Possibly a dumb question but if I customize my homescreens with adw launcher and other things (going to try for a "hubs" look) when ICS update comes around will that ruin all the customizations? It will be a decent amount of work to get the customization done so would hate to do it and then have to redo it all in a weeks time.

yes, more than likely it will erase all of that..sorry...but ICS own launcher n skin is better anyways so you can try to customize that. plus I heard something along the lines of Google making the ICS launcher n homescreen mandatory or something like that. not sure of the details. maybe that only goes for manufacturers n other companies so they don't put their own skin on top of ICS and slow it down. they said they will be some kind of customization option though. not exactly sure what it is though.

edit. Lol never mind see the sticky now. Any way I can change where this is posted?
IMO, a General should not be demoted to a Hack, he covers more ground whereas a tinkerer is more specialized. But there is indeed a Q & A section, and there's also a Dev Section so why is hacking called General?
the update can clear your settings but adw has an option for backing up settings.

hmmmm, well think I will wait for the update either way just in case.
adw can back up settings, but last i checked, it can't backup your homescreen configuration.
but it's just going to depend on if the ICS update needs a data wipe, if it can be flashed on top of HC, then you should be fine, otherwise, you'll just need to reinstall adw and reconfigure it.
for the comment regarding the launcher being a necessary requirement for 4.x it's not accurate, google requires that OEM's include the stock "halo (holo?)" theme in the OS to be allowed access to gaaps/market, but it basically means OEM's can still **** up the OS however they want so long as unskinned apps default to the stock theme.
so people who are expecting this to help OEM's update their **** faster, it's not going to do anything at all for anyone really, aside from making apps that don't have their own chrome/framework/skin look like stock ICS apps.
ADW does backup home configuration including icons and arrangement.
I just bought ADW EX so I hope it wasnt a waste of time and money as I absolutely love it.

I was hoping this was a true statement. Manufacturer skins/themes turn me off big time. It feels like heavy bloatware.

I believe this is what he is referring to.
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2012/01/holo-everywhere.html
Should let you revert back to Holo theme in most instances, and help to get a more uniformed look across differente devices from different manufacturer. This with the Disable App function should help the non-root user get closer to vanilla android. Good approach IMHO

i stand corrected, i looked at it last night and it does look like it does it now.
it backs them up on /sdcard though, so i would move those files to your computer or microsd card before updating so that if anything gets wiped you don't lose them

this is what i was referring to, but that does not effect the end user in any way, it's not a way for the user to choose the device theme, it introduces a default (holo) theme that developers can choose to force their apps to use (since it must be included in gaaps/market devices) and it seperates the skin/framework for OEM's to hopefully allow them to push updates quicker since they can work on their UI overlays outside of the OS itself. it also allows developers to let their app choose whatever is set as the default skin for any 4.x device, so if you have a TW or Sense device running 4.x the app can adapt to the framework for those overlays to provide the end user with a consistent UI experience if the developer chooses to do so.
however, as sense and TW dig deeper into the OS itself, this will still keep those OEM's from updating their devices even relatively quickly.
what android needs to do is sandbox the OEM overlays, and force them to release devices with vanilla android and then allow the user to install the OE skin if they choose to do so.
but being that android is made for manuf, and not end users, that's never going to happen.

This is a work in progress. The goal of this project is to move it into a Theme.apk for the new "Theme Chooser"
Credits:
tnpapadakos (buy him a cappucino)
This is his hard work, and it's very good looking, I'm just trying to help minimize the zip size and get it moved to an apk for Tmobiles Theme Chooser
this is a good start in the right direction, dueces
Awesome, thanks!
*sigh* - DON'T
Seriously, guys... The themeing engine was added to CM7 precisely to avoid this kind of messing up with the ROM, so *don't* do this. Themes can now be built and distributed as APKs, you can even market the damned things...
This comes from an installable APK, for example:
xttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/10355648/mau5-land.png
Check the vendor/tmobile/themes/Cyanbread and Androidian stuff for examples.
Awesome I love it thanks
So this is a .apk or theme? Could you explain a bit more why you say this is a bad idea?

Had some issues, working now on #15. I edited the link in post #1 for the working full colorized build #14
I dig this, but am not keen on flashing something on top of nightlies that could jack with the ROM that's already a WIP.
Once you convert to a theme I'll definitely give it a whirl (not much liking the current 3 themes, but love the functionality & options it will bring).

It's a theme, installed as an APK. Messing up with ROMs to change layout has always been a problem, it's _very_ easy to mess up something, especially when those changes are done by simply repacking the resources (unzip, replace, re-zip). It's a fairly frequent source of support problems for developers, and it's just an ugly way of themeing a phone.
CM7 includes a themeing engine developed by T-Mobile, and the main reason for it is to prevent these problems (and it is _very_ powerful, allows you to change almost anything from layout to animations, not just graphics). If you're running a recent build of CM7 (or any of the many CM kangs) , open the "Theme Chooser" application and choose one of the 2 samples: they are a very small example of what can be done. Note that even the window transitions are changed. Then search the market for "greybeard", and have fun installing your first market theme

well, no, its not a theme yet
its actually a kanged version of cm7
THE ONLY THINGS THAT ARE CHANGED ARE:
images in framework, SystemUI, Settings, Bluetooth, Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Contacts, Deskclock, Email, FM, MMS, Music and Phone
no layouts or xml files are changed, only images
the images changed have the exact same names, they have only been colorized so that the menu icons and notification bar icons that were grey/black and white before are now colored...some others that were colored before (like battery for instance) were changed to blue or some other design that i preferred (i personally cant stand the signal bars/wifi indicators in gingerbread)
this was originally just something i was doing for myself for a few months starting in july, 2010, but after i finally shared it in october over at cmforum, it took off as people liked it
there is nothing else changed in the ROM itself, so flashing this overtop of your current version of cm7.*** doesnt "break" anything else
so really its as simple as having both versions available on sdcard and flashing one or the other
honestly, its much to do about nothing, its just a different look
if someone can tell me how to "theme" the framework, and all those apk's listed above without doing it this way, i'd be glad to do it, it would save me alot of work, but i like doing it anyway

Hey all,
I am Rasa, and I am a "noob", lol
I own a Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0.
I have searched for a good 15 minutes and couldnt find a similar problem or answer.
I've only owned an android device for a few weeks now,
But am a fluent Linux user, and don't really have any problems navigating or finding/changing things.
However,
I just updated my "GO Launcher" yesterday,
and now the "menu" (where preferences/edit/go store/ etc) are,
Won't change when I switch themes.
Before the update, When I would switch themes,
The menu would also change to match the theme.
But after the update..
The menu stays white (with green highlights) , no matter what theme I change to.
Ive tried restarting it, exiting it, and everything else I could think of..
But it doesn't change anything.
I don't currently have a screenshot tool on my device,
But I could manage to get a photo or two if required.
Has anyone else experienced this?
and if so.. Do you know how I can fix this so that the menu changes along with the chosen theme?
Thanks for any help, Much appreciated.
Great job on the forum and the dev. work!
Merry Xmas!
Rasa
I apologize if this is in the wrong spot.
Please forgive my noob arse, if so.
Do you mean the launcher buttons at the bottom of the screen?
The style of those buttons may stick around after you change theme. You can long press those buttons and replace them with theme icons if you wish.
Hi and thanks for the reply.
those aren't quite what I'm talking about,
I can change those no problem,
but...
When I hit the actual "menu button"
(the bottom-left "button") seen here..

a menu comes up,
like this..
[snagged from google images]
and that menu usually changes along with the chosen theme.
But it no longer does so after the update.
This is what I'm stuck on. lol
Not sure how to fix it.
(could I revert the update back to previous version?)
Everything else changes with the theme like it should, except this menu.
Personally I don't really care what that menu looks like, it's not open that often (unless you're saying it's actually "stuck" there and won't close). You might look at menu/pref/visual settings/icons/ "menu icon" to see if there's something there to change.
Hi tcat and thanks for the reply.
Nah, it's not stuck open,
and while I agree that it's not really open enough to matter much,
It still bugs me. lol
I don't much like white on my OS's, not white menus, bg's, windows, or much of anything else to be white. And this is white! lol
On a good note, I am now screenshot-able!
I've looked through all settings and there is just nothing to change this.
No matter what theme I switch to, this menu stays as it is.
But it changed fine before i updated GO Launcher.
Meh!

Hi,
I see what you mean. It might be a bug that they introduced with the update.
Did you by any chance backup your apps with maybe Titanium Backup?
If not, maybe try contacting the developer.
[email protected] (I think).
Or, their website:
http://golauncher.goforandroid.com/
has links for the previous APKs, which you could download and try to re-install.
Jim
P.S. I didn't have any earlier versions, but just installed the latest a couple of days ago, and I see the same behavior you're seeing.

Hi Jim! Thanks for the reply, and especially for the confirmation that it's not just me! lol
I didnt back up anything before I did that update,
Only afterwards. doh!
and this thing isnt rooted yet, So i only have a "generic" backup tool from the market. No Titanium, yet.
I hope it's just a bug and not actually a new" feature" or something.
I may just contact them , good call.
Thanks again man.
I appreciate it.
edit: emai sent.
we'll see.
I'm having the same issue, even now. I'm searching desperately for a fix. I've found that very very very few themes will also theme the menu. You can see which ones will work by going to 'MENU' - 'Preferences' - 'Visual Settings' - 'Icons' - 'Menu Icon', and a list will pop up of available themes for the menu. The problem is that many many more of the themes I have installed SHOULD work for the menu. They used to, anyway. It's obviously an update problem. Did you ever find a fix?

Hey, I never found a "fix"..
But I learned the same as you, That you can see what menu themes are available,
and I also learned (pretty sure anyway), That it is due to GO Launcher being updated without certain themes also being updated by the creator.
So, If the creator of the theme does not update their themes along with the GO launcher updates..
The menu defaults to that white background with green icons/menu items.
All of the newer themes Im using, or the themes i have had updates for since GO Launcher updated, seem to have their own themed menus,
But the themes that have not been updated after Go launcher was,
All seem to get stuck with the fugly-ish white menu.
So me thinks it's just a matter of certain themes creators not staying "on the ball". lol
Pretty sure of it.
I think the only 'fix' for it is for the theme makers to get off their butts and update their themes. lol
Sorry for the 2x reply, but I found the fix. Well, sort of. Go to the GoLauncher site like he said, and install Version 2.68, because 2.69 is where they made the update to the menu that stopped most themes from working. The downside: Any themes that HAVE been updated to work with the new menu from 2.69 on, will NOT work with 2.68. The other option is to email the devs of your favorite themes and beg them to update.

We must have posted at almost the same time lol. I didn't see this until I posted again and basically told you the same thing. Craziness. But thanks for the heads up. At least your question got me on the right path to finding an answer.
I was going to wait until I was completely finished to release this but it seems a red theme is in high demand and with ICS leaks starting I didn't know how long until it would be outdated.
This is my first released theme for android so go easy on me. Another reason I'm posting this is to get some feedback from the community as to what they are looking for in a theme. I realize there are some things that could use polishing so let me know what you think. I'm open to feedback so long as it's constructive!

Flashlight
BootAnimation
ICS window animations
Roboto Font
Animated Notifications - (Turn off by setting notifications to transparent in mik settings )

Rosie and a lot of other HTC things are not able to be themed at the moment. (to my knowledge anyways)
Bugs:
I have not come across any major flaws or bugs. But then again I don't use everything on the phone so please post with as much detail as possible of the location of bad icons and text strings if you find any.
To Do List:
Version v1.0 will more than likely be the final update.
As for porting this to ICS.... I"m going to wait until there is a official ICS release or as close to official as the devs can get
plus I need a little break this theme has consumed a lot of my time lately!!!!!
Download in 2nd post
I do have 2 small requests for anyone reading this or downloading this theme.
1) If you want to use or port this theme as your own ask me first. I spent a lot of time editing these images and want to know where it's going and that proper credit is given.
2) I recently realized the lack of real feedback in the android community. I see tons of mods and themes with over 1,000's of downloads and only 10 people where able to take the second to hit the thanks button. Also multiple apps on the market with millions of downloads and only 10,000 comments that's a pretty low percentage!! I hate to sound demanding but come on people!!!! It only takes seconds to do this and it's gives us themers, modders, and hackers something to go off of and keep doing what we do.
Lastly I wanted to give thanks to all the members of the various Android forums that wrote guides for people like me to learn stuff like this. With out the community I would not be able to do the things I'm learning to do. And also a quick thanks to UOT kitchen for the battery icons and the animated background. I hate making those crazy xmls lol.

I haven't looked at the ICS framework so I hope they didn't mocve too much around or it may take some figuring out. More than likely I'll port theme to an isc build.

Warning. Possible n00b question ahead (first smartphone so first time geeking out over my phone)...
Do you need root for this? I just grabbed a skin but it was an app I downloaded from the market. I've installed apps using adb before but based on the instructions it sounds like root is required.
I will be rooting but am studying up on Android OS and flashing ROMs/kernels before I do.
Also, once this is flashed, is it added to the skin/theme options on the phone so that it can be selected and deselected (blasphemy I know)? And is it all or nothing or can certain elements be changed, such as wallpaper or something like that.

Wait, you're a noob? You seem so seasoned in all your posts!
To answer your questions... yes you need to be rooted to flash this. This will not be a skin as it is a theme that you have to flash from recovery. It will not be added anywhere like the HTC skins. This will simply be applied to your phone. That means that you can continue to use that skin if you want to in order to add a little more to it. I'll be running this in a second and using one of the skins that was just released recently. And most of this should be all or nothing, in a sense. You will still be able to change things just like you could with the stock theme. Meaning that you will be able to change the wallpaper and stuff.
EDIT: You also need to realize that this is a theme for Ineffabilis. That means that you need to be running that ROM to use this theme. If you try to flash this theme on top of a different ROM or the stock ROM, you could have serious issues. Still can't get over that you're a noob haha
EDIT 2: You also don't need to use adb for this. You can just download it, put it on your sd card, boot into recovery, wipe your cache and dalvik, then select flash zip menu. You can then select it off your sd card. Much easier than doing it through adb, imo.
EDIT 3: Seriously, you're a noob????? Like, I hope you don't take this as an insult, but I just can't get over it. I consider you one of the select few who know what you're doing! I'm impressed

Yup, total n00b. Except that I've been reading almost every post in the Rezound forums studying up on what I need to know about the phone and rooting/flashing etc. I have to get my geek fix here cuz my girlfriends just wanna talk about pregnancy, adoption, etc...
Yeah, I plan on flashing Ineffabilis ROM and I think dsb kernel, or maybe Ziggy's.
Thanks for the help and the compliment!

Haha, no problem. I am thoroughly impressed. If only more would read everything before posting I would definitely recommend Ineffabilis, though it will be dead soon. It is the best ROM right now, imo, but there will be better to come with the ICS leak out. I would suggest using that ROM for now, though. I like Ziggy's kernel, too, but others have had their issues with it. I've been running it since I rooted and haven't had an issue yet. (Well, it does bootloop when I'm charging it and it hits a full charge). But it's pretty stable for me. I'm flashing this theme right now, but I'll be using the Red Beats Skin on top of it.
Edit: This is to the OP... I didn't want to flash this because I thought it kind of looked meh in the pictures. Just flashed it and holy crap it's gorgeous! Big props and hope you keep adding themes for all the ICS ROMs.
Thanks wasabi! I'll try and to add some better screenshots tomorrow.

Yeah, the only thing I was still unsure of after flashing it was the font. I read too much on my phone and it was starting to bother me. I just installed the Roboto font, though, and I love it again You should make other colors like blue and green You know, if you have time haha
Thanks to our devs @Bin4ry and @Kali-.. We will soon be getting official Cm10.1 support for our device ..

How would you know, i don't remember sharing any rom yet.
Work good except:
- Bluetooth
- Sensors
- Camera
Other stuff is running well!
I look forward to this but mostly because of the PAC ROM, which is my planned future for the Ultra.
I guess that CM10.2 isn't far away when 10.1 is up and running. It feels like this month is when the big things happen for our Ultras.
Anyway, that is a good news

It used to be custom roms added functionality and speed or filled in when manufacturers lagged in updating Android. Now they do virtually nothing. Neither functionality or speed is an issue any longer and updating Android doesn't seem necessary. I tried just about all the custom roms including CyanogenMod when I had Note 2 and if anything it limited functionality, did nothing for speed and was one small step ahead of the manufacturer in updating Android. I find various launchers such as Nova, Apex, Smart and Action add the functionality we use to only get with custom roms. With the latest processors speed is absolutely not an issue. Updates to Android have been minimal since Ice Cream was released. What's the point? What do we gain with a Cyanogen or custom rom?

I would have to agree. I find that as long as my phone is rooted and I remove unnecessary apps it performs just as good or better than custom ROMS. Throw in a cool Launcher and I am happy. The irony is that I still end up installing custom ROMS. Go figure.

For a start if gives people options to explore something new. A lot of people prefer vanilla Android too (Especially when given the option of Touchwiz vs CM/PA/ETC). Once you're on a custom ROM you can then mess & play with other stuff too such as ribbons, boot animations, statusbar mods, transparency controls, colour profiles, different sound enhancements, hybrid/tablet layouts etc etc. Android was designed as an open platform & manufacturers of hardware decided to try & lock us out of all those options & force their own UIs on us.
I'm not trying to start an argument here but if you don't like having any control over your devices then I hear a company called Apple make a phone you might like...
Just give me tablet mode and i'll be contented... lol

well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but, I think several MILLION Adndroid users, who are members of XDA don't agree with you..
i used to want to load CWM, CM mod etc etc etc when I had devices like HTC G2... but nowadays who needs this crap work when most users strip the stock rom and remove bloatware. Snapdragon800 IS FAST NOW.
Well, for one thing, I'm gonna need tablet mode on this beast when I'm finally able to order it. That's a big point in favor of custom ROMs, in my opinion. I also prefer to use pie controls. In addition, it just kind of offends me on principle to see these OEM ROMs that are 300, 350, or even 400+ MB in size. I'd much prefer a fully-featured ROM that still manages to trim out all the fat and run fast, like Carbon or PA, or of course, CM. Which reminds me: I just kind of prefer AOSP.

How would that even work?? Anyone ever put thought into that... Like how would it override the google's new animations/transitions?? Do you think this is where Samsung/touchwiz throws in the towel with updates and just goes straight to Tizen?? I mean that is what they did with their galaxy gear2 went straight to tizen...?
What do you guys think??

I was wondering about this too. The theming for Google apps seem to be pretty much self contained now, and touchwiz for the most part wouldn't be needed... even the new dialer looked beautiful ... as much as I love the colors of the S5, I kinda like Android's theming better...
I hope we can get a clean port over that's fast and smooth... or maybe Samsung could release the system dump that had the drivers without Touchwiz ... I know I know but a man can dream
What are you guys trying to get at? Samsung gets the android source code directly from Google. They can change anything and everything they wish. All the way down to lib files and .so binaries. TouchWiz is simply a launcher.
I wish it was just a launcher. Then settings/dialer/messaging /contacts wouldn't look like that... So unfortunately it's not just a launcher.... ?

Yes. TouchWiz is just a launcher. The stuff you are seeing in those apps is not TouchWiz related. It is the Samsung THEME you are seeing. And they as stated before, they can do whatever they want with it. So long as Android in general remains open source.
Yeah but the skins are going to cover All animations and transitions... Touch wiz is a skin over android..

Yeah. Just like when Samsung updated GB to ICS, there was hardly any difference. When you have a skin like TW on top of android, that's what you get. Even LG's UI. The multitasking UI doesn't look remotely similar to stock 4.4.

I disagree but okay. TouchWiz might be interpreted to people as a theme. But its mainly a launcher. You can delete the TouchWiz launcher and still have a fully functional phone. LG Modifies their settings apks and other apks with their own theme. So i consider TouchWiz to be a launcher and the rest of it to be a Samsung Theme. But to each their own i guess.
Besides, this thread was going nowhere so i was trying to figure out what the point of this thread was.

Okay i guess that was too broad a statement saying it was just a launcher. But to me, it mainly is a launcher. The rest is just a theme/skin put on by Samsung the same that LG does. I seriously didn't understand what the OP was getting at with "Android L and TouchWiz" they will simply coexist. Samsung will apply their themes and animations over top of the default ones because that is their trademark.

How did you not understand? He was wondering if, for example, the new lockscreen notifications and notification shade would make it's way to our phone, or material design. Or if Samsung would make their own version of L and do it their way. Simple question, not so simple answer.

The same thing that will happen at the release of every new version of android. Google will show a beautiful simplified and sleek version of android and then Samsung will ship it with their skin over it effectively making any improvements Google made negligible.

Ok guys to put all your worries to rest. Samsung will almost certainly not give up on android. Their going to most likely strip android to the basics again and theme everything from the ground up. Just like last time, the time before that, the time before that, etc. Whenever a major upgrade came out they just went with it. All android l is a 3rd coordinate in the os for depth, new re-aamped animations and a new api level. It's nothing for the tons and tons of devs and designers at samsung to take on. Give it time and they will probably release their version of android l. And no, touchwiz is not just a launcher, it's a launcher, a whole new framework jar, and a whole new system ui. Also take into account what they've done to the settings. Tabs, a grid, more options all of it. It's not that easy to build everything from the ground up but it will be done.
You do realize that Samsung put things in their Touchwiz skin that was later adopted by stock android, right?
E.g. brightness slider in notification shade, quick toggles in notification shade, messaging popups, etc.
I'm sure multi window is on its way to stock android as well.
