Thinking of getting a 16GB tab s - Sony Tablet S

Thoughts? Advice?
Thanks

If you like gaming I'd definitely say this is the best tablet out. For the rest of the tasks it gets the job done too. It's tough too - I've dropped mine from waist height twice without any damage - not to say you should give it a try... There isn't a tablet out there that I'd rather have, and that's saying a lot cause usually these things become outdated within months or even weeks of release!

Fellow arc owner here, and and I say go for it. Very happy with my 16gb S but do note that only about half that storage is available to you. Not a problem if you plan on using a decent size sd card though.

Hi,
I got a 32Gb a week after it was released in the UK. Am very pleased with it so far. I suppose it's just a case of knowing that you aren't going to be able to do anything all that different with it, other than the things you can already do with a laptop. It's for emails / surfing / social networking and the bits and bobs you can already do with an Android phone.
The overall size is very good and the screen is crystal clear. The speakers are disappointing. I found installing ASWLauncher EX was a big bonus - speeds up the UI and gives you room for more apps in a dock along the bottom of your 5 screens.
I've put a 32Gb full size SD card in the slot, and am using MX Video Player app to play movies from it, and PowerAmp to play mp3s from it.
I'd highly recommend getting the dock, as it means less use of the power cable, which feels a bit flimsy and gives you the impression that it could easily be broken. It also turns the tab into a nice picture-frame!
For transferring files to and from the tablet, I'd recommend FTPServer on the tablet (https://market.android.com/details?id=lutey.FTPServer&hl=en), and Filezilla on a pc/laptop. This removes the need to constantly put a cable in the side of the device, as the transfers are done wirelessly.
I haven't scratched the screen in all the time I've had it, and don't think it would scratch without some serious force.
... Just some of my views! Hope that helps.

Happy to be of help! Was really pleased when this worked - use it on my galaxy s too.

Can't say much more that hasn't already been said here, but this.
I love this machine, been downloading free ps-games from ps store, I've been downloading free movies from video unlimited. I have bought an SDXC 128GB card and formated it in FAT32 and put it into the machine. Works wonderful.
If the ps store force closes? clear cache and data and it would work again.
Got the usb-adapter cable today. it works fine with normal usb-memories. Have not tried it with my ps3-controller yet, since I'm not home.
Have not tried 720p/1080p movies on it yet, but I see no point in why. since the screen is "only" 1280*800. xvid/divx works beautiful and takes up little space.
Ok so the gfx isn't perfect on them ps-games, but what did you expect from games that old. Besides, I play games because they are enjoyable, not because they look good
just my two cents

don't forget emulation works perfectly too (not just the PSN store games, which BTW are emulated anyway). So you have almost the entire PSX/SNES/megadrive/neogeo/N64 library potentially available, together with wireless controllers working out of the box.
FWIW, for video decoding, I've found using apple tv presets works perfectly, and preserves 720p

Is worlds scariest police chases on emulator?

100% agreed, I love mine.

I got five free rentals from Sony when I bought the tablet, that I could download from inside "Video Unlimited" app.

I recommend that you get the 32gb version. You might be disappointed at the meagre amount of free storage on the 16gb. Plus, you cant use the SD slot to expand memory, it only transfers files

This statement has potential to be debatable, but at the moment pretty much no decent games show on the android market.

A 16GB SD card is waaaaay cheaper than the $100 more they charge for the 32GB model...

Agree, SD-card is cheaper. I got the 16Gb and got the cradle, extra AC and LCD-protection instead of 32GB version, then I bought the 128GB SDXC and formated it in FAT32 and put it into the tablet

I registered my tablet at sony.com, I got "vouchers" on email that I could use on https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/login.action then I loged on to "video unlimited" and found the free movies in there.
The movies comes in .MNV said to be played on PS3 and PSP only. But MX Video Player can play them.

[Q] Do you find 16GB enough?

Since Samsung is only releasing a 16GB version of the tablet here in Canada, there's no option for 32gb unless ordering from the US. After base o/s install, there is roughly 12GB free. Has anyone bought the 16GB and found it to too limiting? 12GB is probably plenty of room for quite a few app installs, but adding videos would kill it real quick. The omission of an sd card slot is really disappointing, but it is what it is. Buying an android tablet unfortunately seems to be more about making compromise than anything.
Rob
So far 16GB's seems to be more than enough for me. It really depends on how you set your self up. Here's a couple of things I've done to help give me a bit more usable room on my Tab.
1. Use online storage like Dropbox and Box.net and their android apps. With Dropbox you can get 2GB's free and if you get other people to sign up from a link you email them you can get more free storage. I got most of my family and a few friends to sign up this way, I'm up to 5GB's of free online storage with Dropbox alone. Box.net you can get another 5GB's of free online storage for free just for signing up. I use both of these to store all of my wallpapers, icons pictures and such. Saves a ton of room and makes everything available to me no matter where I am. You can use these sites from your Tab or your phone by using their apps or any laptop or desktop by going to their sites.
2. If you plan on using your Tab for work things like word docks, spreadsheets and PDF's... Use Google Docs, I've been using Google Docs for the last few years now and haven't even come close to using up the space they give you for free. I'm a chef and use it to keep all of my recipes, cost control documents... Again for the same reasons I stated above. I've also started using EverNote over the last year and now that I have my Tab I find myself using it even more. Being a chef I'm very much into keeping a running record of the food and dishes I make. With EverNote I can snap a picture with my eVo of a special or new dish and make a few key quick notes, then on the train ride home at the end of the day I can edit that note on my Tab to make it more detailed.
3. For your music you can use any number of online music storage sites. I use Googles Music Beta, again for the reasons i've stated before. I can get to everything in my collection from anywhere, on my phone, my Tab and any computer anywhere.
Those 3 things alone save a ton of space on my Tab as well as my eVo and make it very easy for me to access all of my stuff from anywhere.
It should leave you with more than enough space on your Tab for any number of apps. As for movies, just make sure that they are formated right. And how many times can you watch the same movie over again, once you've watched vid or movie just either delete it or one it to your computer.
I have over 50 apps installed on my Tab, all of the StarWars movies, and I mean all of them 1 through 6 and some other movie with Mat Damon in it. And I still have over 7GB's free memory.
Live in the cloud brother... Make thing a bit easier.

16GBs isn't enough for me. Typically most one hour 720P HD video clips will take up anywhere from 1.5 to 1.9GBs and that leaves me little room for music. Despite using spotify, dropbox, pandora, and netflix i still can't keep enough media to last me for a trip longer than 5 hours
A quick question to you guys: are the 32/64 bit versions not available anywhere in Europe? For me 16GB is definitely not enough. I am struggling with 32GB on my current Galaxy Tab 7"....

um ok. I guess you've never been on a long road trip or train ride. There is only so many times you can watch the same movie/video over again.
16GB is definitely enough for what most people use tablet for. But it's true that there are times where i do store HD movies in the tab and i wish i could store more HOWEVER it's definitely not enough to justify getting 32gb for $100 more
This has been discussed to some extend here: Is 16GB enough?
For me it's more than enough. With all the cloud space everywhere I don't need more. I have with me the stuff I really need/want and everything else is available only via an internet connection.
That might not be an option for someone else. That person needs to wait for/get a 32/64 GB model. I'm perfectly happy with the 16 GB.

That's what the USB adapter and two USB thumb drives are for.
64GB extra instead of 16GB extra for $100 extra.
with apps like google music and netflix i have yet to run out of space on my 16gb.
I bought the 16GB version today. I almost mail ordered a 32gb from the US, but then I thought if I have hardware issues I might be out of luck. I plan to get the USB adapter which I can only find on ebay right now.

Nexus 7 (Google Tablet) Announced - No micro sd slot - Google TV also released

https://www.google.com/nexus/#/7
lack of micro sd really sucks since paying $50 for 8GB of extra space could get me a 64GB microsd...
I agree - plus a regular SD-slot would make it really useful for photographers and general data upload to the cloud. Oh well, I ponied up for the 16GB version anyway (actually two of them).

I'd party that extra 50 just to make it easier to load up apps and to have the extra storage for the so many things Android that still won't work properly with a SDHC card. Then still spend that $50 for a 64 GB SDXC card. But without it I doubt I'd buy either version of the tablet.

Google must have decided that cloud storage and streaming is the future or......., they are encouraging people to root there phones and use Wifi Tether:laugh:
8 & 16 would be great if it = exactly the amount of user accessable space available.
In reality we have 5.8xGB & 12.8xGB est storage.
This really hurts the gaming & app installs big-time. Music & Photos should be ok from the Cloud.
Wow....literally just was about to hit "Complete your purchase" when I actually started to do more research on it....
$230 (after tax S&H...) for an 8GB tablet w/ no MicroSDHC or MicroSDXC?? Definitely going to have to sleep on this one first.
But, my god, that thing is made by Asus, Nvidia Quad-Core, 4.1 Android Jelly Bean!
$230 is not bad....Somebody convince me to buy it!!
EDIT: But where oh where will I put my many episodes of Star Trek? MacGyver? Stargate SG-1? I can't access that content when I have no internet available at work....

Just think, $230 total is just $20 shy of the 16GB at $250 but that in reality + shipping could be $280.

amazon with their private marketplace and semi-forked os is damaging google sales.
this tablet its intended as a replacement for the kindle fire - if you were intrested in buying a kindle fire this is better in any possible way and cost the same.
if you wanted to buy a more generic tablet, this is expressly built so the other units remain actractive even if they cost more as google dont want to cannibalize its partners sales.
basically its a "**** you, amazon" gift from google.

Hear hear , I say, class 10 32gb Samsung micro sdhc is safe if I drop my phone in a toilet, if It gets to close to a high power magnet, its er....... I can't remember but the packaging made it out to be pretty much indestructible, and memory cards break on me all the time, all types and prices , and I gotta say its been awesome never a problem, so no micro sd, is a real let down, and I think I'm gonna swing towards the s3 and keep the EVO, as the missus is happy with her iPhone

When will these manufactures learn that expandable memory is a must? We don't always have access to WiFi to use the cloud. This greatly limits when and where we can use their products. Why do they seem hell bent on pushing the cloud on us. Yes its nice to have online storage but when your not near WiFi it makes it useless.

I don't understand. I have a 32GB MicroSD in the tablet (not speaking of dock) now and it has no adapter. Am I missing something?
Yes it will work right in the tablet. I have one in mine as I type this. The real nice thing is it doesn't even need formatted to fat32 like I had to do with the one I put in my HTC Rezound. The TF300 reads the exfat format.
I have one and it works fine. When you use the adapter you will be asked to scan for errors every time you plug it into your PC. Go with the default settings for faster use...
Be careful when putting it in different tablets because you may lose all your data...
Aww sorry, my mistake, totally forgot that there is also slot in the tablet itself (long usage of TF300T with the dock is messing up with my brain xD).
It WORKS!!! 100%
I'm using it since august, and no problem.

Oh, To answer the WHY's as far as needing 64GB card:
-Movies
-Music
-Ect...
APPS, Cache (spotify, rdio, google music) movies rented, bought, downloaded (1080p), ROMS, and all those lovely gameloft apps that take up a gig or two definitely eat into the tablet memory.
Even though my external storage is 32 GB I have easily gone over that and gotten that stupid warning. I love my samsung 32gb class 10 micro sd but a 64GB would be a god send and I could use the other for my phone.
Thanks for posting this. I'm going to order one. Love the android packaging too and app that's included.

Mine work fine out of the box. Maximum size is 59.45GB. To test it I fill it up with movies and play back all of them. All works correctly.
I use it for movies and App Bakup, could move some games to it (using App2SD) and later one (after warrenty out) store a copy of Nandroid backup (CWM or TRWP). Last time to use the Face Unlock feature (replacing PIN) I have to do Factory Reset. It wipe out everything on the internal SD. I did use App Backup to restore from microSD (external) and it works fine. I heard that TF700 cannot read it (exFat), must format it to NTFS, but TF300T (mine stock JB 4.1 not root, not unlock) can read/write it no problem.:victory:
yup, works perfectly
So the tablet could have 2 64GB SD cards using the tablet and the dock?
I only have a 32GB but with all my movies and music could really use as much space as possible. my pictures take up a gig alone. Plus I take videos with the tablet.

Poll: 16GB, 32GB, or wait for something better later?

I'm tempted to buy the 16GB...but really prefering the one with cellular on it.
I think I maybe doing a lot of recording. Some told me not to get the 16GB since there is no ext SD on this so I must get 32GB. I don't know a $100 more for 16GB?
I wonder if we can get by the lack of space issue just by using Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft Skydrive on the 16GB?
Which version are you going to get?
16GB, 32GB, wait for something more later?
PS:
Are apps on tablet much bigger size than phone version? Or they are the same exact size?
What are some of you guys reasons for needing the 32GB?
16GB. I used to have a 8GB Nexus 7, which worked fine up until Google's mass 5-day sale a little while back. I only have enough money currently for a 16GB Nexus 10, and I think 16GB should do fine. Chances are I'll end up wiping the tablet before I even use the full storage anyway

Nexus 7 only has 1.9MB camera...so that maybe why you don't fill it much? I think once we have Front and Back camera recording at 1080p, I'm worry 16GB may fill up fast for me
I ordered the 16GB... the 32 isn't worth the extra $100 considering I can use my portable 1TB hard drive ($79) and an OTG cable ($3) and get a better deal. Is 4G really necessary? Most of use already have 4G phones and chances are that since you're on these forums you're rooted and have the ability to tether for free.

You don't need external power to use it... It's like a bigger thumb drive which at 2.5" isn't very big at all.

Whenever I tether via CM10 Android AP, it drained phone battery fast. By the time I get to the final destination, phone already low on batt and can barely use phone for anything else. So I was thinking had I have a tablet that has cellular, I can just swap in the sim to the tablet to handle gps navigation while on trip and when I get near the place, i just put the sim back in to the phone so I can use it right away without low battery issue.

I ordered the 16GB... the 32 isn't worth the extra $100 considering I can use my portable 1TB hard drive ($79) and an OTG cable ($3) and get a better deal. Is 4G really necessary? Yea, it seems $100 more is waste for me also.
Thanks for mentioning of OTG cable. Based on your response and googling, OTG is some cable (like this http://www.amazon.com/T-Flash-Adapt...=1353034131&sr=1-2&keywords=microusb+otg)that I can hook up between the tablet and external drive to expand the tablet's drive capacity right?

I may be wrong, but i believe the only time your maps would need an internet connection is when you're first creating the route and if you need to reroute. So you could just tether until you have your route made on your tablet and then turn it off. Maps should preload everything needed. Couldn't you just plug in the phone?

Yea, I guess I can do that...it might be a little inconvenience stopping the car and turn it on tethering so I can get my navigation to handle detour.
Thanks for the tip. I think I will ordered the 16GB as your solution would work for my concern on diskspace and battery draining.
I'm going to enable Google Maps Offline feature on there and download all the maps it allowed me. I'll put Sygic on there as backup to handle situation where Google maps is not available in Yellowstone Park deadspot area.

Not sure why you'd need live GPS in Yellowstone, it's really hard to get lost there on pavement.
16$ more is not worth 100$ at all. I can live with 16Gb and the dongly USB OTG...
Dang 16GB already sold out. I should have grab it this morning.
Update: Stock is available again...so just got it a few min ago

What's worse is that it's actually more than $100 if you consider higher tax.

That was just one of the location where I"m going...but along the way, I'll be going across several places where they might have bad traffic and possible detour where I need the live traffic and to showoff the iPad person in the car.
Ordered Both

I ordered a 16GB from Google Store yesterday although I wanted a 32GB. I found the pre order sale at Staples and ordered a 32GB from them this morning. I know it won't arrive until Christmas. I was thinking of returning the 16GB within its return period but Google will refund only to Google Wallet account and I don't know if I can ever use the balance in Google wallet. I guess I screwed myself. Anyone in my situation???
I would rather have the built-in memory. I got the 32GB model ... I wish they offered a 64GB.
I look at it like this , loading your drive to the hilt is murder on ya memory. 16gig seems good to me !!!

My 16 GB came in yesterday, yea 32 would've been nice but for $100 I don't need it. My S3 has all the music I need on it and I've got no problems moving videos back and forth if I need em.
$100 at this point really is steep for me, for something I really have no need of..16gb is already a luxury for me. I do prefer the 32gb that's for sure but I don't think I can justify it. I may just wait till the price drops. I am not even sure if ill like the bigger model. I love the 7 because of its size. Its perfect.

Yea, I prefer 32GB too until someone suggested the OTG cable as mitigation to me plus I'm not sure I need the full size either. I can't wait for another 4 months to see some new stuff at CES 2013 and this poll shows there are many 16GB users so I don't feel so bad and join the bandwagon to buy the 16GB. Even though the 32GB was sold out first, but this poll shows there are more 16GB users...so maybe Google had fewer 32GB in inventories than 16GB to start with. The 32GB ppl will probably have to wait a little longer?

[Q] 16GB or 32GB?

Hey all,
Just a quick one, currently waiting for a eternally out of stock 32GB Nexus 10 in the UK, does anyone think the extra 16GB is worth the difference in price? I currently have an old laptop that stores all my media so there's no way i'd fit it all on the Nexus anyway. What do you guys think?
Cheers!

16GB was fine for me, IMO not worth the extra money for 16 more GB, you can always get a otg adapter if you run out of space

+1 i got an otg +2x 32 gb mini pendrive for 42€.
Do you find the OTG a bit awkward sticking out of the side of the tablet? I cant imagine what i'd fill the space with until i start using it.
I want to experiment with Ubuntu-touch and be able to at least emulate a dual-boot between the two OSes so I am holding out for a 32GB model. That is if they evey become available in Canada again.
I have the 32GB model, but I haven't come close to using even 16GB. With that said, it's comforting to know I have the space available should I want/need it. If you can afford the extra cost, and can wait out the availability of the device, I'd go with the 32GB.
I'm hoping to get at least 2 or 3 years of good use out of my N10, so I went with the 32GB. I'm already down to only 2-3 GB free on my 16GB Galaxy Nexus, so I could certainly see space being an issue down the road if I went with the 16GB tablet.
I have 32gb model and have just 9gb left, mostly games. I have all my movies and music on USB drives that I use with the otg cable.

it really just depends on how you use it. i have 100gb on dropbox plus a server and laptop so I went with a 16gb because an extra 100 bucks for 16gb of storage seems insane. i'll just save that extra 100 and put it on my next upgrade.
Ok, thanks all for your replies, as much as i am very keen to get hold of a Nexus 10 the wait for a 32GB one should be worth it.

Voted 32gb, because of the safety net of the space. Even the 16gb is probably more than enough, unless you store most your files on the device. I use plex so all movies/videos are on desktop and just stream. Besides apps, the only thing on mine is games for emulators. I bairly touched 5 gb if that of my 32gb
I thought the 16GB would be fine since I only use 7 or 8GB on my phone. But I use the tablet for gaming more more than the phone, and games have gotten quite large. Many are 1GB+ in size now, and the 16GB just doesnt cut it for me. I wish I had gone with the 32GB when I bought this. At least you can add space with an OTG cable, but it isnt as elegant as if the space was there in the first place.
16gb
I have 16 gb because I use Google services for things like music so I don't have to store it on my device, I only sync the playlist that I listen too off of google play music. Saves about 5gb of music files. 16gb+ not worth $100 imho.
I have a 32, and I'm frequently over 16 with media.

I just got my 32GB today and it already doesn't have much space once I put a couple movies, games, and music albums on it.
I would vote for 32GB. I am regretting getting the 16GB version. The OTG use is fine for movies, magazine etc. But you can't store games on SD cards or thumb drives. You can't compare 100$ for additional 16GB that's on board a device Vs something that hangs from the side of your N10. Never. Go for the 32GB anyday.
I have 7gb left on my 32gb one, but most of what I have on there is luxury I don't really need to keep.
I ordered a Patriot Node last week, that might be a solution to the eternal storage problems plaguing the Nexus devices the Wi-Fi on it is pretty weak, but it's good enough to listen to music or watch non-HD videos/read documents/stuff (worst case scenario, there's a usb cable).
On my gtab 8.9 with 16 gb I can't take nandroid backups due to lack of space so I would definitely recommend 32gb

I agree. I have 32gb and am very glad. I like to keep a stock nandroid and a nandroid of the prior version of whatever custom ROM I'm using so I can fall back if needed. That could already account for a few GB. I also back up apps with Titanium backup...another few hundred MB. If you use Drop box or other cloud services, you will have a local on-device copy as well. It's all too easy to use up the space, and very nice to have it available.
... beamed from my Nexus 10 to your planet
I've had both. First the 16gb which I purchased from the only place I could find it locally in SA. That fell and the screen was shattered. Managed to get the 32 gb from Amazon via MyUS.
My 32gb is definitely better than my 16gb. For some reason my 16gb could not detect my external 1TB Seagate drive via the OTG cable. My 32gb picks it up seamlessly. I don't know why; just happy that it does
I also use my tablet to grab stuff off newsgroups. The extra space is well worth the money.
