plan on maintaining the rom for her..If she has no idea what shes doing then dont cause a headache for yourself, with techs its nothing to change out a rom, or if it gets buggy, well you get the point... the best thing would be a factory reset, or check the memory on the phone she prob has to many apps, install the apps from the sd card to free up the memory cuz im on a stock rom and its way fast, great battery, most of all the battery issues are from apps..just trying to save you a down the road..
I would go to the dev section of this forum and look at the ROMs and see what catches your eyes its opinion over opinion when saying stock is better than custom tons, I myself like custom roms because you can choose a wide variety of tweaks etc etc

LiquidRom 3.2 and use Rom Tool box built in to download pink theme, use built in theme chooser and apply theme, the get a pink keyboard skin and appy. Btw you can customize splash screen and bootanimation to her liking with Rom Tool box too. No bugs for me.

Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Definitely a stock based ROM, like Zues. AOSP's battery life isn't as good as Sense (to no fault of the amazing devs of course).
I also suggest Imoyeson's leankernel 5.1.0GB in battsaver mode. Amazing performace with amazing battery life.
I also recommend Zues. ran it for a month straight no problems. only switched roms to see what else is out there
BAMF 1.11 with kernel+++ and turn off task manager at startup. Since I've installed the latest version of BAMF I've had zero fcs, great battery life and good speed. I'm a tech all day long with Windows PC and understand little about behind tor scene android functions. BAMF seems most reliable and low maintenance. Remember every phone responds different to the same os. It's just like gas every kia responds different to bp gas.

ROM recommendation

Hey galaxy s2 community! Just a quick question for you guys and gals. I'm ready to flash a ROM on my phone and I think I've narrowed it down to ether aokp or shostock2. I'd like to stick to ics now that the i777 has official ics (more stable and better features) so I think I may wait like a month. I'm looking for something fast (I like showing off my quadrant scores to my HTC fan boy friends) and stable, a good battery life would be great=). Can you help me choose between aokp and shostock2? And don't turn this into a war guys=) we all know they're both amazing ROMs, I just want to know which has better battery life and stability, speed is a nice bonus=) thanks!
I come from a captivate with darkyrom if that tells anyone what kind of ROM I like=)

You could dual boot them using the siyah kernel. If you choose to do that download the version WITH mic swap, and try them both without flashing back and forth.
try both and see which works best for you.
As noted... no ROM fits everyone.. try a few, and see which works best for YOU.
